A message from our city
Dear Batavians,
As I write this note, Batavia is experiencing one of its many late winter faces:
cold, but sunny, just enough to make one think of spring, until…we remember
that we’re due for substantial snow this evening. Oh, well. Even a heavy snow
fall here brings beauty. In early morning all sounds in the neighborhoods are
muffled. One can hear the blades of snowplows cleaning streets in the distance.
This magazine is named after all of us - Neighbors, and this issue is about
where we live. Our neighborhoods.
How many of us have taken the 90 minutes or so it takes to drive throughout the entire city? I think you’d be
surprised at the beauty and diversity of housing stock, whether it be the 130 year-old limestone cottages and
mansions, the stately Italianates and Victorians, the Arts & Craft homes which seem unfinished to some but
are really built to expose their structural elements, the Frank Lloyd Wright home on Batavia Avenue, the very
unique homes on Raddant Road and Park Street, or the more modern day Georgians to the west, to name just
a few.
Look at some of the details, like roofs with oriental-like slope changes (from which the new fire station roofs
were patterned), the stained glass windows here and there, the pergolas, decks and gardens peeking out from
rear yards, and the gorgeous front yard landscape displays. Inquire and find out which homes on Prairie,
Washington and Walnut streets used to house neighborhood stores in their front rooms.
Also notice areas ripe for redevelopment some day, namely industrial areas along Van Nortwick and Mallory
and Raddant and Wilson, which used to be the city limits when those activities were introduced to those thenvacant
areas.
Most importantly, this spring, when the yards are greening up, notice all the work being done on homes
in the neighborhoods. Though some of them haven’t seen complete new homes being built in a long time, all
across the City there is constant turnover of residents, constant introduction of new children to the blocks,
constant cleanup, upgrading, additions, and creative landscaping to complement the current occupants life
styles.
We still have our work cut out for us. The neighborhoods of downtown and South Rt. 25 among others, need
attention as changes in our current expectations and desires at time conflict with the desires and rights of
those who have owned or operated from those areas for many years. It is a slow process. The economy doesn’t
help efforts to attract private capital to those areas, despite our efforts to make facade and other grants or to
rebuild Wilson Street for instance. But we continue to work on making the public domain inviting this season
as North River Street will be repaved in the downtown, Wilson will be repaved from Island Avenue to Randall
Road, and depending on the stimulus package or the Congressman Foster has on our behalf, we would like to
repave or rebuild Main Street from Batavia Ave. to Randall. We’re also excited about the potential partnership
which may give us the first multi-use building on the river in years, and some other projects which aren’t yet
ripe for public comment yet.
So enjoy Spring in beautiful Batavia, bundle up the family and take them on a tour of their own town with its
neighborhoods full of life.
Yours truly,
Jeffery D. Schielke
Mayor
A message from our chamber
I have little doubt that my father was looking down on the two of us, smiling. He
spent his career in manufacturing, and so loved it and the people on the factory floor
who made the products that he may actually have had machine oil running through
his veins.
I had heard of Dick Hansen and Furnas Electric, but I never met him until he and
Joanne were named Citizens of the Year. One morning, as 2008 came to a close, we
chatted for more than two hours in the Chamber office. I fell in love with the man and
his worldview. He, like my father, had tremendous respect for, and confidence in, the people who toiled dayin-and-day-out
to actually get products made, out the door and into the hands of customers. As Dick spoke, it
became clear that, in his view, the people on the line were not accessories to management, they were the reason
management existed. To Dick, the most accurate organization chart was flipped over—with the legions of
managers at the bottom, there to support those whose hands actually assembled and molded the product. Dick
told me how, when new equipment was required at Furnas, line employees traveled to trade shows, and with
advice from industrial engineers, selected the equipment and presented their recommendations for approval.
The wisdom that lives in Richard Hansen is important and timeless, and it’s critical it not be lost. That’s
why I have invited him to share what he learned about business with the community. He is going to speak at a
Chamber lunch in May and is considering a series of articles for the Chamber’s newsletter.
I once heard it said that youth are the messages we send to a future we will never see. My greatest hope is that
the Chamber can help Dick Hansen
send important messages to the
future through the next generation
of business men and women.
Difficult times don’t last forever
As I steer around the pot holes on
the way to work, I can see the
street crew filling those craters
on Route 38. Once again, our city has
come to the rescue.
