Optical technologies have a long tradition
in Hanover, given an official footing as
long ago as 1986 with the foundation of the
Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. Over the past
20 years, unique qualifications have been established,
especially in laser-, thin-film, and
space technologies, which are now amongst
the essential foundations of QUEST.
A cornerstone of topical research
in QUEST is the research area “Enabling
Technologies”, where the technological
foundation for the other three research areas
is itself the subject of investigation. In the
group “Ultrahigh Quality Optical Layers and
Characterisation” new optical materials and
thin film processes for laser components
are developed. The Group “Nanophotonics”
produces 2D and 3D micro- and nanostructures
and analyzes their optical properties.
Special integrated optical fiber components
are produced and characterised with high
precision in the group “Fiber Optics”. In the
junior research group “3 rd
High-Performance Cavities
Generation Gravitational
Wave Detector Laser
Fibre Optics
Source “ new concepts for high power lasers
for the observation of gravitational waves
are explored. The research group “Sub-Hz
Laser and High-Performance Cavities” investigates
ultra narrow bandwidth lasers for
precision metrology while the group “Mode
Locked Laser / Mode Combs “ is working on
mode-locked comb generators. Finally, in
“Photonic Devices for Space Applications”
space technologies are pursued.
Substantial strategic investments together
with a new professorship for applied
physics in QUEST strengthen the Hanover
research location. Within this research area,
combined with the Task Group “Advanced
Light Sources and Optical Materials”, QUEST
advances the collaboration network between
the Leibniz Universität Hannover,
the Max-Planck-Institute for Gravitational
Physics (Albert-Einstein-Institut), the Laser
Zentrum Hannover e.V., and the Physikalisch-
Technische Bundesanstalt in Brunswick. The
resulting local competence center allows for
ongoing global technology leadership.

Arbeiten in QUEST ganz wesentliche Eckpfeiler darstellen.
Im Forschungsbereich „Enabling Technologies“ werden
wichtige Schlüsseltechnologien erforscht, die eine Basis für
die drei übrigen QUEST-Forschungsbereiche bilden. So
Optical components are key elements
in modern optics and laser technology. In
analogy to the resistors, capacitors or many
other parts controlling the electron current
in electronic circuits, they are needed to manipulate
and control light in photonic circuits.
For instance, no laser system could be
operated without adapted mirrors forming
a resonance cavity to store the light in the
laser material until sufficient amplification is
attained. For this task, everyday shaving mirrors
with a typical reflectance of around 80
percent would never be sufficient, because
after every bounce 20 percent of the light
would be lost allowing for only few round
trips in the cavity. Typically, several hundred
round trips have to be achieved for
the photons to keep the system above the
laser threshold. As a consequence, mirror reflectance
values above 99 percent are often
required. Such high values and many other
optical functions can be achieved by optical
interference coatings, which are formed by
a stack of single transparent layers with different
refractive indices. The new laser concepts
and high precision measurement systems
developed in QUEST impose extreme
demands on the quality of interference
coatings. The research group on ultrahigh
quality optical layers is dedicated to this new
generation of optical coatings. One of the
major targets is the development of coatings
with extremely high reflectivity above
99.9999 percent enabling several million
round trips in a laser cavity. As a fundamental
coating process, ion beam sputtering is
modified and optimized to achieve optical
losses in the sub ppm-range.

kein Lasersystem ohne angepasste Spiegel betrieben
verschiedenen Brechwerten bestehen.
The interferometric detection of gravitational
waves sets an exceptionally high requirements
for the laser source used. Besides
diffraction limited beam quality and the
single-frequency emission, the extremely
high output power needed for 3 rd generation
gravitational wave detectors is the
major challenge. Depending on the mirror
substrates used in the interferometers, either
up to 1 kW of output power at a wavelength
of 1064 nm or 100-200 W at a wavelength
of 1.55 µm wavelength is needed. For the
realization of such laser sources, different
concepts are evaluated with respect to their
suitability for low noise amplification of single-frequency
radiation. In the 1.55 µm range,
pure fiber based systems utilizing both Er-
doped as well as Er/Yb-co-doped fibers are
examined. At 1064 nm wavelength, hybrid
fiber-solid state amplifiers using both Ybdoped
fibers and Nd-doped laser crystals are
realized. Due to the high intensity in the fiber
core and the long interaction length, fiber
based systems enable very high efficiency
even in the low power range. However, the
same properties can be limiting in the high
power range as they favor non-linear scattering
processes like the stimulated Brillouin
scattering which increases the frequency
and intensity noise. Thus, these amplifiers
are complemented by solid-state amplifiers
which need high input power for an
efficient power extraction due to their large
mode field areas.

Die interferometrische Gravitationswellendetektion
(GWD) stellt extrem hohe Anforderungen an die verwendete
Laserquelle.
For the development of stable and
passive fiber components is essential.
In particular, these include high efficiency
pump combiners for Ytterbium-based lasers
emitting in the spectral region around
1 µm. For the realisation of such components
different approaches have been designed
and implemented. First, pump combiners
double clad PCFs are also used. All studies
have been supported by substantial numerical
of all-fiber ultrafast laser systems, have
been developed. All of these components
entsprechender passiver Faserkomponenten zwingend
hoher Effizienz für Ytterbium-basierte Laser mit Emissionen
Komponenten wurden verschiedene Lösungsansätze
The research project deals with the development
of ultra-stable laser systems for
applications in ultra-high resolution spectroscopy
as well as metrology. For instance,
the short-term stability of an optical clock is
nowadays limited by the frequency instability
of the laser probing the optical atomic
transition, the “pendulum” of the atomic
clock. To attain superior frequency stability
the frequency of the laser is typically stabilized
to a narrow resonance line of an optical
cavity. The frequency instability of the laser is
then determined by the stability of the resonator
length itself.
Changes in the cavity length might
arise from seismic or acoustic noise as well
as temperature fluctuations. Currently the
frequency stability of the best lasers is lim-
ited by thermal length fluctuations caused
by the Brownian motion of the molecules in
the resonator material. This so-called thermal
noise can be suppressed by using crystalline
structures of high mechanical quality
instead of amorphous glass as a cavity
material. To this end the research project
is currently investigating mono-crystalline
silicon as resonator material. At a temperature
of -150 °Celsius the material should
be insensitive against thermal length fluctuations.
Therefore a vibration-free cooling
mechanism is currently being developed.
Additionally, the research project is investigating
novel highly-reflective materials to
reduce the thermal noise arising from the
mirror coatings of the optical resonator.

Resonators stabilisiert. Die Frequenzstabilität des an den
Resonator angekoppelten Lasers wird durch die Stabilität
der Resonatorlänge bestimmt. Längenänderungen können
durch seismische und akustische Schwingungen sowie Temperaturschwankungen
verursacht werden. Gegenwärtig ist
Comb generators are well established
and commercially available in the near infrared
wavelength region; some experiments,
for example those which QUEST Research
Area A “Quantum Engineering” would undertake,
require frequency combs in the
more distant spectral ranges, especially in
the UV. Therefore, new combs based on
novel mode-locked lasers and on parametric
oscillators are now the subject of research.
Furthermore, investigation and application
of transfer concepts for existing comb generators
into new spectral ranges, for example
by plasmon enhanced nonlinear conversion,
are currently under investigation and
show great promise.
below 100 nm in a manner that is both fast
and flexible. The structured materials show
up a variety of new and unexpected optical
