NEWS FROM AUSTRALIA
German technologies energise All-Energy Australia 2010
From left: Tina Thoms and Anja Kegel
(both AHK) at All-Energy 2010
The All-Energy Conference and Exhibition,
Australia’s leading energy industry event,
returned to the Melbourne Convention &
Exhibition Centre on 6 and 7 October 2010.
As official supporters, Germany Trade & Invest
and the German-Australian Chamber of
Industry and Commerce (AHK) established the
German Clean Energy Portal at the exhibition
to showcase the compelling advantages of
Germany’s clean energy industry.
Above luxury,
beyond progressive.
The new Audi A8. The ultimate marque of prestige.
Above luxury lies the ultimate marque of prestige. Where an uncompromising
commitment to excellence transcends comfort to also deliver benchmark
efficiency, safety and performance technology. Where unmistakable Audi design
is complemented by relentless attention to detail. This is the art of progress –
the supreme synergy of elegant form and innovative function; the embodiment
of Vorsprung durch Technik, the very best of everything Audi. This is the flagship
of one of the world’s great luxury marques – the incomparable new Audi A8.
Experience the ultimate marque of prestige,
visit your nearest Audi Dealer or audi.com.au/A8 today.
All-Energy Australia 2010 doubled its
exhibitor and visitor numbers compared to
its debut last year. With 3000 visitors and
179 exhibitors from 14 countries, All-Energy
positioned itself as Australia’s biggest and
most significant energy event, exceeding all
expectations. The exhibitors represented all
renewable energy sectors while there was a
strong focus on solar energy.
The German Clean Energy Portal received an
overwhelming response as Australian industry
representatives were highly interested in Germany’s
renowned expertise and experience.
Phoenix Solar, PricewaterhouseCoopers and
Vitronic Machine Vision joined the AHK’s
stand as co-exhibitors. Altogether 19 German
companies were present at the exhibition.
The AHK also provided support in exhibition
preparations to a group of German companies
who were not yet represented in Australia.
The AHK is already preparing to bring more
German companies to the next All-Energy
event in 2011.
...towards a
sustainable
future.
Bilateral trade update
Despite averting a recession,
Australia still felt the impacts
of the global financial crisis as
merchandise trade depreciated.
However mineral exports to
Germany rose by 38 percent.
Currently Australia’s economy cashes in on
rising mineral prices such as the value of gold
which peaked at US$1300 for an ounce this
September. Economic anxiety and unpredictable
stock markets have fuelled a run for this
precious metal. These concerns also drive the
Australian dollar towards parity level with
the US dollar. Due to debt problems within
the Euro zone, the EUR/AUD exchange rate
reached an all-time low in the third quarter
of 2010 before stabilising at A$1.41. However,
German exporters of cars and specialised
machinery benefit from a weak Euro: More
affordable prices boost Australian demand
for high quality products “made in Germany“.
For the next year German-Australian trade is
expected to rise further, stirred by Germany’s
ascending demand for resources and a slowly
recovering global economy.
Interview with John Mutton, Managing Director,
Herringbone / van Laack Australia Pty Ltd
John Mutton, Managing Director,
Herringbone / van Laack Australia Pty Ltd
What inspired you to leap into the
fashion world and start Herringbone
in 1997?
At the time I was living in London and there
was a huge revival of the Jermyn Street shirt
(mostly double cuff). I came home to visit my
sister who was having her first child and I
walked the streets of Sydney and at the time
I could not find a double cuffed shirt to buy.
There was a huge hole in the market and that
was the reason to “get busy” and enter the
“fashion world”.
Having directed Herringbone for 13
years, what were the most memorable
highlights for you?
There have been many but the most
memorable was the first day we opened our
first store. Seeing the Herringbone name
above the door and the concept materialized
was a very proud moment. Of course watching
the shopping bags full leaving the store
with customers after that moment made it all
worthwhile.
How would you describe the merger
with the German company van Laack
in 2009?
Bringing two different cultures together is
challenging but we both have a common
interest and that is to make the best possible
clothes we can. This is a shared love and it is
easier to overcome cultural challenges when
you both have such a clearly shared mission,
this is in my opinion the wonderful thing
about business. I have to say also my perception
of the German approach to business
is to do things with consistency, in this regard
the merger has been a consistent approach to
doing things well, and if it can, better.
Have you dealt much with
Germany before that?
Not other than as a consumer
of German products and of
course as a tourist to your lovely
country.
Do you think the global
financial crisis will have
long-term effects on the
fashion industry and
change the way this
industry operates?
