EDITOR’S CORNER
Hi everyone! It’s been said that people spend more time planning their vacations than
their careers. Vacations are “special” no doubt, but shouldn’t your career be special
too? Since a major part of your life is going to be spent working for a living, career
planning is something everyone should do...
However, career counseling is a relatively new area of work in India. We know very
little about the career counseling process. What we do know is that surprisingly, career
counselors tend to give information and set limits more frequently during career
counseling than during general counseling.
Unfortunately, persons going for counseling also often conclude that career counseling
is a sequence of interventions that resembles the following:
Step 1: Client presents himself/herself for career counseling.
Step 2: Counselor gathers client information and administers a test battery.
Step 3: Counselor interprets test results and identifies a few appropriate occupational
options for the client.
The obvious disadvantages of this system are:
Counselor is in charge of the process.
Counselor is directive and authoritative.
Clients are passive recipients of a predetermined test battery.
Career counseling becomes something that is done to clients rather than something the
counselor and client participate in collaboratively. However, it needs to be
remembered that career counseling is an interpersonal process designed to assist
individuals with career development problems (Brown and Brooks).
Types of support that needs to be given during the process of counselling
- Emotional support - Informational support - Assessment support
Keeping all these aspects in mind, let us look at a framework for Career Counseling
that is most likely to help persons coming for counseling. The following seems to be a
good beginning:
 Helping clients deal with change
Helping clients engage in self-assessment activities
Helping clients learn more about the world of work
Helping clients expand or narrow choices
Helping clients make plans for the future
The importance of career counseling cannot be over-emphasized! The different aspects
of career counseling help the participants identify aspects of self-exploration, support,
and educational preparation. Help and support in making appropriate career choices
is the most important and helpful career counseling intervention!!
Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.
“CAREER CONFUSIONS might lead to DESTRUCTIVE CONCLUSIONS”
Career is a “Profession or occupation with opportunities for advancement or promotion and not just
livelihood.” Choosing the right career can be a very daunting task especially in a world which offers an array
of paths, all of which seem to be leading to a golden goal. Careers can actually make or break one’s life, so it
is important to make the right choice. Choosing a career can be very satisfying if you have made the right
choice. Like the famous adage goes, “if you choose the job you love, you don’t have to work a single day in your
life”. On the other hand, a wrong decision can leave you wishing that you had trodden a different path.
Psyche of today’s individuals is that they never plan for their future, as a result they jump into any
career. They are easily influenced by others, such as media, and always follow the crowd as they get
tempted by the current trends. They live in their own fantasy world. Or they accept the parent’s verdict by
force.
People think I’m successful. I’m well paid, have a nice house and I’m good at my job. But I feel more and
more dissatisfied with what I do. Sometimes, jobseekers find their careers stuck, some like their career in the
beginning, but begin to hate their jobs as time passes, and some face boredom and want a change in career
or job. You may want to change careers, but you are unable to see the clear direction.
Career counselling can guide you in selecting the courses suitable for you. Career counselling is the
process of helping the candidates to select a course of study that may help them to get into job or make them
employable. A career counsellor helps the candidates to get into the career that suits their aptitude,
personality, interest and skills. Career tests do not tell you what you should do, they help you organize your
thoughts and ideas on how to make well informed career decisions. Career counselling can be helpful
whether you are on the threshold of a new career or considering a career change, or in the process of
choosing majors for specializations. It can help you make that right choice. It is a life-long process since the
individual choose an occupation, prepare for it, and make progress in it.
Individual careers will always be a delicate matter where people must carefully plan where they
envision themselves or how they see themselves now and after some years from now. Careers cannot be
taken for granted. They are the bread and butter that make every person unique. There are some who find
themselves in the wrong jobs mainly because it is not really their cup of tea. On the other hand, there are
people who are already in the right profession but are unable to grow for the reason that they do not give
due value to which they can break out of their shell and gain the expected growth and due recognition that
they truly deserve.
Career Counselling Helps Guide Lost Careers - It is only common to find people or professionals that
will somewhere be in need for guidance and help in making decisions. It is not a simple hit and miss ordeal
where a person can immediately shift towards another job. In such decision-making matters, workers
cannot afford to lean on decisions based on judgment alone. It takes careful analysis and the opinion and
guidance of people who are already veterans in these kinds of issues.
Pointing Careers in the Right Direction - Careers not following a certain path will tend to go off track.
Career counselling is not usually taken seriously, but people who are serious about where they stand and
what they need to do to adjust to the situation must be the prime directive for most people who want to get
their career back in track.
2

Seeing the Shortcoming Beforehand - It especially holds true from the saying that the best way to
determine the flaws and shortcomings of a person would be that from the eyes of another. Analysis of past
experiences, working relationships and career outlook can be properly assessed if they are allowed to be
viewed by a third party, more so, a person who specializes in counselling and guidance.
