The new Quedgeley News; more pages, more colour, more opportunities
This is the first edition of Quedgeley News that
has not been edited by Sandra Hughes.
Since standing down after ten years as editor
Sandra has been busy receiving well-deserved
awards and recognition for her achievements
during her ten years editing our community
newsletter.
First was the Gloucester Big Society Prize, which
was presented to Sandra by Richard Graham MP.
Richard said : “No fuss, first rate accounts and governance; and no political angle at all. Just
love of community - and helping some great causes. I thought that deserved the creation of a
new award - the MP for Gloucester's Contribution to Big Society.”
Richard presented Sandra and her husband, Trefor, with first class tickets to London (courtesy
of First Great Western) and a guided tour of the House of Commons.
Second : Sandra was shortlisted as Gloucester Citizen of the Year. The awards were hosted and
presented by the first Quedgeley citizen to be Mayor, Cllr Andy Lewis.
Whilst Sandra didn’t win this year’s award, it is a tremendous achievement to have been
recognised in this way.
Along the way there were also presentations of champagne and
flowers from the Quedgeley News distribution team and gift
vouchers from the trustees of Quedgeley Community Trust
and directors of Quedgeley News.
A well-deserved award for all the hard work that Sandra has
put in to the Quedgeley News over the past 10 years.
Many congratulations to Sandra.
Hello from Field Court Junior School! It’s been a very busy few months here since we returned
to school in the New Year. Firstly you may have noticed that our children are out in the community
wearing a lovely new uniform in a deep purple colour… this is to tie in with our new logo and our
new mission statement: Field Court Junior School… where every child can be a S.T.A.R. The letters
S.T.A.R. stand for Self- Confident, Trustworthy, Achieving their best, and Respecting themselves
and others. The new logo is pictured to the side; we think we look really smart now and we hope
you do too!
It’s been a period of new things at our school, because we have also had all new signs put up in and around the building
to indicate our success at becoming an academy, as well as having all the windows replaced around the school…
so our building looks super smart too now!
The exciting events continue as well: Year 5 have just returned from a week-long trip to a farm in Devon; cycling
proficiency is taking place so we are all safe on the roads and 150 families are in school tomorrow for our Spring
Family Fun afternoon, where mums, dads and their children create, make and bake a variety of items with a Spring
and Easter theme. What a lot going on!
If you’d like to see for yourself some of the things that we are doing, please get in touch and arrange a visit.
Editor writes : A quick word to say thank you for all your kind words of support and best wishes for my
new role, which will not be easy. Sandra has been the editor of the Quedgeley News for 10 years and has made
it what it is today; the Heart of a community giving vital information and local news.
I look forward to carrying on Sandra’s hard work along with a great team of volunteers, with a single aim to
continue producing an informative & useful community magazine.
We look forward to your views & comments. Best wishes Dave Talbot
March already! After a successful "Burns Night", on 24th February we held a Quiz Night.
Several teams took part in a very entertaining evening, run by Dean & Louise Newbery who
are younger members of the branch committee. Brains were taxed with picture rounds - geography
- music and a round where we had to identify 12 different flavours of crisps! Sad to
say the "Oldies came last".
That was followed a week later by a 60s & 70s disco, when we danced the night away; Jiving, Twisting and
doing the "Bump". The evening was highly successful and raised over £450 for the Poppy Appeal, which now
stands at £21,449 (a record for our Branch with another six months to go).
Our next big events are our Queen’s Jubilee Disco on Friday 1st June and our regular Armed Forces Day
Parade of Standards, BBQ etc. This year we hope to involve our local school as well as all three Cadet Forces
and Veterans Organisations. This will be held on Sunday 24th June. We are hoping to have an "Honour Cycle
Ride" from Royal Wotton Bassett to Hardwicke Legion in conjunction with the Riders Branch RBL to arrive
at our HQ before the Parade. Everyone is welcome to join us at our event and as always, new members are
welcome to join us.