Our country has also seen a lot of
pot holes in its short history. Today is
no different. Practically all of us have
by John Masus
been adversely affected by the economic
climate. But I believe things are getting
better, and little by little the pot holes are
being filled. For example:
Credit markets appear to be healing.
Banks are lending. Homeowners are
refinancing.
The Fed is active in its anti-recession
Your finances Neighbors of Batavia
Good Neighbors
program. Money supply is accelerating,
and the Fed is starting to buy “large
quantities” of government agency and
mortgage-backed debt and a program
to buy consumer and small business
debt. All meant to stabilize the financial
system.
The President’s stimulus package is
designed to create jobs and stabilize
home prices. It would be a guess to
try to predict when economic recovery
begins. It could be as early as the second
half of 2009. In past history the stock
market typically precedes economic
recovery by several months. Of course
past history is no indicator of future
results.
The fourth quarter Gross Domestic
Product was grim at -3.8%; but
expectations ranged from -5.5% to - 8%.
Oil has fallen almost $100 per barrel
saving consumers nearly $300 billion
on energy costs. That’s your money and
now you can spend it elsewhere.
I do think we will work our way
through this mess. That’s not to say it
will be easy and quick or without more
volatility. But always remember . . .
difficult times don’t last forever.
“Influence
— Dick Hansen
Dick and Joanne Hansen still live in
the same house they bought 39 years
ago, in the community where they met
and still hold dear, Batavia. This year
they have been recognized as Batavia’s
2009 Citizens of the Year.
Of the many contributions the couple
has made to the community they are
noted most for two. One was Dick’s
commitment to carry on the company’s
scholarship programs. The other is
Joanne’s untiring dedication to helping
cancer patients. Together, Dick and
Joanne have touched countless lives
through their storied life in Batavia.
During his 25 years as CEO of
Furnas Electic, Dick Hansen remained
committed to the scholarship
foundation that his grandfather, Carl
Furnas, started in 1961. The Hansen-
Furnas Foundation (originally Furnas
Foundation) continues to provide
scholarship opportunities for people
in and around Batavia, and also in
Clarke County, Iowa. Over the years
the foundation has provided over $4
million in scholarship money to over
3,000 recipients.
As a cancer survivor, Joanne
Hansen led the efforts to establish the
LivingWell Cancer Resource Center
in Geneva. While combating her
disease, she was frustrated with the
lack of a local centralized location for
cancer information and support. As a
board of directors’ member of Delnor-
Community Health Care Foundation,
Joanne advocated researching and
developing a place where cancer
patients, their families and care givers
could turn for support at all levels.
The result of these efforts, LivingWell,
is quickly growing into a regional
resource center.
Dick and Joanne met at Purdue
University and were married in Batavia
in 1963. A few years later, following
service in the Navy, Dick joined the
Joanne and Dick Hansen are the 2009 Batavia Citizens of the Year
family business, Furnas Electric.
During his 30 years with the company,
sales grew from $10 million $140
million, jobs increased from 200 to
1,200.
The couple was honored at the
Awards dinner January 30. See also,
Appreciating your home
When it comes to appreciating
your home, everything you need
is right here in Batavia!
So the value of your home
seems to be slipping
and sliding with no
end in sight.
What can you do about it?

12
Neighbors of Batavia
Appreciating your home
One thing you can do is
“appreciate your home.”
Take a look around,
evaluate what you can do to help
maintain its optimum value. Every
aspect from the outside to the
inside, from top to bottom, can
impact the value of your home.
Whether or not you are planning to
sell, now is a very good time to take
a closer look at it. Now is NOT the
time to let things slip into disrepair.
Maybe in the past you took your
home for granted. Not anymore.
Today, people are more aware than
ever of the importance of doing
everything they can to maintain
the value in their homes, especially
in a depreciating market condition.
Landscaping, decks and porches,
basements, roofing, ventilation,
kitchens, baths, and all the little
details in between can impact how
your home is appreciated…by
potential buyers if you sell; by your
family if you stay.
For the simpler projects consider
doing it yourself if you cannot
afford to hire a professional. For
more involved projects work with a
local contractor who you can trust
and depend upon to do the job right
and on budget.
Over the last year or so, several
Batavians have chosen to upgrade
or add to their homes. The Breisch
family wanted a bigger kitchen
and dining area. But to get what
they wanted required major
structural changes and a significant
investment in kitchen upgrades.
