From the Editor’s Desk 

Family Bond has completed 40 years. It was in February, 1967 

the first issue of the Vincentian Bulletin released with a noble aim of 

linking the members of the Congregation with a common bond. 

In the first issue of Family Bond, the then Superior General V. 

Rev. Fr. Jacob Kallarackal wrote, “I am sure all our confreres will 

welcome the idea of publishing a small bulletin giving from time to time 

the news about the whereabouts and activities of our members and 

keeping us abreast of the gradual development of our Congregation. 

The bulletin will also be a medium for the members of communicating 

their ideas and experiences. Above all the bulletin which is rightly named 

the ‘Family Bond’ will help to foster the fraternal bond of love which 

should thrive among the sons of St. Vincent. So the motto I wish the 

bulletin to pursue is: “Be careful to preserve the unity of spirit in the 

bond of peace” (Eph. 4:3)”. 

Over the past forty years, the Family Bond continues to keep the 

members of Vincentian family united in spirit. Let it continue to do so 

for many more years. Let me remind you with joy that the Family 

Bond has been published over the internet since last year. You can 

download it from our website: vincentiancongregation.com. I wish 

to express my heartfelt thanks to all who send news and articles to the 

Family Bond. I would also request every one of you to contribute your 

share in making the Family Bond an effective organ of our Congregation. 

The towering paternal presence of Rev. Fr. Joseph Thuruthikattu 

VC whom we affectionately called ‘Vallyachan’ is no more with us. 

Let his memories inspire us to go back to our roots and live out our 

charism. This issue of the Family Bond carries three articles on Fr. 

Joseph Thuruthikattu, each looking at him from different angles. The 

continuation of the article of Fr. John Kavumkal on Good Manners in 

Community Life which deserves special attention is included in this 

issue.

GENERALATE NEWS 

Greetings from the Generalate House! 

Christmas Celebration 

We had a nice Christmas this time. The neighbouring youth and 

children prepared a beautiful Christmas Crib outside the chapel with 

great enthusiasm. Our small chapel was packed for the Mid-night mass 

and the morning mass. 

Priestly Ordinations 

Fr. General and Councilors tried to attend as many ordinations as 

possible. In spite of the Hartals and strikes they made sure that at least 

one of them was present at every ordination. Many hours of journey 

and long hours of standing during the ceremonies made Fr. General 

take rest and treatment for swelling on the feet. 

Reception to the New Priests & Family Day 

The death of Fr. Joseph Thuruthikkattu over shadowed the Home 

Day celebrations. The celebrations were cancelled due to the demise 

of our ‘Vallyachan’. However, our 24 new priests were accorded a 

warm reception on 13th January. They celebrated Holy Mass on the 

next day morning which was a memorable experience for the 

neighbouring faithful of the Generalate. 

Construction in Progress 

The construction of the new block of the Generalate is progressing 

slowly but steadily. The roof slab of the ground floor is being concreted. 

Health Corner 

V. Rev. Fr. General is cured of the swelling developed on his 

feet. Still he is taking Ayurvedic medicines for the same.

Rev. Fr. Thomas Thayil is diagnosed to be suffering from liver 

cancer. 

Rev. Bro. Paul Moodayil’s general health has improved. However, 

he is reported to have lost much of his memory. 

Let us remember these confreres in a very special way in our prayers. 

Condolence 

The paternal loving presence of our ‘Vallyachan’ is no more with 

us. The demise of Rev. Fr. Joseph Thuruthikkatt who was a link between 

the revivers and the forthcoming members of our Congregation 

has certainly caused a void which cannot easily be filled. It was on 

January 13th evening that he was called for his eternal reward. 

Fr.Sales Marattil’s uncle and Fr. Shaji Veluthedathukattil’s uncle 

passed away in the recent days. Condolence and prayers.

Prayerful Greetings from Marymatha Provincial House, 

Angamaly! 

Ad Multos Annos! 

It was a day of great joy that we celebrated the Silver Jubilee of the 

Priestly Ordination of Very Rev. Fr. James Kallumkal VC, the Provincial 

Superior of the Marymatha Province together with Rev. Frs. Joseph 

Kalapura and John Punnolil on 18th December 2006. A good 

number of our confreres and relatives of Fr. James took part in the 

function. After the solemn concelebrated Holy Qurbana, a public meeting 

was held at the Provincial House and His Beatitude, Varkey Cardinal 

Vithayathil, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church and 

Very Rev. Fr. Varghese Puthussery, Superior General of the Vincentian 

Congregation were present. The meeting was followed by agape. 

Some Recent Visits 

Very Rev. Fr. Provincial Superior went to De Paul Institute of 

Religion and Philosophy, Bangalore on January 17, 2007 to attend the 

governing body meeting. After the meeting, he met the seminarians 

personally. From there he went to the novitiate house at Meenangadi 

and conducted conferences of the novices. On the 25th January he 

presided over the meeting of the second annual day celebrations of De 

Paul Public School, Mysore. The next day he went to St. Vincent’s 

Minor Seminary at Edathotty and presided over the anniversary celebrations 

in the seminary. On the 27th January he reached back at the 

Provincial House. Rev. Fr. Varghese Menachery, the Provincial Councillor 

for Social & Charitable Works, Mission visited all the houses in 

Good Shepherd Region, Andhra from January 8, 2007. He came 

back to the Provincial House on January 19, 2007. 

Canonical Visit 

Very Rev. Fr. Superior General and Rev. Fr. George Vettaparambil, 

General Finance Officer came to the Provincial House for the Canonical 

Visit on December 22, 2006. It was time that enhanced our fraternal 

life and the formal domestic and council meetings were also conducted 

during the days that they were here. 

Happy Birthday 

It was a matter of pleasure that we could celebrate the Birthday of 

Very Rev. Fr. Varghese Puthussery, the Superior General on December 

23, 2006 as he was with us for the Canonical Visit. 

In union of our Prayer 

On December 9, 2006 we celebrated a requiem Holy Qurbana 

thanking the Lord for the gift of Fr. James Manithara to the Congregation. 

A good number of our confreres and his relatives prayed together 

for the repose of his soul.

Christmas Gift 

Following the days of Christmas, 8 of our deacons were ordained 

Priests. Very Rev. Fr. Provincial Superior attended the ordination ceremonies. 

On January 13, 2007 we arranged a reception to the newly 

Ordained Priests of the Congregation and 19 of them were present. It 

was a joyous day that gave us the opportunity of knowing each other. 

Fr. Joseph Thuruthikkattu Passed Away 

Fr. Joseph Thuruthikkattu was admitted in L.F. Hospital, Angamaly 

on December 12, 2006 due to fever and breathing difficulty. He was 

discharged from the hospital on the eve of Christmas. Due to failing 

health he was admitted again in the hospital on December 29, 2006. 

As his condition was not stable Fr. Provincial Superior administered 

him the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick on January 8, 2007. 

On January 13, 2007 at 4.45pm he breathed his last. At the request of 

the Superior General of the Preshitharam Sisters, his body was taken 

to Preshitharam Generalate, Kalady, where he served for years, and 

the Sisters offered him prayers there. After that his body was brought 

to Marymatha Provincial House at 8.45 pm. The funeral was conducted 

on January 14, 2007 at 2.30pm. A large number of Priests, 

Sisters and relatives of Fr. Thuruthikkattu participated in the ceremony 

and paid him their last respects. The demise of Rev. Fr. Joseph 

Thuruthikkattu was a great loss to the Congregation. 

To The Mission Again 

After the completion of PGDCA course Rev. Fr. Joy Vellaramkalayil 

went back to the Sacred Heart Region, Africa to resume missionary 

activities there. We wish him all the best and God’s blessings in his new 

responsibility. 

Welcome Back 

Rev. Fr. Peter Muttamthottil returned to the Province having 

completed his B.Ed. studies and is appointed Vice-Principal De Paul 

School, Karivena. Due to health reasons Rev. Fr. Philip Thayyil who 

was teaching Scripture in Tangaza College of the Catholic University 

of East Africa renounced his post and returned to India for ministry. 

