Millennials aren’t amoral, adrift
By Tom Krattenmaker
To hear it from the handwringers,
the up-andcoming
generation cannot
tell right from
wrong. “Most of our young people
have absolutely no concept
of morality,” radio host Laura
Schlessinger declared last year.
Columnist David Brooks calls it
“depressing” to think about today’s
young adults and, as he
wrote in The New York Times in
September, “how bad they are at
thinking and talking about moral
issues.”
There’s a “dark side” to young
adults’ moral lives, laments the
subtitle of a new book. But before
we succumb to resignation
or rage, it’s good to realize
there’s a bright side, too. Data
and innumerable examples
show that today’s young adults
are a generation marked by impressive
social commitment and
dedication to using their lives
and careers for the greater good.
It’s not that there’s a shortage
of morality among the so-called
Millennial generation, which
reached adulthood post-2000. It’s just that
they have different morals, and different
ways of articulating them. Thank goodness.
Ageneration ‘adrift’?
What of that dark side, as it’s termed in a
book by sociologist Christian Smith and a
trio of co-authors? For Lost in Transition: The
Dark Side of Emerging Adulthood,
the researchers interviewed
230 young adults and found a
lot to worry about, including
destructive behavior around
alcohol and sex and a sense of
morality that is ambiguous
and “adrift,” as the authors put
it. This is a generation, they
write, of “young American
men and women ... whose
lives are far too often confused,
disturbed, and sometimes
badly damaged by some
of the cultural and institutional
features of emerging adulthood.”
To conservative commentator Dennis
Prager, this is the grim fruit of growing
godlessness. “Secularism is ... terrible for
society,” Prager wrote in a National Review
commentary picking up on Smith’s findings.
“If moral standards are not rooted in
God, they do not objectively exist. ...
Millions of American young people have
been raised by parents and schools with
‘How do you feel about it?’ as the only
By Alejandro Gonzalez, USA TODAY
Don’t believe the doomsday hype
about this supposedly wayward
generation. ‘Different’ does not
mean ‘devoid.’
guide to what they ought to do.”
Isuggest we consume a few grains of salt
with these bleak observations. Remember,
seemingly every older generation laments
the apparent waywardness of the up-andcomers.
It’s not as though the current generation
in charge has a handle on morality.
And just as every generation has a Charles
Manson or two, so also does it
have a few Albert Einsteins. As
one who works on a college
campus teeming with socially
committed young people, I’m
in full view of a side of this
emerging generation that
might even make you optimistic.
Yes, it’s true, as critics point
out, that younger Americans
tend to be less religiously
affiliated than older generations.
But data show they are
nearly as likely as their elders
to pray and believe in God. While their
support for gay rights might suggest moral
confusion to social conservatives, they are
just as likely as older Americans to judge
abortion morally wrong. Are these signs of
ageneration with no regard for morality, or
one with its own convictions about what’s
right and what’s wrong?
If you’re around Millennials much, you
know they tend to voice their morality
with more humility, even hesitation, than
the old guard. That’s partly because
they are legitimately suspicious
of easy answers to complex
questions, and their moral
compasses tell them that condemning
others is rarely the
right way to treat people.
Depending on the issue, Millennials’
morality, when you
drill down to its core, can be as
black and white as that of any
old-school culture warrior.
You’ll discover this if you talk
with students on a campus like
mine about the imperative to
reduce carbon emissions, or to
make sure ethical means of production
went into the food they
eat in the dining hall and the
sweatshirts they buy in the college
bookstore.
A2010 study finds more than
aquarter of college students volunteer.
That’s on par with the
percentage of Americans overall
— and a nice counterpoint to
Jersey Shore or what you might
hear about the binge drinking
and sexual hook-ups that pervade
college campuses.
As for the devoutly Christian
members of the Millennial generation
(There are still quite a few.), you
will not hear them shouting about the need
to elect conservative politicians and “take
back America for Christ,” in the parlance of
their more outspoken evangelical elders. In
my encounters with younger Christians,
they’re very serious about Jesus, but intent
on channeling that conviction less toward
hard-edged politics and more toward service
to their community and world.
Ashifting Focus
Gary Schneeberger of Focus on the Family
— an organization long associated with
conservative politics and religion — speaks
of Millennials as a generation that looks to
religion as a force for tolerance and “peace
in society,” not fighting culture war battles.
Hearing someone like Schneeberger elaborate
on Millennials, you might even start
feeling good about the correctives this new
generation is bringing to a society plagued
by hyper-individualism and greed. Millennials
care about “social justice issues,” the
Focus official notes, and they long to be
part of a larger cause. Does that sound like
amorally clueless generation? Or one that
could be our best hope?
