I am delighted to present you once 

again with a varied and engaging 

events programme for 2013. 

Aschaffenburg offers something 

for everyone all year round. Fans of 

markets and festivals will enjoy the 

traditional Hamburg fish market in 

April, the volksfest in June, the town 

festival in August and the Christmas 

market in December. Music lovers 

can look forward to the Guitar 

Festival, Afro-Caribbean Festival 

and the Bach Festival. Home games 

of handball stars TV Grosswallstadt 

allow you to watch some exciting 

sporting action, while the Citylauf 

running events in May and October 

are a chance to get involved yourself. 

I would particularly urge you to 

visit the Aschaffenburg Sculptors’ 

Symposium. Following on from the 

resounding success of the event in 

2008, the Museums of Aschaffenburg 

and the New Art Association are now 

organising it for the second time 

as part of the 14 th Aschaffenburg

Culture Days festival. The artists 

involved will be working on the 

meadows beside the river Main, 

Aschaffenburg’s most picturesque 

spot, overlooked by the Pompeiianum 

and Johannisburg Palace. There will 

be many opportunities to speak to 

the sculptors throughout the event. 

Other highlights include the 

exhibitions at the Jesuit Church 

Art Gallery, where you can see 

works from the important private 

collection of Frank Brabant.

are simply too many.

Aschaffenburg‘s 1,000-year history 

With a population of 70,000, Aschaf- 

fenburg is the largest town on the 

lower reaches of the river Main in 

Bavaria and is known as the ‘Bavarian 

Nice’ because of its mild climate. 

Situated in the south-eastern part of 

the Rhine-Main region on the western 

fringes of the Spessart hills, it is also 

regarded as the ‘gateway to the Spessart’. 

The town was founded by the 

Alemanni in the 5 th century and was 

called Ascaphaburc in the Middle Ages. 

There is evidence of human settlements 

in the area as early as the Stone 

Age, however. From the founding of 

the abbey church of St. Peter and St. 

Alexander in 957 until secularisation 

in 1803, Aschaffenburg was part of 

the electorate of the archbishop of 

Mainz and served as a second seat for 

the archbishops. The settlement was 

fortified in around 1122, was granted 

market rights in 1144 and town 

privileges in 1161. In 1803 the city 

became part of the newly established 

Principality of Aschaffenburg, which 

in 1814 was eventually subsumed 

into Bavaria, to which it still belongs. 

Today‘s university town offers a rich 

variety of culture and entertainment: 

the town festival, the Hamburg fish 

market, the palace concerts and the 

Volksfest am Main are only a few of its 

many annual events. Aschaffenburg 

features many fine buildings and 

tourist attractions, providing the ideal 

forum for public events and activities: 

• Johannisburg Palace, 

dating from the 17 th century 

• Schönbusch Park, 

one of the oldest English-style 

landscaped gardens in Germany 

• the Pompeiianum, 

a replica of a Roman villa

In 1924 André Breton, the founder 

of surrealism, asserted that the 

‘power of dreams’ and the release 

of the subconscious would point 

the way to a new and revolutionary 

artistic movement. This exhibition 

featuring works from the collection 

of Axel Hinrich Murken shows that 

since then, three generations of 

artists have continued to explore 

the imaginary and surreal aspects 

of our world, appealing to the deep 

layers of human consciousness with 

their dreamlike imagery. Unreal 

pictorial spaces, fragmented bodies, 

bizarre visions of flying animals and 

half-human hybrid creatures are 

hallmarks of the phantasmagorical 

painting of the 20 th century. 

Spanning a spectrum of stylistic 

forms – traditional, expressionist, 

objective and poppy – the pictures 

transport the beholder to fantastic 

worlds far beyond everyday life.

tournaments, this indoor event 

welcomes around 1,000 players every

‘Moin, moin!’ – Aschaffenburg 

resounds to this traditional north 

German greeting every spring, as 

the traditional Hamburg fish market 

comes to town. For more than 

twenty years, Hamburg’s quaint 

but enormously popular export 

has stopped off here on its tour 

through Europe, giving locals and 

visitors an opportunity to soak up 

its special atmosphere: a taste of 

the North right here on the Lower 

Main in Bavaria. What will it be? 

A juicy fish roll with shrimps or 

Bismarck herring? Some fried fish 

in beer batter? Or how about fried 

fresh herring accompanied by a 

refreshingly tasty beer? Before or

The Destroyed Synagogues 

of Germany –

During Kristallnacht on the night of 

9 November 1938 more than 

1,000 synagogues were burned down 

in Germany. If you also take into 

account the destruction wreaked 

during the Second World War, 

most of the 2,800 synagogues that 

existed in Germany in around 1930 

were erased from the urban landscape. 

Artist Alexander Dettmar seeks 

to preserve the memory of these 

buildings. He has used photographs, 

architectural drawings and 

eye-witness accounts to recreate 

the synagogues in his paintings. 

