Tennis SA 2012 Winter Pennant 

All matches shall be played in accordance with the Rules 

of Tennis as adopted by Tennis SA Inc and according to 

current Tennis Australia instructions on Etiquette and 

Code of Conduct. Team Captains are expected to apply 

these rules and to exercise control over their own players 

in all respects relating to match play, discipline, sportsmanship, 

etc. 

By - Laws 

1. MANAGEMENT: 

• The Winter Pennant Committee of Management shall 

control all matches and resolve all disputes. 

2. ELIGIBILITY / REGISTRATIONS / CLEARANCES: 

• This is a TENNIS SA conducted competition. 

• All players must be registered (if not already so) with 

Tennis SA after playing three (3) matches. 

• Players must be registered with Tennis SA to 

compete in finals 

• New players shall be nominated on the bottom of 

the score sheet at the time of their first match 

• All information must be supplied 

• PENALTY for not nominating: Loss of two premiership 

points per match played. 

• Newly nominated players who substantially alter the 

general standard of the team as originally graded, 

may not be accepted by the Committee. 

• Penalty – Loss of sets played by that player. Teams 

may check with relevant Recording Secretary 

regards qualification, by phone before 7pm Thursday 

night prior to match. 

• No player is permitted to move over more than one 

player, either up or down, without permission of the 

relevant Recording Secretary. Penalty to be decided 

by Committee 

• No player shall play for more than one club in any 

one series unless with a written clearance from that 

club and the written approval of the Committee. No 

clearance will be approved after four programmed 

matches. PENALTY: Loss of all sets played by offending 

player 

• Where a club has two (2) teams in a division; once a 

player has played four (4) matches in one team, that 

player cannot transfer to the other team without the 

written approval of the Committee. PENALTY: Loss of 

all sets played by offending player 

• TENNIS SA blacklisted players are not permitted to 

play. PENALTY: Loss of four (4) premiership points. 

3. COURTS: 

• Courts will not be accepted unless they are of good 

standard with lines clearly defined and good quality 

nets with straps. Court drying equipment must be 

available 

• No player can be forced to play on unsafe wet courts 

or when rain is falling. 

• Clubs playing on synthetic grass or clay courts, 

which are unable to be used due to waterlogging, 

will forfeit unless suitable alternative courts are 

provided for the match. 

• In-door courts will not be accepted or used, except 

with prior written approval of the Committee. 

• The Committee reserves the right to refuse any 

courts considered unsuitable. 

4. MATCH PROCEDURE 

• Matches to commence at 1.00pm. 

• Players shall be listed in order of merit on the score 

sheet. Captains shall exchange score sheets with 

players listed before match commences. 

• Singles Competition: Teams may consist of up to 6 

players with the fifth and sixth players being able to 

play in the singles.. Doubles – Best of 2 tiebreak sets 

(12 point tiebreak at 6 all, 1st to 7 points with advantage 

of 2) with third set if required being a match 

tiebreak (first to 10 points with an advantage of 2 

points, record score as 7-6). Singles – Best of 3 set 

rubber (12 point tiebreaker at 6 all, first to 7 points 

with advantage of 2). 

• Doubles shall be played first in all divisions except 

Premier Division – Singles first. 

• Players not present and ready to play by 1.15pm 

shall forfeit their doubles. 

• Any team with less than 4 players present at 

2.00pm shall forfeit singles from the lowest position. 

(except Premier Division.) 

• Doubles only Competition: Teams may consist of up 

to 5 players, see reference sheet for order to be used 

in rotation for 5 players. The rotations for 4 players 

are; 

Rotation 1 - 1 & 2 v 1 & 2 3 & 4 v 3 & 4 

Rotation 2 – 1 & 3 v 1 & 3 2 & 4 v 2 & 4 

Rotation 3 - 1 & 4 v 1 & 4 2 & 3 v 2 & 3 

• Mens matches shall be of 2 sets – 12 point tie-break 

to be played at 6 all, a total of 12 sets. 

• Womens matches shall be 1 set – 12 point tie-break 

to be played at 8 all, a total of 6 sets.

women.

