The Theater an der Wien – after serving
for years as a stage for musicals
– was reopened in 2006 as Vienna’s
newest opera house. This theatre by
the Naschmarkt now presents operas
all year round, including the summer
program billed as Operimsommer.
In July 2009, the Theater an der
Wien will stage the premiere of
Gioachino Rossini‘s Il Turco in Italia
(in Italian, with German supertitles),
followed in August by a production
of Mozart’s Don Giovanni with Erwin
Schrott in the title role.
The Schönbrunner Schlosstheater
will present Carl Zeller’s Bird Seller,
a well-loved and often-performed
operetta. And another classic can
be found during the Operetta Summer
program held in the gardens
of the Theresianum palace in the
city’s fourth district. Johann Strauss’
Vienna Blood was not originally
composed as an operetta. It is actually
more of an adaptation. The libretto
was written by Victor Leon and
Leo Stein, which was then matched
with compositions and themes from
Strauss’ rich musical creation and
later augmented with lyrics. www.

Margritte museum
opens
The work of Belgian surrealist painter
Rene Magritte will get a new home
on 1st June with the opening of
a museum dedicated to his life.
Located on the Place Royale in
Brussels, the Rene Magritte Museum
will bring together over 170 of Magritte’s
paintings alongside archival
The museum will be housed in a
neo-classical building known as
the Altenloh Hotel, part of the Museum
of Modern Art complex.Group

New Tivoli
exhibition
Located approx 30 kilometres from
Rome, new exhibition celebrates
the Ancient Roman incarnation of
the modern town of Tivoli, through
a host of archaeological finds on
public display for the first time.
Staged in the archaeological complex
of the Villa Adriana - the 2ndcentury
palace built by the Emperor
Hadrian - the exhibition spotlights
the town`s rise to prominence in
the Roman Empire, with a particular
focus on the palace. Hundreds of
finds have been unearthed in Tivoli,
once Tibur, over decades of excavations
most stored or sent to museums
throughout Italy
The new exhibition offers visitors to
the complex the first opportunity to
admire many of these artefacts in
context. On show in the artificial
grotto of Conopus, exhibits different
aspects of Ancient Roman life.

Street into a grand showcase of

Munich début
On show at Munich’s Bavarian National
Museum until 26th July, is the
exhibition ‘The House of Wittelsbach
and the Middle Kingdom - 400
years of Relations between China
and Bavaria’
As early as the 16th century, the
Bavarian dukes succumbed to the
fascination of Asian arts and crafts
and collected these exotic items for
the Münchner Kunstkammer.The
exhibition examines the history of the
perception of China in Bavaria in five
sections ranging from the fascination
with the exotic to the enthusiasm for
the different aesthetic of Chinese
luxury goods and the idealisation
of the unknown Middle Kingdom to
