Each year in January, the Stadtwerke Düsseldorf Winter Cup welcomes four top clubs
to compete in a first class football tournament. Hosted by Fortuna Düsseldorf and
played in its home ground, the event provides a glimpse of what to expect from the
participating teams in the second half of the Bundesliga season.
Spirit of the competition
The Stadtwerke Düsseldorf Winter Cup was first staged in 2007
and quickly became established as an annual football highlight
taking place during the winter break of the German football
season. As the last preparation tournament before the re-start
of the Bundesliga season, the Winter Cup provides the ideal
opportunity for clubs to test their performance and guarantees
unmissable football action both in the stadium and on screen for
the fans.
With the roof closed at the ESPRIT arena in Düsseldorf, a
thrilling atmosphere is guaranteed as top profile teams
participate alongside host Fortuna Düsseldorf to unleash a
series of four games. The winners of the first two matches
compete for the Cup win in the final with the defeated clubs also
playing against each other for the third place. Each match lasts
45 minutes and in the case of a draw features a penalty
shoot-out to establish the winner. With a total of at least 180
minutes of match action, fans are provided with the very best of
German and international football all within only one day.
For 2013, the Winter Cup is scheduled to take place from 14.00
to 18.00 CET on 13 January. Besides Fortuna Düsseldorf, the
German Champion Borussia Dortmund as well as FSV Mainz 05
and Standard Liège have confirmed participation.

Düsseldorf Winter Cup as well as the marketing of key
sponsorship packages.
mediA prodUction proSpectS
The media production of the Winter Cup is handled by Sport1,
the channel that broadcasts the event live in the German
market, on behalf of Infront. The operation features seven
cameras, providing coverage in SD format (if requested also
available in HD format). Broadcasters can access live and
delayed footage via satellite. The world feed will be produced
according to the 2-1-1-2 rule.

2012 saw the 6th edition of the Stadtwerke Düsseldorf Winter
Cup and was a sweeping success across the board. A total of
37,500 spectators inside the ESPRIT arena witnessed hosts
Fortuna Düsseldorf win at the final. In addition to coverage in
the German market, the Winter Cup was transmitted to over
30 countries and territories, including amongst others France,
Brazil and the Middle East.

The line-up for the 2013 edition of the Stadtwerke
Düsseldorf Winter Cup includes:
• Fortuna Düsseldorf: The team’s return to the Bundesliga in
2012 – having played in the Regionalliga in between –
further strengthened its cult status across Germany and
increased its fan base. The team is well known for
generating a unique atmosphere at the ESPRIT arena.
• Borussia Dortmund: The reigning Bundesliga Champion
and DFB Cup Winner has a number of top international
players in its line-up. It will use the Winter Cup to prepare
its attack on the championship leaders in the second half of
the season.
• FSV Mainz 05: Competing in the Bundesliga for four years
in a row, Mainz is well established in the highest division of
German club football. Having young and ambitious players
in its team, the club fascinates with fresh and offensive
football.
• Standard Liège: Amongst the most successful teams in the
history of Belgian football, Standard Liège has won no less
than ten Belgium Championships and six Cup titles.
