Roller derby takes place on an oval track, with two teams sending five players each onto
the track — three blockers (defence), one pivot (last line of defence) and one jammer
(scorer). Helmet covers are used to display the players' positions: a striped cover is used
for pivots, a cover with two stars is used for jammers, and no cover is used for blockers.
Pivots and blockers from both teams start the game by forming a single pack. The two
jammers, who are not considered to be part of the pack, are positioned 20 feet behind
on the start line. The referee signals the start of jam formation by blowing a whistle. On
this first whistle, the blockers begin moving counter-clockwise around the track. Once
the last blocker in the pack has passed where the front of the pack was initially lined up,
the referee blows the whistle again, and the jam begins!
A jam is a 2-minute countdown period during which both teams attempt to score points.
Points can only be scored by the jammers who attempt to pass the pack and lap around
as many times as possible. After passing the pack in a legal manner the first time,
jammers earns one point for each time they pass an opposing blocker/pivot. During a
jam, all pivots/blockers must remain in the pack. If a pivot/blocker falls or otherwise
becomes separated from the pack, she is out of play (i.e., cannot block or assist the
jammers) until she catches up to the pack.
The first jammer to pass all pivots and blockers cleanly once the jam begins wins the
status of lead jammer for the remainder of the jam. The lead jammer controls the play
and can end the jam at any time before the 2 minutes are up by placing her hands on
her hips, signalling the referee to officially call off the jam. To impede the progress of
the opposing team's jammer, players may block using body parts above the hips,
excluding hands and head. Penalties are given to skaters who block illegally (elbow, trip,
clothes-line, grab, or pull skaters down), fight, behave in an unsportsmanlike manner, or
otherwise break the rules.
A roller derby game is called a bout, and consists of two 30-minute halves. In each half,
as many two-minute jams as possible are played.

Roller Derby Roots
Some of the greatest things in the world started as a scribble on the back of a napkin,
and roller derby is no exception. In 1932, Leo Seltzer was sitting at a bar in Chicago
when he was struck with the idea of adapting then-popular six-day bicycle races in to a
sport that paired co-ed couples in a marathon roller-skating race on a track that covered
the distance between New York and Los Angeles. As he scribbled his thoughts out on
the table-cloth, his transcontinental derby race was born. Twenty-five couples began
this 3,000 mile race at the Chicago Colliseum, but only nine of them finished.
Though this is not the first roller skating derby, meaning race or multi-race event, that
happened, it is where the rules of today’s roller derby got their roots.
While watching the marathon race that he had created, Seltzer realized that the most
exciting moments of the derby were the collisions between skaters. This prompted him
to adjust the rules of the game in to a full-contact sport between two teams of five on a
smaller track. And the fans loved it.
Since the height of its popularity in the 1950’s-through-70’s, roller derby has
experienced many attempted revivals and bouts of popularity. Though largely
unsuccessful, these attempts at revival kept the spirit of the game alive and have led to
a large uprising of all-female grassroots leagues throughout North America.
In 2000, a Texas musician named Daniel Eduardo “Devil Dan” Policarpo recruited
women to skate in a roller derby game that he envisioned as a raucous, rough and
circus-like game. After only one organization meeting and a disputed fundraiser,
Policarpo’s spectacle fell apart. The women, however, self-organized as Bad Girl Good
Woman Productions in 2001 and created the new generation of roller derby, one which
was open to women only. This group went on to form both the first flat-track league
(The Texas Rollergirls) and the first banked-track league (TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls). This
revival of roller derby led to the creation of over 135 similar all-female leagues by
August of 2006.
Leagues outside of the U.S. also began forming. In Canada, the first all-female league of
fifty members was the Terminal City Rollergirls of Vancouver, formed in January of 2006.

In Alberta, The Edmonton Oil City Derby Girls were the first league to the track, with the
Calgary Roller Derby Association only six months behind.
Though the revival of roller derby has been all-female up to late, leagues are beginning
to introduce all-male teams and even some junior roller derby leagues to the mix.
The popularity of roller derby has largely been propelled in recent years by its extreme
portrayal in the media. Attracted to the sport by visions of fishnet stockings, alternate
personas and spine-shattering hits, fans have embraced the sport as a new form of
entertainment. The sport’s sudden growth in 2006 is largely attributed to the exposure
that the Rollergirls reality television show afforded it, depicting the lives of real skaters
from the TXRD Rollergirls. The sport has seen resurgence in interest since the release of
the movie “Whip It” in 2009, which followed 17-year-old Bliss in her journey from smalltown
waitress to full-fledged Rollergirl.
As the sport gains popularity and players, it is rolling on to tracks everywhere and in to
the hearts of fans across North America.
The Birth of Calgary Roller Derby Association
Since June of 2006, the girls of the Calgary Roller Derby Association have been rolling in
to the inception of a new legitimized sport in Calgary.
Before they were the Calgary Roller Derby Association, a small group of women were
looking to bring the recently revived sport of Roller Derby to Calgary. The original
members – Profanity Annie, Scarla Maim, Rollover Jean and Roxy Acetylene – formed
the Sandstone City Roller Girls and built the foundations of the league as it is today.
After a lot of grassroots promotion and some tough financial decisions, these ladies
designated the league as a not-for-profit organization and became the Calgary Roller
Derby Association.
A girl by the name of Wendy Wallace sent out the initial email to see if there was
enough interest to embark on this journey, and invited all interested parties to a
meeting that was set up at Trend Fashions in Kensington. It was at this meeting that
about 10 girls showed up, and most did not continue on due to the amount of work it
was going to take to make this league a reality.
Still, the original members were determined. They started conversations with Lloyd’s
Roller Rink in South Calgary and began to work with them on basic skating skills. Sheriff
Shutyerpaio of Arizona Roller Derby got wind of the new league getting their bearings in
Calgary, and joined up with the girls for some skating when in Calgary for a visit with her
family. The girls ended up planning a full boot camp with her and learned more about
game play, from contact skills to falling properly. They were moving closer to having real
league games every day.