Contributors. His next book explores how
younger evangelicals are changing the face of
faith in American culture and politics.
Candidate media-bashing
popular, but a losing tactic
By Peter Funt
An unsavory element in the
current Republican presidential
campaign is the overt contempt
candidates are showing for the
news media. Yes, the media are
easy, sometimes deserving targets,
and huffy outbursts against
journalists during debates usually
bring cheers from the crowd and
could help fundraising. But as a
strategy, it’s misguided.
Though the season of GOP
presidential debates has ended,
the candidates continue
to fire away.
When Rick Santorum
was asked by Charlie
Rose on CBS about the
controversial statement
of his top Super
PAC supporter regarding
contraception, the
candidate turned on
the host: “This is the
same gotcha politics
that you get from the
media, and I’m just
not going to play that
game,” he snapped.
The shoot-the-messenger
tactic doesn’t often faze
reporters, most of whom tend to
have pretty thick skins. If anything
it undermines the integrity,
such as it is, of the campaign,
while diminishing the candidates.
What works for speakers
As a longtime observer of the
human condition and our culture,
I’ve found the most persuasive
and trusted speakers are those
who respond candidly, and positively,
to all questions.
Sure, by showing contempt for
reporters, the GOP contenders are
throwing red meat to the most
conservative voters, as reflected
in a Pew Research Center poll
showing 74% of Tea Party
Republicans believe there is “a
great deal of political bias” in
campaign news coverage. Sarah
Palin popularized the label “lamestream
media,” to energize her
conservative base.
But the wider campaign strategy
does not represent the views of
the public at large. That Tea Party
poll figure is double the percentage
within the general population,
and more than double the
concern among independent voters.
With few exceptions, GOP
candidates have been treated fairly
by reporters and moderators
from the major cable networks.
Media vet candidates
Moreover, the news media
have a job to help vet presidential
candidates for American viewers.
Was CNN’s John King right to ask
Newt Gingrich in a debate about
that day’s headline-dominating
comments from the candidate’s
former wife about their failed
marriage? Of course.
Was it fair game for Rose to ask
Santorum about his
adviser’s comment on
contraception? Naturally.
And did Mitt Romney
gain anything by
dodging a question in
the last CNN debate by
saying: “You get to ask
the questions you
want; I get to give the
answers I want”? Cer-
tainly not.
Voters can decide
for themselves
whether the issue is
one that influences
their vote. It’s one thing for a
candidate to appear to field a
question while really sidestepping
it. But it’s another to pointedly
declare that you don’t respect
the process enough even to pretend
to answer.
Gingrich has gone a step further
by making the outlandish pledge
that, if nominated as the GOP
presidential nominee, he would
refuse to participate in any debates
against President Obama if
the moderators were reporters.
Perhaps in lashing out at journalists,
some politicians seek to show
toughness and fighting spirit. But
sniping at reporters plays into the
networks’ hands because such
outbursts only help ratings.
As for winning votes, another
Pew study last fall underscored
the problem with blasting journalists.
While 59% of Americans
trust the information they get
from the news media, only 29%
trust what they hear from the
source that complains about the
media the most — candidates running
for office.
REGULATION: Companies
fear state act will spur lawsuits.
By BETHANY FIRNHABER Staff Reporter
Large local retailers and manufacturers have
been adding elements to their websites in recent
weeks: prominent links explaining the steps they’ve
taken to identify and eliminate any forced labor in
their supply chains.
They’re doing it because they must comply with
a state law that took effect Jan. 1. But some businesses
are concerned that by following the new law,
they’re making themselves targets for lawsuits.
The new California Transparency in Supply Chains
Act requires retailers and manufacturers with more than
$100 million in annual revenue and a significant presence
in the state to disclose publicly their efforts to identify
any suppliers or subsuppliers that use forced labor or
human trafficking, and what the company is doing to
eradicate it. They don’t necessarily have to do anything
other than disclose what steps they’ve taken, if any.
But some local businesses and lawyers say the
new act allows citizens and activists to sue companies
under the law, which means the companies
Schuermann, who previously had been in the
entertainment industry, working for actor Don
Johnson, German media conglomerate Bertelsmann
AG and Hollywood film production
company Intermedia Entertainment. He also
has a celebrity wife: former MTV VJ Downtown
Julie Brown. Schuermann met with the
Business Journal at his El Segundo office to
talk about how he owes his job to his spouse,
how me made the switch from show business
and how he plans to revolutionize trucking.