In pared-down, stylised composi- 

tions, the spotlight is put both on 

the architecture itself and the 

loss.

Night, when all the museums – state,

picturesque old quarter stay open 

late. Live music, cabaret, guided

Nations Festival

There is a new focus for this event, 

which is jointly organised by 

Aschaffenburg town council, the 

association of Aschaffenburg youth 

organisations and the participating 

groups and associations. The aim is 

to make this festival a forward- 

looking project. At the Brotherhood 

of Nations Festival, people 

demonstrate the reality of peaceful 

coexistence and respect in Aschaffenburg. 

Over three days, visitors 

will find a colourful mix of delicious 

food, cultural presentations, music, 

games and activities, discussions and 

information. The focus is on getting 

to know other cultures, overcom-

Carillon Festival 




The craft market in the historical 

ambience of the palace courtyard 

has been attracting lovers of 

fine craftwork since 1987. Eighty 

to ninety artisans from all over 

Germany and its neighbouring 

countries visit the town annually 

on the first weekend in August to 

showcase their work. As well as 

goldsmithing, ceramics, glassblowing 

and brushmaking, there 

are also some unusual crafts on 

show at Johannisburg Palace. 

The Carillon Festival, which takes 

place at the same time, is a musical 

gem featuring church peals and 

concerts in both the palace 

courtyard and chapel. Carillon 

players from Germany and other 

countries demonstrate their skill 

with these unusual instruments. 

There will also be tours to the 

Aschaffenburg carillon.

This event is one of the biggest 

festivals of its kind in Europe and 

attracts tens of thousands of people 

every year from all over Germany 

and its neighbouring countries. 

A gigantic world bazaar, culinary 

delicacies from all corners of the 

globe, a kids’ zone, a beach and 

plenty of folk traditions and culture 

are accompanied by a sensational 

programme of music on three stages.

Every year on the last weekend 

in August, thousands of people 

Aschaffenburg Town Festival 

visit Aschaffenburg for its famous 

town festival. For two days, the 

Bavarian town on the banks of the 

Lower Main is transformed into a 

giant festival site, with many of the 

squares, streets and alleys in the 

town centre turned into venues 

for open-air concerts, comedy and

the German Championships,

the capital of fork lift trucks. The 60 

top drivers from around 25 qualifying 

heats across Germany meet on 

Schlossplatz square to compete for 

the title of ‘German Fork Lift Champion’.

speed they master complex courses

are guaranteed when Germany’s

Wiesbaden’s Frank Brabant has 

acquired a magnificent set of works 

representing the most important artistic 

styles of the 20th century. The 

400 or so works that now belong to 

the collection became an indispen-

personal encounters with artists of 

Classical Modernism such as 

Erich Heckel, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff,

Expressionism and New 

Objectivity through to contemporary 

art. Figure painting – the human 

image in self portraits, portraits, 

nudes and staffage – provides the

Built between 1605 and 1614 for 

Johann Schweickard von Kronberg, 

Johannisburg Palace dominates the 

Aschaffenburg townscape. A significant 

and characteristic example of 

German Renaissance architecture, 

it was the second residence of the 

Archbishops and Prince-electors of 

Mainz until 1803. Towards the end 

of the 18 th century, Prince-elector 

and Archbishop Friedrich Karl Joseph 

von Erthal had the interior of the 

palace remodelled in the classical 

style to plans by his court architect 

Emanuel Joseph Herigoyen. After 

the devastation of the Second World 

War, there was great eagerness to 

restore the palace to its former glory. 

Today the part of the building dating 

from the 17 th century houses various 

museums and exhibitions. As owner 

of the palace, the Bavarian State 

Department of Castles, Gardens and 

Lakes has its own rooms displaying 

original furnishings, paintings 

and a collection of cork models 

of classical Roman architecture. 

Johannisburg Palace contains the 

largest of the Bavarian State Painting 

Collections, with works by Lucas 

Cranach among those on display. 

Aschaffenburg‘s museums also 

feature in a large exhibition devoted 

to local history and craft collections 

including sculptures from the period 

when the castle was built, views of 

the town, guild regalia, furniture, 

ceramics and paintings. Included in 

the collection are works by Christian 

Schad and E. L. Kirchner and others 

by contemporary regional artists. 

The palace is also home to the 

state court library, a repository of 

scientific literature established more 

than 200 years ago by Erthal.

Pompeiianum 

Pompeiianum 


Inspired by the excavations in 

Pompeii, King Ludwig I of Bavaria 

had this idealised replica of a Roman 

villa built by architect Friedrich von 

Gärtner between 1840 and 1848. 

It is a copy of the House of Castor 

and Pollux in Pompeii, named after 

a drawing that hung in the entrance 

hall. The wall paintings and mosaic 

floors in the brightly coloured rooms 

were based on Roman designs. 

Today these rooms provide an 

ideal backdrop for exhibiting original 

works of art from the holdings of 

the state antiquity collections. The 

Pompeiianum is idyllically situated 

amid vineyards above the river Main, 

surrounded by a mediterranean-style 

garden with almond and fig trees.

