Early German Settlers memories and diaries<br />
JMC Karsten / Bisley Autobiography<br />
On 7 th August 1893 JMC Bisley formerly Karsten wrote an <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g account of her<br />
memories of <strong>the</strong> early years <strong>in</strong> Nelson around <strong>the</strong> 1840’s. It not only tells <strong>the</strong> story of her<br />
Karsten family but she also mentions o<strong>the</strong>r early German <strong>settlers</strong>. 6<br />
Rev He<strong>in</strong>e Diary<br />
Rev He<strong>in</strong>e settled <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nelson district serv<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> needs of <strong>the</strong> Lu<strong>the</strong>ran <strong>settlers</strong> until his<br />
death. His memories and diary are a valuable resource when research<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> early German<br />
<strong>settlers</strong> and settlement of Nelson. 7 “Nelson, A History of Early Settlement” author Ruth Allan<br />
made many references to He<strong>in</strong>e’s diary especially when writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> chapter on <strong>the</strong> German<br />
<strong>settlers</strong> of Nelson.<br />
August He<strong>in</strong>e<br />
Rev He<strong>in</strong>e’s son Augustus He<strong>in</strong>e compiled and collected <strong>in</strong>formation and papers on <strong>the</strong> early<br />
German Settlers of Nelson. He wrote to many of <strong>the</strong> descendants of <strong>the</strong> St Pauli and Skiold<br />
<strong>settlers</strong>. The letters of reply he received from <strong>the</strong> early German <strong>settlers</strong> and <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
descendants have survived. 8<br />
These letters and documents have been copied onto microfilm. On reel 4, papers dated<br />
June 1843-March 1844 are some translation from Rev He<strong>in</strong>e’s Diary. On reel 5 are copies of<br />
<strong>the</strong> protest papers signed by <strong>the</strong> early “St Pauli” German immigrants. On reel 5 <strong>the</strong>re is a<br />
letter written by Miss Mary Elizabeth MANSSEN <strong>in</strong> reply to August He<strong>in</strong>e request for<br />
<strong>in</strong>formation about <strong>the</strong> descendants of George and Johanna MANSSEN.<br />
