Social Club Activities

We started this year a
little differently by
electing a Chairpersonwhogoesnorthforthesummer
and a Vice-Chairperson
who is here year-round. Since
ChairpersonLindaFletcherhad
to leave for Michigan early in
March, I ran theApril and May
meetings. Those meetings were more casual than usual – formal is not my style – but I
don’t think any of the residents minded. We laughed and ate cookies, and still had short
meetings.
Under my reign we had a Patio Party on April 5, featuring Mickey who did a wonderful
job. About forty persons attended and thanks to your donations to the hat, Mickey
was paid at a better rate than we had expected. Then a few days later we had the Easter
dinner, another great success. In May and June we had Mother’s Day and Father’s Day
Breakfasts.
July brought the Fourth of July Dinner, which was delicious. On August 2 we had
another Patio Party with Michael Hastings entertaining us. The weather was too warm
to be on the patio so we moved into the clubhouse. We had only twenty-seven attendees,
but we had fun.
And finally, on August 12 we had a Continental Breakfast. We served sausage gravy
with biscuits, a variety of baked goods, a large assortment of tropical fruits, coffee, tea,
mimosas, and orange juice. We had the best committee ever: Lue Mauge, Milli Ricci,
Ronnie Dittus, Paul and Janet Fether, John Boline and Carol Lemke, Judy Gray, my husband
Bob and our son Casey. We sold thirty-eight tickets. Thanks to these volunteers.
They are terrific.
And thanks to you, Donna. You also are terrific!

therefore I am” is a fundamental concept of
philosophy: We have to assume that we really exist,
because we’re aware of our existence. But in neurological
terms the idea is slipperier, because scientists
haven’t been able to identify the area of the brain
responsible for self-awareness.
Research involving lucid dreaming may solve
the mystery. Lucid dreamers are sleepers who are
aware that they’re dreaming and can even control
their dreams. Scientists at the Max Planck Institutes
of Psychiatry in Munich are using magnetic image
tomography to monitor activity of lucid dreamers in
regions of the brain associated with self-reflective
functions during consciousness. By comparing brain functions before and during lucid
dreaming, the scientists hope to pin down how the brain knows it’s awake and aware.

HOW IT BEGAN AND OUR INVOLVEMENT WITH THEM.
(IT’S BEEN MORE THAN FOURTEEN YEARS
NOW)
Some years ago a local couple wanted to be missionaries.
They were waiting for their church to assign them somewhere
overseas.Alocal agency asked them to temporarily
provide a foster home for a coup of abused children who
had to be taken from their parents.
Once they became involved they realized that there
was a great need here and they decided to devote themselves
to providing a loving environment for children who were abandoned or for some
reason had to be removed by the state. These kids became their mission.
Over the years the Safety Harbor Boys Home focused on boys who had special
problems that made it difficult to place them with regular families. The home grew to
accommodate twenty to twenty-five boys. A large ranch house was doubled in size by a
local church and two mobiles were added for older boys who required less care.
At Christmas time our Social Committee would donate money to our fire department
for all the attention they gave us during the year. One year we were told that such gifts
could no longer be accepted and the chief suggested some local causes that the firemen
support for the holidays. We picked three. Held a dinner and took up a collection. We
raised over $1,000 and gave it to the firemen to help in their efforts.
The Safety Harbor Boys Home was one of the three. The other two were individuals
whose needs were temporary. We had such positive feedback from the firemen about
the joy the boys had with the Christmas presents that were purchased with our donations
that we started to focus on the boys’ home every Christmas since then.
Believe me, those boys really love what we are able to do for them. Some like to
think of us as their grandparents. I know that the gifts they receive, thanks to you, are the
first gifts some have ever received. Some are given a small amount and turned loose in a
store to buy whatever they want with the ten or twenty dollars they have. I am told that
some will spend their money on other boys. To see these kids is to see the face of God.
I again ask you to help us by supporting the collection this year. You can make your
check payable to the Amber Glades Boys’ Fund. The check can be given to me or any
member of our Board of Directors. (Names and lot numbers are in the phone book.) We
need to complete our collection by December 2. Call me if you have any questions.

it is a MERRY CHRISTMAS for the boys who call the
Safety Harbor Foster Home their home …
On Thursday, the 29th of November, there will be the Annual
Italian Dinner at our clubhouse and the proceeds will be
passed on to the boys. The menu will be Chicken Parmesan,
Penne Regate, Johnny Bread, dessert and coffee.
The price for this all-you-can-eat dinner will be just
$6. for members and $8. for non-members. Dinner will
be served at 5:00 p.m. and you may purchase your tickets

