Welcome to the Texas Christian University Bands
and the Horned Frog Marching Band.
The TCU Bands are a vital part of campus life at Texas
Christian University. Members of the bands come from
all academic disciplines within the University and, in
fact, a major portion of the membership in the various
bands at TCU comes from outside the School of Music.
This diverse mixture of people and interests provides
a truly unique environment found in few campus
organizations.
The TCU Bands have a long and distinguished tradition
of excellence and accomplishment spanning over
a century. Membership in the bands carries with it a
significant responsibility to uphold and continue that
tradition. It involves dedication, achievement, and
hard work. There is always a place in the TCU Bands
for anyone who exhibits these important qualities.
The Texas Christian University Bands offers a full
program of concert, marching, pep, and jazz
ensembles each year. These ensembles are open to
all students at TCU regardless of academic major. All
bands meet and rehearse in Ed Landreth Hall, the
Walsh Center and/or Parking Lot 4 on the TCU campus.
All scholarship recipients are required to audition
for assignment to a concert ensemble (and jazz
ensembles, when applicable) each semester.
Punctuality, preparation, positive attitude, and
attendance at every rehearsal and performance
are expected. Please pay close attention to the
schedules and arrange to attend all the activities and
performances scheduled. Changes in the schedule
are quite rare, and it is your responsibility to make the
necessary arrangements far enough in advance to
avoid conflicts.
For those of you willing to make a commitment, the
TCU Bands can be a source of pride and enjoyment
long after your college years have passed. The music,
games, trips, and memories you make with your fellow
band members will be with you for a lifetime. We
encourage you to get involved and develop close
relationships with all of your band colleagues. The
band staff is experienced and ready to help you. We
know you will find them competent, efficient, and
willing to give you any assistance you may need. If
pride, excellence, hard work, friendship, and teamwork
interest you, the TCU Bands are for you.
Welcome, and enjoy!
Colorguard
The TCU Colorguard adds a visual component to
the Marching Band. We always strive to challenge
each member of the guard but do so in a fun
and enjoyable way. We welcome a wide range
of talent and skill and do not require any previous
colorguard experience. There is no tryout process
to be in the TCU Colorguard, however hard work
and dedication is a requirement. Depending on
the year’s show, the colorguard may spin weapons
in addition to flags. For the weapon line, previous
experience is typically needed. Members are not
required to play an instrument in any concert bands
but are encouraged to participate in other areas
of the TCU School of Music. For those looking to
continue their colorguard experience or want to try
something new, the TCU Colorguard is a great way
to make friends, get involved, and cheer on the TCU
football team.
The TCU Colorguard will be under the direction of
Curtis Green. For further questions about the TCU
Colorguard, contact Debbie Alenius in the TCU
Band Office at d.alenius@tcu.edu or 817-257-7640.
prior to the beginning of the semester.
Horned Frog Summer Band Camp
The week before school starts, the TCU Marching
Band begins preparation for the upcoming season
by returning to campus and starting to learn the
first pre-game and half-time shows. Each instrument
section meets on its own, working on music and
marching style, and on developing a common
bond upon which to build a great season. When
classes begin, band members are already settled
into their dorms and ready to start the semester.
Orientation Sessions & Frog Camp
There are Orientation Sessions and Frog Camps
that conflict with band rehearsals during band
camp. You may be excused from these rehearsals;
however, the Director of the Marching Band must
have these excused absences in writing prior to the
rehearsals missed. You may e-mail this information
to Debbie Alenius at d.alenius@tcu.edu. We will
learn pre-game drill during the first rehearsals of
camp. Those students with numerous misses could
miss getting a spot for pre-game drill.
Equipment for Rehearsals
INSTRUMENT, LYRE, ALL REHEARSAL MUSIC, FLIP
FOLDER, ALL DRILL CHARTS AS ISSUED, AND A PENCIL
are basic materials for every rehearsal and some
performances.
Water Dispenser - You might want your own water
jug. Please mark this item with your name. Water
will be provided at all rehearsals, but it is a good
idea to have your own quart-sized container.
Lyres - Every band member (except flute &
percussion) should have a lyre for their instrument
at every rehearsal and in the stands or at pep rally
performances. Although we will be memorizing all
music for performances, always have your lyre and
music handy. You will need to have a lyre even if
you have a school-owned instrument that didn’t
include one in the case. Buy one!
a NoTE FRoM ThE dRUM MajoRS
We hope your summer is going well! In a little more
than a month we will begin our band camp, and
we’re excited to see all of your pretty faces once
more. We’re also eager to meet all of the new
members! Keep the great memories of this past
season close at hand – defeating the Boise State
Broncos to become BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACK
Mountain West Conference Champions, watching
Casey Pachall break Andy Dalton’s single-season
passing records in only his FIRST year as a starting QB,
and traveling to San Diego to win the Poinsettia Bowl
(3-0 all-time in this bowl!). This 2012 season is sure to
be different in a lot of ways, but we can count on
Coach Gary Patterson to lead our football team to
success. You will perform in the TCU Marching Band
during our first year in the Big XII Conference, and
you will also be the first to play in the brand-new
stadium!