Question: You almost certainly are the
only guy running a truck company that
was once in the movie industry. How did
you get into Hollywood.
Answer: I was finishing my M.B.A. thesis in
1991 and, through this internship at a film
company, I ran into Don Johnson. Don and I
became good friends, so in ’92, Don basically
invites me to come to his company – Buffalo
Wallet Productions.
Is that why you came to the U.S., to get
into the entertainment industry?
No, I had my eyes on banking. I did a bank
apprenticeship in Germany and studied international
business at University of Munster, so I
really wanted to stay on the business side. My
plan was to come here and get an M.B.A.,
maybe a year and a half of practical training at
an investment bank in L.A., and then get back
to Germany. But, you know, I got stuck.
Where’d you get your M.B.A.?
That’s a funny story, actually.
I’m all ears.
There was this supposedly Los Angeles university
called Azusa Pacific University.
Yes, in the heart of Los Angeles …
Exactly. (Laughs.) So they were promoting
their M.B.A. program at the University of
Munster and I figured this must be a good
school to go to. I applied, I got accepted and
basically jumped right in.
When did you realize how far from L.A. it
was?
I arrived at LAX and jumped in a cab and showed
the cab driver the address. He looks at me and
says, ‘Are you sure you don’t want to take a shuttle?’
I said, ‘No, take me to this address.’ So he
gets on the freeway and he turns east. After like 40
minutes, I say, ‘Hey man, the beach is that way!’
So you hadn’t looked this up beforehand?
Well, keep in mind, back then we didn’t have
Google maps and things. It was not as easy to
do. I probably could have done a little more
research (laughs), but I was so excited.
What was Azusa like?
It’s a pretty Spanish neighborhood. Coming
from Germany, that’s a real culture shock. I was
like, ‘Wow, people speak more Spanish than
English.’ My roommate, who was also from
University of Munster, he and I had the same
reaction and decided we had to do something.
Like what?
We made sure to finish our classes in Azusa
before September, and then made a deal with
the dean there that we could do the rest of our
classes at UCLA. So we were done with Azusa
by the summer and we could move to the
beach. We became roommates in Marina Del
Rey and finished our M.B.A.s from there.
Did you feel like you’d been duped?
I think there was a bit of false advertisement.
There should have been some disclaimer, but I
don’t regret it. It was fun. It was an experience.
So exactly how did you run into Don Johnson,
and what made you guys hit it off?
I loaned money to a company that was developing
a project with him and Melanie (Griffith),
so I had the pleasure to participate in private
meetings with Don and his agent. That’s
how we met, and we just hit it off. We traveled
together quite extensively. He’s a very smart,
very fun guy.
How much did you loan the project?
I think it was $125,000.
Where’d a young guy get that kind of
money?
It was savings. I always worked; I always
made money. My family is well-off, but we
also have always learned to budget and put
away money.
What did you do?
During my high school time, I always worked
on the side as a roadie. I did that all the way
through undergraduate studies.
Work for any big bands?
Oh, yeah. I worked for the largest lighting company,
at the time, in Germany. So we had every
big act, from Michael Jackson to Pink Floyd to
ports’ clean truck programs drove German
immigrant Martin Schuermann to switch from
show business to the electric vehicle industry.
Martin Schuermann
TITLE: Chief Executive
COMPANY: Vision Motor Corp.
BORN: Hamm, Germany; 1965.
EDUCATION: Studied international business
at University of Munster; M.B.A. from Azusa
Pacific University.
CAREER TURNING POINT: Meeting actor
Don Johnson in 1991 and going to work for
him.
MOST INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE:
Am.b.a.ssador Steven Green, a friend since
1993 and
former U.S. am.b.a.ssador to Singapore. His
father, Karl Heinz Schuermann, “who has the
strongest moral values of anybody I have
ever met.”
PERSONAL: Lives with his wife, Julie, and
daughter, Gianna, in Marina Del Rey. “All
Europeans are living as close as possible to
the beach.”
ACTIVITIES: Running, snowboarding, skiing,
wakeboarding.
Tina Turner. They would all rent from this company.
It was great: free concerts and you get paid
What did your parents do?
My father had a large slaughterhouse, or
butcher shop. He made sausages. The slogan
was, “Schuermann’s sausages in everybody’s
mouth.” In German, it sounds much better.
When he was 40 and I was 15, he retired. He
sat my brother and I down and asked us if we
wanted to take over that business. We both
weren’t really interested in dead animals, so he
decided to sell. Then he invested in real estate.
What did a young guy like you exactly do
for Don?
I was the executive vice president of his pro-
duction company, so I was basically the
financial guy. We made relationships with
Bertelsmann networks, and there were developments
we did with Bertelsmann’s film arm.
