04 DON’T MISS / SUNSHINE ON LEITH DON’T MISS / SUNSHINE ON LEITH 05
One of the most popular shows in Eden
Court’s recent history returns for a more
than welcome second visit to its highland
home. Sunshine on Leith is the hilarious,
compelling tale of Davy and Ally – two
childhood friends returning home to
Edinburgh after their tour of duty
in Afghanistan.
It soon becomes clear that the Edinburgh
they left behind has changed in their time
away. The trials and tribulations of
families, relationships and life in sunny
Leith are far from plain sailing – with
girlfriends, mothers and job hunting -
the ups and downs of life in ‘civvy street’
present their own unique challenges.
Sunshine on Leith is written by Stephen
Greenhorn (creator of River City and
Passing Places) and is a true Scottish
stage gem which remains unsurpassed in
its style, sparkle and sensitivity.
This truly exceptional love story is more than
just a musical; it’s a timeless tale of the life
and times of a modern Scottish family.
Sunshine on Leith is a dazzling display of
supreme live music, comedy, dance and
hard-hitting drama which seamlessly
blends the very best Proclaimers’ hits and
some of their less well known creations into
the narrative of this unforgettable show.
Sunshine On Leith all but sold out last time
it came to the Highlands – don’t miss this
special return visit… We can’t promise to
bring it back a third time!
A glorious celebration
of romance in
ordinary lives
VANISHING POINT AND NAPOLI TEATRO FESTIVAL ITALIA PRESENTS
INTERIORS
FRI 08 & SAT 09 OCT | 20.00
ONETOUCH THEATRE
Created by VANISHING POINT
Conceived and directed by MATTHEW LENTON
Inspired by the play Interior by MAURICE MAETERLINCK
Winter.
Behind a window, in a cosy room,
a group of friends gather for a meal.
The lamps are on, everyone is happy.
Talk begins and stories unfold
around the table, stories about the
living and the dead, about missing
necklaces and what happens when
people get hungry.
Secrets emerge. Lies are exposed.
Outside someone is watching.
This production is inspired by Nobel
Prize winner Maurice Maeterlinck’s
astonishing play, Interior. Utterly
hypnotic, deeply mysterious and
powerfully intense, Interiors is
about sounds, silence, the path
of fate and the darkness outside
the window.
Interiors is a show like you have
never seen before. The audience are
mere observers, the action takes
place silently behind the window, and
we as audience hear only the
narrator.
Interiors is sure to be one of the
most talked about shows of 2010 –
make sure you’re there.
EMPIRE THEATRE
This autumn, Scottish Ballet presents a
programme of dance influenced by
geometry, neo-classical chic and
contemporary classical music.
From revered Royal Ballet choreographer
Frederick Ashton comes Scènes de
Ballet. This sophisticated work combines
intricate pointe, couture-inspired tutus
and Stravinsky’s gorgeous score with a
hint of 1940s Broadway glamour.
At the centre of the programme is a piece
by San Francisco Ballet choreographer
Val Caniparoli. Set to two chamber
scores by Uzbekistani composer Elena
Kats Chernin, this new work showcases
Caniparoli’s distinctive dramatic yet
sensual choreographic style.
The hugely successful Fearful
Symmetries was created by Ashley Page
for the Royal Ballet in 1994 and received
both a Time Out and an Olivier Award.
Set to John Adams’ dynamic score, this
vibrant piece takes inspiration from the
painters of the New York abstract
expressionist movement, evoking
contrasting images of bustling American
cities and the wide open spaces of the
mid-west.
SCOTTISH OPERA
CARMEN
FRI 01 & SAT 02 OCT | 19.30
ONETOUCH THEATRE
BEAUTIFUL GYPSIES, obsession, bullfighters and
some of the liveliest rhythms in opera… it can only be
Carmen. This new production is set in 1960s Spain, a
country firmly entrenched in General Franco’s rightwing
regime. Women are oppressed, the gypsies
ghettoised, the country is riddled with poverty, and
black-market smuggling is rife.
The stakes are high for Carmen. An outspoken gypsy
with a beautiful face and a fiery temper, she sets her
sights on the soldier Don José. His desire leads him
to deny his friends and position and he is soon living a
life outside the law. As his relationship with Carmen
disintegrates and she leaves him for another, he sets
out to prove his love, but Carmen has seen the future
in her tarot cards and it isn’t a happy one.
