Christina Miller, first grade teacher at AGS, is teaching a<br />
math lesson using the infrared sound field amplification<br />
system that was funded in spring 2008. Ms. Miller’s<br />
microphone is visible around her neck and her voice<br />
is amplified by a system <strong>of</strong> four speakers strategically<br />
placed in the room. This allows the teacher’s voice to<br />
be heard at a uniform level that is typically louder than<br />
the ambient noise in the room. The students in each <strong>of</strong><br />
the AGS kindergarten and first grade classrooms have<br />
shown a marked improvement in their on-task behavior.<br />
Deborah Nelson’s sixth grade science class at RMS planted tulip<br />
bulbs in the fall and will observe when they bloom in the spring.<br />
This fall grant will allow students to take part in a global study <strong>of</strong><br />
wildlife migration and the changing seasons. Students will also<br />
track the migration patterns <strong>of</strong> birds, butterflies and mammals,<br />
budding <strong>of</strong> flowers and weeds, changing <strong>of</strong> daylight and other<br />
clues. Journey North allows the students to collect, graph and<br />
analyze data that they will share with real scientists via the<br />
Internet.<br />
See page 28 and learn how Lynn Swider, Math Specialist at RMS, opened her classroom<br />
one day each week for Pizza and π thanks to a fall grant. Math students looking for<br />
additional help or practice have the opportunity to improve their math skills while<br />
playing math games and having lunch. Math Scrabble is a favorite for many students!<br />

a user-friendly way to find out about our grants and fundraisers. Spring grant requests<br />
are due on March 13. Grant request forms are available on the Web site and we will post<br />
the funded grants on the site in early April. Also information on the annual golf outing,<br />
scheduled for Fri., June 19th at Bliss Creek, is on the site. Please visit <strong>of</strong>ten!<br />
