MESSAGE
It has been a decade since DMCC was established and looking out of Almas
Tower over JLT today, it gives me great pleasure to witness all that has been
achieved in just 10 years.
With the support of our members, partners and colleagues, Jumeirah
Lakes Towers has grown into more than a free zone or a development,
it has become a thriving community with over 50,000 people living
and working here. Today, we have 61 completed towers, our four
lakes have been filled, all six playgrounds have been completed, and
a further five towers are due to be completed by the end of the year.
We now have over 130 retail outlets in the concourse and promenade levels,
and during the first half of 2012 we have seen a number of activities aimed at
bringing the community together, such as the first DSF Carnival at JLT (see
page 6) and the JLT Earth Hour initiative (see page 19).
While 2011 was DMCC’s most successful year to date, with 1,357 new
companies registering with the JLT Free Zone, in 2012, we are growing
even faster with 975 new registrations between January and June alone.
The JLT Free Zone now has over 4,800 member companies benefiting from
the excellent infrastructure, facilities and services we have on offer.
As the master developer of the JLT Free Zone, DMCC constantly strives to
ensure that JLT grows into a community that offers its members a convenient
and comfortable lifestyle. We understand that the road works are challenging
and we are continuously working with the RTA to improve the road network.
We would like to thank you for choosing JLT as your home or for your company
and we look forward to receiving more of your ideas and contributions that
will help our community continue to prosper.

‘A RISING STAR’ IN MENA FM
POWER 50 LIST
MENA FM’s third annual Power 50 list
has been released, identifying the topperforming
individuals across the Middle
East and North African fund industry.
Nominations were collected by surveys of
the magazine’s readership and interviews
with key figures in the fund management
space. From this longlist, a shortlist
of 50 names was then confirmed by a
DMCC CLIENT SERVICE CENTRE IN FULL SWING
James Bernard, Business Development Director,
JLT Free Zone, has been with DMCC for over five
years, and is responsible for a number of initiatives
including the development of the DMCC Client Service
Centre, launched in the 4 th quarter of 2011. He speaks
to JLT Times about the impact it has had on the
licensing process.
Why did DMCC decide to set up a dedicated
Client Service Centre?
The aim of the Client Service Centre is to
bring all services that are required in setting
up a company in the JLT Free Zone under one
roof - from registering the company name and
getting a trade license, to obtaining visas and
finding the perfect property.

watch in the year ahead, including Ahmed

A full range of utilities and service providers
will be located on the same level so that
clients can set up utility contracts, open bank
accounts, transfer funds, and even avail of
a range of consultancy services including
Commercial Sales and Leasing Brokerage
services. We have installed ticketing
machines and larger seating areas to make
the experience as comfortable and efficient as
possible.
How has the Client Service Centre
improved licensing and registration
procedures at DMCC?
Having one centre for all services has made
the process easier for our clients as it is now
faster and more efficient, whether you are
setting up and licensing your company or
applying for a visa. In most cases you can
expect to receive a new company license
within less than 10 working days and there is
rarely the need for our clients to meet with us
more than twice at the very most. Many of our
clients also complete the application online at
www.dmcc.ae.
How many Client Relationship
Management (CRM) executives currently
work in the Client Service Centre?
We have a total of 10 CRM executives working
to serve our clients with the highest possible
standards. New clients can walk in without
making an appointment and will get served
almost immediately. Each client comes to us
with high levels of expectation and trust, and
we need to focus our attention on each of
them equally to give them the information and

On average, how many clients visit the
centre every month?
Over 6,000 clients visit us each month. Over
50 clients a day inquire about new company
set up and we register over 100 each month.
In March, we set a record by registering
184 companies.
Do you have any upcoming plans or
projects that will further enhance the
centre?
Yes, we are expanding all of our teams within
the Client Service Centre, and the existing
Centre will eventually be transformed to
accommodate only services for existing
clients as well as immigration and government
services. In parallel to this, we will develop
a separate facility for new clients with an
increased capacity to serve over 12 clients at
any one time.
We have many new products and services
that will be announced throughout 2012,
which we look forward to sharing soon. We
always appreciate our clients’ feedback