I opened up for him the international market.
Was the project you loaned money to ever
produced?
(Laughs). Of course not. That was my first
attempt. I guess I paid the tuition for it, too.
So how long did you work for Don?
We did a TV show called “The Marshal,” and
did work on some of the movies Don was working
on. Then in ’95 we sold “Nash Bridges” to
CBS. At that point, Bertelsmann approached
me to represent them here in the U.S., so I
thought it might be a good time for a change.
How long were you there?
I was there until 2000; until I met Julie.
Julie being, of course, your wife, former
MTV VJ Downtown Julie Brown. How’d
you meet?
We met in April 2000. I remember it because I
was standing with the owner of a popular
restaurant and nightclub in Hollywood. I was
standing right at the entrance. In walks my
future wife. And my friend just basically greets
her, he shows her to a booth and then comes
back to me to continue the conversation. And I
basically said, ‘How rude of you. You just
greeted this beautiful woman and you didn’t
introduce me.’
So he took you over to her?
He walked me over to the booth and said, “I’m
sorry I didn’t introduce you. This is my friend
Martin. Martin, this is Julie.” Several hours
later of long talk, her car got lost in valet. We
ended up sitting in my car for another hour and
a half until 2 in the morning until the valet
located her car. I called her actually that night,
breaking every rule in the singles book.
Please see page 16
16 LOS ANGELES BUSINESS JOURNAL PEOPLE JANUARY 30, 2012
Continued from page 15
You mean later that same morning?
Yeah. I called her and invited her to breakfast.
She didn’t make it to breakfast, but we had
brunch together. That started the relationship.
We basically have spent almost every single
day together after that.
Did you know who she was when she
came into the club?
No. I came to the U.S. in 1990, and so I really
grew up with the MTV of Europe. We had
completely different VJs. I was not familiar
with her work on television at all. I’m a fairly
shy person, I probably wouldn’t have had the
balls to tell my friend to introduce me to this
beautiful woman if I knew she was a celebrity.
So after more than 10 years in Hollywood,
how did Vision get on your radar?
My wife and several of her girlfriends (were
getting together). I just happened to come along.
The only other guy within this group of women
was Lawrence Weisdorn (a Vision founder).
So you both kind of got dragged along by
your wives?
Yeah, and naturally we started talking and he
started pitching the idea. At that time, I was
still actively running Intermedia.
What was the pitch?
The original two guys that basically bred this
idea of an electric drive train in combination
with hydrogen fuel cells, they developed a
drive train they had installed in a Hummer.
Lawrence showed me the actual Hummer.
Julie’s first response was, “I want one.” She’s
like, “I like the Hummer, it’s just you can’t
drive it anywhere because you get flipped off.”
When did you start thinking seriously
about the company?
At that first meeting, he got my attention, but I
also said, “Look, how much does that cost?
Role Player: Left, Schuermann with wife, Julie Brown, and daughter, Gianna, in 2002. With Don Johnson in Berlin in 1997.
Who’s going to buy a $200,000 Hummer and
where do you fill it up? It’s an interesting science
project, but I don’t know where your
market is.”
When was this?
That was in 2007. Then in mid-2008, the ports
basically announced they need to clean up the
air and they announced this clean truck program.
Then we sat down and started discussing,
can this work in real heavy-duty
trucks? At that point, I became interested
because now there’s a market.
Is there?
They make sense at the ports. If you buy a
Hummer, you want the convenience of filling it
up wherever you are and driving it wherever
you want. But with trucks at the ports, there are
these routes that are predesigned, and they all
come back to one central spot, the ports.
You’re not an engineer, so what do you
bring to this?
DODGERS PREMIUM CONGRATULATES
JAIME JARRIN ON RECEIVING THE
LOS ANGELES BUSINESS JOURNAL’S
LATINO SPIRIT AWARD
I think the business sense is important. If you
look at early hydrogen vehicles, they’re the
brainchild of a group of engineers. They don’t
care about the money. They basically design
something they think is great and can do
everything without thinking about a potential
market.
How much does one of your trucks cost?
The base model is $270,000. But right now,
we’re making them in onesies and twosies.
When you streamline the production and
streamline the vendor supplies, you can definitely
shave some cost off the vehicle.
What’s your goal for Vision?
I want to become a supplier to the big truck
manufacturers and supply our components so
they can offer it to their buyers.
Is your wife involved in your work much?
We’re both involved in each other’s. She’s
doing a lot of work for Billboard and I kind of
help her on the business side, how to position
certain shows they’re developing together. And
she gives me her input on what’s going on here.
