That sounds really exciting - ____________________?
It begins at 2 o’clock on Saturday afternoon. I’m really
looking forward to it.
Great!
But best of all my favourite pop singer Joan Jett is going
to be there.
_______________________________________ play?
She plays the guitar. She’s also a great singer and gives a
really good stage performance. You’ve got to see her
sometime.
61
Part One (continued)
62
__________________________________ in a hotel?
No. We’ll be staying in a tent because it’s much cheaper.
_________________________________________ ?
It finishes on Sunday evening at about 9 o’clock. The
festival will end with a big fireworks display.
My weekend is not going to be as exciting as yours. I
might go to the cinema to watch a film but I’ll probably just
stay in and watch TV.
Diary
Part Two
This is a page from Joan Jett’s diary for next week. Joan is a pop singer. Read the diary
and then answer the questions on the following page.
63
64
Part Two (continued)
1. What is Joan doing every day apart from on Friday and Sunday?
2. On which evenings is she doing a concert?
3. When is she going to organise her next world tour?
4. On what day is she going to record a CD?
5. Where does Joan get her stage clothes?
6. Why is Joan going to the Ritz on Monday?
7. On what day is Joan doing nothing?
Film reviews
This is a very funny cartoon
with excellent characters and
a very good storyline. The
main character is an ugly
monster with a good heart
and he is in love with a
princess who turns out to be
a monster too. Great to
watch with your friends both
young and old!
Part Three
This is OK if you like action
movies. There are obviously
lots of car chases but not
much else. The main
characters are uninteresting
and it is only suitable for
adults. Only watch this if
you’ve got nothing else to do!
It’s not quite as good as the
TV series and is a little bit too
long. Nevertheless both
adults and children will enjoy
this if only because they all
know the characters already.
Read the film reviews above and then answer the following questions. You must choose
film A, B or C.
1. Which film has the worst review? A B C
2. Which film is for people who like action movies? A B C
3. Which film would you watch if you wanted to laugh? A B C
4. Which film is not suitable for children? A B C
5. Which film has the best review? A B C
6. Which film has characters who we already know? A B C
65
Part Four
Answer the following questions with full sentences.
1. What are you doing this weekend?
2. What are your hobbies?
3. What will you do first thing Saturday morning?
4. What is your favourite TV programme?
5. What is your favourite film?
6. What kind of music do you like?
66
Part Four (continued)
7. What kind of music do your parents like?
8. Who’s your favourite band?
9. Do you like traditional music?
10. Do you like dancing?
67
68
11
Part One
Nature
Look at the pictures below and then complete the gaps in the descriptions.
1.
Dinosaurs were reptiles
hundreds of thousands of years ago. They are now extinct and we
only
that they once existed because of fossils.
2.
Dolphins are mammals that live in the .
People say that dolphins
very intelligent.
3.
Mosquitoes are which
can you.
In some countries they are very dangerous.
Part Two
Now write your own descriptions using complete sentences.
A wolf
A volcano is
Feathers are
A forest is
69
70
Part Three
Read the paragraph below about why some people disagree with zoos. Then look at the
statements that follow and decide if they are true (A), false (B) or not in the text (C).
Some people believe that keeping animals in zoos is very cruel. They feel that it is
not fair for animals to be locked up in cages and think that they should be free to live in
their natural environment. Although zoos try to make the environment like the
geography of the place where the animal comes from, they obviously can’t imitate things
like oceans and deserts. For example, seals and polar bears should live by oceans not
near a small lake. They need more space and should be able to swim for miles not just
the length of a swimming pool.
1. Some people believe zoos do not allow animals to live happily.
A True B False C Not in text
2. Zoos try and make the place different to where the animals usually live.
A True B False C Not in text
3. Some zoos try to build oceans and deserts and spend lots money doing this.
A True B False C Not in text
4. In some zoos seals and polar bears can swim for miles and miles just like in the
ocean.
A True B False C Not in text
5. No animals that live in zoos are happy.
A True B False C Not in text
Part Four
Now read about why people agree with zoos and choose a suitable word from the options
below to fill in the gaps.
Zoos
Other people, however, feel that there are some (1) ____________________ reasons
for having zoos. Firstly we are able to see animals from all over the
(2)___________________. If we didn’t have zoos we wouldn’t know what a lion or
tiger (3) ____________________ in real life! In addition many parts of our
(4)____________________ – our seas, oceans and forests - are being damaged by
(5) ____________________. Flooding from the (6) ____________________ of the ice
caps is also threatening the (7) ____________________ of some animals.
