The offi cial newsletter of Brimbank City Council Autumn 2012 Deer Park
District

Message from Brimbank’s Administrators
For many of you the start to 2012 was diffi cult considering the
dramatic hailstorm that hit parts of Brimbank on Christmas Day 2011.
We want you, as our community, to know that our thoughts were
with you and your families. Most importantly we trust that you have
been able to work through the problems caused and your lives have
returned to normal.
Recovery was a combined eff ort and we thank the SES, the
Red Cross, the Salvation Army, the DHS, the Insurance Council of
Australia and the Insurance Response Team as well as our own
Council staff who from Christmas Day through to early January
were part of an Information Centre providing residents with aid,
assistance and advice.
One thing that certainly shone through during this challenging
time was the depth of community spirit shown by our community...
it was inspiring.
We saw neighbours helping neighbours, opening their homes, helping
with repairs, lending household goods and cars and, generally just
being there for each other.
Speaking of community, the focus of this edition of Your Brimbank
is on our community. Many positives happen in Brimbank, whether
by individuals, groups or Council itself. We hope that you enjoy
reading the profi les on our wonderful and dedicated volunteers,
the recipients of our 2011/2012 Community Grants program,
the people who received 2012 Australia Day Awards as well as a
centre spread on Brimbank’s whole of community and multicultural
celebration, the Brimbank Festival… put Saturday 24 March in your
diary as a must do.
Your Brimbank – Autumn Edition
Continuing our commitment to taking Council Meetings to the
community, in 2012, Council and Planning meetings have already
been held in Deer Park in February with March meetings scheduled
for Delahey. A complete calendar of 2012 Council meetings, venues,
dates and times is available on the website at www.brimbank.vic.
gov.au/About_Council/Council/Council_Meetings
Once again in a boost for our community, Council welcomed the news
that the Regional Rail Link (RRL) project, Australia’s largest public
transport infrastructure project, is to go ahead. This news is great
for Brimbank and certainly great for Sunshine and will add value to
Council’s commitment to revitalising the Sunshine Town Centre.
We are thrilled that through RRL, the Sunshine Station will
undergo redevelopment and provide better linkages, safer
access, and a more integrated transport precinct not to mention
a much safer environment for commuters, pedestrians, cyclists
and the community.
The other very important improvement which Council is pleased to
see is the two road/rail separations at level crossings on Anderson
Road in Sunshine.
One very important reminder is that 2012 is the National Year
of Reading and in Brimbank our libraries are one of our greatest
community assets. Make sure you take advantage of some of the
wonderful activities that the Libraries have organised… we look
forward to sharing our favourite books and stories with you over
the coming year.
Fit and Healthy
Deer Park Tennis Club
uses grant to improve
community health
A new program to educate residents about health
and fitness, and perhaps to hone their skills on
the tennis court, is underway at Deer Park Tennis
Club through the ‘Fit and Healthy Tennis’ program.
‘Fit and Healthy Tennis’ commenced in late January and will
continue until mid year. It is supported by Brimbank City Council
through a $2,500 grant provided under its 2011/2012 Community
Grants Program.
Deer Park Tennis Club Treasurer, Shane Braszell said the ‘Fit and
Healthy Tennis’ program was open to everyone, but was especially
aimed at newly arrived residents to provide information about
healthy lifestyles including diet and, of course, tennis.
“Our Fit and Healthy Tennis project aims to provide the community
of Deer Park an opportunity to participate in our club social group
fi tness and tennis program,” Mr Braszell said.
“The program will ultimately lead to improved community health
and fi tness. It will also provide general education regarding health
and fi tness awareness and the associated community benefi ts.”
The program is run as part of the social tennis evenings on Tuesday
and Sunday evenings (7–9.30pm) where a personal trainer runs group
fi tness activities, which can include tennis-related activities.
“We’re hoping they might want to become involved in the social
night. We can teach them the game,” Mr Braszell said.
Mr Braszell said this was the fi rst time the club had applied for a grant
through the Council’s Community Grants Program and was “ecstatic”
they had been successful.
“It’s important to get that support from the Council.”
Instructor Sherridan Rich teaches Jacqueline
to keep her eye on the ball.
He said sporting clubs such as theirs brought people together
to be involved and connect with where they live.
The ‘Fit and Healthy Tennis’ program is free to participate in, but
participants should come prepared with runners, appropriate clothes
and a water bottle. Social tennis evenings at Deer Park Tennis Club
cost $5.
Portable magic: the Home Library Service
“Books are a uniquely portable magic,” according to thriller writer
Stephen King, and the Home Library Service established by
Brimbank City Council in 2010 proves the point.
Residents stuck at home with mobility problems are no longer
deprived of the joys of borrowing books and other library items.
Every month the service’s 27 volunteers deliver packages of up
to 30 specially selected books, DVDs and magazines to people in
13 diff erent nursing homes plus 86 individual residents at home.