What do you do together that’s not work?
We like to travel. We used to go sailing quite
a bit, but we actually sold the boat about two
years ago. And we like to just sit with
friends. Julie has a very eclectic group of
friends.
I can only imagine.
Well, imagine a Christmas party with proclaimed
atheist Bill Maher and Larry David
and about 50 others.
That could be a movie right there.
When Julie said, ‘Bill’s having a Christmas
party, let’s go,’ I said, ‘Absolutely, yes.’
Christmas and Bill Maher in one sentence? I
thought, I need to be there just to see what he
has in mind.
And?
It was a blast.

“This single truck was built for $270,000,” TTSI
president Vic La Rosa told Fleets & Fuels.
A vehicle design using lots of lithium batteries and a
smaller fuel cell makes it possible, they say. “It’s a big
difference in system architecture,” says Schuermann.
“We get by with a much smaller fuel cell,” he says – 33
kilowatts as compared to 150 kilowatts in a fuel cell
transit bus.
According to La Rosa, the fuel cell accounts for about
$50,000 of the current $270,000 tab.
“We’re trying to get these vehicles down to $200,000,”
Schuermann says.
The Tyrano is built on a Freightliner (Booth 300)
Cascadia chassis with a 33-kilowatt Hydrogenics fuel
cell, with Siemens (Booth 302) motors and driveline
electronics governed by Vision software making for the
equivalent of a 536-peak-horsepower (3,300 foot
pounds peak torque) engine.
The truck’s hydrogen fuel tanks are provided by
Worthington Cylinders/SCI. Three 17.3- by 80-inch
tanks are pressurized to an unusual 6,250 psi. The
vehicle has lithium ion batteries with an integrated
battery management system.
The Tyrano vehicle is to perform typical drayage operations, hauling freight containers
from terminals in the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
Executives from Vision Motor Corp. delivered a heavy-duty
hauling truck Friday to one of the port complex's most
important cargo haulers, Total Transportation Services Inc. of
Rancho Dominguez.
The Tyrano class 8 rig looks like any other big rig, but a
hydrogen fuel cell powers an electric drive, emitting only
water from the tailpipe. The ports of Los Angeles and Long
Beach are billing it as the world's first zero-emission heavyduty
hydrogen rig. If it performs to expectations during an 18month
test, Total Transportation plans to order at least 100
more.
Experts said the venture could set the stage for a new era in
green cargo movement.
Fleets of zero-emission trucks with the range to deliver cargo
to the Inland Empire's warehouses and distribution centers
would "eliminate one of the principal objections neighbors
and governments have when freight and logistics are a major
part of the local economy — that's the problem of diesel
emissions," said economist John Husing, whose firm,
Economics & Politics Inc., tracks international trade.
The Tyrano uses a combination of technologies to operate
with an expected range of 200 miles, said Rudy Tapia, vice
president for business development for Vision Motor. The
power flows through electric batteries, which are kept charged
by a hydrogen fuel cell. No fossil fuels are used in the truck.
"Up and above the benefit of zero emissions, we at TTSI feel
that this fuel format is the only true way to break our
dependence on imported fuel. Hydrogen is the most abundant
resource on the planet," said Vic La Rosa, president of Total
Transportation , a hauling and logistics company that moves
freight and provides warehousing and rail service and handles shipments through seaports in Los
Angeles, Long Beach, San Diego, Seattle, Tacoma, Wash., and Norfolk, Va.
Getting Total Transportation onboard for the test was a big boost, said Martin Schuermann, chief
executive of Vision Motor.
"It underlines our assumptions that there are multiple commercial applications for our hydrogen
powered zero-emission big rigs in today's trucking industry," Schuermann said.
Officials at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach have a lot riding on the outcome. The nation's
largest and second largest cargo container ports, respectively, put up $425,000 in seed money for the
development of the Vision Motor truck through their joint Technology Assistance Program, which has
an annual budget of $1.5 million. The program has funded several projects, including a hybrid diesel
tugboat from Seattle-based Foss Maritime Co.
"We really want to see the truck put through the paces to see how durable the fuel cell system is," said
Heather Tomley, director of environmental planning for the Port of Long Beach. "We're hoping that it
works as well as they think it will."
In addition to the on-road Tyrano, Total Transportation will test a Vision Motor truck more like the
common terminal tractor, designed to move containers inside the ports.
Kevin Maggay, air quality supervisor for the Port of Los Angeles, said its green technology efforts so
far, including the introduction of fuels that pollute less than earlier versions, were just the beginning.