What is growing into a large event will take place at Severn Vale School in Quedgeley on
Saturday 28th April starting at 7pm.
together in her childhood when she is moving to sheltered accommodation. It acts out scenes from WW2
from Chamberlain’s speech to VE Day. Most of the cast are young people who have been rehearsing since
last November. The play is professionally written and choreographed.
Part 2 will be in the form of an Act of Remembrance featuring the Susan Tomlins Schools of Dance, the
Band of the Gloucestershire Constabulary and the Pipes and Drums of St.Andrew's amongst others. Veterans
have been invited, especially those who served in the Falklands War as this year we commemorate 30
years since the war and also the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
EXTRA STAFF WANTED.
New “Women only” Running Club
Chantel Cockle has launched a new women-only beginner’s running group in Quedgeley. She runs an 8
week course, which gradually builds you up with a combination of jogging and walking to running 5km by
the end of the 8 weeks.
Chantel has been running these groups for over two years now and has successfully coached over 250
women into the sport. She says “it's a sociable and rewarding way to get fit”. The ladies I have coached have a
fun time while working out. Many get the running bug, going on to complete races such as 10kms and half
marathons. Others just enjoy the time out with friends and run recreationally to keep fit and lose weight.
If you want to lose weight, have some time out from the daily hum drum, or just improve your fitness levels
full stop, my course will help you build up correctly to do this. Running is cheap, effective, and easy to fit in
to your schedule. The class is on Wednesday evenings at 6pm at QWFC Waterwells Business Park and costs
just £20. For further information please call Chantel on 07725086790
More stops for the No 14 bus in Kingsway?
Public transport is a key part of convenient travelling for new communities, and better for the environment
too. So the recent consultation on traffic needs in the Kingsway part of Quedgeley, matters. What would be
the best result?
I believe there's a real issue in Kingsway that can be solved before it escalates. The issue is that number 14 bus
only stops in Woodvale but an increasing numbers of residents in Kingsway (currently 1800 homes) to the east
of Woodvale (eg off Thatcham Ave.), a further 1,800 homes will come onto the market there shortly: and then
an additional 3,000 homes in neighbouring Hunt's Grove before long.
All of these new homes up to a mile's walk from the Woodvale bus stops and so impractical for most.
City councillors Fred Wood and Debs Llewellyn, county councillors Jackie Hall and Vic Rice agree with me
that the best solution is for the number 14 bus to go via Thatcham Ave, with news bus stops, before rejoining
Woodvale.
So I hope the result of this consultation gets enthusiasm from residents for this, and a positive response from
the county council and Stagecoach. I expect the results of the consultation to be published in the first week of
April. On 28th March a door-to-door consultation will take place in Kingsway asking for people’s opinions on
where the 4 bus shelters should be located. All residents are encouraged to take part.
Kingfisher Church (Sunday 10 – 11am at Kingsway Primary School)
What springs to mind when you hear the word church? Boring, irrelevant, out of touch with the real world?
Kingfisher is a vibrant church with a lot going on that is very relevant to what’s happening in the world. Most
people do not expect to see teenagers at church, but at Kingfisher our 180 group is just that – TEENAGERS!
They have fun on Sunday morning and again on Wednesday evening. In fact they will be doing what they do
at Coco’s next to Tesco’s in Kingsway every Wednesday from 7pm. If you are in years 7-8 and years 9 – 13 why
don’t you come along and join them as they chat about relative topics like drugs, alcohol, relationships etc and
see what the Bible says about them. I am reliably informed that the hot chocolate is amazing, so contact our
Youth leader Craig on 07792 228323 and check it out!
If you would like to join us on Sundays we meet at 10am in Kingsway school. We will be celebrating Holy
Communion on Easter Sunday at 10am, all ages will be there. Information on our other activities can be found
on our website www.kingfisher.org.uk or contact our Pastor Katie Tucker 07597 685729.
We look forward to welcoming you.
Quedgeley Library is holding a Easter Story Time and Craft activity event on 2nd April, 2012
starting at 2:30 p.m. for approx. one hour for children aged three and above. This is a ticket only
event, get your free ticket from the Library. We will also be launching our Easter Colouring
Competition at the same time. Book your place early so you do not to miss out. Baby Bounce
Thank you so much to everyone who came along and supported the coffee afternoon on Saturday 18th February
at Quedgeley Village Hall. A big thank to everyone who also donated cakes and prizes for the raffle and
ran stalls and served all the fantastic cakes and coffee.
