Welcome to our new Chamber members
This issue of The Hub highlights many of the newest members of the Chamber of Commerce.
More than 25 businesses have joined the Chamber in 2012, keeping our membership
the highest per capita in Iowa. Thank you to all of our members for supporting the Chamber
and each other.
We've had a busy summer with the Fourth of July parade, All Class Reunion and Grinnell
Games. Participation at Grinnell Games nearly doubled from 2011, and we're already planning
for next year's event. Save the date for the second weekend in June! Thank you to all
those who have participated, volunteered and sponsored those events.
Now that our summer events are behind us, we are focusing on the Grinnell Housing Initiative. The goal is to
increase housing stock for middle incomes, helping people find the right home so they can move their family to
Grinnell. We are currently working with six builders on the Initiative, and the first house is underway at Prairie
Pointe (see page 6). If you'd like help finding housing or building a home in Grinnell, please email me at exec@
getintogrinnell.com. I'd love to help you find what you need.
We've also begun working with a group of our large employers to present community orientations during
their new employee orientations. When someone starts working here, they are often looking for a place to live
or wanting to know more about the community, so it's good for us to meet them and answer those questions.
We're also working with the spouses of new employees to help them find job opportunities in the community.
There's a lot of exciting things happening in Grinnell - if you would like to receive weekly email updates from
me, please send your email to exec@getintogrinnell.com.
Ron Lowry’s flying career began long
before the Grinnell Regional Airport
was even built and after 32 years in the
business, he has decided it is time to give
back to the flying community and the
community of Grinnell.
One of Lowry’s businesses, Lowry Flying
Service, took over management duties of
Grinnell’s airport on July 1, 2012, and he
hopes to increase aviation activities and
help the public realize what a tremendous
asset the airport is to the community.
Lowry’s flying career began with a flying
lesson he received as a gift. Since then, he
has logged more than 10,000 hours of
flight time.
In a past career as a farmer, Lowry hired
aerial applicators to spray his crops and he
saw an opportunity to start his own aerial
application service. The business has been
serving the agricultural community for
over three decades.
“I would just like to see the airport
grow,” Lowry said. “We want to engage the
people who use the airport by giving them
input on operations and future projects.
This is a public airport, so we also want
the public to understand what we do here.”
Lowry said many companies in the
community use the airport for corporate
travel, and more area businesses are
beginning to see its value.
“Meskwaki Casino recently flew country
singer Dierks Bentley into this airport
for a concert,” Lowry said. “That’s much
more convenient than him flying into Des
Moines.”
City Manager Russ Behrens said the
airport is used to serve the agricultural
sector and many of the area's major
employers, including Jeld-Wen, Monsanto,
Grinnell College and Manatts.
“The airport is probably the most
unappreciated community asset in
Grinnell," Behrens said.
“Transportation is vital to economic
development and the airport is an
important component. We are excited to
have Ron and his staff combining their
aviation knowledge and skills with an
entrepreneurial spirit to strengthen the
airport.”
The Grinnell Regional Airport is
undergoing a makeover during this
transition. Improvements include new
carpet, furniture, paint and other interior
improvements to the terminal area,
along with lighting, heating, floor and
general maintenance improvements in
the terminal hangar. Construction of a
holding apron and substantial repairs
to the runway and apron will also be
As fixed base operator for the Grinnell
will offer aircraft maintenance services,
fuel sales, airframe and power plant
mechanics with inspection authorization
on staff, and aircrafts for rent. They also
have a certified flight instructor on staff
to give lessons. Lowry said he is happy to
make arrangements to take people up for
rides over Grinnell.
Lowry is a long-time Grinnell
businessman who has operated numerous
businesses in the area including Lowry
Dining: Restaurant Contest
Carly Groben wins restaurant contest,
Prairie Canary opening at 926 Main St.
Former Des Moines restauranteur and
award-winning chef Carly Groben has
been hard at work preparing to open a new
restaurant at 926 Main St. in Grinnell, named
Prairie Canary.