“We ended up hiring Jack Zaruba,
BBC Construction, which was a
really good decision,” said Roger
Breisch. “Jack gave us over two
pages of references, and he is a local
contractor which was important to
us. He finished the job on time and
on budget.” The Breisch project was
started in August 2007, finished in
October 2007.
Besides the major remodeling of
the kitchen, the 8-foot back wall
extension required an extended
foundation and a revised roofline.
Windows on the second floor had
to be resized to accommodate the
new roof. “It turned out to be a very
involved and complex project, but
we are very happy that we did it.”
The Breisch
remodeling
project (left
and next page)
went beyond
extensive interior
remodeling
and required
foundation and
roofline changes.
The Uba Tuba granite counter tops,
Alder cherry stained cabinets and
pale bamboo hardwood alternative
flooring create an impressive living
area. Roger is quick to point out
little details that make a huge
difference…like cabinetry that fits
flush to a wall that is not square,
and aesthetic finishes to custom
woodwork that just aren’t possible
with “off-the-floor” selections.
Two of the best living areas to
invest in home improvement are
the bath and kitchen. According
to the COSTVSVALUE Web site,
recommended by Jack Zaruba, bath
and kitchen remodeling recoup 70-
74% of the cost. Window and siding
replacement recoup 75-80% of
cost. For a complete list of average
project costs, resale value and cost
recouped, visit costvsvalue.com.
“The cost of materials is not going
down,” noted Jack Zaruba, “and the
The Federal Reserve recently indicated that the
percentage of equity in an average American home
has slipped below the 50% mark for the first time
since 1945.
cost of labor is not going down so
when you get estimates you can’t
expect to experience significant
cost reduction on projects.” Some
cost undercutting is coming from
individuals just entering the field,
desperate for work. Most will be
temporary and many consumers
will get hurt by these “fly by night”
contractors. “We are a part of
the community,” Zaruba added,
“and we like to give back to the
community whenever we can.
When the Park District needed a
new shed we were able to help them
out with that project.”
Paul and Laura Rakos hired
Batavia contractor, Collins
Construction, for their major
remodeling project. “Dan Collins
estimated 12-16 weeks and he
stayed right on schedule,” Laura
said. “This was a good investment
to help maintain the current home
value.”
When they purchased their home
in 2008, the Rakos knew that the
first thing they wanted was a lager
kitchen. They were very happy with
their decision to work with Dan
Collins. The kitchen and dining
areas were completely remodeled
13

Appreciating your home
A facelift, like this project by Collins Construction,
can provide enduring value to most properties and
give new life to an older home.
along with adding one bathroom
on the first floor and remodeling
two on the second floor. The home
was built in 1994 and the Rakos just
wanted it updated. The project was
started before they moved in.
One of the benefits of working
with a local established contractor
is a high level of trust. “We
become part of the family,” Collins
said. “For a couple of months we
practically live with them.” Word of
mouth referrals have led to several
projects for Collins Construction in
the upscale subdivision.
Steve Madlinger and his family
live in the same subdivision as
the Rakos. Dan added a three
season room to the back of their
home in the fall of 2007. “Dan is
What to watch for
If you’ve run into a contractor who has done
any of the following, you already know that the
contractor is a potential rip-off artist:
• Solicits door-to-door
• Offers you discounts if you find other
customers
• Just happens to have materials left over from a
previous job
• Only accepts cash payments
• Asks you to get any required building permits
• Does not list a business number in the local
telephone directory
• Tells you that your job will be a
“demonstration” to show potential new
customers
• Pressures you for an immediate decision
• Offers exceptionally long guarantees
• Asks you to pay for the entire job upfront
• Suggests that you borrow money from a lender
that the contractor knows
Source: lawyer.com
very dependable, he even returns
your phone calls, which is saying
something for a contractor,” Steve
laughed.
Not all improvements involve
major remodeling.
Tom Wangler, president of
Confidant Aire insists that “The
most intelligent thing a homeowner
can do now is reduce energy
consumption in and around
the home. Adding or
replacing insulation, fixing
bad spots in the insulation
all help to reduce heat loss.
Also, people need to look
at the ventilation in their
homes. We are finding high
levels of carbon dioxide in
homes built so tightly they
trap exhaled air in the home.
Good ventilating systems
help prevent carbon dioxide
build up.”
Resolving air leaks
could yield an energy
savings between 5% and
30% according to the U.S.
Department of Energy.
Tom also encourages
people to shop local for
contractor needs. “They
receive reliable service from
trusted sources and it is
good for the local economy.”