DMCC has launched a new user-friendly website
dedicated to assisting customers find freehold or
leasehold commercial and retail space within JLT.
With medium to long term lease contracts available
across the Free Zone, the new online portal
provides existing and potential member companies
a fast and convenient way to find the most
suitable space for their businesses. The DMCC

Following the success of DMCC’s “Visions of
Dubai” gold coins, DMCC launched its new series,
‘UAE Bullion Gold Coins’, in April 2012 which
celebrate the UAE’s achievements as a major gold
trading hub. The UAE Bullion Gold coins build on
Dubai’s reputation as the ‘City of Gold’ and make a
statement regarding the aspirations of the UAE to
continue to support the growth and sustainability of
the gold industry in the UAE.
The first edition of the Gold Bullion Coins feature a
portrait of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al
Nahyan, the UAE president, on one side and Burj
Khalifa, the world’s tallest tower on the reverse.
The second edition of the Gold Bullion Coin will
be launched later in 2012 and will feature a portrait
of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid
Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister
of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai and a rendering

This summer, DMCC has been continuing its drive
to attract foreign investment to Dubai by organising
international events, briefings and road shows.
Most recently, DMCC organised an exclusive
networking dinner in the City of London,
attended by over 50 C-suite executives from
leading government bodies and finance, trade
and investment institutions including Citigroup,
HSBC, JP Morgan, Rothschild, Xstrata, DeBeers,
Department for Trade and Industry UK, and the
UAE Embassy in London. The event aimed to
promote Dubai and DMCC as a world-class
business and trade hub, and an ideal destination
for those looking to expand their presence in the
region.

How long have you been working
with Concordia?
I have been happily working with Concordia
for the past three years, and was working
in the JLT development for two years
before that.
What are the highlights of a typical day
in JLT?
A typical day of duty includes managing and
supporting the Concordia security guards
within the master community and maintaining
a safe and peaceful environment for the JLT
community. Working in JLT is the highlight of
my day.
What is the most interesting part of
your job?
There are many aspects of my job that I find
interesting, particularly meeting so many
different people; such as contractors and
suppliers, OA managers, building managers,
emergency services and the lovely community

The JLT community members need no words

every day. JLT is gradually becoming the
finest community in Dubai with its superlative
facilities and top rate organisations. I would

great pleasure to be part of and serve such a

JLT’S FIRST DSF CARNIVAL LAUNCHES DMCC’S
2012 COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES
Marking the launch of its 2012 community
activities, DMCC hosted the very first DSF
Carnival at JLT on Friday 27 th and Saturday
28 th January, 2012.
Organised by DSF, supported by DMCC’s
managing agent Concordia, and co-
sponsored by Joseph Advertising and Take
a Break JLT (HDS Tower, Cluster F), the
DSF Carnival in JLT brought together fun,
food and entertainment with a spectacular
collection of over 120 performers, including
musicians, jugglers, stilt walkers and clowns.