Bizet’s boldly seductive opera has been one of the
world’s favourites for over a century. From the sultry
‘Habanera’ to the naively passionate ‘Flower Song’
and the rousing ‘Toreador’s Song’, Bizet’s everpopular
music brings out the earthy vitality of his
characters. Ashley Dean, director of 2009’s Opera
Alan Bissett is one of Scotland’s most exciting young writers. Here he
presents a series of stories from Falkirk’s hardest woman, Moira
Bell. Whether defending her ‘snookelums pookelums’ from the local
rottweiler, attempting to seduce a teacher in the school where she
works as a cleaner, or belting out Diana Ross for the Scotia karaoke
night, Moira is hilarious and heart-warming company.
Everybody knows a Moira – it may be your wife, sister or mum.
What’s for certain is that Alan Bissett brings this ubiquitous Scottish
character to life in a way that will have you laughing yourself silly!
THE CHOOKY BRAE
FRI 17 & SAT 18 SEP | 19.30
ONETOUCH THEATRE
It’s Christmas day in Stewarton and Irene Gordon’s
struggling to get in the festive spirit. Her 18-year-old
daughter Norma’s just had a baby; her ex-husband
Gordon’s just had a stroke and her eldest, Barry is having a
break down.
Even the Dr Who Christmas special is disappointing. If this
was a wonderful life she would receive some angelic
intervention - instead she gets Rab McGuire and an escaped
chicken that won’t be stuffed.
Borderline Theatre Company make a roaring Highland
return with DC Jackson’s The Chooky Brae - the follow up to
0-3
the award winning 2008 production The Wall and 2009’s The
Ducky. The Chooky Brae is a new comedy set in the small
3-6
Ayrshire town of Stewarton.
DC Jackson’s latest creation is a poignant and funny 2+
comedy about love, duty, free-range fowl and realising that
what you’ve got isn’t necessarily what you want. DC Jackson 4+
is one of Scotland’s most exciting young playwrights. He is
currently under commission to the Royal Court Theatre, 5+
London, the National Theatre of Scotland, The Comedy Unit
and BBC Radio Scotland.
A new play by PATRICK PRIOR
Performed by PAT ABERNETHY & DAVE MARSDEN
Directed by JIM DUNK
On Sunday April 14th 1912, the Titanic, the greatest ship in
the world, slipped below the frigid waters of the Atlantic.
J. Bruce Ismay, Managing Director of the White Star Line,
stepped into a lifeboat and sailed away from the stricken
ship, sailed away from his passengers, sailed away from the
cries and screams and tears.
Women and children first?
The Man Who Left The Titanic evokes that terrible voyage
and asks whether Bruce Ismay did just what any of us would
have done in the same circumstances? Should his actions
that night consign his name to infamy?
Was he a coward or merely human?
''She was beautiful... she was
unsinkable... she was doomed.''

ONETOUCH THEATRE
Written by IAIN HEGGIE
Directed by LIZ CARRUTHERS
Starring BENNY YOUNG
Following its premier at Glasgow’s Oran Mor,
Iain Heggie’s satirical insight into the moral
dubiety of the merchant class in late-18th
century Glasgow takes to the road!
In the Merchant City, Glasgow is booming -
the American war is looming. Much of the
city’s wealth is dependent on American
tobacco. Will the great port survive?
This pressing question is not one addressed
by Enoch Dalmellington, resident of Virginia
St.
He is more concerned about marrying off his
dreich pious humourless daughter Euphemia,
being able to afford his pew at the Tron Kirk
and what to do about Mistress Zapata’s
scurrilous predictions about Glasgow in 2010.
FIELDCRAFT SURVIVAL
FRI 29 OCT | 19.30
EMPIRE THEATRE
Ray Mears is one of the world's leading authorities on
fieldcraft and survival techniques. His skills have been
acquired while working in some of the world's
remotest and harshest environments. Ray combines
30 years of experience into a compelling story of
wilderness wildlife survival skills for the whole family
(pretty useful during a Highland winter!)