Rev. Fr. Sebastian Purayidam who was sent for pastoral work in the 

Archdiocese of Thrissur for one year returned to the Province after 

completing his pastoral ministry in Pallikkunnu Parish, Varandarappally. 

We wish them all the best! 

On Vacation 

Rev. Frs. Joseph Kurupamparambil, Jinu Puthussery, Biju 

Valliparambil, Antony Thekkanath, Paul Gnalian, John Pullan, Jose 

Thekkumattam and Albert Kannaen came here for the holidays. We 

wish them a warm welcome. Rev. Fr. James Thoyalil has gone back 

after the vacation and is appointed Assistant Parish Priest in the Cathedral 

Church of the Diocese of Pensacola – Thalhousie, U.S.A. 

Hospitalized 

On January 23, 2007, Rev. Bro. Paul Moodayil was admitted in 

L.F. Hospital, Angamaly due to high blood sugar and general weakness. 

He is still in the hospital undergoing treatment. 

New Residence for Regional Superior 

Rev. Fr. John Kallattil, the Regional Superior and Rev. Fr. Paul 

Puthuva, the Regional Finance Officer of the Good Shepherd Region 

started to live in a rented house at Gannavaram to initiate the process 

for the construction of the new Regional House at Chinna Avittappilly.

Greetings to all from Vincentian Provincial House, Kottayam! 

Parents Meet 

Parents and the immediate relatives of the Deacons had come to 

the provincial house on 7th of Dec. for one day programme. It was a 

great success; and the new priests and their relatives are so grateful to 

Rev. Fr. Provincial and other members of the provincial House for 

conducting such an enriching day. 

Silver Jubilee Celebration 

With great joy and sincere gratitude we celebrated the Sacerdotal 

Silver Jubilee of Rev. Frs. James Kallumkal VC, Jose Kalapura 

VC, John Punnolil VC and Francis Cheruparambil VC at Vincentian 

Provincial House, Kottayam on 21st & 22nd (Thursday & Friday) 

December 2006. We were blessed with their gracious presence and 

prayers. 

New Year Celebration 

We are all gathered on the eve of the New Year in the chapel to 

give thanks to God for all his graces through out the year. We started 

the Holy Hour at 10.30 p.m. and welcomed the New Year with the 

Thanks Giving Mass. Many came to wish us ‘Happy New Year’. 

Thanks to everyone. 

Diaconate, Sub-Diaconate and Karoya 

Congratulations to all the theology students who have received 

their respective Sacred Orders on Jan. 6th 2007. Wish them all the 

very best in their ministries. 

New Priests’ Day 

Our province is blessed with 12 young, dynamic and vibrant new 

priests this year. Their priestly ordinations were held in their own respective 

home parishes. Let us congratulate each of our new priests 

very specially at this moment. They are Rev. Frs. Valliyamthadathil Alex, 

Kodakkathanathu Joseph, Kunnumpurathu George, Pullattu Mathew, 

Thattarukudyil Joseph, Kulathur Varghese, Cheruvil Thomas, 

Kuttikkattu Cherian, Chirackel Antony, Kalayil Joseph, Kadankavil 

Dominic, Vettickal Joseph. Wish them all the blessings of the Lord in 

the priestly life and continue to pray for them. 

Farewell and Welcome 

We bid farewell to our dear Rev. Fr. Innocent Puthentharayil VC 

as he is transferred to Vincentian Vidyabhavan, Aluva after his selfless 

service at the Provincial House as well as to the local community. Thanks 

a lot dear father. We assure you of our prayers and wish you all the 

best in the new place. 19th of January was the day of reception to Fr. 

Thomas Cheruvil, our new secretary to the provincial who substitutes 

Fr. Innocent.

DE PAUL INSTITUTE OF RELIGION AND 

PHILSOPHY, BANGALORE 

Banni Enjoy Maadi (Come and Enjoy): 

In the month of December 2006 we went to ‘Wonder La, Water 

Amusement park’ for our annual picnic. The whole day we spent, 

rather celebrated there enjoying all the rides of the park. As we learned 

from our experience, if we enter once in all the rides there, we will be 

free of all types of fear. We recommend Wonder La for your picnic. 

To Serve our Masters 

Some of the first year and all the second year brothers spent two 

weeks in different destitute homes and villages experiencing and sharing 

the difficulties and sorrows of the poor and the abandoned. As 

they shared their experiences, we realized how fortunate we are. 

Silent Night 

We celebrated Christmas and New Year with due solemnity. 

We observed a three hour vigil to bid goodbye to the past year and to 

welcome the New Year. This was followed by a solemn Mass and 

some entertainments. 

Vidya Dhanam Sarva Dhanal Pradhanam 

The third year students submitted their research papers by the 

first week of January and now they are busy preparing for the comprehensive 

examination. The second and first year seminarians are 

preparing for their annual exams. There were classes by some visiting 

professors, such as Fr John Kandathinkara for psychology, Swami 

Vikrant for Indian Philosophy, Fr Thomas Njarackal for Management, 

Fr Antony Plackal for Bible, and Bro. Varghese Parecattil for 

‘Space and Time’. Bro. Varghese is presently doing his M.Ph. in 

Dharmaram Vidya Kshetram and has proved to be a promising future 

professor of philosophy. 

Daddy Visits his Children 

Very Rev. Fr. Varghese Puthusserry, our Superior General along 

with Fr George Vettaparambil arrived here on 18 January 2007, for 

the canonical visit. As there was also the governing body meeting, all 

the three Provincial Superiors also were there. The reception to the 

new priests was also arranged on the same day and it made the day 

more colourful and joyful. 

Atithi Devo Bhava 

In the reporting period we were fortunate to welcome very many 

guests, such as Mr Joe Fernandez from Australia, Fr Jacob 

Manampuram MCBS, Fr Emmanuel Mappilaparambil MSFS, Fr 

Sebastian Palamoottil who is a professor in St. Joseph’s pontifical Seminary, 

Aluva, Fr Saji Kottaram VC who is doing B.Ed. in the Christ’s 

College, Fr Lijo Chalackal VC, the Head Mater of the De Paul School, 

Mysore and Bro. Jomon Thekkemury. You are also most welcome to 

the De Paul Institute.

R.I.P. 

Rev. Sr Puncratia FCC who was our Librarian from 1995 to 2000 

expired on 11 January. Rector and some of the staff members participated 

in the funeral at Clarist Convent Angamaly. She served our community 

with a motherly love. In her both Mary and Martha were fused 

into one. Even after the retirement from here she used to shower her 

motherly love and sisterly encouragement through her letters and frequent 

queries. May her soul rest in peace! 

Miscellany 

The annual competitions are going on. The chapel construction 

goes on as planned. Thank you for your prayers. We shall meet in the 

next issue. Till then, goodbye.

JANAMPET 

As the spirit of New Year and other celebrations is very vibrant in 

the entire campus of Janampet, let us share our cup of joy with you all. 

Retreat 

The vitality and health we enjoy are not sprouted out all on a 

sudden. They are actually the fruits of the retreat preached by Fr. Anto 

Kannampuzha V.C. His preaching was something different as it was 

marked with spontaneity, smile, humor, and an incessant flow of the 

word of God. Fr.Anto helped us to get back to our Novitiate spirit and 

prayerfulness. Dear Fr.Anto, We are extremely happy with what you 

have done for us. 

Picnics and Tours 

This time Goa had a rare chance to receive some special dignitaries. 

They were none other than the Brothers of St.Vincents College. 

We took a break from our busy schedule of studies and other activities, 

and completely deposited ourselves in to the fun of sight seeing, 

sea bath, beach volley, instant cricket, window shopping, dinner out 

etc. and etc. we feel privileged to put our feet in the soil blessed by the 

life of St.Francis Xavier. We gratefully acknowledge and appreciate 

the care and concern of Rev.Fr. Joseph Pallickamadam who made our 

stay over there a pleasant one. We returned filled, fulfilled, nourished 

and refreshed. 

