Wow how time has flown
by since our Spring Meeting
that was held early in May at
Roche in Nutley New Jersey!
The meeting was very well
attended, and in this economy
that says a lot about the
excellence of the scientific
program. Rosemary Nicklaus
with support from Barbara
Litzenberger did an exceptional
job bringing together complementary
speakers to educate our membership about
emerging research in the pathogenesis, detection
and therapeutic options related to autoimmune
diseases and inflammatory states. The meeting
was launched by Diagen Xu of Roche who provided
an overview the biologic principles underlying
inflammatory dysfunction and described
current and emerging therapeutic approaches,
challenges and opportunities for
several inflammatory disorders. Provocative
discussions followed, lead by Tom Misko of

nitrotyrosine formation and the clinical translatability
of biomarkers in rodent models of rheumatoid
arthritis. Chris Stevenson of Roche also described
relevant animal models for asthma and chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease illustrating how in
vivo models continue to be vital for furthering the
understanding of disease pathogenesis and for
developing new therapies. Calvert Louden of
Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research
and Development propagated the learning
experience with a nice talk broadening our
scope of translatable biomarkers used to assess
systemic inflammatory response syn-

drome. The typical after lunch audience drowsiness,
that befalls some speakers, was not a problem
for the entertaining delivery and important information
presented by Jon Klover of Covidien
regarding the predictive merits and variable response
of acute phase biomarkers across species
and strains. If the attendees of the Spring Meeting
were not infected with enthusiasm about the science
and value of complement assays by Patsy
Giclas of National Jewish Health, they didn’t have
a pulse. She closed our symposium with pizzazz!
The next opportunity DACC members have to get
together is rapidly approaching at the end of July
in Anaheim California. If you haven’t already done
so, make your travel and registration arrangements
NOW! You don’t want to miss this exciting
week of events in So Cal. On Monday evening
July 26 Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics is continuing
its long running dedication to scientists in
our industry by once again sponsoring the
DACC’s Award for Outstanding Contributions to
Animal Clinical Chemistry, where you and your
partner are invited to the Tortilla Jo’s restaurant at
6:30 pm for the DACC Mixer and Award Presentation
Reception. On Tuesday morning, July 28, seriously
consider joining us in the DACC Executive
Business Meeting at 8:30-10:30am (Hilton Anaheim
Hotel -Capistrano A). Another Tuesday
must-attend-event is our division’s General Business
Meeting and Lunch & Learn session at
12:30-3:30pm (Hilton Anaheim Hotel - Manhattan
Room). After a free lunch we will conduct several
simultaneous informal round table discussions addressing
our common conundrums, challenges,
approaches, and triumphs. Many relevant and
timely topics will be touched upon and each will be
re-capped for the benefit of the greater group.
There will be no charge for this novel “LISTSERV
LIVE!” networking event. Whoever said there is no
such thing as a free lunch was wrong, because a
tasty array of delectable victuals will be provided
for all who attend the General Business Meeting
and Lunch & Learn session. If you need another
reason to support your request to travel to the Annual
Meeting, this session will provide the type of
information that is critical to benchmark and harmonize
operations of preclinical research and
GLP laboratories. On Wednesday July 28, 2:30-
5:30pm, the DACC has put together an official
AACC annual meeting symposium in conjunction
with the AACC’s newest Clinical Transitional
Science division which specifically caters to interests
in our industry titled “From Bench to Bed-

side: Clinical Translational Science”. We’d love to
see you in Anaheim!
Recently the DACC Secretary, Tracey Boone, resigned
her post to pursue software/middleware
related career opportunities outside the preclinical
industry. We thank her for her contribution to the
DACC and wish her well. It was heartwarming and
reassuring about the caliber of our membership
that we had several respected scientists, who are
just as busy as the rest of us, step forward to fill
the acute need of our all volunteer division. Compliant
with DACC ByLaws, the Executive Committee
appointed a replacement Secretary to serve
out the remainder of the vacated office. The appointment
went to Renée Pearson, MS, DVM, Diplomate,
ACVP (Clinical Pathology) of Pearson
Consulting, LLC. The DACC is very appreciative
of Renee’s willingness, and those of the other volunteers,
to get involved!
Membership involvement is up this year as evidenced
by the record high attendance at the open
Executive Committee meeting held at the Spring
Meeting. In addition to elected officers and committee
members, several member guests sat in
and contributed to the division’s business and
plans for the future. This show of interest and support
was exceptional! Don’t miss the action, the
satisfaction of participation, and the promise of
building strong network bonds. Join us in assuring
the continuing legacy of excellent programs for
your colleagues and the mission of the DACC.