In addition to being a renowned authority on the
subject of Bushcraft and Survival, Ray has also
become a household name through his television
series: Tracks, World of Survival, The Essential Guide
to Rocks, Extreme Survival, Trips Money Can't Buy
with Ewan McGregor, The Real Heroes of Telemark,
Bushcraft Survival, Wild Food and now Survival with
Ray Mears.
Ray’s TV programmes have touched the hearts of
survival fans from small children to grandparents. His
down to earth approach, obvious love for his subject
and the empathy and respect he shows for indigenous
peoples and their cultures means any evening in his
company is likely to be unforgettable.
OFF THE WALL
MON 15 NOV | 19.30
ONETOUCH THEATRE
The UK’s only “stand-up
mountaineer” Andy
Kirkpatrick is a natural
performer with talents to rival
top comedians. His inimitable
style and his love for all things
extreme make for a unique
0-3
evening of entertainment, with stunning images and
footage accompanying his tales of terror from the steep. 3-6
In his past shows Andy searched for an answer to his
perpetual quest for adventure. ‘Off The Wall’ is his third2+
attempt to answer the reason why he climbs, as he charts
the last two years of his life with a collection of stories, 4+
including climbing the mighty El Capitan in Yosemite with
injured serviceman Major Phil Packer, a dramatic rescue 5+
from the North Face of the Eiger, a near drowning at Cape
6+
Wrath and a trip to Number 10.
Anybody who saw Andy last time he was at Eden Court
7+
won’t want to miss this return visit! With brand new tales
of danger and extremity – your feet will be scrabbling for8+
WITH LIVE MUSIC BY
THE SOUTHWELL COLLECTIVE
THU 09 SEP | 20.00
PLAYHOUSE CINEMA
SILENT FILMS WITH LIVE MUSIC ACCOMPANIMENT
This is a rare chance to see Jean Epstein's 1928
6+
masterpiece version of Edgar Alan Poe’s classic tale
– The Fall of the House of Usher. At once full of
suspense and visually stunning, coupled with the 7+
new score – cinema fans are in for a pure treat. The
new score is written and performed by The Southwell
8+
Collective using music inspired by quotes found in
Poe's original story.
8-12
Ghosts Before Breakfast, by Hans Richter, is a short
film in which ordinary objects behave in unusual,
unexpected ways. The new score, composed by
Michael McCartney for The Southwell Collective,
aspires to achieve the same effect, featuring music
which sounds somewhat familiar, yet subtly
unpredictable.
FILM FESTIVAL
WED 03 – SUN 07 NOV 2010
THE ROBERTSON SCREENS
ON SCREEN 29
Last year’s Inverness Film Festival was
packed with celluloid masterpieces – As
well as screening 12 Scottish premieres
and showcasing the best new British and
international films and documentaries, the
Inverness Film Festival also celebrated both
Scottish and Highland filmmaking, and
offered budding film makers the chance to brush up on
their skills with masterclasses and workshops.
At the time of writing, details of the programme for this
year’s Inverness Film Festival remain firmly under wraps!
One thing that we can share is that we will be screening
the Scottish Premiere of The Girl Who Kicked The
Hornet’s Nest - the brilliant final part in Stieg Larsson’s
Millenium trilogy.
Each year’s Festival ends up being bigger, better and
more popular than the last – expect the unexpected and
look out for full details online soon.
SUN 31 OCT | 20.00
ONETOUCH THEATRE
John Hegley is a ‘British Institution’ – his irreverent style is
unique, unmatchable, unsurpassed.
In ‘The Adventures of Monsieur Robinet’ he’ll tell tales
about a Frenchman with some unusual [but clean] habits,
which include burying his dog’s kennel and his own
luggage. The stories are presented alongside other new
works, which include an address to aliens on the subject
of transport, a poem about a non-talking parrot and some
animal impersonations with the aid of a handkerchief.
Suitable for most people over seven.
The audience are invited to sing along.
But not to dance. Much.
Hegley is known as a poet and singer with a common and
comedic touch, hence the quotation from The Observer,
Hailed as “a superb period instrument band” by the New
York Times, the Academy of Ancient Music is a household
name renowned worldwide for its energized, passionate
performances of baroque and classical music. It was
founded by Christopher Hogwood in 1973 and specialises
in performing on instruments and in styles dating from
the time when the music was composed.