Get fit and stay fit at Quedgeley Health and Fitness club at Severnvale school
Just after Christmas, fifty children from Beech Green Primary School
began to learn the ukulele. So enthusiastic was their response to the
invitation to learn to play that one eighth of the school now receives
weekly lessons and owns one of these tiny instruments. Within two
lessons the children had mastered four performance pieces and are
now working towards their first level of achievement, a Bronze
Certificate.
The headteacher, Mr Stott, and both music co-ordinators, Mrs McGill (KS2) and Miss Wescott (KS1), wanted
to offer the children a totally new musical opportunity and so they invited “UKE-CAN”, a local ukulele teaching
company run by Sarah Kelly, into school to introduce the instrument to the children and staff.
Through the charity section of the company, called “UKE-CAN CARE”, the children of Beech Green helped
to purchase a GPS system and pay legal fees to enable
a village in the Amazon Jungle to ‘plot’ their land and
thus protect themselves from the heavy industries that
destroy tribal homes and land.
Well done Beech Green! You have shown that “UKE-
CAN CARE”, whilst having fun and learning something
new!
Are your boots made for walking ?
Our April walk takes us over to Haresfield Beacon & beyond
This needs a short car journey to the National Trust car park at Haresfield Beacon, which can be reached
from the B4008 out of Hardwicke taking the left turn sign posted Haresfield, over the bridge at Haresfield
then turn right at the no through road sign. Turn left and up the narrow road, up hill. At the top carry on
for about ½ mile; the car park is behind the wall on your right.
The walk starts near the entrance, go through the hole in the wall and after the sign post the path divides;
take the central path this is a fairly flat path going slightly down hill. Keep to the path ahead for approx 2
miles, after a gate in a short distance at the T junction, turn left uphill. At the top of the hill stop to admire
the views in all directions. Then follow the main path left, The Cotswold Way. This path goes through and
past old burial sites and workings. The path wanders a bit but keep following the Cotswold Way signs, after
quite a distance the path turns left and in a few metres there is a seat - so sit and admire the view. The walk
ends back in the car park. If you wish to extend the walk then go out of the car park onto the grass area and
walk either south to the trig point, or west up to the actual beacon stone views from both points; on a clear
day you can seen the Severn Bridges.
All of this property is National Trust and their bylaws request that you clear up after your dog leave no litter
and take nothing but memories. Thank you.
For many years now there has been a slogan KEEP BRITIAN TIDY, though it does not appear to be having
much effect. Walking around the area and the countryside, more and more litter is appearing, there are many
request for litter picker uppers, WHY? They would not be needed if people took thier own litter home with
them or placed it in appropriate bins.We have been to some of the most beautiful places in Britain only to
find some who had been before us did not appear to have any love for the country side . They have taken out
a picnic and then when finished, have left all of the containers it was brought in, including many times the
disposable barbcue. In some places charges are being implemented to help pay for the clearing up operations.
Any money spent on clearing up after people could be better spent on public services.
IF YOU TAKE IT OUT THEN PLEASE TAKE IT HOME AGAIN EITHER INSIDE OF YOU OR IN A BIN
LINER.
Once when walking in the Lake District we came across this sign on a gate. And dogs, please get your owners
to clear up after you. THANK YOU. The Wandering Freemantles
Quedgeley Area Conservation Association News
Work has been carried out on a footpath adjacent to the stream which follows the boundary of Beech Green
Primary School. A stile in Lilac Way is the start of the footpath, which continues to the green at the back of The
Willows, joining Park Drive. This included clearing the stream and trimming the bordering plants to make
the path accessible. Bark chippings have also been laid.
However whilst this work is good, the bark chippings follow the path then you have a gap where the stream is,
then the bark chippings continue. There used to be a bridge crossing the stream, but the City Council removed
it, as they had complaints from the school. So now to use the footpath, you have to jump across the stream,
which after a heavy rainfall can exceed 3ft in depth and 4ft wide. This is totally unacceptable, as it is putting
people at risk.