COMMUNITY SPIRIT
Sejal and Siraj Parikh have been active members
of the JLT community since moving to the area in
2009. Sejal speaks to JLT Times about the sense
of responsibility they feel towards their neighbours
and the activities they organise to support the less
fortunate.
You’ve been in JLT since 2009. What made
you decide to move here and how do you like
living here?
Our family opened an office in Almas Tower so it
made sense to move here as well. We invested
in an apartment in Al Seef 3 and we’re extremely
happy here. There’s a lovely community spirit, it’s
great for children as it’s safe, secure and there
are playgrounds for them to play in and plenty of
space to walk.
Tell us about the charitable work you’ve been
doing in JLT.
A few friends and I in the community recently got
together and decided to organise a food donation
project for approximately 100 labourers working
on beautifying the JLT community. We negotiated
sponsorship from Sukh Sagar Restaurant who
generously put together meal packs and we went
out on site to distribute them personally.
Why did you decide to organise such a
fantastic initiative?
I believe it is our responsibility, as members of
this community, to care about those less fortunate.
I wouldn’t want to be commended for initiating this
activity as it is in accordance with the teachings of
my religion to give charity with a smile.
My other objective is try to instill the importance
of charity in my children as I want them to
grow up to be kindhearted, god-fearing and
responsible members of the community. I wanted
to do something that the children could actively
participate in and learn from.
How did you come up with the idea of
organising food packs for labourers in JLT?
It started when I was driving home once and
I saw a lone labourer by the side of the road.
I happened to have some food with me so I
stopped the car and gave it to him, and the smile
on his face was simply priceless. After that,
whenever I would cook a large amount of food
at home, I started putting some aside for the

was doing and why I was doing it to my children
and I also encouraged them to come with me to
hand the food out.
How did you take your simple acts of kindness
from a family affair to a community activity?
I attend a weekly coffee morning with some women
here in the al seef cluster. a few of the women knew
what I was doing and wanted to know how they

could get involved, so one morning we got together
and fleshed out a plan on how to organise a food
donation activity between ourselves and our children.
My husband Siraj is 100% supportive of what I
do, and fully believes in charity and giving to those
less fortunate. I wouldn’t be able to do this without
his help.
How have your children responded to your
dedication towards helping others?
Today, my children ask me if we can cook together for
the labourers, or if they could give away their clothes
or toys to people who need them. As mentioned
before, I have always ensured that they are aware of
what I’m doing and are present whenever I’m giving
food so they can physically participate in it as well.
There’s a difference between just donating money
for charity, which in itself is great, but to actually
physically be part of the entire process, from cooking
to packaging to giving with your own hands brings in
the human element to charity work.
What are your long term goals for this project?
Nothing is set in stone as of yet and at the moment
it’s something I’m doing on a spontaneous basis. I’d
love to see more people get involved though and
really make a difference to the lives of those working
in our community. The people who work here to
build JLT or keep JLT clean are our peers, not our
subordinates. They work really hard to maintain our
community and should be treated with kindness
and respect. A smile or a kind word costs nothing
but can change the way someone feels, at least for
a moment if not more.

PLAYGROUND COVERS
It has come to our attention that the shade sails
that provide shelter to the children’s playgrounds
in JLT have been damaged by people throwing lit
cigarettes from their balconies. The cigarettes land
on the shade sails and burn holes through them
before landing in the playground area.
This recklessness is not just causing damage to
JLT property, but more importantly is dangerous
to the children and community members using
these play areas. There is a significant fire risk from
this behaviour, which can potentially destroy the
children’s play facility and put the towers at a fire
risk. The burnt areas also weaken the structure and
create the risk of collapsing onto children playing
in the area.
As a caring community, we ask that we are all
careful of where we dispose our cigarette litter
especially from balconies. We are hopeful that
the community as a whole recognises the risk
involved and reports all dangerous activities to
the Concordia Service Centre.
Please keep in mind the unnecessary costs
to all community members either directly or
through insurance claims in order to rectify this
kind of damage.

protect our community areas and consider
the safety of those who are using them.