The fare-well given to the outgoing deacons Paul and Jose was 

something special and very much personal. Their excellent way of living 

was acknowledged as inspiring and challenging. And the college is 

just waiting to welcome them as priests. Congratulations and best 

wishes. 

“Late than never” works often with our lives. It is done this time 

especially because we had a rare type of celebration of Xmas, New 

Year, Pongal and Samkranthi on the day of 10th of Jan 2007. It was 

only that day we could all be back from our X’mas ministries, home 

holidays and ordinations. 

Another spectacular event of the year was the distribution of ‘Simon 

Memorial Scholarship’ for the best students of the classes five and 

eight; for its first time. The scholarship arranged and the programs conducted 

were by the SSSMILE Fellowship of St.Vincents College. 

Renewal, visits 

We are happy that we are visited by our Renewal Team in the 

month of oct.2006.We acknowledge and appreciate the difference it 

brought to our lives thanks to the team. 

Rev. Fr.Varghese Puthussery, our superior general was kind enough 

to make his canonical visit which fell between Nov.26-27, 2006. We 

appreciate you father for having invited us to form ourselves in a unique 

and special way as Vincentians to meet the challenges of the time. 

We appreciate the visit of Rev.Fr.Varghese Menachery the Provincial 

Councilor for Mission. Your kindness is appreciated and generosity 

applauded. 

We thank one and all who visited us. We keep the doors wide 

open for you all. Thank you. 

VINCENTIAN STUDY HOUSE, KOTHI 

Prayerful greetings to all from VSH, Kothi. After a small period 

of Christmas holidays, we are back home again. We, fathers and 

brothers, except two of us, went to Kerala to participate in the Priestly 

ordination of our beloved deacons. After completing their sojourn at 

V.S.H. they were given a warm send off on November 28. We thank 

God for making them His priests forever. We celebrated our Christmas 

in the V.S.H. on 21st December and revealed our Christmas friends. 

Rev. Fr. Rector after participating in the ordination ceremonies went to 

our Bangalore De Paul Institute and Rev. Fr. James Mudakodil was at

Allahabad St. Joseph Seminary in the month of October to take classes. 

Frs. J.Mudakodil and G. Appassery participated in the annual retreat 

in Ahamadnagar and took part in the mission gathering over there. 

Some Academic News 

Dn. Kuttikkattu Cherian (IV year) and Bro. Puthen Chacko (III 

year) became first and second rank holders respectively in the scholastic 

year 2005-06. Both were awarded with prizes during the Home 

Day celebration at St. Ephrem’s Theological College. Dn. Kuttikkattu 

Cherian became top-scorer in the comprehensive oral examination at 

E.T.C. Dn. James Kuzhivelil became the sports champion of E.T.C this 

year too. Both our first and second year students had their village exposure 

programme as per the curriculum. They spent one and a half 

weeks in a village called Bandy-Mohar, around 20 kms away from 

Satna city. It was enriching and fruitful. Bro. Puthen Chacko presented 

a paper on “Pope John Paul II’s view on Family and Marriage” on the 

occasion of a seminar conducted at E.T.C. He was also elected delegate 

to participate in the 45th NITSC (North Indian Theological Students’ 

Conference) at Kolkotta. 

Obituary 

The beloved mother of our Rector Fr. John Kandathinkara was 

called to her eternal rest on 19th of November after a short period of 

illness. We extend our hearty condolence and prayers. First cousin of 

Bro. Kalluvelil had a tragic death as he slipped from the terrace and 

fell. Your prayers are requested for the repose of the departed souls. 

Annual Retreat 

We joined the E.T.C Brothers for our annual retreat from 22 – 

27 November, which was preached by Frs. James and Tomy from 

MCBS community. It really provided the brothers an occasion to 

recollect about their life and vocation to priesthood. 

One Step More 

We, the Vincentians, together with the seminarians from ETC received 

different orders: Karoyusa, Heupadyakanusa and M’samsanusa 

conferred by His Excellency Mar Mathew Vaniakizhakel on 21st December 

2006. It is a gift of God and fruit of our prayer. We thank 

Rev. Fathers and sisters from Satna and Rewa who were present to 

add colour to the solemnity of the day.

A new year and a new tern are here; and with it ends a beautiful

years as this marked their entry into the training for a new whole life of 

priesthood and consecration to he Lord. As most of us are bound to 

have taken many “New Year Resolutions”; we sincerely hope that we 

will be able to fulfill them and that it does not just remain in the imaginary 

realms of our those ‘gone with the wind’ resolves. 

Christmas Celebrations 

With the burden of the exams lifted off their minds, the brothers 

revelled in the gay atmosphere; merrily preparing for the Christmas 

Celebrations to take place that evening. After a sumptuous lunch; the 

final preparations for the evening Christmas programmes got underway.

would leave for their Christmas vacation the next day. 

Welcoming The ‘Kochachans’ 

When the brothers were visiting their old family members, the 

fathers were busy welcoming their new family members. They were 

out for the Ordinations of “Our new fathers.” 

Personal Visits 

Meanwhile Fr. Rector visited the houses of various brothers, taking 

along with him jokes, fun and a lot of love for everyone. 

New Year’s Here 

The new year was ushered in with gusto. The six brothers doing 

vacation - duty and the fathers celebrated the coming year with joy and 

more importantly with many prayers and thanks giving to our Lord. 

Back at “Home” 

Home is where heart is; and that is true for all of the brothers who 

arrived back on the 6th of January, except Bro. Shinto Kanipalliyil. 

They welcomed each other with a mirth that could have put the greatest 

comedian to shame. 

Rector’s Day 

The 10th of January was a very special day for everyone, because 

it was Fr. Rector’s Birthday. The brother’s, out of their love and 

admiration for him, prepared a wonderful programme, The D’day begun 

with a joyous Holy Mass. It was followed by a delicious spread and 

along with it entertainment, among which the most notable was a comedy 

which literally had some brothers falling off their chairs laughing. It was 

truly a day to cherish. 

English Entrance Exam 

The English entrance exam to be held on the 14th of January, kept 

all the IInd years on edge. What between busily cramming in a few 

more points and last minute revision, they had become as touchy and 

as ready to lash out as an average King Cobra. But we do pray that 

they may come out with flying colours. 

Fr. Thuruthikkat’s Departure 

Two days prior to the entrance, we got news of our beloved Fr. 

Thurithikkat leaving us for ever. So after the entrance exams, we all 

went to pay our homages and respect to one of the most prominent 

sons of Vincentian Congregation. We took part in the Solemn Holy 

Mass and the following funeral services. Good-buy Fr. Thuruthikkat, 

Pray for us from your heavenly abode. 

Feast of St. Sebastian 

The brothers prepared a grand celebration on the occasion of the 

feast of “Fr. Laughter”. They presented a side splitting cartoon mime 

and few other fabulous programmes. Later that day, he had to 

acknowledge that those programmes had been the most cherishable 

moments of his day. 

Off to Evangelize the World 

The second years took a step closer towards the Vincentian motto 

of “Evangelizare Pauperibus” by going for the Popular Mission on the 

21st of January. We pray that it will be a real success. 

Forth Coming Attractions 

All the brothers are on the tip of their toes for the annual picnic 

which promises to be loads of fun. The second years are to go to the 

SSSmile Village, Vettikuzhi on the 3rd of February to spread their 

infectious stock of smiles and give out extra helping of love. 

Last But Not Least 

The annual competitions are going on in full swing with each group 

trying to best each other in this cut-throat competition. Along with this, 

the Rachana work is progressing in giant strides. It is the determination

it out even during free times, to finish it. Fr. James Thoyalil, Fr. Sebastian 

Mappilaparambil and Fr. Martin Kalamparambil dropped by and shared 

a few moments with us. Three of our brothers. Bro. Robin 

Chackachankunnel, Christy Pooranattu, Jins Padinjarethil went back 

on the 22nd of January. We bid them leave with prayers and wishing 

them a happy & successful future. Many a brother was reduced to 

silent tears. 