This is a public footpath as shown on maps of the Parish pre 1980. The bridge should be reinstated at the cost
of whoever took it down. The footpath was there before the school, and is used by many residents in the surrounding
areas, including mothers and children.
You wouldn't see something like this in a council-controlled area like Podsmead, so why should we have to
put up with it?
Pumpkin Patch
Spring has finally shown her face, albeit reticently. My garden is currently a blank canvas and I gazed enviously
at snowdrops, crocuses and daffodils in other people’s gardens. I have made a list of bulbs to buy in September
so that these little gems can brighten up my garden next spring. My fingers are itching to start sowing
vegetable seeds in my little “4 tier greenhouse”. However, my parent’s tortoise is still in hibernation as I write,
and in his 100-year lifetime he has consistently proved a reliable forecaster of when spring has finally sprung.
I will have to be patient for a little longer…
In the meantime I am planning what to do with my 10m x 9m patch of turf that came with my new-build
home. The NW facing back garden overlooked by neighbouring houses is shady even on sunny days. The
children’s trampoline has been positioned in the shadiest part where the grass has no chance of survival anyway.
The back wall and west facing fence receive sun in the afternoon ideal for a climbing rose, clematis and
honeysuckle. I took advantage of the cheap fruit trees in the local supermarket and bought 2 apple trees (you
need 2 for pollination if you want them to bear fruit, unless there is an apple tree nearby). My sons want me
to plant them 2m apart – as goal posts. My daughter wishes them to be hammock width apart. I will plant
them away from the foundations of the house in sunny positions where they will grow to screen the views to
the houses opposite.
In an act of laziness I bought a pack of 3 vegetable grow sacks and pre-chitted potatoes. The soil here is a grey
heavy clay mixed with builders’ rubble, it will take years of digging in compost and manure to improve it. So,
I confess, I have cheated. I think I will buy some smaller sacks for carrots…
Jobs to do in April:
• Spread chicken grit around tender shoots to hold slugs and snails at bay.
• Sow hardy vegetable seeds under glass, pricking out seedlings as soon as they are large enough to handle.
• Keep on top of early weeds now.
• The first lawn cut of the season should be on a high setting when the grass is dry.
• Make a note of where you would like to plant spring bulbs for next year.
SEVERN VALE W.I.
RAPID UK came to our March meeting to tell us about various disasters around the globe and showed
us slides of their volunteers` efforts to rescue people trapped under fallen buildings, etc. He told us how
quickly the teams could be ready and underway, although the actual journeys took as long as transport
to often out-of-the way places would allow. We saw pictures of sniffer dogs being trained, but they
cannot be used outside the EU because of strict quarantine laws. However, the organisation do a lot of
training with the nationals of other countries, including their dogs. To be a member of RAPID UK takes
courage and dedication and deserves our support.
Carol Newman, who has been the guiding light of our Craft Group for many years, is moving to Cornwall
and was presented with a rose bush for her new garden. We will miss her VERY MUCH but hope
to carry on with the help of other members.
The Reading Group is at present enjoying “The Captain`s Daughter” and the Lunch Group will be eating
in the heart of Gloucester. Ring June Waters (724137) for details.
News from Field Court C of E Infant School
A new term can only mean new topics and lots more fun! YR are becoming Jungle Explorers with
their topic being ‘Animal Kingdom’. Y1 are investigating different types of transport by asking ‘Are
we nearly there yet?’ and Y2 are studying the ‘Secret Garden’ to find out more information about
mini-beasts, garden creatures and their habitats.
Y1 had an exciting journey on a steam train when they visited Perrygrove
which helped them to write descriptive recounts about what they
could see, hear, smell and feel. The children learnt how steam engines
are powered and why diesel engines are now used instead. Everyone
was given a special key and took part in a treasure hunt in the woods.
