Vision Motor Corp.'s zero-emissions truck will undergo a yearlong series of rigorous tests at the twin port complex by Total Transportation Services Inc., a Rancho Dominguez-based freight hauler. The demonstration is part of the Clean Air Action Plan enacted in November 2006, which calls for examining technology that will significantly cut pollution in San Pedro Bay. "At the Port of L.A. and the Port of Long Beach, we are taking our position, in a small way, to begin the alternatives that are necessary for our entire country and the entire world," said Dave Arian, a Los Angeles harbor commissioner. Vision Industries, in El Segundo, turned over keys to the world's first zero emission hydrogen fuel cell truck Friday during a ceremony at it's El Segundo headquarters. "Companies like (Vision) are innovative, set a new style, set a new trend in the face of a new economy for America." Vision Motor Corp. has spent five years developing hybrid trucks and rolled the first successful model out of its El Segundo manufacturing plant in April 2009. At a cost of $270,000 each, the Vision Tyrano is an electric truck that runs on a battery recharged by a hydrogen fuel cell. No air pollution is spewed from the million. "You could actually put a water faucet on your dashboard and drink from it," Schuermann said. "It powers up the same way as any other truck. Just turn the key, the truck is on, put it in gear and it goes." The trucks are capable of carrying 80,000-pound loads with a range of up to 400 miles, but port officials will run a series of tests on the new big rigs to determine how they operate under varying road conditions, distances and load factors. Pending a successful trial run, executives with Total Transportation Services Inc. have signaled that they intend to purchase 100 of the Vision trucks for $27
