than 2,200 students in grades 2-12 participated<br />
in education laboratories at the new<br />
<strong>Academy</strong>, and 638 teachers representing<br />
17,000 students opted for pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
development workshops. And, for<br />
older students from groups typically<br />
underrepresented in the sciences,<br />
our Careers in Science Intern<br />
Program provides training on the<br />
public floor and in research labs, helps<br />
them spread their excitement about<br />
science in local schools, and encourages<br />
them to pursue science in college and<br />
beyond.<br />
Digging, diving, and discovering, <strong>Academy</strong><br />
scientists have been busy this year. From<br />
the coral reefs <strong>of</strong> the Philippines to the<br />
Ethiopian desert, they have been<br />
traveling the globe on research<br />
expeditions to document the<br />
planet’s diverse flora and fauna.<br />
