Nutrition and More
Dear reader,
after a three years absence we are
pleased to present to you the ninth
edition of our product newsletter – this
time with a completely new look! The
NCN Chemistry News is the follow-up of
the former Cyanamide Newsletter and
will be published in a similar frequency as
before.
Historically NCN chemistry constitutes our
chemical roots and remains a focus in our
business. Beyond this, AlzChem offers a
variety of products, applications and technology
which is not directly grafted on to
the NCN chemistry chain.
A few of our products, services and innovations
are presented in this edition. Be
curious and learn about our activities in
2
EDITION 1-2010
the field of dietary supplements, cosmetics,
pharma and feed.
Our latest success in this area is the approval
in the EU in late 2009 of guanidinoacetic
acid as nutritional feed additive
for chickens. Guanidinoacetic acid is the
active ingredient of a formulated additive
placed on the market under the brand
name CreAMINO®.
In the last year a change of the ownership
of the AlzChem Group from Evonik
Degussa GmbH to the private investor
group bluO took place. The strategy of
AlzChem was not influenced by this
change. We are still deeply committed to
serve our customers and will be a reliable
partner for you also in the future.
Guanidinoacetic acid
- a new product in AlzChem´s portfolio
Guanidinoacetic acid (GAA) is a compound that is closely connected to
creatine; a molecule which is manufactured here in Trostberg for more
than 10 years (see next page). In fact, GAA is the direct biosynthetic
precursor of creatine, lacking just the methyl group. In its pure form it
is a colourless, odourless powder which can be taken-up with the diet.
Vertebrates are able to transform exogenous guanidinoacetic acid into
creatine in the body by use of an enzyme called GAMT. Hence, guanidinoacetic
acid is a source of creatine!
Since October 2009 guanidinoacetic acid has been authorized in the EU
as a nutritional feed additive for chickens (EC 904/2009). It was proven
in numerous scientific feeding trials that GAA leads to a significantly
better feed conversion rate in chickens.
Guanidinoacetic acid is the active ingredient of a formulated additive
now marketed by Evonik Degussa GmbH under the brand name
CreAMINO®.
NEWS
NCN
Did you know…?
Creatine is a nitrogenous
organic acid that occurs
naturally in vertebrates and
helps to supply energy to
muscle and other tissue. Creatine
was identified in 1832
when Michel Eugène Chevreul
discovered it as a component
of skeletal muscle. He later
named creatine after the
Greek word for flesh, κρέας
(kreas). Also the name ´sarcosine’
comes from another
Greek word for flesh
(σάρξ, sarx = flesh).
Sarcosine was first isolated by
Justus von Liebig from meat
broth, which led to its name.
Today, AlzChem produces
creatine from sarcosine and
cyanamide, which finally
closes the circle.
By the way, another natural
compound, occurring in the
human body is named after
flesh: L-Carnitine; but here
the Romans and not the
Greek were the patrons.
Carnus: Latin word for flesh.
Creapure®
- premium brand for
creatine monohydrate worldwide
Creatine and its phosphorylated form
phosphocreatine play a crucial role in
energy metabolism. The pair are involved
in making ATP available for all energy
consuming processes in the body.
In numerous studies, supplementation
with creatine monohydrate proved to be
efficient for increasing the Cr/PCr pool
and optimising the energy status.
Creatine is still closely associated with
high intensity exercise but there are many
more interesting applications – the recent
scientific literature being the best proof of
that.
Discover Creapure® for every day life
at www.creapure.com and learn about
creatine benefits for the aging population,
bone health, brain power and much more.
Additionally, creatine monohydrate is
offered in pharmaquality.
Alipure®
- unique supplement for whole body protection
Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is a naturally
occuring dithiol compound which upon
supplementation has been shown to
comprise beneficial effects on the brain
and on metabolism. Via regeneration of
glutathione (GSH), Vitamin C, Vitamin E
and coenzyme Q10 ALA comes into play
in situations where the balance between
oxidative and antioxidative processes is
disturbed.
AlzChem manufactures racemic alpha
lipoic acid and offers with Alipure® a
special quality for the dietary supplement
application - free of organic solvents. For
pharma applications – like in the field of
diabetic polyneuropathies – a recrystallized
quality is provided in the form of
Alipure® P.
The new alpha lipoic acid powder formulation
Alipure® CD features some
interesting advantages allowing for new
applications:
• Increased stability and shelf life
• Improved organoleptic properties
• For powder blends containing minerals/mineral
salts
• For low moisture functional foods
5
Alipure® CD.
CD stands for cyclodextrin.
Cyclodextrins
are a class of compounds
belonging to the
cyclic oligosaccharides.
They comprise a cavity
where a second molecule,
like alpha lipoic acid
can squeeze in between
forming a complex like
that shown above.
ALIPURE CD
Creatinine The New Alpha-Lipoic Acid Powder Formulation
ALIPURE
The unique supplement for WHOLE BODY PROTECTION
– not just a waste product
Creatinine is closely connected to creatine
by its role as the natural metabolic
degradation product of creatine. Synthetically,
it is likewise derived from creatine
monohydrate being formed under acidic
conditions.
Creatinine has applications e. g. in cosmetics
and diagnostics. Up on request,
creatinine can also be supplied in pharma
quality.
ALIPURE CD