“We are even starting
to look over energy bills
very carefully, especially
for people with homes for
sale. The day may not be far
off when our energy bills
will be competing with our
property tax bills. When
that happens people will
definitely want to consider
energy saving options.”
“For example, if you need to
replace your water heater, consider
a tankless system.” Tankless Water
Heaters, also called Instantaneous
or Demand Water Heaters, provide
hot water only as it is needed.
Traditional storage water heaters
produce standby energy losses that
cost you money. We do not leave our
homes heated while vacationing.
We only heat our homes when there
is a demand for heat. In the same
way, a Tankless Water Heater is
used only when there is a demand
for hot water.
According to Tom Wangler, “We
are one of the few countries still
using tanks for heating water in the
home.” Depending on usage and

1
other factors, tankless water heating
can be 30% or greater more efficient
As spring approaches, pay
special attention to your yard and
landscaping. Regular care can
result in a great looking yard. All
contractors that we spoke to agree,
priority maintenance areas. The
big “no-nos” are no bare wood, no
missing shingles (no tiny leaks), no
damaged siding.
Finally, when Jack Zaruba came
to Roger Breisch’s home for this
interview, Roger pointed out a crack
in the ceiling. “I know this is out
of warranty, but is there anything I
can do about this crack?” Without
hesitating, Jack said, “Don’t worry
about it. We’ll take care of it.”
Why would anyone go outside
Batavia when the best that the
trades have to offer are right here.
City council adopts new downtown improvement
matching grant program
The Batavia City Council
adopted a new program to
benefit downtown property
owners and businesses on Jan. 20.
The Downtown Improvement Grant
Program provides a matching grant for
improvements to properties in any of
the downtown Tax Increment Finance
districts. Eligible improvements
include tenant improvements for
new and expanding businesses such
as restaurants, shops, residential and
entertainment uses. Improvements
such as utilities, restoration of historic
features, handicap accessibility, energy
efficiency, fire alarms and sprinklers,
and heating, ventilation and air
conditioning are eligible under the
program.
The city council budgeted $50,000
in 2009 for the program, which
provides up to a 50% match for eligible
improvements. Unlike other city grant
Trees—an inexpensive way to save energy
Planting trees can produce
significant cash savings when
they are properly used for shade
and winter wind protection. Studies
show that shade trees can produce
savings of more than 50% in air
conditioning use and associated energy
costs.
The contribution of trees in winter
may not be as obvious, but can be
just as dramatic. Homes that use
windbreaks can save as much as 17%
on heating bills. The National Arbor
An evergreen windbreak on the north or
northwest will help block cold winds in winter.
Large shade trees on the southeast,
southwest and west sides of the house
provide cooling shade in summer but
don’t obstruct the low winter sun.
Maximum shade comes from
deciduous (broadleaf) trees planted
close to the house (about 10').
Short flowering trees won’t
clash with utility lines.
Shade from trees improves human comfort,
reduces air conditioning costs and reduces
peak electricity loads, lessening the chances
of power outages.
Resident pays one-half of the tree cost.
Trees are approximately 1.5"-2.5" in diameter and 7'-12'
The top of the root ball is planted about 3" above existing
A 1-year guarantee is provided, subject to inspection by a
Once we have received all requests for a particular species,
we will send further instructions to residents. Letters will be
Copper/Lead Sampling Program for
drinking water. The testing for lead/
copper in drinking water is mandated
by the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (U.S.E.P.A.). Batavia’s water
has successfully complied with the
lead/copper regulation since the
Batavia has
top quality water!
Why buy bottled water when you can buy the
best for only $3.73 per 1,000 gallons? For the
past two years, all City of Batavia residents
have been receiving drinking water that meets or exceeds
all State and Federal EPA regulations, including radium.
With recent system improvements including new water
towers and the Central Water Treatment Plant, residents
can be confident that their water is perfectly safe and
tastes great, too. Our source of drinking water is deep
and shallow wells. While it may be a little on the “hard
water” side, the minerals that cause hard water are
actually pretty good for you. So, save your hard-earned
dollars and drink tap water. You’ll also be helping the
environment by eliminating some of those wasteful
plastic bottles. If you have any questions about your
water, we would like to hear from you. Please feel free
program began in the mid 1990’s.
Potential homes should have been
built prior to 1987 or have a lead water
service line entering the basement. If
these criteria are not met, newer homes
may also be considered. Homes with
the samples to be accurate.