Mean while, the brother continue their relentless and heroic war 

on the beg-bug Mafia; but they are resting our fierce attacks, no matter 

what we do.

VINCENTIAN ASHRAM, MUNNOORPILLY 

The past two months have been much different in this sleepy village 

Ashram, as they brought fresh enthusiasm with the visits of so 

many of our dear confreres: the new priests – Rev. Frs. James Kuzhively, 

Martin Mundackal, Mathew Muthirakala, Dinny Pandimattam, and Mar 

Mathew Vaniakizhakkel who had raised them to priesthood; almost 

every theologian from our Study House at Kothi along with their caretakers: 

Rev. John Kandathinkara, George Appassery and James 

Mudakodiyil; so many missionaries from MP and UP. The other visitors 

were Rev. Varghese Muzhuthettu, Emmanuel Paliakunnel and 

Sebastian Mappilaparambil. Thanks a lot from the bottom of our hearts! 

As it is the festive and marriage season, the phones keep on ringing 

and our younger priests are always on the move either to absolve at 

the confessionals or to bless at the weddings. Fr. Joseph Vembadanthara 

keeps an eye on the promising candidates, too. 

At the agricultural front the rubber trees are putting on fresh foliage 

and needing rest. The price of rubber is picking up but that of 

coconut is on the decline, while nutmeg keeps steady in spite of low 

production due to the prolonged monsoon. In the dairy farm the cattle 

cry for green grass but the rain-clouds have a keep-off stand as they 

had given much in the previous months. Cow-dung is being bought for 

the plantation. 

The Minor Seminarians enjoyed a break of 10 days at home during 

Christmas. They came back in time to accord a warm reception to 

the new priests. On the 12 th of January 18 new priests and Very Rev. 

Fr. James Kallumkal, the Silver Jubilarian, blessed us from our altar. It 

was grand, a day of great joy, and the Seminarians showed off their 

young talents in enthusing the esteemed guests. “Give us more opportunities”, 

they say. Therefore we are very grateful to all those benign 

hearted to have obliged us with their esteemed presence. Come again!

Fr. James Manithara Still lives in our hearts 

It was a great shock to us, to hear the news about the death of 

Rev. Fr. James Manithara. We do remember his love and concern 

towards us. He was a good friend and elder brother to all of us. We 

still remember his loving call “Suhruthe”. It was a touching calling. 

His simple life was very much impressive for us. He was spiritual 

father to some seminarians. 

Academic life 

We have finished our first semester wonderfully. All of us did 

well in the first semester. Our younger brothers Mathukutty 

Naduchirayil, Jilson valiyaparambil and Shaiju Mulayinkal have done 

well in their academic curriculum and also they have soon accustomed 

with the diversity of Tangaza College. Our present third years Joby 

Kalathil and Santhosh Thekkekulam are busy with their long essay 

works and studies. Bros. Raphael Karalathukarn and Jomesh 

Kaithamana are little free in this semester. 

Farewells to our Elder Brothers 

Fr. Philip Thayil 

We really miss Fr. Philip Thayil, especially all the theology students 

of Tangaza college. He was really an asset in the Biblical departments 

of Tangaza College. His impressive personality helped him to get many 

friends from different nationalities. His classes were very much 

appreciated by all of them. Really Fr. Philip Thayil brought a good 

reputation for Vincentians in Tangaza College. Fr.Philip Thayil left Kenya 

in December. 

Deacons 

Our respected Deacons Saji (Antony) Vadekkemuriyil and Biju 

(Varghese) Moonjely have finished there studies at Tangaza. By this 

time Deacon Saji became Priest, and we wish all the best in his priestly 

life. Deacon Biju is doing his deaconate ministry in Tanzania; his ordination 

will be in April. They were great support for us in all means. 

We really miss them. 

Apostolate 

We are doing pastoral works in different places around. We are 

helping mainly in the parishes and hospital. Usually we start pastoral 

on Saturday and by Sunday everybody is supposed to be back. Every 

second Saturday, we go to help at Prayer House for the retreat. 

This year we have conducted some Jesus Missions during holidays 

and weekends. Usually we do it in Boarding schools and parishes. 

Every night we all gather for our common prayers, it helps us to keep 

the Vincentian spirit alive among us. 

Proud to be Indian 

In Tangaza College we Vincentians showed our presence not 

only in academic but also in other activities too. On cultural day, we 

contributed in presenting Indian cultural programme together with other 

students from India. It was very much appreciated by all. 

Sports 

We are keeping up the sports spirit. Usually at least once in a 

week we go for cricket at University court. Other days we play volleyball 

and basketball. Brothers Kalathil and Naduchirayil are the 

official team members of Tangaza College and Bro. Shaiju Mulayinkal 

is the demanded volleyball player for the University. The sports help 

us to keep our body healthy.

Free Retreats 

This is an innovation in the Spiritual World... Retreats throughout 

the year free of charge... From 2007 onwards our centre is preaching 

the Word of God free of charge. We started this spiritual harvest with 

the financial support and prayers of some local benefactors and people 

of God. Please do support this new beginning with your prayers. 

Night Vigils 

Many are attending night vigil prayers both in Tamil and English. 

Free bus service started from the city to our centre to help people in 

the night vigil. 

Preparation for the Divine Mercy Feast and First Elavur National 

Bible Convention 

Preparation started already for the Divine mercy feast and first 

Elavur National Bible Convention. We have already formed the core 

committees for the Convention. Rev. Fr. George Panakal VC and team 

will be leading the Convention in the month of April please do pray for

Thanks to your prayers and support, the new Mission in the North 

East is making a steady progress. Our preaching and evangelization 

works are going on very smoothly and God is doing wonderful things 

through His humble servants. 

Bible Convention and Healing Service 

A Bible Convention and Healing Service was conducted on 9, 10, 

11 February, 2007. The convention was held from 09.00 a.m. to 05.00 

p.m. everyday at the site for Divine Love Retreat Centre, Jalalkhali. 

The charismatic team from Patna led the Convention. A Salesian priest 

from Kolkotta also joined the team from Patna. The Arch Bishop of 

Kolkotta and the Bishop of Krishnagar blessed us with their presence 

and preaching. About 5000 people took part in the Convention each 

day. Meals was prepared and served for this multitude on all the three 

days. What was most surprising was that it did not rain here after 7th February. Although there were heavy downpours in most other areas 

of the state it did not rain here on any of the three days. 

VINCENTIAN MISSION, PENUBALLY 

The arrival of Rev. Frs. Joseph Erambil, Jose Panachimoottil and 

Martin Palatty was a matter of joy both for the parishioners and for the 

parish priest. Since it was a Sunday, the parishioners could take part in 

the concelebrated holy mass. The visiting fathers addressed the people 

and their messages were translated by Fr. Augustine Thuluvath. 

Christmas carol service was conducted in five villages from 19 th 

December onwards, each day in a village. Almost all the people cooperated. 

The church was full on Christmas day. Solo competition and 

children’s dance programme were arranged after the midnight mass. 

On the New Year eve we spend one hour in adoration from 11 p.m. It 

was followed by H. Mass. The participation of the faithful was very good.

Greetings to all 

The warmest wishes of Christmas and New Year from Vincentian 

house, Chengam. May the Infant Jesus bless you all abundantly. 

Canonical Visit 

Very Rev. Fr. Jose Vettiyankal, Provincial Superior and Rev. Fr. 

Sebastian Thundathikunnel, Provincial Econome came here for 

Canonical Visit on 23rd of November. They appreciated the members 

of the House for their service and planned for the future developmental 

programs and that day was the day of joy for everyone. Thank you for 

their kind visit. 

New Member 

Time had gone when we were two. Now we are having a new 

member. Bro. Xavier Anthony Samy, after completing his theological 

studies at St. Paul’s Seminary, Trichy, has come here for his deaconate 

ministry. He was installed as the member of the house on 23rd Nov. 

