6 religious therapeutics<br />

S¯a Ómkhya <strong>and</strong> classical Yoga have dualistic ontologies, with consciousness<br />

<strong>and</strong> materiality as the two primordial forms of be<strong>in</strong>g. However, <strong>in</strong>vestigation<br />

of the relation of spirituality <strong>and</strong> heal<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Yoga <strong>and</strong> other<br />

Indian traditions reveals a range of <strong>in</strong>terpretations of the relation of <strong>body</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> Self. As regards concepts of <strong>health</strong>, Western th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g tends to regard<br />

<strong>health</strong> <strong>in</strong> physical <strong>and</strong> psychological terms, but Indian views of person<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>body</strong> substantiate a broader <strong>in</strong>terpretation of <strong>health</strong>, embrac<strong>in</strong>g religious<br />

<strong>and</strong> other dimensions of well-be<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> demonstrat<strong>in</strong>g a closer relation<br />

between medical <strong>and</strong> religious concerns.<br />

Psychophysical <strong>health</strong> is <strong>in</strong>tegral to Yoga’s religious path, but even<br />

more important is the heal<strong>in</strong>g that constitutes liberation: the prevail<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

a person’s true nature, <strong>and</strong> the overcom<strong>in</strong>g of limitations <strong>and</strong> suffer<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Classical Yoga is a system of self-cultivation enjo<strong>in</strong>ed for the atta<strong>in</strong>ment<br />

of liberation, <strong>and</strong> progress on Yoga’s religious path is a process of heal<strong>in</strong>g<br />

(recover<strong>in</strong>g the wholeness) of one’s true nature. Liberation as actualization<br />

of unobstructed self-identity, <strong>and</strong>, consequently, the elim<strong>in</strong>ation of<br />

suffer<strong>in</strong>g, constitute achievement of the <strong>health</strong> of the person <strong>in</strong> her or his<br />

fundamental nature. While cultivation of <strong>body</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>health</strong> is not an end,<br />

but a means <strong>in</strong> classical Yoga, Yoga makes a significant contribution to<br />

our underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of <strong>health</strong> <strong>and</strong> the relationship of <strong>health</strong> <strong>and</strong> religiousness.<br />

This study offers a model of religious therapeutics, based on analysis<br />

of <strong>body</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>health</strong> <strong>in</strong> Åyurveda, classical Yoga, <strong>and</strong> <strong>Tantra</strong>. Relations<br />

between heal<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> spiritual life are treated with<strong>in</strong> the two follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

broad categories:<br />

1. Health <strong>in</strong> its ord<strong>in</strong>ary mean<strong>in</strong>g, perta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to physical <strong>and</strong> psychological<br />

well-be<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

2. Liberation as heal<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> an ultimate sense.<br />

A MODEL OF RELIGIOUS THERAPEUTICS<br />

Religious therapeutics <strong>in</strong> classical Yoga operate from a concept of the<br />

person as hav<strong>in</strong>g a psychophysical <strong>and</strong> a spiritual dimension. Each of<br />

these dimensions is subject to heal<strong>in</strong>g; <strong>in</strong> short, to overcom<strong>in</strong>g problems<br />

that restrict well-be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> vitality, produce suffer<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>terfere with<br />

the prevail<strong>in</strong>g of the person’s true nature. Both psychophysical <strong>and</strong> spiritual<br />

mean<strong>in</strong>gs of <strong>health</strong> are <strong>in</strong>strumental <strong>in</strong> classical Yoga. As regards<br />