Participating homeowners will
collect a water sample and provide it
Sample results will be reported as the
tests are completed. Sampling will
Use the Chamber’s New Community Calendar to place
events in Neighbors Magazine!
Now there is a valuable Community Calendar where any
organization can list upcoming events. In addition, events
listed on the calendar will automatically be on the Neighbors
of Batavia Web site and be submitted for publication in the
next magazine!
If you visit BataviaChamber.org and click on the
“Community Calendar” you will now see an “Add An Event”
button at the top of the page. By filling in the form, your
event will be submitted to the Chamber for acceptance
and immediate placement on the Chamber’s Community
Calendar. Why is this valuable?
• It will be a source of information for all residents to learn
about your events.
• It will make it easier for you to find out what events are
already planned for dates you may be considering for a new
event.
• As we said, your events will automatically be placed on the
Neighbors Web site and be submitted for the magazine.
All we ask is that the events be located in Batavia and be of
general interest to the community.
Juniors and Seniors have a new way
to find a college
http://connection.naviance.com/bataviahs
What is Family Connection?
Batavia High School Counseling and Advising Department has selected
Naviance–Family Connection, an online system to help our students and families
manage the college application process. We are pleased to offer this new resource
initially to our juniors and seniors. Eventually all grade levels will be utilizing this
program.
Over 800 universities and colleges have partnered with Naviance to allow
transcripts and other documents to be sent electronically for smoother and faster
processing. We will mail transcripts to schools who are not yet accepting them
electronically.
What will Family Connection do?
• Search for colleges
• Access colleges applications online
• Search for scholarships at BHS
• Link to other scholarship search sites
• Sign up for college visits
• Request letters of recommendation
• Request transcripts from the high school
• Track progress of transcripts and letters of recommendation
• Communicate between counselors and parents regarding college decisions
How do I access Family Connection?
Students and parents can access Family Connection through the BHS Web site.
There is an icon called NAVIANCE on the main page and links called FAMILY
CONNECTION and NAVIANCE on the guidance page as well. Parents and
students can enter as a “guest” or use the registration code they have been assigned.
Parent registration codes were mailed to all seniors.
Software Selection Process
• Enhanced communication with parents and students
• Added features for career counseling available
• Most secure available
• Aligns with ASCA National Standards for School Counseling
• Students graduating after 2009 will be allowed to compare their GPA and ACT to
other students accepted at particular colleges.
• Many schools in area using online tools for college process
• Allows for incredible amounts of data regarding selection and admission patterns
(all anonymous)
• Part of BHS Counseling and Advising Strategic Plan
• Easy upload and management of student and parent data
What can parents do?
Parents can register to be partners in the process. There is one registration form
for each parent. Parents will be able to search for colleges, add to the “colleges I am
considering” list, track and request transcripts, search for scholarships and look at
scheduled visits for college representatives.
Stick it, or else, Shaposhnakova.
by Elana Mudrak, Batavia High School Student
The only thing that’s said to be
more difficult than pronouncing
the name of a trick in gymnastics is
actually performing it in front of a
bunch of judgmental people, who
will take points away from you like
it’s the most fun they have ever had.
In a world of perfection, Batavia
High School does its best to stick it.
Opening their season on November
24, Batavia did just that and is
expecting to continue doing so the
rest of the season.
“We’d have to add some more
to get further,” Batavia gymnastics
coach Taryn Boyce said after last
year’s season.
The appearance of Batavia’s Danae
Fuqua as a sophomore in the floor
event and vault and Alessandra
Bronzino as a junior on the beam in
the state meet last year has excited
the team as a whole for this year’s
season and made them aware of
what’s needed to take it to the next
level. Fuqua placed thirty-fifth in
vault on the first day of state and
twenty-fourth in floor. Bronzino
placed fourteenth on the beam.
However, neither placed high
enough to move onto the second
day of the state meet.
“Last year we did really well. I
think we get better each year. “
Junior Kathryn Warner has been
on the varsity team for three years.
Just like Boyce, Warner is looking
forward to the season. She knows
that in order to do better than they
did last year, the team will have to
remain as versatile and consistent
as they were, but also bring a new
angle to the gymnastics floor. In
the opening meet, Warner helped
Batavia to the win on the vault,
which is her favorite event.
“We need to have clean routines
and can’t complain,” Warner said.
Unlike Warner, sophomore Emma
Gear is just starting her career
with Batavia gymnastics this year.
