Module III: Evidence-based Health Care and Critical Appraisal. Students in the second<br />

professional year learn the tools of evidence-based therapeutics and critical appraisal of the<br />

literature and their relevance to life-long learning. Topics include causal inference, study design,<br />

introduction to evidence-based medicine and critical appraisal of conduct of randomized clinical<br />

trials; cohort, case-control, and cross-sectional studies; bias in clinical research; and pharmacy<br />

PHTH 81: Pharmacy Practice of Geriatric Patients<br />

Introduces students to important principles of drug therapy management in the older adult, and<br />

provides opportunities to apply and practice these principles.<br />

DPOP 804 (PPES <strong>25</strong>4): Informatics: Use of Large Health Care Databases (5 credit hours)<br />

and weekly 3-hour analysis laboratory session.<br />

This is an interdisciplinary course providing practical training in the analysis of large secondary<br />

databases containing physician, hospital, and prescription data. Course topics include<br />

preparation, algorithm development, quality control, and dataset limitations. The course provides<br />

graduate students and professional students planning a career in health services research and/or<br />

pharmacoepidemiology an introduction to secondary data analysis. The course explores the<br />

challenges and opportunities of working with large health datasets, including databases created<br />

for administrative and clinical purposes. In addition, the course will help prepare students for<br />

careers in research and program evaluation.<br />