Some types of animals (8) ____________________ extinct. Zoos are places where
these animals can continue to breed through scientific methods and so are able to
live on. A more natural type of zoo is a (9) ____________________ park. Here
animals live in a more (10) ____________________ environment and visitors drive
through in their cars. This is great but it is not always possible.
1. good bad interesting
2. world place building
3. appeared looked like became
4. planet nature zoos
5. fire water pollution
6. melts melting melted
7. survival death food
8. become are becoming became
9. play safari community
10. natural unnatural warm
71
72
Part Five
Look at the diagram and complete the sentences below using the words in the brackets.
1. First the water _______________ (rise, rises, raises) from the seas in to the air.
2. The air rises and the water vapour forms ___________ (clouds, cloudy, cloud).
3. The clouds then ____________ (rises, risen, rise) higher.
4. As they rise over mountains the clouds ______________ (cools, cool, cooled)
down, and as a result it _____________ (rained, rain, rains).
5. The water ____________ (falls, fall, fell) on the mountains and goes back into
the seas through rivers and streams.
Part Six
Now put the number for each of the above processes (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5) into the correct
box in the diagram.
12
Vocabulary lists
The following vocabulary lists are presented according to topic and consist of the
core vocabulary that should be learnt for JETSET Level 3. The JETSET vocabulary
lists are progressive and each level builds on the learning achieved from the previous
level. As such, these lists include all of the words that should have been learnt for the
preceding levels of JETSET.
It is important to note that these vocabulary lists are not definitive but do represent
the core of vocabulary used in the JET SET Level 3 exams.
Dear John,
Finally, here’s my letter! I’m having a lovely time. The sun is shining now but when we first
arrived in the evening it was really foggy and you could only see a metre or two in front. We
arrived late because the plane was delayed. Anyway the flight was good and we had a lovely
stewardess who looked after us and gave us free drinks!
The weather is lovely here – it is very hot but you’ve got to be careful in the sun otherwise
you’ll get sunburn. The forecast is fair for the next week but there could / may / might be a
thunderstorm or two.
There’s lots to do here. Yesterday we went for a bike ride but my bicycle broke down - there
was no air in my tyre because I had a puncture! When it was fixed I rode to the top of a
mountain - the view was great.
This evening are going to go to the cinema or maybe to the theatre. We have not decided
which yet.
I’ll see you when I get / return home.
Wish you were here.
Yours sincerely / truly
Dave
I had an accident –
I have hurt my ankle.
I fell while I was playing hockey.
Let me have a look. It’s quite swollen.
Did you slip or were you knocked down?
It was my fault. I slipped.
Well it is quite a bad injury. You will need to go to
hospital and have a proper bandage put on. Call the
hospital and tell them it is an emergency.

Not sure yet. I think I will wait and see how well I do in
my exams – what about you?
When I finish / leave school and am over 18, I want to have a really
exciting job – like my dad, he’s a businessman. His phone is
always ringing and he is always going off to meetings – he really
seems to enjoy that.
Well I want to go to university and study something. The careers
advisor told / advised me that I should think very carefully about the
subjects I choose next year for my exams. Maybe I could be an
engineer or something like that.
Umm well they build bridges and roads… I think they are actually the
people who / that design them but they don’t actually build them.
Well he is, but he used to be a builder. He started training as a
builder when he finished / left school but now he runs his own
building business.
Ahhh I see… I don’t want to do anything physical or practical like
a builder or an electrician. I mean you could get electrocuted!
Or a fireman because you might get burned or even die putting out a fire!
Well the only thing I can think of is being a chef… I think I’d really
like that job. I really like cooking and eating.
Yesterday James went to buy some clothes.
He saw a smart wool jacket and tried it on. His chest size is 44 inches but the jacket was 46.
It was too big so he tried on a smaller size.
He wanted to buy a blue shirt for less than 20 pounds. The shop had one that was his size
and only cost £15 so he decided to buy it.
He then looked for a pair of trousers. His waist size is 32 but the trousers were size 30. They
were too small so he looked for a bigger pair.
At the shoe shop he found two pair of shoes he liked. One pair cost £45 the other £33. They
both looked nice but because the difference in price was big he bought the cheaper pair.