However, her goals for the team are
similar to Boyce’s and Warner’s. All
are striving to better the team.
“We work hard and always go all
the way,” Warner said about the 90
minute practices that are held after
school.
At practice, the gymnasts get to
clean up their routines and practice
whatever they feel they need to
for upcoming meets. As an end
to practice, Boyce takes the team
through an intense 30 minutes of
conditioning, which leaves many
girls exhausted, but still working
hard to be the best they can.
“I like to run fast at stationary
objects,” Warner said about her
favorite event, the vault.
Many people may think gymnasts
are crazy. Gymnastics tests the
mental and physical strength of
each gymnast every time one
approaches an event. If one leg or
toe is bent, it results in a tenth of a
point reduction. If an undergarment
is showing, it results in another large
point reduction. On a ten point
scale, from technical to apparel,
every mistake counts.
“It’s only the beginning of the
season, but after winning our first
meet, I feel like our team’s ready for
anything,” Warner said.
After a strong finish to last year’s
season and a promising start to this
year’s season, Batavia is ready to
stick it.
Pizza and π
Lunch break! Time to
refresh the brain while
we learn.
There’s a new menu being
offered at Rotolo Middle
School this year. It’s called
Pizza and π. Students are getting
extra help in math during select lunch
periods and enjoying every bite.
Throughout the week, 6th and 7th
grade students bring their lunch, a
pizza-shaped pass, their homework,
and or assessments to the classroom.
Eighth graders come during their
advisory periods. They receive
individualized help from
Ms. Swider, or from
volunteers Janet Gidding,
and Pamela Van Treeck.
Students solve problems
on their paper table clothes
and use an abundance of
math manipulatives to
help them understand or
reinforce a math concept.
Students who attend
regularly have shown
progress.
Friday is extra special. Thanks
to a generous grant from the
Batavia Foundation for Educational
Excellence, mathematical games
designed for middle level students
have been purchased. Students
can choose from a variety of board
or card games to play with their
friends. Students love the fun
and challenge. It gets even better.
He has great patience, 16 years of
it. Congratulations go to Mr. Chad
Cleary at Grace McWayne Elementary
School! His kindergartners recall Mr.
Cleary as “awesome” and “patient.”
He just loves to see his students grow.
One of his favorite things to see is the
children who can barely write their
names when they come in and by the
end of the year, they can write full
sentences. When asked how he felt to
receive this award, he responded with:
“Humbled.” Congratulations
Christina Miller, first grade teacher at AGS, is teaching a
math lesson using the infrared sound field amplification
system that was funded in spring 2008. Ms. Miller’s
microphone is visible around her neck and her voice
is amplified by a system of four speakers strategically
placed in the room. This allows the teacher’s voice to
be heard at a uniform level that is typically louder than
the ambient noise in the room. The students in each of
the AGS kindergarten and first grade classrooms have
shown a marked improvement in their on-task behavior.
Deborah Nelson’s sixth grade science class at RMS planted tulip
bulbs in the fall and will observe when they bloom in the spring.
This fall grant will allow students to take part in a global study of
wildlife migration and the changing seasons. Students will also
track the migration patterns of birds, butterflies and mammals,
budding of flowers and weeds, changing of daylight and other
clues. Journey North allows the students to collect, graph and
analyze data that they will share with real scientists via the
Internet.
See page 28 and learn how Lynn Swider, Math Specialist at RMS, opened her classroom
one day each week for Pizza and π thanks to a fall grant. Math students looking for
Batavia Public Library
Born to
Read gives
advantage to
children and
parents
Born to Read is a new
community-wide
program designed to
promote reading to children in
infancy and to support parents
in their role as their child’s “first
teacher.” It was developed by
a committee of librarians, teachers,
and other members of the Batavia
community.
The program gives parents of
newborns a tote bag filled with a variety
of age-appropriate books and early
literacy information. The tote bags are
free to new parents living within the
Batavia Public Library District, the
Batavia School District, or the City of
Batavia.
“Born to Read was developed as a
direct result of the Library’s long-range
plan and mission,” explained Joanne
Zillman, head of Youth Services at the
Library. “The Library already supports
The Library was founded by volunteers, and is governed
by volunteers, and will always be supported by the time,
National Library Week will be observed April 12–18
with the theme, “Worlds connect @ your library®.” First
observed in 1958, Library Week is sponsored each April by
the American Library Association and your local library.