Vision Motor's business plan may have tapped into a way to avoid the problem all small start-ups
face — the inability to rapidly scale up to major factory production levels. It's not building the trucks.
It's using Freightliner to provide the chassis and cab. It's not building the electric motor, which is
made by Siemens. The fuel cell is made by Hydrogenics Canada. Vision Motor will deliver the
Zero-emission heavy-duty hauling rig at L.A. and Long Beach ports: Seaport complex takes delivery of zero-emission hauling rig - latimes.com
Nobody has seemed to notice the zero-emission cruise ships in the LA Harbor recently. Zeroemission
taxis and buses and go with them. Also there is the empty parking lots too. I am not
sure what the missing cruise ships does to the Port of LA wallet but the air is currently much
cleaner for now.
The world's first big rig powered by
electricity generated from hydrogen fuel
cells rolled out of an El Segundo
manufacturing plant on Friday and headed
to the ports of Los Angeles and Long
Beach.
Vision Motor Corp.'s zero-emissions truck
will undergo a yearlong series of rigorous
tests at the twin port complex by Total
Transportation Services Inc., a Rancho
Dominguez-based freight hauler.
The demonstration is part of the Clean Air
Action Plan enacted in November 2006,
which calls for examining technology that
will significantly cut pollution in San Pedro
Bay.
"At the Port of L.A. and the Port of Long
Beach, we are taking our position, in a
small way, to begin the alternatives that
are necessary for our entire country and
the entire world," said Dave Arian, a Los
Angeles harbor commissioner.
Vision Industries, in El Segundo, turned over keys to the world's first zero
emission hydrogen fuel cell truck Friday during a ceremony at it's El
Segundo headquarters. President and CEO Martin Schuermann discusses the
truck with attendees. (Steve McCrank / Staff Photographer)
"It's very difficult to develop something like this when you're up against corporations that want to keep the same
operations in place because that's the way they make their money," Arian said. "Companies like (Vision) are
innovative, set a new style, set a new trend in the face of a new economy for America."
Vision Motor Corp. has spent five years developing hybrid trucks and rolled the first successful model out of its
El Segundo manufacturing plant in April 2009.
At a cost of $270,000 each, the Vision Tyrano is an electric truck that runs on a battery recharged by a
hydrogen fuel cell. No air pollution is spewed from the
million.
"We believe, based on testing, that the
power and maintenance and fuel costs will
far exceed any truck on the road today,"
vehicle and pure water is the only by-product
emitted, said Martin Schuermann, president and
CEO of Vision Motor Corp.
"You could actually put a water faucet on your
dashboard and drink from it," Schuermann said. "It
powers up the same way as any other truck. Just
turn the key, the truck is on, put it in gear and it
goes."
The trucks are capable of carrying 80,000-pound
loads with a range of up to 400 miles, but port
officials will run a series of tests on the new big rigs
to
determine how they operate under varying road
conditions, distances and load factors.
Pending a successful trial run, executives with Total
Transportation Services Inc. have signaled that they
intend to purchase 100 of the Vision trucks for $27

Vision Industries Receives a Letter of Intent from Total Transportation Services, Inc. to Purchase 100 Class-8 Trucks
Vision Industries Receives a Letter of Intent from Total
Transportation Services, Inc. to Purchase 100 Class-8 Trucks
El Segundo, California -- Vision Industries Corp. (OTCBB: VIIC) announces that it has received a
Letter of Intent from Total Transportation Services, Inc. (TTSI) of Rancho Dominguez, California, to
purchase one hundred zero emission Tyrano hydrogen fuel cell-electric class 8 heavy-duty trucks at a
total purchase price of approximately $27,000,000 dollars. The purchase is subsequent to the successful
trial of the initial vehicle which will be delivered to TTSI on Friday the 22nd of July. The Letter of Intent
also opens the door for TTSI to purchase an additional three hundred Vision trucks, bringing the total
value of a TTSI sales contract to approximately $108 million dollars.
"We are pleased to see such demand from a trucking company of TTSI's caliber. It underlines our
assumptions that there are multiple commercial applications for our hydrogen powered zero emission big
rigs in today's trucking industry," says Martin Schuermann, CEO of Vision Industries Corp.
To jumpstart the LOI, TTSI will take delivery of the first Vision Tyrano zero emission truck for testing
in commercial revenue service. The initial truck will perform typical drayage operations, hauling freight
containers from port terminals in the Ports of Los Angles and Long Beach to rail yards and other
distribution facilities.
"Up and above the benefit of Zero Emissions, we at TTSI feel that this fuel format is the only true way
to break our dependence on imported fuel. Hydrogen is the most abundant resource on the planet,"
says Vic La Rosa, President of Total Transportation Services, Inc.