Yes, I think it will. It makes us all sharper. It
forces us all to rationalize cost structures,
rethink processes and reevaluate efficiency in
general.
What is the philosophy behind your
market strategy?
Our philosophy is to provide the market with
products that are distinguished by detail
starting with the shirt that is the cornerstone
of our brand. Thus it is really quite simple, in
each market we are in we want our customers
to wear the best shirt in the world and
this is very carefully made by us in our own
factories, completely vertical to the van Laack
group.
What are the main advantages of
the Australian fashion market?
It has to be our creativity. As a result of being
so far from the rest of the world and in a
market that is relatively small in numbers but
high in competition we are forced to think
and express ourselves in more creative ways.
INTERVIEW
What will be major trends for the
fashion industry in 2011?
I think the world consumer demands a more
relaxed way of dressing. I believe as the years
roll forward the need for wearing ties as an
example will gradually diminish. We will not
become any less sophisticated in fact the
opposite, the consumer will become more
sophisticated in a casual but serious sense.
In your opinion what were the best
and worst fashion trends in recent
years?
Not easy... In my opinion the best was the
resurgence of the tailored suiting look for
both men and women. The worst: low cut
jeans!
Which public figures convey a great
sense of style?
For the men in my opinion no one wears a
suit better than Kofi Annan and for the ladies
I do not like to highlight just one but I have
always been a fan of Elle MacPherson’s style.
Which celebrity would you love to
give a Herringbone makeover?
All are welcome!
Where do you see Herringbone in
ten years?
Hopefully penetrating many world markets
with great success.
NEWS FROM AUSTRALIA
Future Proofing Property Conference:
Greening the design, delivery and operation of properties
On 8 and 9 November 2010 the Future Proofing
Property Conference will take place at the
Brisbane Conference and Exhibition Centre.
German specialists of sustainable building
design and implementation, work space
specialists, urban planners and residential
property experts will mix with Australian
politicians, property experts, community housing
providers and investors to present cutting
edge insights for the property industry.
One of Germany’s most prominent architects,
Jürgen Mayer H., and HOCHTIEF’s CEO Dr
Herbert Luetkestratkoetter will join the panel
of expert speakers. The summit will attract the
property industry’s key stakeholders, including
property developers and investors, project, asset
and facility managers, property government
bodies as well as property consultants such as
architects and engineers.
Held under the patronage of the German
Ambassador to Australia Dr Michael Witter, the
event is organised by BCI Australia in
collaboration with the Green Building Council
of Australia, the German-Australian Chamber
of Industry and Commerce, the Goethe Institut
and HOCHTIEF.
The topics of the conference will deliver a
unique understanding of how to design, deliver
and operate green buildings. The conference
will start with an insight into current state of
play in both countries including expert presentations
regarding the impacts of emission
trading schemes on the property industry. In
German energy efficiency
trade delegation arriving
this November
A trade delegation from
Germany’s energy efficiency
industry will be visiting Sydney
on 4 and 5 November 2010 to
inspect Australia’s green building
market. The German-Australian Chamber of
Industry and Commerce will organise meetings
between the six German companies and potential
Australian business partners.
Insulation and energy efficiency have been
buzzwords in 2010. The Federal Government
withdrew its home insulation scheme after a
4
a more visionary session, Audi Future Award
Winner of 2010 Jürgen Mayer H. will present
his futuristic new Metropol Parasol project for
Sevilla. Dr Herbert Luetkestratkoetter will
illustrate corporate responsibility of one of
the world’s largest construction service
providers. On its second day, the conference
will present four different perspectives of
green building by developers, investors and
operators. The summit will also cover retrogreening
office buildings, affordable housing
and sustainable urban design, focusing on the
most pressing issues of the built environment.
The impact of the property industry on the
environment is dramatic. Beyond the obvious
use of land for buildings and infrastructure,
the built environment is globally responsible
for a staggering 40% of greenhouse gas
emissions and 50% of the solid waste going
to landfill. According to a report of the World
Resources Institute, the world total greenhouse
gas emissions in 2005 are estimated to
be at 44,153 MtCO² equivalents. Building
operations were accountable to 16.5% of
these emissions - 10.2% for residential and
6.3% for commercial buildings. Building
construction industries were accountable for
24.4% of these emissions.
Furthermore the property industry has
become an international business. Future
Proofing Property is a high-visibility initiative,
which intends to strengthen the exchange
between Australia and Germany - two
countries with great synergetic potential.
series of fires due to faulty installation and
lacking qualifications. However green building
technologies remain being one of the most
effective remedies to curb carbon emissions
by saving energy. Energy efficiency is the key
to energy conservation and prosperity as fuel
prices are set to skyrocket.