It is a time to celebrate libraries and librarians and the
annually since 1970, Volunteer Week is sponsored each
April by the Points of Light Institute. It is a time to honor
At the confluence of Library and Volunteer is Batavia.
The origins of the Library can be traced to October 1866
and events that led directly to the creation of the Batavia
Library Association, a membership library—founded and
run by volunteers.
Some 15½ years later, at a town meeting on 4 April
1882, the residents of Batavia Township voted to create a
tax-supported public library and elect its first governing
board of citizen trustees—volunteers all, even after 127
years.
The tradition of volunteer service at the Library
continues with Angelina Moya, the Library’s new
volunteer coordinator, who is herself a volunteer. Library
volunteers include middle school and high school students
and adults of all ages. The work is varied, the hours are
flexible, and the value to the Library is immeasurable.
Batavia Park District News
Challenge course offers team-building opportunities
Hawks’ Bluff, one of the Batavia
Park District’s newest parks,
has quickly become one of
the gems of the Park District with its
natural setting and scenic views. A new
element was recently added that will
also make it a prime location for team
building.
A challenge course was installed in
December that will eventually provide
local groups and organizations the
chance to participate in team building
activities. “Hawks’ Bluff was an ideal
location to have the challenge course,”
said Jim Eby, Director of Planning and
Development, “We had the space to
build it and the wooded environment
gives it a secluded feel.”
The challenge course consists of five
stations with the ability to do multiple
activities. Stations include a trust fall,
“up and over” wall and a “spider Web
” in which teams assist individual
members through the “Web ” without
touching any of the surrounding cables.
Park District staff is currently
working on a list of guidelines and
instructions for the challenge course
stations. The goal is to have the course
open for rental to community groups by
summer or fall.
Kristin Bykowski, Teen Center
Supervisor, has participated in team
building activities many times over
the years with the Teen Center Youth
Board. The challenge course located
at Hawks’ Bluff will provide the teens
and other groups in the area with the
chance to improve communication and
problem-solving skills, and to have fun
overcoming difficult tasks as a team.
“Team building activities engage
the kids in wanting to work together
because it’s a fun and exciting activity
and gets them outside of their comfort
zone, “ said Bykowski, “Plus they love
the challenge!”
In addition to the new challenge
course, Hawks’ Bluff offers a limestone
St. Patty’s Bunco Bash
and asphalt walking path, fishing
station, multi-court area with a
basketball goal and tennis practice wall,
a unique multi-level playground, large
picnic shelter and an amphitheatre.
The park site also boasts a 20 space
parking lot and features ADA accessible
playground equipment.
Hawks’ Bluff is located in the
Tanglewood Hills subdivision, west of
Randall Road and south of Main Street
at 950 Twin Elms Lane.
Bark Park permit holders barked, Park District listened
In spring 2008, Batavia Park
District opened its first Bark
Park on a grand scale with
approximately 500 people and fourlegged
friends in attendance at the
grand opening on June 1. More than
240 people purchased permits for the
Bark Park’s inaugural season.
In preparation for the 2009 season of
the Bark Park, the Batavia Park District
sent a survey to last year’s permit
holders to evaluate the park’s first
season. Nearly 40% of permit holders
responded and offered both positive
and constructive feedback. As a result,
permit holders will see several changes
this season.
First and foremost, the Park District
wants to make the park affordable to
everyone, and therefore has lowered
the cost of a permit to $20 for residents,
$25 for Batavia nonresidents and $30
for nonresidents. Also new this year,
per city ordinance, permit holders will
be able to register up to 4 dogs with
each additional dog costing $5, $6 and
$7 respectively.
Maintenance procedures will be
greatly enhanced from last year.
“Mowing frequency will be increased
in designated areas to reduce the height
of the grass so that people will enjoy the
area more,” said Eric Lacher, Director
of Parks and Properties, “We’ll also
be doing some more aggressive weed
control, early seeding and some tree
removal to reduce the density so the
park won’t be as muddy.” Maintenance
crews will also be installing a small
pavilion for user’s convenience, and the
City Water Department has donated a
fire hydrant that will be placed inside
the park for pooches’ convenience.
“We learned a lot, and we’re definitely
listening to permit holders to make
the park even better,” said Executive
Director Mike Clark.
Permit holders also
expressed an interest in
having programs held at
the Bark Park, including
“puppy play dates”. As a
result, permit holders will be
given the chance to provide their email
at registration to be part of a database of
users interested in setting up play dates
at the park. Other possible programs
include doggy birthday parties or pet
adoption days.
