Sports Facilities Director
Sports Complex
Getting Fit
As winter weather starts to limit outdoor activities, this is a
great time to add weight training to fitness regimens. The
Sports Center has a variety of strength training equipment to
meet your needs. Also, there is a TV/VCR set up in the exercise
classroom at the Sports Center for member use. We
have several Yoga, Pilates and workout videos to choose
from, or you are welcome to bring your own. Gather some
workout buddies and start your own class!
Here are some weight training do’s and don’ts to help get you started.
Warm Up
Warm muscles are more receptive to weight training. Start with 5 to 10
minutes of light cardio to prepare your body for training.
Proper Form
Strength training is safer and more effective if you use proper technique. If
you are unfamiliar with weight training exercises, call Tim Dixon for an
orientation or personal training appointment.
Appropriate Weight
Choose a weight that allows you to complete 10 to 15 repetitions with
good form and with the last couple being a little more difficult. As you get
stronger, gradually increase the weight.
Breathe
Resist the tendency to hold your breath when lifting weights. Breathe out
when executing the lift, breathe in when returning to the starting position.
Balance Your Workout
Be sure to work all major muscle groups equally. If you work your chest,
work your back. If you work your quadriceps, work your hamstrings. If
you work biceps, work your triceps. By working opposing muscles you
will have a balanced workout.
Rest
Always have a day of rest between weight training workouts. This allows
the muscle to re-build stronger in response to your training. Three workouts
per week is ideal although twice per week will also produce results.
Massage
Tina Penland, Licensed Massage Therapist, offers Swedish, Therapeutic and Deep
Tissue massage at our Sports Center. She also works at Keck Physical Therapy in
Horse Shoe, NC. Cost for a one-hour massage is $60. To schedule an appointment,
call Tina directly at 828-606-0258.
Winter Classes & Activities
During winter months, Vanessa Santucci will teach Chair Yoga Wednesdays at 9:30.
Donna Edwards will teach Zumba Thursdays at 8:30. Classes will continue so long
as there is a sufficient number of participants. There is no fee for the classes, but
donations are appreciated. Mixed Doubles “Show Up” Tennis is on the DecoTurf
Bridal Veil Falls, January 9,
Wednesday, Noon
Meet at the C. C. Fitness Center, lunch
eaten, for trip to Bridal Veil Falls at Du-
Pont Forest. This is one of the crown
jewels of western North Carolina and is
the site of many movie scenes. The hike
is mostly easy with some moderate trails
to the falls via Fawn Lake, Airstrip,
Barn and Bridal Veil Falls Road. Total
round trip is about 5.5 miles.
Daniel Ridge Loop, February 15,
Thursday, Noon
Meet at Fitness Center, lunch eaten, to
hike Daniel Ridge Loop, a fabulous four
mile moderate and hilly loop trail which
Twin Falls in Pisgah Forest follows the upper Davidson River and
Lanning Branch, each with cascades.
See open forest, rhododendron thickets, plank and log water crossings with the
grand finale—a 90 degree waterfall.
Twin Falls in Pisgah Forest
Wednesday, March 13, Noon
According to Hiking Waterfalls in North Carolina, Twin Falls is “Dazzling!
First you are treated to the small but lovely waterfall on Avery Creek . . . hike
from trail to trail to Twin Falls. Like two sisters in the wild, they flow separately
yet unite to form one trusting bond as they meet at the creek.” Four
miles out and back, it is easy to moderate with hard-packed dirt, rocky and
wet sections. Meet at the Fitness Center, lunch eaten.
Foster Creek Wildflower Hike
Monday, March 18, 8:30
Meet at Fitness Center for early morning wildflower easy hike/walk. Total distance is
Cummings Cove Realty Update
8
The Housing Market is Back!
CNNMoney graph on left shows
National Median Home Price
rise from $175,500 in 2009 to
$185,000 by mid-2012. J. P.
Morgan Chase forecasts home
prices could jump 9.7% in 2013.
After five difficult years, real estate is back according to just about everybody. J. P. Morgan
Chase may be a bit more bullish with its 2013 forecast than Standard & Poor’s prediction of
a 5% price increase. In the past five years, new home inventories plunged to their lowest
level in 50 years while interest rates dropped similarly and foreclosure rates soared. Now the
pendulum is swinging back with record low mortgage rates continuing, improving jobs market
and years of pent-up demand unleashed. Experts predict over one million new households
will form this year. The limited supply of new homes and a sharp drop in foreclosures
has resulted in a tighter supply of homes available to satisfy the demand. While some areas
still have foreclosure problems and millions of homeowners owe more than their homes are
worth, the steady rise in home prices will gradually offset much of the disparity. Cummings
Cove Realty looks forward to a busy and prosperous new year as we continue to attract new
residents to the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and to Cummings Cove—“One of
America’s 50 Best Master-Planned Communities.”
Cummings Cove Realty sold 35 properties in 2012 totaling nearly $9 million.
Recent sales include a Mountain Crest homesite purchased by residents Larry Smith and
Laura Misner. Gary and Nancy Gilchrist from Mills River have also purchased a Mountain
Crest homesite. From Detroit, Michigan, Bob and Kathy Watkins bought the Sims’ Cove
Knob home. Mark and Joani Robson of Tallahassee, Florida, now own the former Anderson-
Nelson Wynfield home. Sandro and Lorraine Francioni from South Elgin, Illinois, acquired
the Neely property in the Meadows. Hendersonville residents Barry and Jill McMillion
moved to the Cove Summit Park villa formerly owned by the Vallars. From Homosassa,
Florida, Ray and Brenda Schnell purchased the Bernero’s home in the Meadows.
Lee Nichols and Joan Kaminski, from Chocowinity, North Carolina, bought the Cove Woods