He is doing his ministry well. 

Wish him Speedy recovery..... 

At last it has come to an end. Yes, Fr. Xavier Kadiyamkuttiyil 

had a plan to get his right eye operated for cataract for long time. He 

underwent cataract operation on 12th Dec. at ALC Eye Hospital, 

Chengam. Then he stayed here for one and a half week and had a fine 

rest here and hope he enjoyed his time here. On 19th of December, 

Fr. Sabu Kalappurayil and Fr. Abraham Orathel came and took Fr. 

Xavier Kadiyamkuttiyil back to Adaikalapuram house. They reached 

home safely. 

Christmas Celebration 

We had Christmas celebration in our school on 22nd of Dec. 

evening after completing half yearly examination. Then school was 

closed for 10 days of vacation. Again we celebrated Christmas with 

our boarding children on 24th of Dec. and after the celebration they all 

left for Christmas Holidays. 

New Office Room for Parish Priest 

For long time parish priest had no special room as an office. Now 

one of the rooms in the Vincentain house has been converted as the 

office of parish priest. Fr. Raphael blessed the Room and officially entered 

into the office. This place helps the parishioners to have comfortable 

personal talk with parish priest. 

Christmas Carol 

In order to prepare the people for Christmas a team under the 

guidance of Parish priest went for Christmas carols to all the catholic 

families of Chengam Parish. 

People invited Baby Jesus into their families and we wish them 

blessing of infant Jesus and joyful Christmas and Bright New Year. 

One Day Retreat 

Shepherds heard the good news from the angels. Our Chengam 

Parishioners got the chance to hear the good news. As part of the 

Christmas preparation, the Parish Priest has arranged one day Retreat 

for the Parishioners. Many people took part in it and tasted the blessings 

of the word of God. Fr. Mariadas, the parish priest of Elayankanni 

preached the retreat. 

Sound and light program 

This year Chengam Parish celebrated Christmas with a different 

style. The Parish Priest, the youth of the parish and the students of our 

boarding joining together and produced a sound and light program basing 

on the events of the birth of Christ. Many people from nearby parishes 

and people belonging to other Christian denominations too came and 

enjoyed the program. Many of the local political leaders like Councillors,

Chairman of Chengam town, and District Chairman of Panchayat Union 

of Tiruvannamalai were present for the program. About 20 of our 

boarding students took active participation by displaying their dancing 

and acting skills in this spectacular event. Many appreciated the program

of hard work done by the Parish Priest and his parish youth team.

De Paul School’s 23rd academic session is coming to a close 

with the final assessment and board exams. There are 92 students in 

class X and 86 in class XII on the rolls. Patron’s day was celebrated 

befittingly with a variety of items this year. On 23rd December, we 

had a colourful celebration of the Nativity of Jesus. The School remained 

closed from Dec.24-Jan.2. De Paul K.G. Section brought 

their dormant talents to the lime light on Annual day celebration held 

on Jan.19. The 58th republic day of the nation was observed in the 

school premises with the hoisting of the Tri-colour and other festivities. 

At the moment students are deeply immersed in studies as the 

annual exam is round the corner. 

St.Vincent’s Church is ever vibrant with spiritual fervour. Immediately 

after the parish day celebrations, the new parish council has 

been formed. Christmas carols and other church services were wellorganized 

and well-attended too. Being the Family Year, visits, family 

prayers and renewal programme have been chalked out and have 

already begun with. Church gate and adjoining premises give a fine 

look with proper up-keep as well as painting. 

Fr.Biju attended in the last batch of the annual retreat held at 

Generalate from Dec.10-17. Visits of Bishop Mathew, Bishop Isidor 

Fernandez ( Allahabad ) Rev.Fr.Provincial, Frs. Joseph Keezhedam, 

George Jose Vempilly and Jose Panamattam are acknowledged with 

thanks. 

DIST - ANGAMALY 

Study Programme For American Students 

With an aim at providing an international exposure to the students, 

De Paul Institute of Science & Technology (DIST) joined hands 

with De Paul University, Chicago, U.S.A, to organize at DIST a threeweek 

study programme on Public Service Management. The 

programme hatched an opportunity for both DIST and US students to 

swap and swallow cultural and linguistic characteristics of both coun- 

tries. During their study programme here, De Paul University students 

were given indoor and outdoor classes including the visit of different 

government, non-government and business organizations. The 

programme, which commenced on 4th December 2007, concluded 

on 15th December 2007. 

Hardware Exhibition “EXSYS’ 2006” Conducted 

With an eye at making an infallible intrusion into the intricacies of 

Computer Hardware thereby giving the public an unlimited opportunity 

to perceive and comprehend the functional components of a computer, 

an Exhibition and workshop christened EXSYS’2006 was initiated 

by De Paul Institute of Science & Technology (DIST) and conducted 

at DIST on 8th December 2006 in association with Angamaly 

Municipality. Ward Councilor Sri. T.M. Agusthikutty inaugurated the 

exhibition in the presence of DIST principal Fr. Alex Chalangady. 

Christmas Celebrated 

De Paul Institute of Science & Technology (DIST) celebrated Christmas 

in a splendid way. The Christmas celebration started at 9.30.a.m.on 

22nd December 2007 with a Holy Mass performed by a group of priests 

in the leadership of DIST finance officer Fr. Daison Vettiyadan VC. At a 

public meeting organized after the Holly Mass, DIST principal gave Christmas 

message to the students and staff and cut the Christmas cake that was 

later distributed among the students and staff. 

Union Inaugurated 

The inauguration of newly constituted college union and oath taking 

of its office bearers was held at DIST auditorium at 10.00.a.m.on 5 th 

February 2007. Hon. M.P. Sri. Lonappan Nampadan performed the 

inauguration of the college Union. In his inaugural speech Sri. 

Nampadan held forth on the decadence happening in modern education 

and appealed to the students not to be oblivious of three Ms; Mother, 

Mother Land and Mother Tongue. Fr. Alex Chalangady administrated 

oath to the newly elected office bearers of the college union. Fr. Thomas

FROM THE FOUNTAIN OF PRAYER 

“See, the home of God is among mortals (Rev 21:3)” 

Prayerful greetings of joy and happiness from Vincentian 

Novitiate, Meenagadi. Here, in Wayanad, the climate is chill now adays. 

But we keep the prayerful atmosphere of the house alive and we 

feel the warmth of it in every breath. Eventhough the cold sheds the 

leaves of trees, adds charming beauty pleases to the minds. Sometimes 

we can hear the painful mourning of the land.... Wondered? For water, 

nothing else. Still, the birds singing songs early in the morning, that 

make us rising. 

An Eye Opening 

We were blessed with the visit of Rev. Fr. Anto Kannampuzha 

along with two brothers from Divine retreat centre. We attended two 

talks by them. Bro. Joy led us to adore God in our daily life, by talking 

to us his life-bared experiences. Fr. Anto pin-pointed by saying what 

is your identity in the world today. Everyone should have a ‘Thanima’, 

he stressed on. It was a beautiful experience for all of us. We are 

grateful to him for his great mind and heart for spending his precious 

time with us, novices. 

What thanks O Lord can I render Thee? 

Christmas brings to this world a cordial atmosphere and this 

was truly evaluated and experienced here. And to foster Christ Jesus 

into this world, the novices had prepared a beautiful crib for our Lord 

to take birth. The labour the brothers put forth in the crib was rewarded 

by the people through the words of appreciation. And on the Christmas 

Eve, a solemn mass was celebrated by our Guruvachan, Rev. Fr. Davis. 

His message gave a new enlightenment to the hearts of many. After the 

mass, we spent our time in singing carols and enjoying fire works. Fr. 

Thomas gave us a grand dinner to add to the joy of Christmas. 

