From the office of
Mrs. Lisa Olson
District Administrator
Buy one, get one free. 40% off. Free shipping. Bonus cash back. Free ham
with any purchase. With the recent Black Friday and CyberMonday events
consuming print, airwaves, and webspace, I wondered how it would play out if
we were to advertise HUHS in a similar manner. Would people line up at our
doors days in advance in anticipation of the great deals? Would people create
lists of items they desired? Would people gather around after their Thanksgiving
meals planning an itinerary of matching offers with desires? Would people brag
about the great deals they received afterwards?
Hartford Union High School recently hosted the second annual HUHS
Showcase on November 21. It would have been difficult to walk around
the event and not feel an extreme sense of pride for having the privilege of
being part of such a great learning organization—the active engagement and
enthusiasm of our students in attendance, the inviting activities highlighted,
and the passion of our teachers displayed through sharing their expertise. The
comments from attendees were nothing less than excellent. Potential students
and parents walked away with the belief that HUHS has endless possibilities,
engaged learning, and caring teachers. Current parents and community
members shared my sense of pride and community that was magnified with
the level of energy and excitement.
It is my belief, that if all our parents, students, and community members were
to have attended the HUHS Showcase, we would have people lining up at our
doors, planning itineraries of how to take advantage of our great offers, and
bragging about our best deals. For those shopping around for a school district
or wanting to know if their school district is a value, HUHS boasts a great
selection of courses, a wide range of learning options, and a large variety of
co-curriculars. - The only thing we don’t offer is a free ham.

Megan Beine, Sarah Larson and Jordan Peschek have been chosen by HUHS to have their scholarship applications
submitted to CESA #6. Once at CESA #6, a regional selection committee will then review all applications received
by CESA #6 and advance their regional nominees to the State Selection Committee. From there, the committee
will score all CESA applications and determine the students who will receive a Herb Kohl Excellence Scholarship.
Applications were evaluated on leadership, citizenship, school/community involvement, and academic
achievement. In addition, the application was evaluated on the student’s ability to clearly articulate goals in each
of four areas: future educational goals, personal life goals, community/society service goals, and career goals.
Thanks to the continuing generosity of the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation, 100 graduating seniors will
receive $1,000 grants in the 2012 Kohl Excellence Scholarship program. This annual program is an opportunity to
recognize excellence in learning. The local selection committee felt Megan, Sarah and Jordan are an outstanding
representation of a Herb Kohl Excellence Scholarship recipient!! We wish the young ladies the best as they
advance on to regional selections!!
Attendance Office
Student Absences
When it is necessary for a student of any age to be
absent, s/he must account for her or his absence in one
of the two manners listed:
• They may have their parent/guardian call
the Attendance Office. Parents/guardians
are expected to call the day of the absence or
within one day. Parents/guardians can leave a
message by calling and following the prompts.
Attendance Office: 262.673.8945 6:30 am- 4 pm
• The student may bring a note from the parent/
guardian to the Attendance Office before going
to his or her first class upon return to school.
Notes must contain the date(s) of absence,
reason for absence, and the signature of a parent/
guardian. It is suggested notes be written in ink.
Email notifications are also accepted by emailing:
attendanceoffice@huhs.org.
Student Tardiness
HUHS expects students to be responsible, respectful,
and resourceful. Part of exhibiting world class behavior
includes arriving on time to class.
• A student is considered on time, or present, as long
as his/her two feet are in the classroom door by the
time the bell has stopped ringing.
• A tardy student is any student who arrives no more
than five minutes after the bell has stopped ringing
without a pass from the office or another teacher.
• A student who arrives to class more than five
minutes into the period without a pass, or has
misused the passing policy, is considered an
unexcused absence, a truancy.
Tardiness incidents will be accumulated by the
semester. Parents/Guardians cannot excuse tardiness
to any class.
Hartford Union High School District
A monthly newsletter for HUHS families
Truancy Procedure
Unexcused absences become truancies. In order to
avoid truancy procedures, you must excuse your
student in a timely manner.
• The first unexcused absence, whether all day or part
of the day, starts the HUHS Truancy Procedure.