5. TEAM FORFEITS: 

• In singles and doubles matches a team receiving a 

forfeit shall receive 10 points, 6 rubbers, 12 sets and 

72 games. In doubles only mens matches a team 

receiving a forfeit shall receive 16 points, 12 sets, and 

72 games. In doubles only womens matches a team 

receiving a forfeit shall receive 10 points, 6 sets, and 

54 games. 

• The team forfeiting a match shall advise their opponents 

as early as possible prior to the match and 

forward a written explanation to the Recording 

Secretary within three days. The team receiving the 

forfeit shall forward a completed score sheet to claim 

their points. 

• Any team forfeiting three matches may be removed 

from the competition. 

6. TENNIS BALLS: 

• Only Tennis Australia approved balls may be used. 

• Minor rounds – Home teams to provide approved 

new balls irrespective of court surface. A minimum 

of 8 for Open Divisions and a minimum of 6 for 

all other divisions. Premier Division home teams to 

supply a minimum of 16 balls 

• Major rounds – Each team shall provide 4 new balls 

and each Premier Division team to provide a minimum 

of 8 balls. 

7. SCORING: 

• In Singles Competition, matches shall be decided 

by rubbers, where rubbers are even, by sets and 

where sets are even, by games. Four points shall be 

awarded for a win and two points for a draw, plus 

one point for each rubber won. 

• In Doubles Only Competition, four points to be 

awarded for a win and two for a draw, plus one point 

for each set won. 

8. FORWARDING AND RECORDING OF RESULTS: 

• Each captain shall, on completion of match, 

complete their score sheet, have same signed 

by opposing captain and forward results to reach 

Recording Secretary before 7.00pm the following 

Tuesday. 

• PENALTY: Loss of all points for that match. 

• PHONE SUNDAY MAIL: Winning captains are to 

phone results to the Sunday Mail as soon as possible 

after 5.00pm and no later than 6.45pm on Saturday 

night. 

• WEB RESULTS: All teams shall logon to the system 

Friday or before 7.00pm Saturday and name their 

team each week. This enables the efficient entering 

of results. The home team of each round shall 

enter results by no later than 5.00 pm on the Monday 

following the match. The away team may confirm or 

dispute the match results by 5.00 pm on the Wednesday 

following the match. 

• PENALTY: Loss of 2 points to the home team not 

entering results by 5.00 pm Monday after the 

match.

9. DISPUTES. 

• All reports, disputes or complaints must be made in 

writing (not on match score sheet). 

• Such correspondence must go to the Winter 

Competition Coordinator by 7.00pm on the Tuesday 

following the match and must be signed by the 

team contact. Club contact to send confirmation 

letter to Winter Competition Coordinator by Thursday 

post or email to tallen@tennis.com.au. 

10. WEATHER CONDITIONS: 

• Weather cancellations will be made at the discretion 

of the Chairperson in consultation with other 

Committee members as deemed necessary. 

• To check on match cancellations phone 8411 1512 

after 11.00am on match day or check on website 

http://sites.google.com/site/winterpennant/ (do 

not include www), or link at www.tennis.com.au/ 

sa>Competitions>Winter Pennant. Unless such 

an announcement is made, players must be present 

on time. Any minor round match cancelled in 

accordance with this rule shall be deleted from the 

programme. 

• Minor round matches shall be played on the day 

set down and the score at the finish of play on 

that day shall be reckoned as the final result of 

the match. Lights are not to be used, except for 

Premier League which may use lights. If no set is 

commenced by 3.00pm the match will be abandoned. 

If no set is completed by 4.00pm the match 

will be abandoned. Teams must submit score sheet 

as usual. IIf 50% or more of matches in a Division 

have achieved a result, Premiership Points will be 

allocated and in these Divisions the matches that 

did not achieve a result will be allocated points 

for Rubbers/Sets won (where applicable), plus 2 

Premiership Points. 

• Major round matches, If no set commenced by 

3.00pm the match will be abandoned unless by 

mutual agreement. If no rubber in singles competition 

or first rotation in doubles competition is 

completed by 4.00pm the match will be abandoned 

unless by mutual agreement. Teams must submit 

score sheet as usual. 

• Semi-finals will be played on scheduled day and 

if a result is achieved that will stand, if no result 

achieved the higher placed team at the conclusion 

of the minor round will play in the Grand Final. 