German companies are global market
leaders in energy efficiency. Their industry
represents decades of practical expertise as
well as innovative technologies and services.
With the ambitious plan of becoming the
world’s most energy efficient nation, the German
government rolled out supportive policies
and pledged to invest billions of Euros.
Germany’s Energy Efficiency Plan comprises
programs and initiatives to cut total energy
consumption by 9 percent between 2008 and
Germany is a country with a long standing
history of environmental and building
regulation and expertise in the fields
of energy efficiency, highly efficient work
spaces, urban planning principles and financing,
development and delivery of low cost
rental residential building stock. Australia is a
growing economy, with a great potential for
years to come. Salient strengths of Australia’s
property sector are world-class efficiency in
property development and management as
well as best-of-class marketing of sustainable
buildings. There is a great fit between
the two countries. Future Proofing Property
will capitalise on this fit by bridging the gap
and bringing together decision makers from
both countries in a high-profile one and a
half days forum. The conference is to be held
in Australia and Germany, 12 months apart,
with the inaugural event in Brisbane this
November.
The conference has been developed by wellknown
Swiss-born Sydney-based architect
Nicolas Perren in close collaboration with the
German Consul General Dr. Hans-Guenter
Gnodtke, Dr. Matthias Krups, German-born
industry specialist and CEO of Australia’s
leading construction information service BCI
and Karl Reinitzhuber, Director of HOCHTIEF
and Alternate Director at Leighton Holdings
Limited. Future Proofing Property will establish
a new perspective to the green building
industry and highlight new possibilities for
a win-win situation for all involved parties,
particularly the environment. For further information
about program and speakers please
visit www.futureproofingproperty.org.
2016. Additionally the German government’s
Integrated Energy and Climate Program is
expected to drastically cut emissions.
Australian businesses can explore collaboration
opportunities with German green building
companies in individual meetings. The six
German companies specialise in state-of-theart
door systems, heat exchangers, building
automation systems, lighting solutions and
other energy saving technologies. They are
interested in discussing potential partnerships
with local distributors, buyers, suppliers and
architects. Visit www.germany.org.au for more
Trade barriers decelerate
foreign trade dynamics
According to an analysis by the Association of
German Chambers of Industry and Commerce
(DIHK), growing foreclosure and new barriers
in global markets hampered foreign trade for
exporters last year.
80 German Chambers of Industry and
Commerce interviewed German exporters to
measure the impact of the global financial
crisis on foreign trade while identifying the
challenges of bilateral trade.
The range of challenges suggests that
tensions related to trade are unlikely to dissolve
in near future, despite general economic
recovery, said DIHK President Hans Heinrich
Driftmann.
Based on the responses received, tight
security and complex certification standards
posed serious problems with Germany’s most
important non-EU trade partners. The United
States imposed tough security checks in
accordance with anti-terror laws. Sanctions
also prohibit German companies to export
products containing US-made components to
countries such as Cuba and Iran. Generally,
European standards are not accepted in China
and Russia where they have to be verified by
local certification authorities. Certification
processes are often long and cost-intensive.
Additionally changing and unpredictable
import regulations impede delivery deadlines.
Global customs clearance was also getting
increasingly complicated.
However, Mr Driftmann also pointed out
that Germany’s very own export regulations
further complicate two-way trade. German
companies often have to wait longer for an
export license than their foreign competitors
due to the adoption of an electronic customs
clearance system for exports, posing a serious
disadvantage.
Considering that a re-entry into foreign
markets involves huge costs, most of the
German companies did not entirely withdraw
WHAT IF LOGISTICS
SUCCESS OF
MY BUSINESS?
from these markets, despite difficulties. In
many cases, local agents have served as representatives
of German companies in international
markets. The recession forced German
enterprises to analyse their expenses and
re-align their foreign business. These adjustments
are now set to increase the profitability
of their exports.
The DIHK also urges the German government
to make its foreign trade legislation clearer
and more efficient. Particularly the issue of
harmonised export licenses within the European
Union would result in fairer and equally
competitive conditions for German businesses.
by Tina Vissem (AHK) and an invigorating
breakfast, the guests were briefed on the “art
of strategic translation”. Vancore Group’s
principal Ganesh Kashyap delivered a captivating
presentation in which he outlined the
importance of emotionally implementing a
strategy at an operational level. Mr Kashyap
emphasised that this process would deliver
success. Furthermore he pointed out the
importance of starting with a good practice
strategy process and to answer the right
questions at the right level. Other key elements
were a decisive and unified leadership
as well as cross-functional and cross-hierarchical
involvement. Moreover he identified
apathy as the silent killer of strategic change.