Helps in Finding True Potential - There are children who know what they want to be. And then there
are those who find it tough to make their mind when it comes to choosing a career path. On the basis of
counselling results, students can make informed decisions regarding what course they want to enrol into, to
reach their chosen career destination.
Clears Confusion - Despite being aware of what they want to do, some students usually have no idea
about the academic path they should follow to qualify academically for their chosen field/career.
Counselling can also help students overcome this confusion by giving them clear cut view of what to expect
from various study courses offered by numerous institute.
Helps Make Clear Decisions - Counselling also helps those students, who were raised on
preconceived notions that they must follow the path of their parents, e.g., if both parents are doctors then
kids are expected to be one too. Good counselling session help students see themselves, first and foremost
as an individual, who might not be interested in following on their parents footsteps and could be better
suited for some other career.
Lack of CAREER COUNSELING can lead to MID CAREER CRISIS.
Mid-career employees are more likely to question the meaning of their work, the value of their
company's mission, their job autonomy, their contributions, and their relationships. It’s often a period of
much uncertainty and confusion, and it is likened to an emotional roller coaster ride.
The issue with a mid-career crisis is that it is something that can affect your whole family. Think
about it what a career change could mean to them. Remember that you should not turn away from
something that makes you happy just because you think that your family might not approve. This is
something that you need to speak with your family about. What do they feel about it, and what can you do
to make sure that they are going to be comfortable with this idea. Take some time and really connect with
them about your decisions.
Mid-career crisis can be explained best by using the example of FARHAN from the movie ‘3 IDIOTS’.
He entered the engineering field as per his parents wish but left it incomplete for his interest in WILDLIFE
PHOTOGRAPHY. Had he undergone some sort of CAREER COUNSELING, it would have saved him a good
amount of money and time and he might have escaped this MID-CAREER CRISIS.
Career counselling can provide you with a clear picture of where you are, and which direction you
are headed in. Today, more and more students, jobseekers and career changers are relying on career
websites and portals for professional counsel. Whether it is about making a perfect resume, interviews,
investigating occupations, job search methods or career planning and early career success, it is all there for
you. At the end of the day, it is only you who will be responsible for your career. The counselling career section,
therefore, is dedicated to students, job seekers, working parents, mid-career changers and everyone who is
looking to make an ideal career.
Food Technology is a branch of food science. Food technology is the application of food
science to the selection, preservation, processing, packaging, distribution, and use of safe,
nutritious, and wholesome food. Food processing is the set of methods and techniques used to
transform raw ingredients into food for the consumption of humans and animals. Food scientists
and food technologists study the physical, microbiological, and chemical makeup of food.
Depending on their area of specialization, food scientists may develop ways to process, preserve,
package, or store food, according to industry and government specifications and regulations.
Consumers seldom think of the vast array of foods and the research and development that has
resulted in the means to deliver tasty, nutritious, safe, and convenient foods.
The work of food technologists is mainly in hotels, food industries, quality control, hospitals,
packaging, industries, distilleries, soft drink factories and rice mills, etc. They also are into
CAREER IN HOTEL MANAGEMENT
India has a high potential for the Tourism Industry. Closely related to this is the growth of the Hotel
Industry. Hotels, Motels and Restaurants are a boon to the travellers across the country. For people wanting
to enjoy a relaxing holiday or those who are on a business trip, a comfortable room, good food, and helpful and
courteous staff make the experience enjoyable.
With an increasing need for good hotels, there is also an increasing need for good hotel staff. Hotels
require trained staff in their various departments like housekeeping, front office, food and beverages,
accounting, marketing, and public relations. Employment opportunity in hotels varies with the size of the
hotel, and the clientele it caters to. In cosmopolitan towns, there is a need for more highly trained, skilled,
and efficient workers. In smaller towns, work may be comparatively less.
This dynamic industry offers a great job opportunity for young boys and girls with an outgoing
personality. The person needs to be primarily interested in people, possess a pleasant personality, a flair for
creativity, and a capacity for hard work. The person needs to be prepared for long work hours. There is also a
requirement for discipline and dedication to be successful at the job. This seemingly glamorous job can be
quite tough!
Premier institute offering the course is the National Council for Hotel Management and Catering
Technology, Pusa Complex, New Delhi, and its 23 associated institutes. The course is also conducted by IP
University at Banarsidas Chandiwala International Hotel Management Institute, Kalkaji, New Delhi. There are
also many private institutes, most well know of which is the Indian Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM)
Aurangabad.