• Grand Final matches will be played on scheduled 

day and if no result achieved play will continue on 

or before the following Saturday, times by mutual 

agreement, to be arranged before leaving the 

courts. The existing score stands and play continues 

from that score eg; if the game score is 3-1 then that 

set continues from 3-1. The same players must play 

If no result achieved after second week the higher 

placed team at the conclusion of the minor round 

will be declared Premiers. 

• Lights may be used to complete MAJOR ROUND 

matches. 

11. QUALIFICATION FOR MAJOR ROUND. 

• To play in any major round match in a particular 

competition, a player must have played the 

required number of minor round matches in that 

grade or a lower grade. Five matches required for 

Divisions that play 13 or 14 matches. Four matches 

required for Divisions that play 12 or less matches . 

• Each team taking part in major round matches shall 

forward a list of players, including reserves, showing 

doubles and singles in order, to reach the. 

• Recording Secretary on the MONDAY immediately 

before the day of match. 

• Only listed players shall take part in the match and 

players MUST play in the listed order. Teams not 

adhering to the approved order shall forfeit the 

match. Amended lists may be lodged for subsequent 

matches. The listed players shall be in the 

order played during the year. 

12. MAJOR ROUND. 

• The four leading teams at the end of the minor 

round shall play in the major round. The position of 

each team in the Singles Competition is decided by 

points, then rubbers, then sets, then games. 

• The position of each team in Doubles Only Competition 

is decided by points, then sets, then games. 

• Semi-Finals and Grand Finals are to be scheduled 

with higher ranked team playing at home courts 

where possible and at the discretion of Committee. 

Week 1. Semi-Final 1: 1v4 

Semi-Final 2: 2v3 

Week 2. Grand Final 

Winner of Semi-Final 1 v Winner of Semi-Final 2 

• In the event of a drawn match in the finals. (i.e.). 

Equal number of rubbers, sets and games, the winner 

shall be the higher placed team at the conclusion of 

the minor round. 

• The third Saturday will be reserved to complete 

Grand Finals matches not completed due to the 

weather. 

• All players will be expected to be available if this situation 

eventuates. See Rule 10 for further details. 

13. RECORDING SECRETARIES. 

• The Committee shall appoint Recording Secretaries 

as necessary 

• Fixtures, Results & Premiership Tables will be available 

on website. Go to www.tennis.com.au/

• They are authorised to resolve disputes, impose 

penalties as laid down in BY-LAWS or others in 

consultation with Disputes Chairperson. Such decisions 

to be presented to full Committee at next 

meeting 

• Teams or players have right of appeal to full Committee. 

14. DISPUTES 

• All disputes are to be forwarded to the Winter 

Competition Coordinator. Any dispute may be 

referred to the Disputes Committee consisting of 

the Winter Pennant Chairperson and the Recording 

Secretaries. 

15. APPEALS 

• Decisions of the committee may be appealed to the 

Tennis SA Disciplinary and Appeals committee. 

16. HONORARIA / EXPENSES. 

• Shall be paid as decided by Committee. 

17. AMENDMENTS TO BY-LAWS. 

• The Committee may repeal or amend the By-laws as 

necessary, for the management and well being of 

the competition. Any such change will be advised in 

the next newsletter or on the Tennis SA web-site. 

Code of Conduct 

All matches shall be played in accordance with the Rules 

of Tennis as adopted by TENNIS SA INC., and according to 

current TENNIS AUSTRALIA instructions on Etiquette and 

Code of Conduct. Team Captains are expected to exercise 

control over their own players in all respects relating 

to match play, discipline, sportsmanship, etc. 

The following Code Violations have been based on the 

Tennis Australia Code of Conduct. 

Code violations include: 

• Coaching of any type from any person while a set is 

in progress. 

• Audible Obscenity during any match within the 

precincts of the match. 

• Visible Obscenity during any match within the 

precincts of the match. 

• Physical Abuse of any official, opponent, spectator or 

other person. 

• Verbal Abuse of any official, opponent, spectator or 

other person. 

• Consumption of alcohol within court enclosure. 

• Playing while intoxicated by alcohol or other 

substances.