Schönbusch Park 

Schönbusch is one of the oldest 

and most extensive English-style 

landscaped gardens in Germany. 

In 1775 the Archbishop of Mainz 

and Prince-elector Friedrich Carl 

Joseph von Erthal commissioned 

court gardener Friedrich Ludwig von 

Sckell to convert his deer park into 

an English landscaped park. It took 

until 1790 to complete the work. 

The chief features of the park are 

extensive wooded areas alternating 

with broad green meadows. 

Set against charming landscaped 

backdrops with man-made lakes and 

hills are a series of follies including 

the Lookout Tower and the Red 

Bridge, the Temple of Friendship and 

the Philosophers‘ House, shepherds‘ 

huts and miniature villages. 

Schönbusch doubles as a stylish 

setting for numerous events.

Municipal Theatre 

Basilica Church 


The basilica church of St. Peter and 

St. Alexander is as much an enduring 

landmark of the town as Johannisburg 

Palace. Erected at the behest of 

Otto of Swabia in the 10 th century, 

the central core was designed as a 

Romanesque basilica with later sections 

built in the early Gothic style. 

It is richly adorned with artworks of 

great historical significance. Besides 

the abbey treasury, a collection of 

liturgical objects and goldsmiths‘ 

work unique in the Bishopric of 

Würzburg, artworks include the 10 th 

century Ottonian crucifix and Matthias 

Grünewald‘s Lamentation of 

Christ and Maria Schnee altar. Also of 

interest is the Romanesque cloister. 

In 1957, to mark the thousand year 

anniversary of the town and abbey, 

Pope Pius XII elevated the church 

to the status of basilica minor.

Municipal Theatre 

Aschaffenburg’s municipal theatre is 

one of the most beautiful neo-classical 

theatres in southern Germany. 

It was built in 1811 during the reign 

of Prince-Primate Carl Theodor von 

Dalberg, when Aschaffenburg was a 

principality. The theatre was extensively 

restored in 1961 after suffering 

severe damage through shelling and 

air raids during the Second World 

War. Following a further phase 

of renovation over a three-anda-half 

year period, the Municipal 

Theatre reopened in October 2011. In 

addition to the main hall there are 


two additional stages for performances. 

The programme includes plays, 

musical theatre and dance, chamber 

concerts, comedy, jazz and world 

music, youth theatre and performances 

for children. In 2011/2012 

the municipal theatre celebrated 

its bicentenary with a special anniversary 

programme. The 2012/2013 

season features a total of around 200 

events. The programme is available 

from the Culture Office (Kulturamt).

The Jesuit Church Art Gallery is the 

exhibition centre for the Museums 

of Aschaffenburg and focuses on 

the Classical Modern period and 

fixed installations from the 20 th and 

21 st centuries. In 1612, at the time 

when the palace was being built, 

the Prince-elector of Mainz Johann 

Schweickard von Kronberg founded a 

Jesuit community in Aschaffenburg. 

The accompanying church, which 

was built between 1619 and 1621

Modern art at the 

KunstLANDing 


After a diverse history as a brewery, 

post office, school and youth hostel, 

this neo-classical building stood 

empty until 1997, when its interior 

was renovated with the help of 

sponsors and members of Aschaffenburg‘s 

modern art society. There 

are displays in Café Graffiti on the 

ground floor, and also in the large 

interconnecting exhibition rooms on 

the first and second floors. These two 

upper floors have an area of around 

350 square metres each and provide 

Aschaffenburg‘s New Art Association 

with a platform for contemporary 

and experimental art. Every year 

from early March, four to five 

exhibitions featuring international 

and regional artists as well as smaller 

presentations will be mounted on the 

ground floor – all accompanied by 

artist talks, tours, creative activities 

for children and much more. 

A Christmas art market is traditionally 

held here in early December.

Casino Film Theatre 

A cinema rich in tradition, the Casino 

Film Theatre opened in 1953 and in 

2004 was completely refurbished. Its 

iconic domed ceiling was retained 

and the soft light of the modern 

chandelier gives it a new charm. The 

two cinemas, one with 186 seats and 

the other with 63, exclusively screen 

independent and arthouse films. 

The small theatre has an intimate 

atmosphere and offers an unimpeded 

view of the projection room through 

a large window. The large theatre 

boasts an induction loop for the 

hard of hearing and is furnished 

throughout with paired seating. The 

cosy café on the ground floor is a

Hofgarten comedy theatre 

The Hofgarten has hosted cabaret 

and comedy since 1998. Originally 

an orangery dating from the 18 th 

century, which has also been used 

as a cinema, the building has been

fantastic venue for cabaret and 

revue. Thanks to outstanding

Colos-Saal 

Colos-Saal is the cradle of 

Aschaffenburg club culture and 

a local gastronomic institution. 

It opened in 1984 as a live music 

club (called Klimperkasten), rescued