An eligibility criterion for the course is after +2. Students with 50% marks from any stream are
eligible for the entrance test on the basis of which the admissions are made. The test comprises of abstract
reasoning, numerical aptitude, verbal reasoning and general awareness.
Switzerland is the leader in hotel industry for those wanting to train abroad. Other destinations for
training in hotel management are Australia and Singapore.
MEANINGFUL MUSINGS
FROM SUCCESSFUL AGEING TO GEROTRANSCENDENCE: PRESENT
GAPS & FUTURE POTENTIAL
Successful ageing till date has been a predominant area of research in the field of ageing and much
work has been done to develop this concept which on the face of it is a positive term. Havighurst (1961), who
labeled successful agers as those persons who lived longer with respect to number of years or absolute
longevity and could find satisfaction in later life. Successful ageing as a concept has undergone several
shifts and shades. Earlier successful ageing meant avoiding bad outcome and preserving health and vitality
now the notion is slowly getting replaced by the second version of revealing the psychological compensating
mechanism enhancing and contributing to every possible experience of positive ageing and ageing
successfully.
The growth of positive psychology has provided a flexible and interpretive paradigm for the growth
of new theories like Gerotranscendence (Tornstam, 1989).The virtue of transcendence, as proposed by
Seligman and Peterson 2004, is linked to the growth of the gerotranscendence movement. Lars Tornstam
proposed his theory on the basis of qualitative interviews with Swedish population. According to him
gerotranscendence is a characteristic typically displayed in old age. A move towards gerotranscendence is
marked with increasing feeling of a cosmic communion with the spirit of the universe, a redefinition of the
perception of time, space, objects, life and death, a decrease in interest in superfluous social interaction, self-
centeredness and material things, and more time spent in meditation. The theory can have vast implications
in the field of gerontology. Gerotranscendence provides a framework through which elders can be supported
to actively engage, disengage or re-engage into socially expected roles, relationships and norms as dictated
by events that occur during the life course. Despite the limitations of this theory like its abstractness and lack
of empirical objectivity, the present paper highly emphasizes this concept as it is expected that movement
towards this theory would break the shackles of the research confined to successful aging. The concept of
gerotranscendence can be explored to a greater extent and a possibility of reaching beyond the present reality
of life and the merger of the Atman with the Bhrama can be looked at which would culminate into cosmic
harmony with the larger universe and would provide meaning to one’s existence.
RORSCHACH TRAINING WORKSHOP –29 – 30 OCTOBER, 2011
The Rorschach Inkblot Training Workshop held by ICDA
was really worth attending. The test was very interesting
and we got a chance to gain knowledge about the test. Both
the systems of test i.e. Kloppfer and Exner of the test were
explained really well. Our interest was maintained
throughout the two days despite the fact that it was lengthy.
On the first day after a brief introductory speech by the
President of ICDA, Prof. Dr. N.K. Chadha, the workshop
began with Ms. Ritu Wadhawan introducing us to the most
popular psychometric test i.e. Rorscharch Inkblot test, its
history, development and application. This was followed
by a fruitful discussion as well as actual administration of
the test and the results were interpreted according to
Klopfer’s system. The second day was taken by Ms. Sonia
who introduced us to the latest system of Exner. Though
this system seemed very lengthy, we kept up to it and
eager to learn. The workshop ended with enthusiastic
participants eager to apply their newly gained knowledge. The workshop was not
only informative and interactive but also extremely beneficial for all present.
The Rorscharch training workshop conducted by ICDA was
extremely useful and enlightening. Although a two day
training for the much elaborate Rorscharch Diagnostiks is
just like a drop in the ocean, the resource persons gave us a
holistic and sufficient knowledge on the same. The workshop
was an extremely fruitful endeavour by the ICDA in helping
students of psychology gain insight into this intriguing
projective personality test. Thank you ICDA!
Q1. What is a Library?
In my personal opinion,
FAQs
“Library is a temple of knowledge and every user is a devotee who comes to worship universe of
knowledge” In other words libraries are treated as a heart of educational setup and system, and plays
a very important and silent role in the growth and development of the society hence a library is an
organization having a properly organized collection of reading material and other source of information.
Libraries of present day are not only the store house of the books but also is analysis centre of
information, hence their responsibilities towards the users increase from the points of view of the usage
and application of the information.
Q2. Who is a Librarian?
Today in the libraries, various functions related to providing information for the users are executed, for
which libraries need a well experienced, skillful, and technically expert person, who is called LIBRARIAN.
or we can say that the librarian is a person who gives maximum information to the users in a minimum
time and serves different types of users by his/her abilities and efficiencies and satisfies their information
needs in a best possible manner.
Academic duties of the librarians
Librarians are directly or indirectly involved in teaching and learning activities as their nature of duties
include the following activities:
1. Provide efficient library services.
