INTRODUCTION
When highlighting the Baix Ebre’s mount ainous features, special attention is often paid to a single
distinctive characteristic which sets it apart from other r egions’ landscapes: the 991.6 km2 that include
the distr icts of fourteen municipalities and one E MD (decentralised municipal entity) . It also brings
together the Els P orts Natural Park with the highest summit in Tarragona, Car o mountain (1,447m)
and the Ebre Delta Natural Park.
On the one hand, the region has wide- ranging landscapes with its coast, beac hes, mountain and
delta plain. On the other, there is the his tor ical significance of this territory as wel l as of the Ebr e
River, an essential element that complements the area’s natur al and human legacy. All this together
makes a visit to the Baix E bre region a most worthwhile trip.
ELS PORT S
NATURAL PARK
Be tween th e Catalan Mediterranean and
Iberian syst ems, Els P orts Natur al Park
has a ve ry comple x and tr ansition al
landscap e. Th e E ls P ort s ar ea brings
together the diversity and uniquen ess o f
the souther n Catalonia lands located in the
extreme southern Me diter ranean syste m.
It has been declared a Natio nal Hu ntin g
Rese rve.
The Els Ports fauna is especially interesting
due t o the ende mic animals that per tain
specifically to Catalonia, such as the vultur e
and boot ed eagle. A king of the animals,
the Spanish Ibex (cabra hispànica) is on e
of the most impor tant types of this species
with in Catalonia.
Many species of flora are also represented
here: heart of palm, ho lm oak, black pine,
red pin e, bearberry, and beech wood (in
Vallcanera). This is one of the most valuable
natur al aspects of E ls Ports, since it is
one of Europe’s southernmo st lo cations.
The city of Tortosa also boasts examples of
W e would like to high lig ht the location
Baix Eb re GRE EN ROUT E
The Green Routes are an ideal w ay to promote a new cu lture amongst the comm unity: a cultu r e that thrives on leisur e, sport, the fresh
outdoors and non-motorised transport. S ince their use is oriented towards the entire public, the Routes encourage the sports of bicycling,
hiking and horseback riding. They also play a key educational role, especially for youth, as their biggest benefit is guaranteed accessibility
for everyone, with no age or physical ability r estrictions.
With a length of 23 km, the Baix Ebre Green Route starts in the town of Tortosa, runs along the Ebre River and goes thr ough the municipalities
of Roquetes, E MD de Jesús, Aldover, Xer ta and Benifallet, where it meets the Terra Alta (Pinell de Brai, P rat de Comte, Bot, Horta de
St. Joan, Ar nés ) tram. Its elevation difference is 45.6 m and the level of dif ficulty is low , making it easy to acc ess on foot, horseback or
bicycle. It is also disability accessible. We suggest wearing good shoes and bringing a water bottle, spare tyr e and torch. The Aldover, Xerta,
Bot and Fontcalda municipalities have drinking water points.