Puthu Raga Pakshikal 

Many of us wanted our ‘New Year’ day to be welcomed in a 

special way and it should be the best way on its account. On its behalf, 

we conducted one hour adoration, led by Fr. Guru and then bid fare 

well to 2006. And welcomed the New Year with new year prayers, 

followed by solemn mass offered by Fr. Thomas. 

Blessed Lives 

The heavenly choir also joined with the rhythmic music of the 

Novitiate house on 30th of December. Because, it was just in the last 

year, God invited Fr. Thomas and Fr. Binoy to take part in his eternal 

priesthood, and to earnestly follow his foot prints. On that special day, 

the whole community had an obvious share in their happiness. And we 

would like to say that they are holding up his expectation in a lofty and 

fabulous way. 

And it was with immense joy we celebrate the Birthday of Fr. 

Thomas on 2nd January. During that finest occasion, the whole house 

was smiling at him with a cheerful whisper ‘You are ours’. The loving 

presence of Fr. Mekkattu George, Fr. Mankuthel Thomas and Madam 

Massae from France doubled the sweetness of the day. 

A Mountain Experience 

On 10th January, we had gone to ‘Edackal Caves’, was a 

thrilling experience having enjoyed very much. Under the leadership of 

Fr. Guru and Fr. Binoy, we climbed up the hill in the morning. We really 

felt wonder about the mighty creation of God when we were at the top 

of the hill. By the time we came down, Fr. Thomas was ready with 

delicious food. Now, we also acknowledge as Keats says “A thing of 

beauty is a joy for ever.”. 

Lighted up to light up 

January 15th was a memorable day for the community. Due 

flavour added by the new priests to make it a remarkable one. All the

newly ordained priests of Mary Matha Province and Fr. Mundackal 

Martin of St. Thomas Province, Fr. Joseph Kodakkathanathu of 

St.Joseph Province were present that day. The energetic and zealous 

priests celebrated Holy Mass in the evening, really enkindled our minds. 

Before that a volley ball match was conducted between new priests 

and novices, indeed a cut-throat competition. Everybody really enjoyed 

the cherished moments in their presence. We do thank them and wish 

them every success in their life.

We have great pleasure to open our news box for our Family 

Bond readers. During this new year season we have lot of news to 

share with you. 

Christmas & New Year Celebration 

We celebrated Christmas in a grand manner. On the Christmas 

day fathers celebrated Holy Mass in different stations. Presence of Fr. 

Mathew Kunnel helped, us to arrange spiritual banquet on the Christmas 

day. 

We also celebrated new year in a moderate manner. Frs. Paul and 

John offered Holy Mass on that day in our parish church. Before the 

Holy Mass we remembered all the blessings that god has given us in 

2006 and sought the blessings of God for the coming year. We 

welcomed new year with divine blessings. 

Ordinations 

Fr. Janson went to Kerala during the Christmas season. Along 

with other programmes he took part in two ordinations. By participating 

in the ordinations he showed the love and concern of Karivena 

vincentain family to newly ordained priests. 

Loss of a great friend 

20th morning we received a shocking news from Kurnool Bishop’s 

house, informing us the sudden death of His Excellency Dr. Johannus 

Bishop of Kurnool. He was a great friend for all of us. He was always 

ready to give advice and guidance in our activities. He showed special 

interest in our pastoral and educational activities. The death of Rt. Rev. 

Dr. Johannus is a great lose for vincentians of Kurnool diocese. As 

part of mourning we declared a holyday on 22nd. Frs.Paul, John and 

Francis from our community and as a representative of superior general 

Rev. Fr. Francis Naduviladath, for the Good Shephered Region, reginal 

superior Rev Fr. John Kallatil and Rev. Fr. John Puthussery also took 

part in funeral service. 

On 30th Fr. John Karukappilly took part in memorial mass at 

Bishop’s house Kurunool. 

Depaul School 

To have the joy of Christmas, on 23rd, we conducted Christmas 

celebration. There were a number of speeches, Melodious Christmas 

carol and other cultural programmes conducted. School temporarily 

closed for Christmas vacation. On the re-opening day we had a simple 

New Year celebration. 

School Annual Day 

After a long preparation, on 26th we celebrated our school annual 

day. Nearly 5000 people attended the function. Through melodious 

songs, colourful dances and thoughtful skits our students presented a 

colourful evening to the audience. The variety and time shedule of the

inaugurated the celebrations. A number of eminent personalities took

Pastoral Activities 

With smiling face Fr. John is doing the pastoral activities. A number 

of constructions are going on in different stations and main church. 

With great enthusiasm and energy Fr. John is engaged in different 

spiritual activities to strengthen the faith of his sheep.

FR. JOSEPH, THE KEEPER OF OUR 

CONSCIENCE 

Fr. Joseph Thuruthikatt, the 

eldest member of the Congregation 

left us all, for his eternal reward, 

sad to say, in the absence of any 

member of the Congregation at 

4.30 p.m. on 13 th Jan. 2007, in the 

L.F Hospital, Angamaly at the age 

of 94. Several times, he was in and 

out of the hospital, as his health was 

slowly declining. There had been 

ups and downs. He used to say, 

“My body looks to be a burden to 

my soul”. But every time he came

out of the hospital, he looked more 

fresh and healthier. The wonder 

is during the past years of 

sufferings due to old age and 

deseases, he never lost 

consciousness at any time 

whatsoever. He was mentally alert 

all throughout these convalescent 

years, reading, writing, attending 

the community exercises, visiting 

the Blessed Sacrament every now 

and then. 

I think that in almost 

everything that is related to gis lifepattern, 

health, prayer life, reading 

programme, his time-table letter 

writing, visits with others, rituals, 

visits to the Blessed Sacrament he 

had a system and regularity of his 

own, a habit he slowly and 

conscientiously formed from selftraining 

from the early days of his 

religious and priestly life. In all that 

we see a steadiness all troughout. 

His was a unique and inimitable 

style. 

Fr. Thuruthikatt was the last 

link of the first generation of 

priests of the Congregation. He 

happens to be the first of the 

priests who received full training 

under the auspices of the infant 

Congregation together with Fr. 

Jacob Kallarackal, his colleague. 

Fr. Thuruthikatt was born in 

Nedumbrakkatt of the parish of 

Muttam, Cherthala in 1912, by 

two years elder to Kallarackal. 

They studied, underwent the 

novitiate in 1941 – 42 under Fr. 

Pauvathil and were ordained 

together in 1941. Both of them 

could be counted two of the 

greatest contributors of the 

Congregation each, in his own 

way. Both of them were in the 

training and administrative fields 

of the Congregation. 

Parish Apostolate 

I feel proud to have come 

across Fr. Thuruthikatt just from 

the year 1941 when he was 

ordained. I was only 11 at that 

time. Soon he was appointed in 

the Angamaly House mainly in 

charge of the church. I remember 

him as a zealous young priest, 

making house to house visits 

together with and without Fr. 

Antony Chiramel (Vadakan 

Anthonyachan, who joined the 

Congregation at that time after 

having a prestigious record of 

service in many parishes of the 

Arch diocese of Ernakulam). 

They were together in the 

novitiate. Fr. Thuruthikatt was 

doing whatever he could do for 

the welfare of the faithful. He got 

familiar with almost all catholic 

families in the locality as a 

Vincentian missionary should be. 

The frequent visits of the first 

Vincetian among the faithful of 

Angamaly was in reality a fresh 

experience for the people of those

days because the churches were so 

few in such an extensive catholic 

area. For example, the Angamaly 

Forane covered so many square 

miles and the paish priest found it 

so hard to reach out to distant areas 

of the parish. The parishes of 

Karayamparambu, Peechanikad, 

Kavaraparambu, South and North 

Champannur, Mekkad, 

Chengamanad and Josepuram were 

all established as parishes after very 

many years only. ‘Champannur 

Koventha’ was catering to the 

spiritual needs of the faithful of most 

of these even without proper church 

but a temporary shed. It is the zeal, 

courage and dedicated service of 

the first members like Fr. 

Thuruthikatt that kept the lamp of 

faith burning for so many years. 