The thought-provoking presentation sparked a
vivid discussion among the guests. Extensive
networking concluded the seminar resulting in
an excellent work day start for our members.
H.E. David Daly (Head of Delegation of the
European Union to Australia)
Sydney’s European Chambers invited their
members to a lavish luncheon at the renowned
Doltone House on 26 August 2010.
The German-Australian Chamber’s Vice President
Paul Koenig welcomed the 140 guests.
The Head of Delegation of the European
Union to Australia His Excellency David Daly
shared his insights on Australia’s global trade
relations. He revealed that Australia’s previous
focus on Asia is now shifting towards Europe.
According to recent figures by the Australian
Bureau of Statistics, the EU is one of Australia’s
major export destinations. After China
and Japan, the EU represents Australia’s most
important export markets worth A$26 bn.
Austrade’s Chief Economist Tim Harcourt
also shared his vast experiences. Exclaiming
that Australia should embrace an economic
“Eurovision” instead of “Europhobia”, the
famous globetrotter delivered an exceptional
introduction to global economics. He focused
on the European debt crisis and critically
examined Australia’s tight trade relations with
the US and China.
After these insightful presentations our
expert speakers attended the audience’s
pressing questions. The event also attracted
media coverage by ABC News. Two lucky door
prize winners also won signed copies of Mr
Harcourt’s book The Airport Economist. We
would like to thank all involved chambers for
an excellent cooperation, making this event a
$100 million worth of luxury classic, new and
concept cars and motorcycles will converge
on Manly’s St Patrick’s Estate as part of
the first Concours d’Elegance Australia on
Sunday 10th October, 2010 (10-10-10), commencing
at 10am till 5pm.
For the first time Concours d’Elegance
Australia will host the internationally
acclaimed event, where cars and motor-cycles
will be vying for the ultimate status of “Best
of Show”. Concours d’Elegance Australia is as
much about style, fashion and elegance as it
is a celebration of the enjoyment of amazing
and exotic automobiles and motorcycles.
There are a number of classes including
anniversary marques; 75 years of Jaguar and
100 years of Alfa Romeo. Finalists are selected
by a highly skilled and experienced panel of
judges on the day including former racing
driver and five times Le Mans winner, Derek
Bell, MBE.
Chairman of Concours d’Elegance Australia
and car enthusiast, Sam Movizio introduced
the idea of Concours d’Elegance Australia
back in 2008. An avid fan and attendee of
Concours such as Pebble Beach, Quail and
Goodwood, he believes that this prestigious
event can really gain momentum in Australia.
“We’re behind the rest of the world in this
regard and it’s time we had a top-quality
Australian event”, he says.
To complement Australia’s finest collection
of automobiles and keep in the spirit of
fashionable cars, ladies can also participate in
‘Fashions on the Field’ with prizes to be won
throughout the day for the best dressed lady
and couple.
Since its launch on 26th October 2009,
Movizio and his team have been striving hard
to bring this elegant automotive competition
to fruition. With the venue set and the
wheels firmly in motion, Concours d’Elegance
Australia is on track to set a high benchmark
for future Concours events.
Concours d’Elegance Pty Ltd is governed by an
Executive Committee and specialist
committees responsible for the preparation
and the staging of this inaugural event. They
are collectors in their own rights and
members of some of the country’s most
important prestige car clubs.
BUSINESS PARTNER SOUGHT
German Manufacturer of Valves
Adams Armaturen GmbH was established
in 1960, when founder Karl Adams
had invented a butterfly valve with
three functions in one valve: isolation,
throttling and check - the “Combination
Control Valve”.
With production facilities in Herne
(Headquarter), worldwide subsidiary
companies and sales agencies, today
the company is a leading manufacturer
of valves.
The production range covers the complete
spectrum of valve applications up
to the most advanced. Butterfly valves
are available in nominal diameters between
DN 80/3” up to 4000/160” (mm/
inch) for temperatures between -196°C
to 950°C and operating pressures of up
to 400 bar.
The focus in Australia is to find a potential
business partner who is an agent
or distributor within the valve industry
and ideally has experience and technical
knowledge regarding valves, is willing
to actively market the products, offers
support to clients and partners and is
able to provide After Sales Service in
Australia.
Adams-Service-Germany will support
and train the potential agent / distributor.
For further information please
Chamber on 02 – 8296 0434 or via
