APPRAISAL INFORMATION<br />
Under state and federal law, only state licensed appraisers are permitted to provide <strong>appraisal</strong>s or evaluations. Policies<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Smithsonian Institution prohibit staff members from making <strong>appraisal</strong>s, evaluations, au<strong>the</strong>ntications, or<br />
identifications connected with any possible financial transactions. Never<strong>the</strong>less, you may find <strong>the</strong> following<br />
<strong>information</strong> helpful in obtaining a value for your object for insurance purposes or for donating or selling it.<br />
IRS GUIDELINES<br />
IRS guidelines about <strong>appraisal</strong>s can be found at: http://www.irs.gov/publications/p561/ar02.html#d0e617 (see <strong>the</strong><br />
“Appraisal” section). If <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> your object is less than <strong>the</strong> $5,000 limit, a formal, qualified <strong>appraisal</strong> isn’t<br />
necessary, and an informal <strong>appraisal</strong> by one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> on-line appraisers (see below) may be sufficient to establish<br />
value.<br />