• More than 10 excused absences (by a parent/
guardian) in one semester is also considered
truancy and starts Step 1 on the HUHS Truancy
Procedure.
• The 13th incident of tardiness in one semester is
considered truancy and starts Step 1 on the HUHS
Truancy Procedure.
Truancy penalties include but are not limited to:
• Loss of privileges (i.e. nonsocial lunch period, loss
of hallway passes, assigned Resource period)
• Student meeting(s) with Dean of Students, school
counselor, and/or school social worker
• Behavior checklist and reflection
• Revoking a work permit
• Step 3 includes Parent/Guardian conference at school
• Step 4 includes a truancy citation from the School
Resource Officer
• Step 5 includes a habitual truancy citation and a
mandatory appearance at the Municipal Court.
Clare Wolf selected as Academic
All-State Honoree
The Golf Coaches Association
of Wisconsin (GCAW) recently
announced Clare Wolf as an
Academic All-State honoree for
the girls’ golf season. Students
are nominated by GCAW member coaches if they meet the following criteria: 1) A
cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5, 2) participation in at least 75% of their team’s
varsity matches, and 3) are at least a sophomore in high school. Clare is a student-athlete who
serves as a great example to others, proving that academic and athletic successes are not
mutually exclusive.
The coaches association believes it is noteworthy that 155 female golfers from around the state have been honored
this year for maintaining high academic standards in the classroom while competing in varsity golf. In fact, the
average cumulative GPA of this year’s honorees is an exceptional 3.852. It is equally impressive that 13 of the top
20 finishers in the state tournament for both divisions combined are academic all-state honorees. Congratulations
Clare on this great achievement!
Grad Qualifies For Olympic Trials
HUHS Boys Swimming Coach, Mr. Pete Meinberg, described 2009 HUHS
graduate, Tyler Remmel, as a short and skinny kid who, in his freshmen year,
approached him in the classroom about joining the swim team. Due to the
number of kids who joined the team that year, Meinberg considered making
cuts, something that is not typically done in the HUHS program. “I was so
close to making cuts, and Tyler would have never made it,” said Meinberg.
“He showed no evident aptitude for swimming. It’s all on video, and he and his family are proud to post it.” But
Remmel stayed on the reserve team, and gradually he started standing out amongst the rest on the team. Against
all odds, he was swimming in varsity events by the end of his freshmen year.
By his sophomore year, Remmel qualified for WIAA State, and was All-State his junior year. By his senior year, he
had the 6th fastest 100 Breaststroke time in WIAA State meet history, and was selected as an Academic All-State
honoree for swimming. “I have never seen anything like this before in my 22 years of coaching,” said Meinberg.
After graduating from HUHS, Remmel attended Ashland College and has a 4.0 grade point average. He has
qualified for the Olympic Trials, the fastest swim meet on earth, which take place next summer in Omaha, Nebraska.
HUHS Athletic Booster Club
What’s a Booster? According to The American Heritage Dictionary a booster is an enthusiastic promoter. That’s
what the members of the HUHS Athletic Booster Club are! For nearly 28 years the parent-run volunteer organization
has been encouraging, supporting and promoting ALL HUHS athletic programs.
Members usually have a connection to one or more sports teams by nature of their student(s) participating in a
particular sport. Therefore, they are there to cheer them on and encourage them. However, the members go beyond
that, they work to keep kids involved in activities to make them academically, socially, career and community
involved. Physical Education and Interscholastic Athletics are an important part of a student’s educational
experience. Studies show that athletes maintain a higher academic average and are less likely to become involved
in school and community problems.
The Booster Club has been able to step in and help bridge the gap between available school sport budgets and the
money needed by the sports teams. Money is raised through memberships, concessions, 50/50 raffles and event
sponsors, and the Club invests 100% of the money raised back into the athletic programs. Funds raised in the
past 10 years have totaled more than $50,830. Students of Booster Club members can apply for one of the $500
scholarships awarded each May. It is open to all Booster Club families who qualify by status of membership,
while students must meet certain criteria.
How to Join:
It doesn’t take much to join; an interest in high schools sports, an interest in helping students get the best high
school athletic experience and an interest in working to make it all possible. Membership dues are an annual fee.