TTSI will take delivery of the initial zero emission truck at a Kick- off Event on July 22, 2011 at Vision's
El Segundo R&D Facility. The Kick-Off Event is being called "The Birthplace of the Hydrogen Economy -the
Future of Transportation Today." The vehicle is part of a project funded jointly by Vision and the
Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles through the Technology Advancement Program (TAP).
Port of Long Beach and Vision Sign Agreement for Zero Emission Truck Demonstration
EL SEGUNDO, Calif., Nov. 17, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Port of Long Beach and Vision
Motor Corporation of El Segundo, California (OTCBB:VIIC) have entered into an agreement to
develop and demonstrate one (1) hydrogen fuel cell/plug-in electric TYRANO class 8 on-road
truck and one (1) hydrogen fuel cell/plug-in electric zero-emission terminal tractor (ZETT), which
terminal operations. Vision trucks will be put into service and evaluated by Cal Cartage and TTSI,
two trucking companies that operate at the Port of Long Beach and the Port of Los Angeles.
Robert Curry, President of California Cartage Company, said: "Zero-emission is a laudable goal, if
it can be coupled with the power to handle heavy-duty drayage, it could make these new trucks a
valuable addition to any fleet. We are pleased to have been selected to test the capabilities of
these tractors." Vic La Rosa, President of TTSI offers this statement: "TTSI has always been and
will continue to be leading edge when it comes to the introduction and use of new clean
technology. We are extremely excited about the Vision's zero-emission heavy duty vehicle. We
believe that port cities located in the middle of major population areas will greatly benefit from
this technology."
The Port of Long Beach is contributing $425,000 to assist in the project development and
demonstration. The Port of Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners is planning to consider
cost-sharing this demonstration project in the amount of $212,500 at an upcoming board meeting.
Vision CEO and President Martin Schuermann stated: "We are very excited to add the Port of Long
Beach to our list of demonstration partners for our Heavy-Duty Zero Emission Trucks. Together
with Cal Cartage and TTSI, we will be able to expose these exciting trucks to a large base of
potential users and customers."
the terminal truck industry in the last 20 years. The Zero Emission Terminal Truck (ZETT) will be
based on the PHETT's platform. The ZETT will be the only zero emission terminal truck that will
meet the demanding environment and duty cycle of a terminal truck and have zero emissions. We
have thousands of trucks in Southern California and are pleased to work with Vision Motor
Corporation to provide this zero emission terminal truck to the Port of Long Beach.".
Board of Harbor Commissioners
SUBJECT: RESOLUTION NO. - AWARD OF PURCHASE ORDER
CONTRACT WITH VISION MOTOR CORPORATION TO RETROFIT
HARBOR DEPARTMENT-OWNED BALQON ELECTRIC YARD
TRUCKS
SUMMARY:
Staff is requesting approval of a Purchase Order Contract with Vision Motor Corporation
in the amount not to exceed $1,400,000 (includes taxes) to retrofit a total of fifteen
Harbor Department-owned Balqon Corporation E-20/E-30 Electric Trucks, but only
authorizing the order of six retrofits now, and additional retrofits if and when additional
grant funding is received. The retrofits would upgrade the battery-only system to a
hydrogen fuel cell hybrid system. It is anticipated that the proposed hydrogen fuel cell
retrofit would double the battery range of the trucks to make them more suitable for port
operations. The Hydrogen Fuel Cell Hybrid Electric Yard Trucks would be maintained
and operated by the Port of Los Angeles terminal operators. Staff recommends
approval of this Purchase Order Contract due to the environmental benefits and longterm
economic advantages to the City of Los Angeles. The costs of the first six retrofits,
up to $622,000, will be reimbursable from a $1.4 million federal grant that has been
authorized for the Harbor Department from the United States Department of Energy's
(USDOE) Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The
Harbor Department continues to seek additional federal/state funding to enhancel
upgrade the remaining nine electric trucks of an entire fleet of fifteen. If additional
funding is secured, the requested approval by the Harbor Commissioners would also
allow the Executive Director to order the retrofits of the remaining electric trucks.