By searching for clues and answering questions, they were lead to some
boxes where they found one that their key would open. What was inside?….Golden
coins…made of chocolate!! Later in the week they had
a visit from a gritter lorry so now they know how our roads are kept
safe when the weather is snowy and icy.
The School Council spent an afternoon with the Mayor in his Civic Offices at Gloucester Docks. The children
were greeted by Mr Mayor himself and then sat in the Council Chambers ready for their ‘meeting’ to begin.
Mr Mayor called for order before telling the School Council about the history of Gloucester and showing
them many artefacts including the keys to the city’s gates! The children also dressed in the Mayor’s robes and
some had a chance to be the Sword Bearer and the Mace Carrier! All very important roles! (Our teacher Mrs
Ross is looking very important wearing the robes in the picture). Our school governor, Cllr Deb Llewellyn
had made cakes and everyone presented a thank you/birthday card to the Mayor and sang happy birthday! It
was a fantastic experience that will never be forgotten.
News from Severn Vale School
Do you remember your first job interview? It might have been a nerve wracking experience and you might
have wished that you could have had a practice interview beforehand. That is why, this week, all our Year 10
students will have a Mock Interview. We are grateful to the many employers who give up their time to come
into school and interview the students. It is something that we have been doing for several years now and the
students, who take it very seriously, benefit greatly. It is all part of the way in which we prepare the students
for the world of work. They also practice writing application letters, produce CVs and are helped to design
Plan A, B or C for when they leave. We know that exam results are stronger at Severn Vale School than they
ever have been in the past, and that those exam results can be a passport for success. However, those wider
skills of employability are worth an extra GCSE in themselves.
Equally we are keenly aware that it is not easy on the jobs front at present. That is why we are pleased to be
hosting a Jobs Fair here at Severn Vale. The school will be closed for a training day so it is a golden opportunity
to use the facilities for a valuable cause which can benefit the community.
More next month about other aspects of the school’s continuing development.
Quedgeley Baptist Church www.quedgeleybaptist.org
Mark, in his gospel, is concerned to leave us in no doubt as to who Jesus is. Last time we saw that the
way Jesus taught - with unique authority - points to the fact that he was a teacher sent by God. We also
learnt that Jesus practised what he preached!
Immediately after he had amazed the people with his teaching in the synagogue, Jesus entered Simon’s
house. Simon’s mother-in-law lay sick with a fever. When Jesus was told about her he took her by the
hand, lifted her up and the fever left her. So complete and instantaneous was her cure that she began
to serve them all. Mark wants us to see that Jesus has power and authority over sickness. In fact, the
Bible has over 30 examples of Jesus healing people. And as a result: the deaf hear, the blind see, the lame
walk, the mute talk. Mark also tells us that Jesus cured people of spiritual suffering as well as physical
suffering – releasing people from demonic possession. Little wonder, then, that we read in Mark 1:45
that people came to Jesus ‘from everywhere’.
Mark is placing more compelling evidence before us in order to show us Jesus’ true identity:
Jesus is not only a teacher with unique authority;
Jesus is also a healer with unique power
‘And Jesus healed many who were sick with various diseases...
...and people were coming to him from everywhere.’ Mark
1:34 & 45
Mark is building his case as he shows us the evidence. Jesus really is God’s only chosen King. The one
sent by God to save us. No-one else – before or after – has ever taught the way he taught and no one else
has ever healed people in the way that Jesus did.
If you would like your own copy of Mark’s Gospel to read through the course of this year we will provide
you with one free of charge. Alternatively you may like to join one of our small groups attending the
Christianity Explored course.
Do you want a bowling green?
As part of the planning permission for Kingsway back in 2003, Quedgeley Urban Village Limited (QUVL)
were obliged to provide a range of open space and formal sports facilities for the area. One of the sports facilities
proposed is a bowling green. The City Council is aware that some residents have queried the suitability
of this. The Council is therefore giving local people the opportunity to give their views on whether this is the
right sports facility for this open space.
The consultation has recently been posted out to all houses in Kingsway and can also be accessed online at
www.gloucester.gov.uk/consultations. The deadline for replies is Tuesday 10th April. We would like to hear
from as many people as possible so please do go online or contact the Council on 01452 396396 for a paper
copy of the consultation.