What makes this service so valuable is that volunteers often stop
to have a cuppa and a chat.
The Home Library Service has certainly worked magic for Melba
Rivera and Mithoo Shome.
For Melba Rivera, volunteering for the Home Library Service is
a way of paying her dues to her adopted country. Melba, who
emigrated from the Philippines and has lived in Derrimut for the
past six years, works as a part-time community care worker
with the aged.
“I love working with the elderly which is one of the reasons
I volunteered for the service after fi nding out about it at the
library. I have four of my fi ve children at home, plus a foster child,
and operate on the basis of never having a dull moment. I go to
the library a lot on my own account. I read everything – books
about health, food and family matters, autobiographies, and
detective and romance novels. Obama’s Dreams From My Father,
is a favourite,” she said.
“Mithoo is one of three residents I deliver to. We usually chat for
around half an hour over a cup of tea and sometimes we talk by
phone. I don’t fi nd it all that hard to choose books for Mithoo
– if I’m stuck, Christine Box, the coordinator, is on hand for advice.
“I am so happy that Brimbank has this program for the elderly.
I urge more people to volunteer. It’s not just about the books
– it’s the human contact involved.”
Kings Park resident, Mithoo Shome, emigrated from India in the
seventies. A retired psychologist, she’s now on a walker and
relies on the Home Library Service for her reading material. She
discovered the service on a visit of the Errington Community
Centre seniors’ group to the library.
“I usually prefer ‘old-fashioned’ writers such as Oscar Wilde,
Shakespeare, Somerset Maughan, the Bronte sisters, George
Bernard Shaw and Jane Austen. I still read poetry such as
Tennyson and Wordsworth. Recently, I’ve also given Clive
Cussler’s modern-day thrillers a go,” she said.
“Melba has a good idea of what I like. The great advantage of
the library books is that I can get them in large print versions.
I also re-read some of my own books but I have to do that with
a magnifying glass so I can’t do it for too long.”
Mithoo has just bought a new television with a built-in DVD
and plans to start borrowing DVDs as well.
Includes the neighbourhoods of Albanvale, Cairnlea, Deer Park and Derrimut
2012 is the National Year of Reading and the Council
is keen to extend the Home Library Service.
To receive or volunteer for the Home Library Service go to
www.brimbanklibraries.vic.gov.au or ring 9249 4180.
Brimbank City Council also
runs a Community Register whose
volunteers make regular phone calls
to check on residents who are older
and/or experiencing a form of disability,
and isolated at home.
Visit www.brimbank.vic.gov.au
or call 9249 4000 for more information.
Spotlight on Brimbank
The Brimbank Foundation
At the heart of our community
With a new logo, website and fundraising campaign, the
Brimbank Foundation launched its 2011 Festive Season Giving
Appeal in November.
Businesses and suppliers within the Brimbank municipality
were invited to contribute to the Appeal with the focus being on
supporting charities focused on helping young people within the
municipality of Brimbank.
We say a big thank you to those companies who chose to support
the Appeal. Your donations are matched dollar-for-dollar by the Lord
Mayor’s Charitable Foundation (LMCF) which has been supporting
charities throughout metropolitan Melbourne for 88 years.
A donor recognition function is scheduled to be held in March this year
and we look forward to welcoming and acknowledging our newest
donors and, introducing them to some of the young people who will
benefi t from their support.
The Brimbank Foundation is a charitable trust account set up for the
Brimbank community by the Brimbank City Council under the Lord
Mayor’s Charitable Foundation Local Government Charitable Trust
Account Scheme.
The aim of the charitable trust account is to build capital that
will grow in perpetuity, generate interest and dividends and
provide funding to support the work of local charities and
community organisations through a dedicated grants program
commencing in 2012.
There are two ways to support the Foundation, whether as an
individual or as a business, you can either make a Perpetual Fund
donation or give to our Inaugural Giving Grants. What’s the diff erence?
Perpetual Fund Donations enable the interest to be used by the
Brimbank Foundation each year. With the support of the Lord Mayor’s
Your Brimbank – Autumn Edition
Charitable Foundation every dollar donated to Brimbank Foundation
Perpetual Fund is matched equally up to a total of $100,000 until
30 June 2012.
Inaugural Giving Grants enable the total amount donated
to be used by the Brimbank Foundation to make a signifi cant
donation to a nominated community organisation shortly after
receipt of the donation.
Remember all philanthropic donations are tax deductible and that
through the partnership between Brimbank City Council and the
Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation, “your donation today is doubled
tomorrow to benefi t Brimbank’s community.”
our community, both now and into the future.
We hope that you will consider joining us in continuing to build
a better and brighter Brimbank and make it a great place to live
Did you know?
Nearly half the population struggles without
the literacy skills to meet the most basic
demands of everyday life and work.
Forty-six per cent of Australians can’t read
newspapers; follow a recipe; make sense of
timetables, or understand the instructions
on a medicine bottle.