The tables will be set up by 10:00 a.m. and you may
reserve your seat soon after that. We will supply the dinner
plate, but please bring your flat ware and coffee cup. This will
once again be a BYOB.

buck. We hope to see you all there …
It has been reported that our good friend Al Landry is ill and we are sure that he

1. We’d like to thank Scott Barker and Park
Management for purchasing a new Bunn
Coffee system for our clubhouse. It’s here,
but still has to be hooked up to a water line. We will continue with our regular
coffee makers until we get used to using the new.
2. Please do not put coffee cups or any other food or drink items on the cabinets
by the sliding glass doors. There is audio equipment in the cabinets and we
have already cleaned up spills that have been left to dry.
3. Functions have started and already the kitchen and tables are not being cleaned
properly. The chairperson of an event will be called to come back and tidy up.
If you are a chairperson, you can appoint someone to clean up, but you are
still the responsible person. Please check the clubhouse before you leave.

Don Does It Again!

Sixty-two hungry persons were regaled at Sunday breakfast on October 14. Such a
goodly crowd demonstrated the popularity of these events.
The menu consisted of French Toast, Pancakes, and Sausage augmented by Fruit
and Orange Juice plus all the coffee you could drink, ably served by our ever-vigilant
waiters. No one went home hungry since extra pancakes were placed upon your plate
without your even having to ask.
We noticed quite a few new faces among the usual crew; a welcome sign and we are
encouraged by their willingness to pitch in. We can’t always rely on the same persons to
keep on doing it over and over again.
We thank Don Horrigan and is tireless committee for providing us with his cheerful
way to join with our neighbors on a Sunday morning.
And now we have another surprise for you. Sharon and Nile Hochstetler are chairing
another Sunday breakfast on November 4. The menu sounds new and exciting – a
crescent roll wrapped around a sausage, potato casserole, and tomatoes. That’s enough
to satisfy the heartiest appetite! There will also be fresh fruit, coffee or tea.

A Lesson In Creativity From Mr. John Cleese

John Cleese, the star of Monty Python’s Flying Circus, Fawlty
Towers, and dozens of other comedy classics, knows something
about being funny, and about being creative.
He once told an audience at the Cannes International Festival
of Creativity about the time he lost a script that he and Python
co-star Graham Chapman had written together. Cleese had to
quickly recreate it, and the resulting piece of writing turned
out to be actually better than the original.
“The only thing I could think,” he told his listeners, “was
that my unconscious had been working on the sketch and improving it ever since I wrote
it. I began to see a lot of my best work seemed to come as a result of my unconscious

We regret to announce the death of long-time resident and Florida native, Jean
Starneswhopassedawayafteralingeringillness.JeanhadlivedinAmberGlades
for more than thirty years. She loved to join with her friends at Friday night
games and had served as an officer of the Social Committee. She was an accomplished
swimmer. A memorial service was held at the Clubhouse on October 8.
We express our sincere sympathy to her bereaved family consisting of 2 sons and a
daughter.

Since I moved into the park four years
ago I have worked on many committees.
And have volunteered my
services in a number of ways.
In any group situation you have organizers,
workers, followers, and do-nothing-ers. Which group do you fall into??? It’s
always the same people who come forward to participate, while the rest do nothing but
criticize. I understand now why so many (once active) residents have pulled back and
refuse to become involved. THEY’VE HAD IT!
It’s really too bad because there is a lot to talent here that could be an asset to the
park. The Recreation Hall was always nicely decorated prior to my moving into Amber
Glades, and I’m sure it will continue to be in the future. I feel as though I have done my
share in keeping the hall festive for whatever occasion arose that warranted it. However,
I am now going into retirement as far as decorations are concerned, and I will no longer
assume the responsibility.
Last year shelves were installed in the closet in the Recreation Hall specifically
to accommodate boxes of decorations. I moved everything out of the old storage shed,
categorized, and marked each box for easy identification before placing them in the new
location. It is so convenient now – no need to lug anything a great distance – and the ladders
are located in the same room. So it should present no problem to anyone who wants
to decorate the hall from here on in.
I intend to continue to conduct the Exercise Classes five days a week, as I feel this
is so very important to all of us in our senior years. It is not just for weight control, but
for all around good health. Ask your doctor.
I want to thank those of you who have helped and supported me in my efforts.

to be the only person from that era who is a resident today with the exception of myself.
My husband and I moved into Amber Glades in November, 1983 and became permanent
Florida residents in June 1984. I became editor of the Newsletter in January, 1985 and
have been at it intermittently ever since. If you, or anyone you know of, was a resident at
that time and is still with us, we’d like to hear from you. (Jeanne Frymire 726-1912).
My husband passed away in October, 1996.