Hopefully by the time of reading this the A38 will have had an extra clean up, which was planned for the 14th
March. This is happening due to the concerns raised by a number of residents in the last couple of months.
Due to the busy nature of the road, traffic management has to be put in place in order to ensure the safety of
the litter pickers. The road will be cleaned again in June and September, as per the current agreement with
Enterprise.
Local Youth Movement needs Volunteers
Can you spare a few hours per month to help a local voluntary youth movement, the
Quedgeley Air Training Corps (ATC)?
The ATC offers young people between the age of 13 and 20 the opportunity to gain an insight into the RAF
whilst gaining life skills invaluable in both service and civilian life.
Air Cadets have the opportunity to take part in team events, outdoor pursuits and sports whilst developing
qualities of leadership and good citizenship.
The Civilian Committee provides support for cadet activities. In recent months committee members through
other obligations have left the group. To give effective support to the squadron new members are needed. The
support is varied from collecting of subscriptions; accounting for expenditure and fund raising so the air cadets
can continue to participate in activities
If you are interested in knowing more the Civilian Committee meets the first Monday in the month at the
squadron premises in Naas Lane, next door to Linda Virgo Dance Studio. Alternatively, call the squadron
number on Monday or Thursday evening between 7pm and 9pm to find out more. Telephone number
Dear Friends
In these harsh economic times, it is sometimes worth taking a step back and recognising our relative
wealth and well-being compared to so many people in the world. Here are a few things worth remembering.
If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, or the pangs of starvation,
you are in a better place than 500 million people around the world.
If you have food in your fridge, clothes on your back, a roof over your head and a place to sleep, you are richer
than three quarters of this world.
If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish some place, you are among the top
8% of the world’s richest people..
If you own just one Bible, you are abundantly blessed, one third of the world does not have access to even one.
If you can go to church or practise your faith without fear of harassment or arrest, you are more blessed than
thousands of people in the world.
If you can hold someone's hand, hug them or even touch them on the shoulder, you are blessed because you
can offer God's healing touch.
So, let’s live thankfully and joyfully each day as best we can, remembering others, and seeking to make the
world the fair place God intends it to be.
Every blessing,
Holy Week at English Martyrs Catholic Church
At English Martyrs we are very much looking forward to our Easter Celebrations. We will be celebrating them
once again with our sister parish of Saint Augustine’s, although this year the three major celebrations are taking
place in our church.
Holy Week begins with our celebration of Palm Sunday. The 9:00am Mass is preceded with the blessing of
palms outside and then a procession into the church. The Gospel reading for this day is the account of Jesus’
passion and death according to Saint Mark and is read using multiple voices.
The Wednesday of Holy Week sees one of the major Diocesan celebrations of the year with the Chrism Mass
at Clifton Cathedral in Bristol. Clergy and people from around our diocese which covers all of Gloucestershire,
Somerset and Wiltshire gather for this celebration of priesthood and the blessing of the oils to be used in all
our churches over the coming year.
The Sacred Triduum begins with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday evening when we remember
Jesus sharing the meal with his disciples and giving himself for the first time under the appearance of bread
and wine.
On Good Friday there is a solemn liturgy at 3:00pm which includes a reading of the passion and death of Jesus
according to Saint John, veneration of the cross and distribution of Holy Communion.
Then on Holy Saturday Evening the great Easter Vigil takes place at 8:30pm. This is the most important
celebration of the year beginning with a service of light in the church car park when the new Pascal Candle is
blessed and lit, extended readings from the Old Testament, the blessing of the font and the first Mass of Easter.
There will be Mass on Easter Sunday at 9:00am, although the celebration of Easter lasts for fifty days, ending
with the celebration of Pentecost.
Everyone is welcome to these services and I wish that the blessings of the death and resurrection of Jesus may
be experienced by everyone in a new and deeper way during this holy time.
We are justifiably very proud of the achievements made by our students but are finding it increasingly difficult
to track their progress after leaving us.