They continued to work on their training and build on their actual derby skills.
Eventually, a training committee was formed and small teams were chosen. It was time
to recruit more girls and bring on a team of referees and support staff. With a booth at
the Slam City Jam, and a shared booth with the already formed Edmonton Oil City Derby
Girls at the 2006 Calgary Tattoo Convention, they were able to find some new recruits
and begin practicing real game play.
One year of practicing later, the Calgary Roller Derby Association hosted their first
friends and family bout. They hosted two of these events at the Triwood Arena and
Legacy sports to adjust to playing of a crowd. The teams that existed at this time were
the Thrashin’ Lassies, the Cut Throat Car Hops and the Girl Grinders.
The league’s first public game took place at the 2007 Tattoo Convention in teams that
were mixed from girls on all three teams who had made their skating benchmarks. The
mixed teams that were formed that day were the Bloody Marys and the Black
Sabbathas.
After that, the league started to gain their footing in Calgary and started hosting regular
practices at Legacy Sports in the winter and the Triwood Arena in the summer months.
It quickly became apparent that the league was not large enough quite yet to support
three teams, and the decision was made to absorb the Girl Grinders in to the other two
existing teams. The original two teams, the Thrashin’ Lassies and the Cut Throat Car
Hops, are still in play today.
In the first season, the Car Hops dominated and won every game of the season except
for the finale. In the final game, the Lassies came out on top.
The second season saw the creation of a third team to accommodate all of the new
members that had hit their benchmarks. This team was called the Bella Bombshellas,
which morphed in to the Blitzkrieg Bellas, and eventually settled in to the name they go
by today, the B-52 Bellas.
In the second season, the reverse of the first season happened. The Thrashin’ Lassies
dominated until their final game, where they lost to the Cut Throat Car Hops. They still
took the title of season champions. The B-52 Bellas would not go down without a win
though- they beat the Car Hops in their final game of the season.
The Thrashin Lassies came back strong in the 2009/2010 season and were undefeated
during regular season play. The championship game saw 3 first string players from the
B-52 Bellas supplementing the ranks of the Cut throat Car Hops to give the Lassies a run
for their money. After a very close and physical game, the Lassies clinched the
championship, securing their undefeated streak.

Along with a rigorous practice schedule and regular game play, the league also attends
boot camps lead primarily by derby connections in the United States. CRDA now has a
travel team, Hellion Rebellion, which is a compilation of the all-stars from the house
teams and have seen play in Vancouver, B.C., Victoria, B.C., Edmonton, AB, Tacoma, WA,
and Spokane, WA.
The Calgary Roller League has been instrumental in helping other emerging leagues get
their footing and learn skills essential to the game of roller derby. Along with the
Terminal City Rollergirls in Vancouver and the Oil City Derby Girls in Edmonton, the
Calgary Roller Derby Association has been one of the flagship leagues to bring the sport
to where it is today in Western Canada. The Calgary Roller Derby Association has
premiered their league to Calgary at various venues including Legacy Sports, the
Triwood Arena, the Corral, the Round-Up Centre, the Big 4 Building, and the Tsuu Tina
Sportsplex. Calgarians can also expect to see the rollergirls on the streets, skate parks
and bike paths around town as spring comes about.
In the 2011 season, the Calgary Roller Derby Association expects to continue their
unprecedented growth. Their recruiting events see amazing turn-outs, and their
fundraising game in March had a larger than expected crowd, raising over $2000 for the
SPCA. As they move forward in to the future, the Calgary Roller Derby Association hopes
to raise their profile in the city and become a larger, more competitive league with a
strong fan base, and maybe even realize their dream of becoming a member league of
the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association.

The Thrashin' Lassies are a group of kilt-wearing,
bagpipe-playing, haggis-eating animals. These ladies will
knock you on your arse, then help you up, buy you a
pint, then knock you down again. This boisterous gang
of upstarts is also skilled at breaking hearts, and other
body parts, if the situation calls for it. Victory is the only
option for the die-hard Lassies and the only way to go
down is to go down fighting! This little clan of whoop
ass packs a huge punch and they are known for their
aggression, hard hitting play, and do or die attitudes.
Scarla Maim - #11 - Captain
The leader of the Lassies, this rowdy rebel ain’t called Scarla fer nuthin’. “Never Say
Criminal Intent - #14
The joker of the crew, CI keeps the mood light. However, when its time to go to war,
those attempting to get by her and sights them in for the kill, which typically results in
her target on the floor.
Dirtbag - #40
The Lassies brutally sarcastic and truthful member, Dirtbag comes by her name
A Lassie who is making considerable efforts to learn her trade and become adept at
strikes.
Honey Blazed - #0
This little Lassie will quickly take you off your guard with her sickeningly sweet
victory dance to the tune of your defeat.
Lexi Fatale - #-1
She may be cute but don’t let this demon of the track fool you. Batting those eyelashes
to downplay her barbarian nature, Lexi Fatale is a skating contradiction. Don’t let down
your guard with this one about, as it will only end in pain and misery for those who take
her for granted.

Temperamental and cunning, you won’t want to make this Lassie angry. She will cut
your heart out and eat it for dinner. Trailer will not accept anything less than absolute
to flog referees.
trained corps of fighters shows up on the radar!
