As most of <strong>the</strong> early German Settlers of Nelson were Lu<strong>the</strong>rans this is a valuable resource<br />

when try<strong>in</strong>g to located any early birth, death and marriage registrations.<br />

New Zealand Company Land Allotment Register<br />

The New Zealand Company Nelson land allotment register records <strong>the</strong> names and section<br />

number that was first allotted to <strong>the</strong> land purchasers and early <strong>settlers</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nelson<br />

Township. The series/box also records o<strong>the</strong>r Nelson suburban districts <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Suburban<br />

North. 18 The register regard<strong>in</strong>g re-selection of <strong>the</strong> land <strong>in</strong> Nelson is held on microfilm. 19<br />

Nelson Land and Property purchased by <strong>the</strong> German Settlers<br />

The New Zealand Company land allotment register lists <strong>the</strong> early selection of land but none<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Germans steerage passengers are listed. The German Agent BEIT purchased 5<br />

allotments and <strong>the</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>rn German Missionary Society purchased 1 allotment.<br />

We know that some of <strong>the</strong> St Pauli steerage passengers gave Beit money to purchase land<br />

on <strong>the</strong>ir behalf but Beit did not have <strong>the</strong>ir names recorded on <strong>the</strong> land documents. Most of<br />

<strong>the</strong>se Germans stayed <strong>in</strong> Nelson wait<strong>in</strong>g for Beit to release <strong>the</strong> land or money to <strong>the</strong>m. Beit<br />

was paid $3,500 by <strong>the</strong> New Zealand Company <strong>in</strong> December 1848 and told never to return<br />

to New Zealand. He was given 3-4 months to ga<strong>the</strong>r up his family and leave. The Beit<br />

family left <strong>in</strong> 1849 for Sydney, Australia.<br />

The “St Pauli” passengers listed below gave Beit money to purchase land on <strong>the</strong>ir behalf<br />

before leav<strong>in</strong>g Germany. 20<br />

Nelson land title documents after 1853.<br />

The Land and Survey Nelson Prov<strong>in</strong>cial Government documents have been <strong>in</strong>dex and some<br />

of <strong>the</strong> early German <strong>settlers</strong> are listed. 21 The Nelson City Council Lands and Deeds<br />

department also have an early card <strong>in</strong>dex cab<strong>in</strong>et that also record some of <strong>the</strong> early<br />

Germans <strong>settlers</strong>. 22 This card <strong>in</strong>dex cab<strong>in</strong>et is now housed at Archives New Zealand <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