Certainly, Frs. Kallarackal and 

Thuruthikatt had a lion’s share in 

shaping the faithful, almost fully and 

sowing the seed of vocation. In one 

word Fr. Thuruthikatt was zeal 

incarnate. No doubt, it is the 

inspiration and spirit that he 

humbled from St. Vincent that 

prompted him to carry the torch to 

many a parish that he served 

relentlessly, during his youthful years 

in the Archdiocese of Ernakulam 

in the south and Tellichery 

diocese in the north. 

Parish Ministry, an Expedition 

His parish ministry was really an 

expedition. His parish ministry 

included Angamaly Forane, 

Kacheripady, Parur, Kumbalam 

and some other churches of the 

Arch diocese of Ernakulam and 

there in Vazhavatta, Sultan 

Battery and some other churches 

of Tellichery diocese. The 

parishes and missions were 

mostly occupied by immigrants 

from the south. In many parishes, 

he had to begin from temporary 

sheds for worship, primary 

schools and dispensary such as 

in Vazhavatta. He was one who 

was ready to take risks in his 

ministry. His apostolate had 

always been whole hearted and 

total as his nature was. He had to 

face many a hurdle during his 

ministry with regard to his health 

and finance. His body was so 

fragile, teeth bad, stomach poor. 

All his teeth were extracted while 

quite young. He had to undergo 

surgeries too for piles, prostrate 

glands etc. We may wonder how 

he out-lived all these ailments and 

in spite of his weak constitution, 

how he could manage with himself 

and live longer than any other 

member. The secret is clear when 

we consider the scrupulous care 

he cherished in food habits and 

regularity of daily life. Many of us 

have noted while on the dining 

table, the dissections, 

combinations and ablutions in the 

use of specific food materials. He 

used to eat selectively only. The 

food habits as in everything else 

he did there was sort of 

meticulous care. 

Return from the Parish Ministry 

and Various Jobs in the 

Houses 

Fr. Thuruthikatt, coming 

away from pastoral ministry, there 

was almost a total break for him 

from direct apostolate in the 

parishes. Afterwards he was 

serving in our Houses at 

Thottakom, Kaloor, Pachalam 

etc. as superior and 

procurator.More than all that, the 

rest of his life was set apart to a 

great extent for the formation of 

our novices for six years, novices 

of C.S.T Congregation, C.S.N 

Sisters, Vincentian Sisters of 

Manathavady, hailing from 

German background and finally of 

the Preshitharam Sisters founded 

by the saintly Fr. George 

Kochuparambil and that for many 

many years until was 87 or so. That 

does not mean that he kept away 

from the activities of the 

Congregation. He had always 

been a moral force and the 

conscience of the Congregation. 

He was twice one of the 

Councillors General of the 

Congregation. 

A Model for the Members 

In nut shell, we can rightly 

conclude that Fr. Thuruthikatt 

loved the Congregation and its 

members deeply. As one of the 

pioneers of the Congregation, he 

had to be a guide and model to 

the members. The moral rectitude, 

spirit of St. Vincent, prestine spirit 

of the Congregation, mutuality, 

faithfulness in keeping the rules, 

conviction that everyone is equal 

before law were all being 

emphasized by him, setting an 

example before others. He could 

not tolerate any alteration or 

aberrations in that line. Often he

dared to rectify the defects noted, 

sometimes on the face itself. He 

could do so without fear because 

he was a man of faith, of strict 

discipline and unalloyed spirituality. 

He meant what he said and did what 

he meant. 

Always a Student and Voracious 

Reader 

He was all his life a learner, a 

student. He never misspent time. 

Perhaps he read books, magazines, 

weeklies both in English and 

Malayalam and jotted down in red ink 

the important and specific points that 

came to his notice and captured his 

attention. He read not only spiritual 

and religious books but also other 

subjects too, elaborately. He was 

convinced that every priest should be 

a man of wide knowledge, conversant 

with modern topics, history, sciences, 

medicine and all that a priest should 

be up-to-date in. 

It is with that end in view that 

he kept a collection of books on 

variety of topics. Those collections 

is bound to be an asset for the 

coming generations in case they 

realize the wealth of knowledge they 

contain. When he came to know 

about new books published even in 

foreign countries, he was on the 

look out for their arrival. He used 

to get down from his pen-friends 

and benefactors in America such 

mighty volumes through them. 

A Collector of Books, Both 

Local and Foreign 

The New Catholic Encyclopedia 

(18 volumes) which deal with 

almost all subjects in detail is 

being kept in the recreation hallof 

the Provincial House at 

Angamaly. Another valuable 

collection of some 12 volumes is 

Hortus Malabaricus (Malabar 

Garden) which treats in detail the 

wonderful medicinal plants of the 

Malabar Coast which has its 

origin during the time of the 

Portuguese. Fr. Thuruthikatt 

found enough money to purchase 

those volumes. It is certainly as 

asset for interested people. It 

would be a great help, even for 

research work. 

Generous and Sympathetic 

Fr. Thuruthikatt had been 

always generous, sympathetic 

towards those in need. He used 

to help many only secretly. The 

sick and the homeless, have 

benefited from his sympathy and 

goodwill. As he hailed from a rich 

family back ground, he got a share 

of his ancestral properties from 

there, not with the purpose of 

spending for his personal ends but 

for noble causes. A part of it went 

to our different Houses, the 

income of which was to be made 

use of for various spiritual 

intentions, like saying masses for 

the dead or for some specific 

purposes. I remember with 

gratitude the donation of a sizeable 

amount he extended for the first 

publication of my book ‘Vincent 

de Paul’ in 1970. 

Just two years ago, a servant 

who was assisting him for almost 

an year was sent here from Divine. 

He had come here laden with 

heavy debt and on the point of 

suicide. His property and even 

house was mortgaged and under 

suit. He was in Bombay for several 

years and incurred debit of many 

lakhs of rupees. His attempt for 

suicide engendered pity on Fr. 

Thuruthikatt for the young man. 

He collected a few thousands of 

rupees and asked me to do 

everything possible to save him 

from the precarious condition. Fr. 

Thuruthikatt’s insistence and 

goodwill in his favour bore fruit 

and he could be sent to Kuwait 

for a job as a driver. Thus a family 

of five members could be saved 

from disaster. 

For the Uplift of the Congregation 

The projects and welfare of 

the Congregation was always 

uppermost in his mind. Fr. 

Thuruthikatt worked two years in 

Germany in connection with the 

direction and training of the 

Vincentian Sisters from Kerala. 

There he had in mind a project of 

collecting a fund for conducting 

the Popular Mission in parish free 

of charge. Although he was unable 

to activity participate in the direct 

field, Fr. Thuruthikatt was able to 

gain a good rolling fund for that 

purpose with the help of the 

Archbishop of Paderborn in 

Germany. 

Spreading Various Devotions 

Fr. Thuruthikatt was intent 

since a pretty long time, to spread 

among the people different 

devotions. He earnestly and

systematically used to spread the 

devotion of the Sacred Heart of 

Mercy through the length and 

breadth of the country. A number 

of volunteers, inspired by him, are 

engaged in spreading this devotion 

since many years. Several times, 

he has got printed and published 

lakhs of copies of different sizes 

of the picture of our Lord of 

Mercy and prayer books. He was 

a devotee of the Rosary of fmercy 

too and was distributing booklets 

of the same. 

A Writer 

Fr. Thuruthikatt is a writer too. He 

has translated one booklet on St. 

Vincent de Paul ‘Pavangalude 

Pithavu’ and the life history of Sr. 

Euprasia. 

Serious Outlook on Life 

Useless amusement and 

entertainments were alien to his 

lifestyle. From early days onwards 

he was the type of a person who 

looked at life seriously. For him life 

is a preparation for eternity and he 

got ample time to prepare himself 

for a happy death. He calmly faced 

death. The words of St. Philip Neri 

he used to quote, “This life is not 

to be thrashed away. There is 

only one life. Whether we 

succeed or fail there is no return 

back to this life again. God sees 

us, God hears us, God knows 

us”. 

