Playground Campaign 2013 ........ see page 20
With help from the community, we raised $10,045.00. In addition, we received a grant from KaBoom and Dr. Pepper/Snapple for $20,000; a match from the John Randolph Foundation in
the amount of $15,000; and another match of $15,000 through the City of Hopewell, which together allowed us to build the playground. There will also be a kiosk added to highlight information
dealing with health and wellness; in the upcoming month we will add a three station adult exercise unit; and we are working with the Civitan Club to add a swing set by early Spring.
A Day in Virginia’s Northern Neck
Come join your friends as they venture northeast
toward Virginia’s beautiful Northern Neck. This
morning, travel to the birthplace of Robert E. Lee and
one of the great houses of American history, Stratford
Hall Plantation. Its magnificent setting on a high bluff
above the Potomac River and its bold architectural
style set it apart from any other colonial house, but its
highest distinction is the family of patriots who lived
there. The Plantation is still managed as a farm today
on 1600 of its original acres. There will be a guided
tour as well as time to visit the gift shop.
Enjoy a plated lunch at Stratford Hall’s Plantation
Dining Room. Your next stop is for a wine tasting
and tour at Ingleside Winery, one of Virginia’s oldest
and largest wineries. They have been producing
award winning wines since 1980. Learn about
winemaking with an educational guided tour and
enjoy a “tasting” of many of their fine wines. End
your visit to the Northern Neck with a visit to the
popular Westmoreland Berry Farm. They have a
wonderful open-air market selling fresh strawberries
(in season), jams and jellies, bakes goods, unique gift
items and most importantly - strawberry ice cream
sundaes - their specialty (included in tour price)!
Places to Play and Grow
Would your organization/club/individual
like to adopt one of our parks?
We are looking to more organizations/clubs/individuals to adopt a park as we work towards all park sites to be
part of the program. If you are interested, please call Steve Howard, our Maintenance Specialist at 804-541-2353
or email him at showard@hopewellva.gov
Playground Campaign
Mathis Pirate Playground
We could not have done our
first playground site without all of
the community support through our
Playground Campaign! We also
have a kiosk at the site highlighting
information and soon we will be
placing a fitness board with various
exercises that mom, dad, grandma
or granddad can do while watching
the younger ones. We will also place
a bench for those that may need to
sit as well, and we will be adding a
small swing by Spring 2013 with the
help from the Civitan Club.
We will continue the Playground
Campaign in 2013 by enhancing
more of our playground sites. Our
Recreation Commission is working
hard evaluating our information from
the Master Plan, Census and School
data as to where most of our younger
youth live throughout the community.
They will also tour the playground
sites as some areas ranked lower
than others. Once sites are selected
we will reach out to the neighborhood
watch groups to receive feedback as
to what play equipment the community
would like to see. We will bring
back the Playground Committee to
start fundraising in 2013!
City Park will see a ship play-
ground piece and
some amenities added
to this site as we will
work toward placing
pieces late this year
and into 2013.
It is our hope that we can able to Hopewell Recreation and
work towards updating the other 8 Parks Foundation and can be mailed
