son without leaving much in
terms of scouting reports or
films. "The girls on the team
know more about the league
than the coaching staff.
"We are really going in blind.
What I see of our team I really
ltke. But if you don't have a
meter stick, how do vou judge
it?"
This is Jansen's first exposure
to coaching at the college level,
so it will be a learning experience
for both her players - at
least some of them -- and herself.
The players who won't have
much of an adjustment are
Dawn Pelc, a 5-foot-8 junior
guard; Mary Murray, a 5-9
sophomore forward/center; and
Jennifer Jacek ifrom Livonia), a
5-8 freshman forward.
prime form: she took 60th in
The next three scorers for the
Rocks were all juniors: Ellen
Stemmer. 90th in 20 29; Evelyn
Rahhal, 93rd in 20:32; and Erin
Lang, 97th in 20:34.
Other Salem runners were
senior Mari Disbrow, who was
105th in 20:38. and freshman
Rachael Moraitis, 111th in
20:43.
Plymouth Canton's Becky Wolfrom.
a senior, competed in the
individual runner's race, finishing
27th in 19:56.
Top runner in the team race
was Portage Northern's Sharon
VanTuyl (17:52.60). Livonia
for Jan9en at Divine Child.
"That's definitely a comfort
level for me as a coach," admitted
Jansen. "When you say
something, it"9' not like you're
speaking French or some other
foreign language."
Still, the players Jansen will
need to communicate with best
are sophomore point guard Katie
Cushman, who started at point
for Madonna as a freshman and
was second on the team in scoring
(15.1) and first in assists
(2.8) - and turnovers