A Little Emotional but Sincere 

Because of his bit emotional 

nature, his enthusiasm sometimes 

overflowed; it might have caused 

pain to some. But nobody 

doubted his sincerity and good 

intention. He always wanted to 

call a spade a spade. Once he 

understood that his words caused 

a little offense for some he rushed 

to his feet to beg pardon and 

would not leave unless he got 

assurance. He took corrections 

in a spirit of humility. Besides, as 

the seniormost member and one 

of the pioneers of the 

Congregation, he deemed it his 

duty to correct the deviations that 

have crept in the Congregation by 

way of affluence, carelessness 

etc. and keep the society in its 

pristine spirit. Whatever might 

have been the net result of it all 

there was sincerety and courage, 

good intention in his direct 

encounters. He never believed in 

the so-called diplomacy. True, 

sometimes his proposals were 

more subjective than objective. He 

used to extent personal corrections 

too by way of letters. Following 

the example and words of St. 

Vincent he felt that correction is a 

sine qua non, in a community. 

Otherwise, according to him the 

members are kept in the dark not 

knowing where the trouble is. He 

had always been scrupulously 

ready in offering himself to the 

corrections of the superiors. 

A Man of Details 

I hinted above that Fr. 

Thuruthikatt was always, orderly, 

systematic, grateful to the point of 

scrupulosity, careful to details and 

sympathetic. There was room for 

everything in his daily time-table. 

He was essentially a man of details. 

Even what looked silly for others, 

it was important for him. Whether 

it was a member of the 

Congregation, or a superior, even 

a servant who approached him for 

something, he treated each one 

adequately. Sensitivity to reality is 

what kept him keen to every one 

and everything. That is why he was 

faithful even in little things always. 

When his room was examined after 

his expiry, it was found that every 

little thing, kept in his room was 

specified and wrapped up and tied, 

name of each packet was inscribed 

clearly with its destination so that 

they could be disposed off easily. 

Even the devil should be given his 

due was the principle of Fr. 

Thuruthikatt. 

Concern for the Congregation 

He had respect and love for 

the members of our Congregatrion 

as well as for the sisters of the 

Congregations he served. He knew 

each one by name; in case he 

forgets it, he would renew his 

memory occasionally. Even in his 

extreme old age, he wanted to visit 

the old and new houses, 

disregarding the inconvenience and 

illness and renew friendships. In 

return, the members, sisters and lay 

people were in the habit of visiting 

him back frequently as occasions 

arose. The benefactors of the 

Cogregation were his own friends. 

His spirit of gratitude like that of 

St. Vincent, was a strong sentiments 

for him and he was always for 

strengthening cordiality with them.

Memory did not Fail 

Even to the last days of his life 

his memory was not very much 

fading. Only a few hours before he 

expired I could minimally 

communicate with him in the 

hospital. 

A Number of Friends 

Fr. Thuruthikatt had always 

been a warm conversionalist and 

an attentive listener too. That is why 

a good number of priests, nuns and 

lay people approached him for 

spiritual guidance for many many 

years. They always considered him 

a man of God, man of prayer. He 

was one who could appreciate 

whatever is good in others without 

reserve. 

A Historian 

Fr. Thuruthikatt in a sense, was 

an historian, expecially of the 

Vincentian Congregation. As I 

wrote he had been a connecting 

link with the past of the 

congregation. He had definite views 

about the founder of the 

Congregation and its humble 

beginnings. He had, at his disposal 

certain proofs and documents 

about all that to prove the variety 

of his statements. We can take 

those statements into account 

because he was an impartial 

observer and eye-witness of all 

the important events of the 

Congregation. He had seen and 

communicated with everyone 

except the founder. He never 

imposed his views. He loved the 

Congregation and wanted the 

truth to triumph. Thus he could 

be a silent reconciliator, many a 

time on such important issues. 

Fr. Thuruthikatt and the 

Vincentian Sisters 

We must remember that Fr. 

Thruthikatt was responsible for 

bringing down to Kerala the 

Vincentian Sisters (Kerala off 

Germany knitting several different 

groups of the Vincentians together 

into one Congregation and 

chalking out a Common Rules for 

them in an Indian Context. He 

launched them into the path of 

speedy growth. As a prelude to 

it he stayed with their 

Communties for two years in 

Germany giving training and 

direction to them. 

Preshitharam Sisters 

Another achievement in his 

relationship with sisters, is 

connected with Preshitharam 

Sisters founded by the revered 

Fr. George Kochuparambil and 

never nurtured by Fr. George 

Kammattil. Fr. Thuruthicatt took 

charge as their Novice Master 

even before their saintly founder 

bade farewell to the sisters and 

the world. Very great is the 

contribution by Fr. Thuruthikatt 

for their advancement and all 

round growth. As far as I know, 

he was to some extent 

instrumental in their material 

progress also. At present the 

Congregation has almost 

reached a full fledged growth by 

the unflinching efforts of these 

Trio, of very many years. 

Steadiness and persistence 

was a special characteristic of his 

very nature. He never gave up. 

He did not want anything to be 

done by halves. He aimed at 

some sort of perfection in all that 

he did. His writing letters point 

out this reality. The alphebets 

were so artitistic, legible and 

equai-distant without unnessary 

curves. 

A Man of Prayer, Man of God 

Over and above, Fr. 

Thuruthikatt was known as a man 

of prayer. He gave primacy of 

place to mental and vocal prayer. 

Towards the last few years, be 

had converted his time into a 

continuous act of prayer, so to say. 

His lips were almost always found 

moving reciting ejaculations of his 

choice. He had his own particular 

style for all types of prayer, 

whether mental or vocal. 

Everyday, a certain time was set 

apart for mental prayer and that 

too in the chapel. That was a real 

edification for all who came with 

contact with him. Their had been 

a number of papers, booklets of 

prayers which he used for daily 

personal recital for various 

intentions. He treasured them all 

using them all according to his 

needs. I said he was spreading 

these devotion, by books, 

pamphlets and pious pictures. 

During the free time he knew how 

to use properly.

Fr. Thuruthikatt and Souls in 

Purgatory 

Devotion for the souls in 

purgatory was a regular practice 

of his. He considered it an 

obligation to pray for those who 

were the deceased members of our 

congregation. He had kept a 

special album about them, with 

their pictures, mementoes and the 

date of their expiry. So with his 

classmates and relatives. 

Intercessary prayers for those in 

need, in sin, the sickly and the 

suffering, those in death-bed was 

compulsory habit for him. Always 

he had been a piety - oriented 

religious. 

Excelsior 

‘Excelsior’, “better and 

better” was his motto. Fr. 

Thuruthikatt was always in search 

of better life. In his search for that 

he vacillated a little for sometime 

ago as regards the choice he made. 

He proposed to join another 

indegenous religious community of 

Kerala. His difficulty was the 

concept that Vincentian has only 

private vows and therefore, they 

are not religious. After much 

deliberation and thought he 

dropped the idea, finding that it 

is to Vincetian Congregation he 

was called and it amply satisfied 

his spiritual aspirations. It is when 

the second novitiate in the 

congregation was conducted in 

1951-52 by Fr. Fernando CM 

from Spain that he came to 

understand that ours is a totally 

apostolic congregation after the 

model of the spirit of St. Vincent 

who imbibed classical motto 

presented by St. Dominic in 13th 

Century. “Contemplari et 

contemplata alus tradex” 

(Contemplate and hand over to 

others what is contemplated) Fr. 

Thuruthikatt said that he never 

after experienced any 

disturbance in that line. 

Fr. Thuruthikatt who lived 

for 94 years in this world and 

completed 66 years of 

priesthood slept in the Lord, 

peacefully having bequeathed to 

the coming generation a legacy 

of Vicentian Spirituality and 

austerity, of prayers, love, 

sincerity, generosity, friendship 

and authenticity. He will 

intercede in heaven for us, his 

dear ones here on earth.