JS Bach’s cantatas display an extraordinarily broad
musical palette and, in the words of AAM Music Director
Richard Egarr, represent ‘the true kernel of his
compositional life’. For this vibrant performance,
the AAM is joined by one of Britain’s finest young singers,
Elizabeth Watts, for a programme combining two of
Bach’s cantatas with his Virtuosic D Minor Harpsichord
Concerto and the playful Concerto in C Minor for
SCOTTISH NATIONAL
JAZZ ORCHESTRA
SAT 18 SEP | 20.00
EMPIRE THEATRE
Gershwin's music has always been
played by jazz musicians, yet his most
famous work has remained in the
classical music repertoire, and is a
favourite of classical pianists and
Orchestras.
What would it sound like played by a Jazz
Orchestra and pianist? Tommy Smith has
arranged the music, and Brian Kellock,
classically trained and an aficionado of
the piece, will play an extended 45
minute version of "Rhapsody In Blue.
Under Tommy Smith's remarkable
leadership, the SNJO has evolved into a
big band of undeniably international
class, packed with a raft of terrific
soloists reflective of a richly talented
Scottish jazz scene - Ryan Quigley, Paul
Towndrow and Martin Kershaw are well
to the fore. Tonight's concert is a must
for jazz and big band fans alike.
Wakeman’s popular appeal has
remained constant and transcends
An Evening With Rick Wakeman came
about by accident. One evening when
his gear didn’t arrive for a show, Rick
offered the audience the choice of their
money back or an evening with Rick
performing on the piano and telling
funny anecdotes. Only three people
exchange musical ideas in a public
concert setting. Tour founder Brian
Gore invites a new cast of guitar
presenting a special evening of solos,
virtuosity and diversity within the world
took up the offer of their money back,
THE HISTORY OF THE BIG BANDS
WED 20 OCT | 19.30
EMPIRE THEATRE
Starring Darius Campbell
The History of the Big Bands sees the
incomparable Darius transport the
audience on a magical musical journey
revisiting some of Swing’s very best
songs. All the famous tunes from the
world’s greatest big band leaders are
here, music from Harry James, Benny
Goodman, Tommy Dorsey and more.
The History of the Big Bands features
a magnificent 16 piece big band and a
series of first class soloists who cover
the famous solos as played by the
original bandleaders. The audience is
led on a musical ride from one band
leader to another by the talented,
charismatic and hugely
successful Darius.
Following in the footsteps of the great
crooners such as Bing Crosby, Frank
Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin
and Andy Williams, Darius takes on
his most challenging role yet.
Crooning is a style that has its roots in
the Bel Canto of Italian opera, but with
the emphasis on subtle vocal nuances
and phrasing found in jazz. Darius
could be made for the part.
The History of the Big Bands promises
an outstanding evening of high
energy, virtuoso musicianship and
wonderful songs. A fantastic show
it’s sure to appeal to every big band
fan and more.
Dave and Maggie are two stalwarts of the British R&B scene. They have
great voices, great reputations and a loyal Highland fan base. They’ll
DEATH OF A SALESMAN
TUE 07 – SAT 12 MAR 2011
TUE 07 – FRI 11 MAR | 19.30
SAT 12 MAR | 14.00 & 19.30
EMPIRE THEATRE
Perth Theatre presents
Death of a Salesman
by Arthur Miller
Directed by Ian Grieve
'Willy Loman never made a lot of money. His name was never
in the paper. He's not the finest character that ever lived. But
he's a human being, and a terrible thing is happening to him.
So attention must be paid.'
34 years ago travelling salesman Willy Loman climbed into
his car to chase the American dream: running on hope and
'riding on a smile and a shoeshine' into the land of
opportunity.
This is the journey of his life, told in one day. Willy, now 63,
returns home for the last time to his family, with his
memories, his daydreams and his terrible fear that
somewhere along the road he might have taken a wrong turn.
Death of a Salesman is arguably Arthur Miller’s greatest
creation. The ‘first great American tragedy’ helped Miller gain
the reputation as someone who understood the essence of
the American nation. Death of a Salesman not only addresses
the painful conflicts within a family but considers the cost of
blind faith in the American Dream. It won the Pulitzer Prize in
1945 and is as hard-hitting 66 years later as it was then.