Due to the sizes and nearby locations of the other
schools in our conference, there will be many more
visiting fans and visiting bands at football games. This
creates an electric and exciting game atmosphere,
but it also means there will be tons of energy to
compete with in the stadium. To contend with
and add to this energy, we are looking to step up
our game and become the best and largest TCU
Marching Band possible. Just two years ago, we
took a band to Pasadena for the Rose Bowl that was
just over 200 members. Our goal is to surpass that
July 2012
Hey Band!
and make our way toward 260 members in the next
couple of years. We need YOUR help in making this
happen! If you know ANYONE who has played an
instrument in high school and is attending TCU or
another nearby college (TCC, Weatherford, TWU,
UTA, etc), please encourage him or her to march in
the TCU Band. There are dozens of students in the
area that would love to be a part of a Big XII band
but haven’t realized they have the opportunity to
participate.
Our show this year is based on a past Blue Devils
show, so we hope you are ready to work hard,
move fast, and play loud! We want to make a
great first impression in the Big XII and continue
TCU’s “Tradition of Excellence.” Don’t forget, as
our director Mr. Youngblood says, you will “have as
much fun as you can have in a band that’s still any
good.”
Feel free to email us with any
questions, comments, or
concerns!
Sincerely,
a LETTER To dRUMLiNE MEMBERS
Dear Percussionist
Greetings. We hope everyone is having a great
summer. We are very excited about this year’s
drumline and are looking forward to a great marching
season. With the move to the Big XII and plans
for competing at PASIC, it is going to be a GREAT
year! Just to clarify – you do not have to participate
in the PASIC drumline show to participate in Marching
Band. But everyone must audition. Competition
for this year’s drumline will be quite stiff, so we
encourage you to prepare accordingly.
Dorm check-in for drumline is on Wednesday,
August 8th from 9:00am – 1:00pm in the Dee J. Kelly
Alumni and Visitors Center.
The actual percussion audition/camp will begin on
Thursday, August 9th with auditions beginning at
9:00 am in the Band Hall located in the Walsh
Center, Room 104. If you would like to play in the
drumline, you must arrive on August 9th ready to
audition.
In addition to the following requirements, please
email Dr. West for possible additional materials.
Kappa Kappa pSi
A Note from the President
Hello everyone, and welcome to another exciting
year in the Horned Frog Marching Band! Whether
you’re a TCU Band veteran or a new member, I
hope you are ready for a season full of new friends,
fun activities, and good music. This coming football
season looks to be one of the most exciting that TCU
has ever seen. Our entry into the Big XII Conference
brings new challenges, higher expectations, and
a much larger stage to showcase our exceptional
band and football programs.
12
Your marching band experience will be more than
just rehearsals and performances. There are many
musical, social, and service organizations that
provide opportunities to serve the band program,
the University, and the Fort Worth community
while simultaneously having fun and meeting new
people. Kappa Kappa Psi, the National Honorary
Band Fraternity, is one such organization. We serve
the band in any way we can while maintaining
the highest standards of brotherhood, service, and
leadership.
So, on behalf of the brothers of the Gamma Sigma
chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, I would like to say
welcome to the Horned Frog family! The brothers of
Gamma Sigma are always here to help and serve,
so if you have any questions feel free to find one of
us and ask. I’m looking forward to a great season
and to meeting and marching alongside each and
every one of you. Go frogs!
A Note from the President
Welcome to the Big XII TCU Band Members! I
can easily say I could not be more excited for this
upcoming football season! I hope each and every
one of you is having an amazing summer whether
you are working or enjoying the beach. It’s hard
to believe that in a short amount of time we will
be outside, enjoying the Texas heat and gearing
up for another wonderful marching season. This
year will be a lot of fun with a different spin and
a new conference. But the TCU Marching Band
will still be bringing all the exciting stand tunes and
entertaining half time shows.
This year I have the privilege of serving as President
of the Beta Delta Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma. A little
bit about Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Band
Sorority, we provide service to collegiate bands, encourage
the advancement of women in the band
profession, and promote and enrich an appreciation
of band music through recognition, leadership
development, and education of its members. The
Beta Delta Chapter helps the TCU Band Program
in a variety of ways, including assisting incoming
freshmen and new members, organizing activities
during summer band, cleaning up after practice
and home games, hosting receptions for concerts,
participating in service projects for the community,
and much more throughout the year.
On behalf of Beta Delta, we would like to welcome
all the new incoming freshman and transfer students
to the Mighty Horned Frog Marching Band family!
Coming to Fort Worth and to TCU has been a
decision that I will never regret, and whether you
know it or not it will impact your life in the best way!
We are all very excited to welcome you to the TCU
family and can’t wait to get to know you better.
The ladies of Tau Beta Sigma are also extremely
July 2012
TaU BETa SigMa
excited to meet you. We are more than happy to
answer your questions, help you move in, adjust
to your new home or show you around campus.
Please don’t hesitate to ask, these ladies are more
than willing to assist. The TCU Marching band is one
of a kind, we work very hard at what we do but also
have a lot of fun. The TCU Marching Band is made
up of talented, dedicated, and passionate people,
and I know you will be able to find your place here.
To the returning members, get ready for another
great season of some Horned Frog Football! As
always, we appreciate your hard work and dedication
that you put into every season and I hope you
are excited for the Big XII. I am definitely looking
forward to this upcoming season and everything
that is in store for the TCU Marching Band this year. I
can’t wait to see everyone in August, enjoy the rest
of your summer. Get ready for the Frog Fever.
Go Frogs!
Sincerely,