NEW DOG WASTE STATIONS IN JLT
As the winter weather invites us to stroll and lounge
around the beautiful lakes and landscapes of
JLT, Concordia DMCC is introducing Dog Waste
Stations to ensure that our dog friendly environment
is kept clean and healthy for all community users.
These stations will provide all dog owners with easy
access to environmentally friendly biodegradable
bags, which they can use to dispose of pet waste
whilst walking their dogs. This will in turn prevent
any dog faeces being left lying around on footpaths
and opens areas where people walk, play and eat,
which is an obvious health risk.
As part of the rollout of Dog Waste Stations, we
request that dog owners continue to adhere to
the JLT Master Community Rules and always
keep their dog on a leash whilst in public areas.
Unleashed dogs pose a risk to children, traffic and
other dogs, and are at risk themselves from these
same issues.
We look forward to the community making good
use of these dog waste stations. Dog faeces is
unsightly, unhealthy and devalues the community,
hence all dog faeces must be collected by the
owner/handler using the provided plastic bags,
which should be tied (knotted) and disposed of in
the community waste bins.

create a comfortable and safe living environment

WESTERN PARALLEL ROAD OPENS
There are now three entrances and exits in and out of JLT. Have you used the
new road in JLT yet?
DMCC is pleased to announce that
the RTA has opened the new Western
Parallel Road, running on the south side
of the community and connecting JLT to Al
Barsha, Emirates Hills and The Meadows.
The completion of the Western Parallel
Road is part of RTA’s ongoing efforts to
continuously enhance the JLT area. JLT
is a growing community with 61 towers,
landscaping progressing across the estate
and a range of retail outlets and leisure
facilities opening each month.
Drivers seeking access to buildings in
the southern portion of JLT, including
Almas Tower, are encouraged to use the
new road via Exit 32 of the Abu Dhabi-

bound Sheikh Zayed Road, after which
they should proceed into Emirates Hills
and turn right onto the new section of the
Western Parallel road.
A temporary roundabout has also been
established to replace the long U-turn
leading to the Dubai-bound Sheikh Zayed
Road exit.

SECURE PARKING AT JLT BEGINS
WITH CLUSTERS B, D and E
DMCC commenced a phased activation of the
JLT car parking barriers, cluster by cluster,
from July 2012, starting with Cluster B and
followed closely by Clusters D and E. The
activation programme across all 25 clusters
will take approximately six months.
In February 2012, DMCC communicated
to Tower Sub-Developers and Owners
Associations (‘Tower Representatives’)
that it would activate parking barriers from
early Summer 2012. The intervening time
has allowed Tower Representatives to start
formalising parking arrangements for their
respective towers, including the allocation of
parking bays to specific units and to start a
process of communicating the nature of the
change to unit owners and residents.
Tower Representatives will issue parking
barrier access cards to owners and residents
who have allocated parking bays and inform
them when the system will be activated and

DMCC held its first Earth Hour event at
JLT which saw thousands of residents and

and insects are all known sources of allergens
causing asthma, as well as dust mites - a
common component of house dust. Other
environmental factors that could affect your
lungs and air tubes include air pollution, cold air
and infection. Likewise, exercise and exposure
to allergen within the work place are known to
cause asthma.
Asthma is commonly manifested with recurrent
attacks of difficulty of breathing, cough or
wheezes. The inflamed airways are typically
narrowed giving the sense of difficulty of
breathing. Symptoms of asthma are typically
observed on exposure to the causative factor.
Difficulty of breathing or cough attacks are
frequently manifested during night sleep forcing
the patient to awake for a variable period of time.
If asthma is left untreated, substantial narrowing
of the airways could be noticed. Assessment of
severity of asthma and identification of its cause
constitute the initial step in asthma control.
Prevention of asthma starts with
discontinuation of exposure to pollens or
other allergens. The cause has to be exactly
detected and consequently avoided in a trial
to prevent asthma. Skin tests and blood
tests are now available and directed towards
identification of the causative agent.

The severity of the disease can be assessed
through lung function tests, where the degree
to which the airways are narrowed, is precisely
measured. Consequently, the severity (grade)
of air tubes narrowing is easily detected using a
digital meter (spirometer). The more severer the
narrowing the more medication is needed.
With proper medication, the airways narrowing
and consequently symptoms of asthma are
expected to come under control. Modern practice
of medicine provides several patient-friendly antiinflammatory
drugs (inhalers or tablets) that are
specifically designed to manage asthma cases.