We are currently in the process of designing an honours board and would be very grateful if any readers could
I would be very grateful, if you are aware of any information about our former students, please contact Dave
QUEDGELEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWS - MARCH 2012
Waterwells Sports Centre: We are pleased to let you know that after a lot of hard work by the Parish Council
and Quedgeley Wanderers over the last year the contract with Kilbury Construction, a local firm, to build a
sports hall at the centre has now been signed. Work on the building should have started by now and is expected
to take about six months being completed by the end of September. A great deal of thanks is due to all
of those involved and if anyone is interested in hiring the sports hall or meeting room either as a one-off or on
a regular basis they should contact Bev or Deb at the Parish Office for more information.
Parish Precept: Rumours have been spread around Quedgeley that the small amount of the precept you pay
to the Parish Council for the services and facilities it provides has been increased this year. This is just not true
as you will find that this has remained virtually the same for the last four years and again has not increased
this year. What has actually happened is that with the increase in the number of properties built in the parish
this has meant that the income to the council has increased and has been used to meet the increase in costs
we have all had to face. For the things that we do for you for about 75p per week please have a look at our
website as below.
Litter Wardens: At present we have vacancies for part time litter pickers in Quedgeley for up to 10 hours per
week at £6.08 per hour. If you are interested in working in the open air (times of working are negotiable) helping
to keep Quedgeley clean and tidy then please contact Deb or Bev at the Parish Office for more information
and an application form.
If you would like to submit an article on an activity or hobby that you would like to
share with the community, please send your articles to me at editor@quedgeleynews.
com. We would welcome your thoughts and comments.
First time skier at age 59 3/4
I've never wanted to go skiing, preferring a sun holiday where I can laze by the pool, reading, getting a tan.
Skiing was never on the agenda, although my husband had been before and loved it.
I was really stuck on what to get him for his 50th birthday/christmas so in a moment of madness (or rather
nearly 3 hours at the travel agents) I thought I would surprise him with a skiing holiday. I very nervously
decided on Kirchdorf in Austria. Not too far to travel and lots to do other than skiing.
I'm not particularly fit and don't go to the gym. The most exercise I get is working on my allotment, so
thought the "lots to do" would be needed.
We arrived in Kirchdorf early evening, the snow was over 6ft deep and the temperature was minus 12
degrees. There were icicles at least 4ft hanging from the roofs of houses and the air was so fresh. We were
dropped off by the transfer bus and received a very warm welcome from the owners of the small hotel I'd
chosen. I didn't fancy a chalet, having to share facilities with people I didn't know.
The next morning we were fitted for our boots and skis and headed for the slopes, my husband very excited
that he was going skiing again, me very, very nervous. What had I let myself in for ? I had never actually
seen a pair of ski boots and ski's before, except of course on TV.
The boots weighed a ton, like having lead weights on your feet. The ski's, (well mine) had a mind of their
own and I had great difficulty taming them. We had pre booked lessons so off we went to join our groups.
It was minus 16 degrees most days but we had such warm clothing (the idea is to wear lots of layers) that I
never felt cold. Everyone looked like Michelin men with their ski jackets etc, but that’s okay.
The instructors were very patient, some of the group, me included, took longer to catch on with the
principles of skiing. I was the first to fall over and had a massive bruise on my bum, the first of many.
By the end of the week, most of the group, including my husband who was in his element, were going up
on the ski lift to the higher slopes. Me, I didn't get that high, (except to go to the cafe for lunch) but was
very happy with the progress I made and was really pleased with how fast I was able to ski, in control, and
without falling over.
I can honestly say I really enjoyed the experience and will probably go again. I was very scared at times. Sliding
down a hill on skis is very exhilarating but is also very scary. The mountain looks very high when you
are at the top, and feels very scary when you know it's down to you to remember everything you have been
taught and that you have to put it all into practice and all at the same time.
The "lots to do" wasn't needed, as apart from one afternoon when we went walking, we spent every day
on the slopes. In the evening we were so tired we went to bed early. I didn't know I could ache in so many
places.
At the end of the week there was a competition for fastest in the group and my husband won first place.
