Introduction
YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR ―DRAGONS’ DEN STYLE‖ COMPETITION
The winners of the Young Entrepreneur Dragons’ Den 2012 Competition will be announced
tonight. The competition, now in its 18th year, is for students in Grades 7 to 12 and is a joint
initiative between the Central Okanagan Economic Development Commission, School
District No. 23 Career Life Programs, and Okanagan College School of Business.
QHR TECHNOLOGIES INC. is the PLATINUM AND GOLD SPONSOR of this event.
With the Central Okanagan having one of the highest rates of entrepreneurship in Canada, the aim of
the program is to provide youth in our community with hands-on learning experiences while creating
excitement towards the topic of entrepreneurship.
Schools entered in teams of 1 to 5 students with a record 76 teams signing up to compete. (Last year
58 teams entered the competition.) As in previous years, the students had to complete three tasks
to show the judges the feasibility of their business idea:
Task #1: Create their Product or Service;
Task #2: Create and develop a Marketing and Promotion Plan;
Task #3: Complete a Financial Plan which includes costing, pricing,
sales forecasting, profit projections and concepts.
Students began to work hard on their business ideas in February. Teams were judged throughout
the competition by business professionals (the ―Dragons‖) from many areas of the community.
Out of the 76 teams that started in the competition, 60 teams were eliminated following the
judging of Task #1 and Task #2. 16 student teams competed in the third and final task of the
Young Entrepreneur Competition and have been invited to the Awards Dinner as finalists, along
with their parents and teacher sponsors.
TEAM AWARDS:
Secondary School Teams: A prize of $1,800 will be awarded to the First Place team, a $1,000
prize goes to the team who wins Second Place, and the Third Place team will be taking home $500.
Middle School Teams: The First Place team will be awarded $1,000, a prize of $750 goes to the
Second Place team, and the Third Place team will take home $500.
INNOVATION AWARDS:
There will be two Innovation Awards of $500 and $250 presented to the Secondary and Middle
School teams that judges felt showed the most creativity and innovation in the development and
execution of their business idea.
TRADE SHOW AWARDS:
Two Trade Show Awards of $250 will be presented to the teams with the most effective and creative
Trade Show Booths.
All finalists receive a gift bag containing items donated by sponsors from the business community and
their schools.
All students who have made it through the three tasks to emerge as finalists
in the Young Entrepreneur Competition are to be commended
and congratulated for their accomplishment!

History
EIGHTEEN YEARS AGO the Central Economic Development Commission and School
District No. 23 Career Life Programs created the Young Entrepreneur Competition.
Seven years ago, Okanagan College School of Business joined the partnership and Students
in Free Enterprise (SIFE) have worked with business students at OC to mentor our Middle and
Secondary School student entrepreneurs.
Student teams are mentored by SIFE Okanagan students (Students in Free Enterprise), which
is comprised of 2nd, 3rd and 4th year business students from the Okanagan College School of
Business. Teacher-sponsors from the schools also mentored and assisted the student teams.
In the early days, the competition had two categories with students competing on an individual basis
in either ―Invention‖ or ―Business Plan‖. Seven years ago it was revamped to the ―Apprentice
Edition‖ with teams of students competing to produce a product or service based on specific criteria.
The new format of teams competing was an outstanding success.
Four years ago, the name of the competition was changed to ―The Dragons’ Den‖ as the structure
of the competition is similar to that of the CBC TV program. Teams have to ‗pitch‘ their ideas to a
panel of ‗Dragons‘ in hopes of being promoted to the next level of the competition.
It is the vision of the Central Okanagan Economic Development Commission, School District No. 23
Career Life Programs, and Okanagan College School of Business, to give students a glimpse into the
world of small business, teaching our region‘s young people about the benefits of entrepreneurship.
We are committed to preparing our youth to become the workforce of the future
— your future workforce. The ‘Dragons’ Den’ Young Entrepreneur Program
is an exciting program that helps to make that happen!
Over the years, our students‘ success in the Young Entrepreneur Competition has continued as they
became entrepreneurs ―out in the real world‖ operating their own businesses! Yard crews, web
design, graphic design, sign making, pine beetle wood pens, and clothing design have been just a few
of the successful ideas that have emerged from previous competitions.
We would like to extend a heart-felt thank you the sponsors for
Their commitment to making this event so successful.
by helping to offset the cost of the program supplies,
the judges‘ luncheons, the dinner and the competition awards.