The Batavia Park District has
just unveiled the new plans
for the 2009 summer season.
The Hall Quarry Beach will open for
the season on Monday, June 8 and will
remain open through Sunday, August
16. New hours at the Quarry will be
from 11:30 am to 5 pm daily to best
serve residents during peak hours.
A “Welcome Back” season pass
promotion will run from March 30
- April 9 for patrons who purchased
season passes in 2008. During the
promotion, 2008 pass holders will be
able to purchase season passes for $38
for youth, $48 for adults or $15 for
seniors. Beginning April 13 the cost
will be $50 for a youth season pass,
$60 for adults and $20 for seniors.
Daily admission rates will remain
the same: $7 for residents and $10 for
nonresidents.
The Quarry will host monthly
celebrations to commemorate the Park
District’s 40th anniversary. June will
include a sand sculpture demonstration
and sand building contest, and bubbles
will be given to the first 500 patrons.
In July we’ll go back in time to 1969
when we put the first man on the moon.
Younger patrons can enjoy an inflatable
“moonwalk” jump house and the first
200 patrons will receive astronaut ice
cream. A 60’s tribute band will perform
in August, and hippie tattoos will go
to the first 500 patrons. Well-known
Quarry events such as Freaky Friday
and National Night Out will also be
held this year.
Also new this year is “Way Back
When-sdays.” Every Wednesday the
Quarry is open, it will pay tribute
to “Way Back When” with roll-back
discounted daily admission pricing to
recognize the Park District’s 40 years
of service. The cost for daily admission
will be $2 for residents and $5 for
nonresidents on Wednesdays.
This year patrons will be able to bring
food into the Quarry, and vending
machines will be added. Parking and
entry to the Quarry will be through the
south gate.
Hall Quarry Beach occupies a former
stone quarry owned by the Batavia
Park District. It features a sand bottom
swimming area covering 60,000
square feet that includes islands, slides
Mother’s Club
celebrates 75 years
Batavia Mothers’ Club
Foundation (BMCF) is proud
to announce the celebration
of their 75th anniversary, the
Diamond Anniversary. The
Batavia Mothers’ Club was
started in 1934 by a group of
young mothers interested
in forming a book study

Neighbors of Batavia
Around the Block
group. Because it was a
small group, the meetings
were held in homes. Over
a period of time the focus
of the group changed
to include philanthropic
work. The members
began to learn about the
needs of the community
while maintaining their
commitment to serve as
a resource to each other.
That focus continues today.
In 1997, it was recognized
that tremendous money
was raised from the Club’s
fundraising activities. The
intent was to safely and
conservatively invest the
money on a short-term basis
to increase the amount to be
disbursed. In this process the
then Board of Directors was
made aware of the need to
incorporate. Incorporation
was initiated in an effort
to protect the Club and its
members. In 2003, the Club
was granted 501(c)3 status by
the Internal Revenue Service
and effectively renamed
The Batavia Mothers’ Club
Foundation.
The members of BMCF
dedicate themselves to
improving the quality
of life of the children of
the community through
philanthropic endeavors and
work in cooperation with
organizations having similar
purposes. They constantly
seek new opportunities to
provide charitable aid or
events within the Fox Valley
area and act as a resource for
women and their families.
BMCF conducts two annual
fundraisers: Fox Trot, a 5K
Run/Walk and an Autumn
Arts and Crafts Show.
The Fox Trot is quickly
approaching and will be
held on Sun., April 26 at the
Batavia Riverwalk. Please
view bataviamothersclub.org
Plans for the Autumn Arts
Batavia Enterprises receives Ole Award for warehouse renovation
Batavia Enterprises, Inc. was honored at the 2008 Annual
Batavia Chamber Awards dinner as an Ole Award recipient for
its contributions to the city with the new industrial warehouse
renovation of 111 Union Avenue. This 35,000 square foot
building was originally a paper factory that was later converted
to produce war products for the US Government from 1940-
1959. The renovation design kept a classic historical structure
with updated office space and a large ample parking lot. The
outside of this building was rehabbed to include professionally
landscaped entrances that guide visitors directly from the
parking lot to the main office. Directly across from the Batavia
Quarry this large warehouse is tucked safely into the heart
Commerce to local Batavia businesses that have achieved
high standards in renovation and new construction of both
