area roundup After shutting out Tulia last week, the Owls face a high-fl ying passing offense this week. Can they keep the Bobcats under control? Getting a win under your belt does a lot for a team’s confi dence. The Hale Center Owls are no exception. After shutting out the Tulia Hornets 22-0 last Friday, Hale Center head coach Paul Chandler said practices have been much more upbeat. “You practice and you practice and you never win,” he said. “It makes everything better when you win.” This week the Owls will put their confi dence up against the undefeated Sunray Bobcats, a team that has outgunned every 10//gameday//09.15.11 team they’ve seen this season. “They are a big-play team,” Chandler said. “They will try to hit you deep, and that is how they’ve gotten a lot of their points is with long passes.” The Bobcats’ main weapon is quarterback Talon Dooley, who is dangerous on the ground and through the air. Dooley’s favorite target is Shay Wilkens, whom Dooley has hooked up with for fi ve touchdowns. As good as the Bobcats are passing, they might be better on getting on track Lockney trying to get season back on the right track Last week was not the week to end up with a canceled game, even if it did result in Lockney’s fi rst win. The Longhorns had lost two straight and were ready to get a good Friday night performance under their belts. Instead, they wound up sitting at home after Amarillo Arbor Christian Academy had to forfeit due to a shortage of players. Barring an environmental disaster or some other act of God, the Longhorns will be on the gridiron Friday night across from the undefeated Tahoka Bulldogs. “It’s been two weeks and we’re ready to play again,” Lockney head coach Malcom Moerbe said. And while they’ve got a 1 in the win column, a “real” win would do wonders for the Longhorns. “Obviously, we need a win for some confi dence,” Moerbe said. To end up with a victory, the Longhorns will have to contain a Tahoka team that has put up an average of 34 points per game this season. “They’re very explosive,” Moerbe said. “They’ve got good size. One thing we’ve got to try to do is get a lot of turnovers. They run the option, so we’ve got to play assignment football and not worry about doing something that somebody is supposed to take care of.” The Longhorns will have to contain the Bulldogs’ Trai Smith, who had 172 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries to rally Tahoka past Plains last week, but they’ve got more to worry about than Smith. “It’s not just him,” Moerbe said. “They’ve got several people. That’s the thing about them, they are pretty well balanced. They’ve got too many other guys that can hurt us.” The Longhorns’ primary focus will be to stop the Bulldogs’ run game. Tahoka went to the air only eight times against Plains for 51 yards. “The problem is that they haven’t had to throw,” Moerbe said. “They’ve been able to move the ball on the ground.” While Tahoka may be explosive off ensively, Plains found some holes in the Dogs’ defense last weekend and generated 22 fi rst downs and 317 yards rushing. “We saw some things (from the Plains game), but we’ll keep those among ourselves,” Moerbe said. “Plains put 32 points on the board, so obviously we saw some things we may try to do.” Owls at Bobcats 1-2 Record 3-0 Def. Senior Julian Celestial has run for six touchdowns, and junior Christian Axelsen has four. The Owls’ defense has been the strongest part of their game this season, so the defense will try to keep Sunray close while the offense fi gures out a way to put points on the board. “We’ve got to fi nd something that will work on offense,” Chandler said. Arbor 39-32 2-0 (forfeit) Olton going for three in a row After a frustrating loss in Week 0, the Olton Mustangs have had solid performances the past two Fridays. It’s all been part of the plan. “We’ve been talking about getting better each game,” Olton head coach Joel Baker said. “We’ve been talking about practicing to be great. We’re not a great team yet. . . . But we’ve been working on being a great team.” A lot of Olton’s success has been due to quarterback Tommy Guerrero. The Mustangs will need another great game from the LubbockAvalanche-Journal Class 1A Player of the Week to pick up a third straight win against Abernathy. “We’re a spread offense, so the quarterback is what makes it happen,” Baker said. “He has a good game, we’ll have a good game. He has a bad game, we’ll have a bad game.” Guerrero had a really good game last week, completing 17of-19 for 234 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 101 yards and three touchdowns, and he had an interception on defense. Despite last week’s low offensive output against Sundown, Baker said the Antelopes are a dynamic offense that can put up a lot of points. Mustangs at Antelopes 2-1 Record 2-1 Def.