Named to Receive 2010 DACC Award for
Outstanding Contributions to Animal Clinical Chemistry
The American Association for Clinical Chemistry
(AACC) Division of Animal Clinical Chemistry (DACC)
is proud to announce that Peter David Eckersall,
BSc, MBA, PhD, FRCPath has been named the
recipient of the 2010 Award for Outstanding Contributions
to Animal Clinical Chemistry. This
award, sponsored by Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics,
is awarded to a recipient that has performed
outstanding work in the discipline of animal clinical
laboratory medicine.
Dr. Eckersall has been an innovator in developing
and exploiting a range of clinical biochemistry applications,
particularly acute phase proteins, proteomics
and inflammatory biomarker characterization
of human and animal disease from pathophysiology
to clinical applications. His impact has been
notable in a continuing legacy of education and
teaching in academia, and in numerous workshops
and symposia, in elucidating mechanisms of dis-

ease and inflammation in animals/models, as well as
influencing advances in biomarker development;
these contributions include, among many others, Creactive
protein, haptoglobin, serum amyloid A, alkaline
phosphatase isoenzyme methodologies, a1acid
glycoprotein, a2-macroglobulin, tumor necrosis
factor receptor (TNF-R2), and thyroid function and
endocrine assessment in animals.
Dr. Peter David Eckersall is presently Professor of
Veterinary Biochemistry, University of Glasgow Veterinary
School, and Chief Scientific Officer and a Director
of ReactivLab Ltd, a company focused on the
development of acute phase protein tests for use in
animal clinical chemistry. In addition, he has initiated
a program to establish a European group for
the use of proteomics in domestic animal research
and diagnosis, and is also engaged in an international
collaboration setting up a link between Glasgow
Veterinary School and the Veterinary College,
Universiti Putra Malaysia for the development
of clinical chemistry and clinical pathology in SE
Asia.
Dr. Eckersall obtained his BS with honors from the
University of Liverpool, an MBA at the University of
Glasgow, and PhD in Biochemistry from the University
of Edinburgh. He became a member of the
Royal College of Pathologists in 1993, and was
elected as a Fellow of the RCPath in 1998. David
Eckersall joined the faculty of the University of Glasgow
Veterinary School in 1980, and has been Professor
of Veterinary Biochemistry since 2002. During
his tenure he has mentored more than eighteen veterinary
postgraduate candidates for MVM or PhD
degrees.
Dr. Eckersall has authored or co-authored over 120
peer-reviewed manuscripts, a text book [Animal
Clinical Biochemistry, The Future] and 8 book chapters
[most recently in 2008: Eckersall, P.D. (2008)
Proteins, Proteomics and Dysproteinemias, in Clinical
Biochemistry of Domestic Animals]. He has been a
frequent invited speaker and symposium organizer
for over 130 national and international meetings
on topics of proteomics and acute phase protein
biomarkers of inflammation, protein analysis and

veterinary diagnosis, and immunogenomics. His research
activities have been highly recognized in the
arenas of proteins, proteomics and dysproteinemias,
cytokines and the acute phase response in posttreatment
reactive encephalopathy following infection,
the use of CRP, haptoglobin, and serum amyloid
A as markers of infection and inflammation, discrimination
between acute and chronic inflammation,
and species differences in the acute phase response
in companion, livestock and laboratory animals.
World-wide interest in the investigation of acute
phase protein in animals has been stimulated by his
research and a University of Glasgow spinout company
ReactivLab Ltd was formed (2007) to commercialize
his research.
David Eckersall is also the Leader of a Veterinary
Gene & Protein Group, which is engaged in the application
of molecular genetics and protein analysis
to investigate areas in animal health. The laboratory
has been established as the leading British center
for research in animal clinical biochemistry with
funding of £10 million and the group has published
over 300 papers.
Dr. Eckersall has had many honors and distinctions;
he is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists
(FRCPath), serves as an Examiner for the MRCPath
in Veterinary Clinical Pathology, is a member of the
European Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology,
the Animal Clinical Chemistry Association, the Comparative
Clinical Pathology Association, and the International
Society for Animal Clinical Pathology, of
which he was President during1996-1998. He has
cultivated numerous international collaborations with
the Utrecht Veterinary School and seven other laboratories
in an European Union Concerted Action: Ontario
Veterinary College; Atlantic Veterinary College;
School of Veterinary Medicine, Davis California; International
Laboratory for Livestock Research, Nairobi,
Kenya; Institute for Animal Health, Compton;
the Moredun Research Institute; and the Faculty of
Veterinary Medicine, University of Perideniya, Sri
Lanka. In 2008, Dr. Eckersall was awarded the distinguished
Heiner Sommer Prize for Lifetime Contributions
to Animal Clinical Biochemistry by the
International Society for Animal Clinical Pathology.

It is with great pleasure that the Executive and
Awards Committees of the AACC Division of Animal
Clinical Chemistry recognize Dr. Peter David Eckersall,
BSc, MBA, PhD, FRCPath as the 2010 recipient