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the Board of Harbor Commissioners (Board):
1. Approve the Purchase Order Contract with Vision Motor Corporation to retrofit up to
fifteen (15) Harbor Department owned electric trucks with hydrogen fuel cell hybrid

systems and authorize said expenditures (Transmittal 1);
2. Authorize the Executive Director to execute the Purchase Order Contract for and on
behalf of the Board;
3. Authorize the Executive Director to place an initial order of fuel cell enhancementl
upgrade kits to retrofit six Harbor Department owned electric trucks;
4. Authorize the Executive Director to place an additional order of fuel cell
enhancementl upgrade kits up to the remaining Harbor Department owned Electric
Truck fleet, subject to securing a fully reimbursable federal/state grant to offset the
cost; and
5. Adopt Resolution No. ____
DISCUSSION:
Background - On November 20, 2006, the Harbor Department and the Port of Long
Beach jointly adopted the Clean Air Action Plan (CAAP) , a comprehensive program with
initiatives designed to substantially reduce air emissions from major sources in the two
ports. A CAAP Update was recently approved at a Joint Commission meeting on
November 22, 2010. Emission sources targeted by the CAAP include ships, trains,
cargo handling equipment, harbor craft, and heavy duty trucks. Harbor Department staff
has determined that adopting new technologies that significantly reduce emissions will
be necessary for the Port of Los Angeles (Port) to meet its overall emission and health
risk reduction. In addition to the CAAP goals, the Port is striving to achieve substantial
reductions in greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) consistent with AB32.
The City of Los Angeles (City) was awarded $37 million from the Department of Energy
through the United States Department of Energy's (USDOE) Energy Efficiency and
Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. In March 2010, the Harbor Department
was awarded $1.4 million of these funds from the City of Los Angeles, Environmental
Affairs Department (these funds are now managed by the Community Development
Department). The Harbor Department divided the funding into three projects, two of
which have already been approved by the Board of Harbor Commissioners. The two
approved EECBG funded projects are (1) the installation of a Hybrid Propulsion System
for the Angelina II and (2) the purchase of a zero emission Class 8 hybrid electric truck.
Both projects will be completed by the grant end date of July 2012. The hydrogen fuel
cell enhancementlupgrade kit will be the third and final EECGB funded project.
Department and Balqon Corporation to manufacture 25 battery-operated electric trucks
(Model E-20 and E-30), including battery cost. To-date, Balqon Corporation has
delivered 15 of the 25 electric trucks ordered and the Harbor Department has paid
approximately $4.3 million. The remaining 10 electric trucks are on hold because testing
results indicate that when the Balqon yard truck pulls extra-heavy loads (e.g. >50,000
Ibs), it exhibits reduced battery life compared to the testing at lower load levels (Le.
Selection Process - To identify possible hydrogen fuel cell hybrid system vendors, staff
issued a Formal Request for Bid (FRB) on March 4, 2011. Key requirements set forth
for proposers were for the hydrogen fuel cell hybrid system are: (i) 16 kilowatt hydrogen
fuel cell power module with mounting equipment; (ii) hydrogen tanks with an appropriate
PSI range of 6250 type 3, hydrogen fuel container with installed manual valve and
pressure relief devices; (iii) cab changes; (iv) labor; and (v) design/engineering servicesas
required. These requirements were designed to identify an enhancement/upgrade
that could immediately be used in yard tractor operations as part of staffs planned
demonstration program.
Only one vendor, Vision Motor Corp, submitted a bid by the bid due date of March 18,
2011. To encourage as many bids, staff reached out to potential vendors that may be
interested in competitively bidding for this solicitation. Only one bid was received and
based on the analysis (see Transmittal 2), the cost to enhance/upgrade each truck is
$75,000 plus tax. In addition, a one-time payment for an engineering/design plan at
$150,000 plus tax is proposed to document the enhancement/retrofit requirements. If
the Harbor Department opts to enhance/upgrade additional electric trucks in its fleet,
additional engineering/design plan fees would not be required since the bid allows up to
15 trucks as part of the guaranteed pricing within the bid solicitation notice (Bid No. F
735). The total cost to purchase the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power Module for the initial
order of six trucks is $658,500 (includes taxes) and up to $622,000 is reimbursable from
a $1.4 million grant that has been authorized for the Harbor Department from the
USDOE's EECBG. The remaining $36,500 will be absorbed by the Harbor Department.
The cost of the additional nine potential retrofits is approximately $741,000 (includes
tax) and will occur only if additional grant funding is secured.
ECONOMIC BENEFITS:
Spending under this Board action will support the equivalent of 3.1 direct and 3.4
secondary jobs in the five-county region.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
This Purchase Order Contract would authorize the Harbor Department to purchase six
Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power Modules for Harbor Department owned Balqon E-20 and E
30 Electric trucks. In accordance to the USDOE's EECBG project specifications, the
incremental costs of the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power Modules are one hundred percent
reimbursable. Ongoing operating and maintenance costs are expected to be $2,500