Groben won nearly everything she needs to
start a new restaurant in Grinnell by securing
the top spot at Iowa’s Best Bite Restaurant
Challenge on August 1.
Her menu is focused on comfort food with
local flair. It will include traditional American
food with plenty of vegetarian options for
breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner. There
will also be a bar in the lower level.
By winning the contest, Groben earned
$10,000 in startup cash, $15,000 in inventory,
$10,000 in small wares, a professional
branding package by Art A La Carte,
membership in Dine Iowa through the Iowa
Restaurant Association and much more.
A panel of more than a dozen judges
representing Grinnell’s diverse population
along with some industry leaders chose
Groben’s restaurant based on her fresh, casual
approach to New American cuisine and her
dedication to the community of Grinnell.
“Carly had been looking in Grinnell
before the contest even started and really
demonstrated that she wanted to be here,”
said Dick Knapp, a contest organizer and
owner of the restaurant building.
“We really loved everything about her
concept, from the atmosphere to the menus
to the pricing. We felt this would be a great
everyday restaurant for Grinnellians, and also
a destination restaurant sure to draw diners
from outside the community.”
Groben is the former owner of Des Moines'
Proof and Flour restaurants.
The restaurant contest resulted in 44
entries from seven states. Three finalists were
selected to prepare sample menu items and
present their concept to the panel of judges.
get back to running my own business.
Grinnell really grew on me during
this time. I think the town has a lot
to offer a family, it’s progressive, the
community involvement is great, and
the people here are fantastic. I look
forward to supporting the community
and helping out other local businesses.
Something most people don't
know about me: I would like to
try my hand at writing and directing a
comedy movie, and try stand up.
John Ulrickson
Why you should know him: John
and his wife, Melissa, bought The Door
Doctor business in 2005. When your
garage door stops working or it's time
to upgrade to a new one, give them a
call.
What The Door Doctor is: The
Door Doctor offers sales, service,
and installation of residential and
commercial overhead doors and
openers.
How the business has changed
since we started: When we
bought the business, it was based out
tcspgrinnell
of Newton. We bought a building
(formerly Classic Car Wash on
Highway 146) in Grinnell and have
moved our family here to Grinnell as
well! However, we have always serviced
many towns surrounding Grinnell and
Newton. This year, we hired an office
manager, Lisa.
My typical work day: I typically
spend a minimal amount of time in
the office, now that we have an office
manager. I am primarily servicing and
installing garage doors - what I love to
do most!
Beyond my Business Card...
Most challenging part of the
job: Getting the black grease off my
hands at the end of the day? Truthfully,
I love what I do.
Why Grinnell: My family has
enjoyed and appreciated the simplicity
and diversity that Grinnell has to offer.
When I'm not working: We have
four boys, ages seven and under. We
enjoy family activities together, such as
the park, pool and bike trail.
Grinnell Pizza Ranch
1
What's
something people don't realize about Pizza
Ranch? Monday nights are Tip Nights. Organizations help serve guests
and they receive all the tips plus 10% of the sales from that night. Also,
we have a pick-up window so you can call in your order and then pick it
up without leaving your car.
What's gone better than expected since you opened this
spring? We have a lot of customers from the smaller communities
surrounding Grinnell. It's great to see all the support we have in the area.
Do you have any advice for others wanting to start a
business? Getting involved and supporting your community will be
the foundation of a strong business.
Why Grinnell? Why not Grinnell? Grinnell needed a Pizza Ranch.
The tight-knit community and small-town family values are those little
things that make a Ranch work. It's easy to give back to a town like
Grinnell.
What's something that most people don't know about
you? Brandon is terrified of clowns. We had a clown come in to eat
once and Brandon hid in the kitchen until he left. This is the second
Pizza Ranch Brandon has had ownership in. Chance participated in
high school and college rodeo, and he was the four-year undefeated
badmitton champion in high school. Chance and his wife recently had
a baby.
The Grinnell Pizza Ranch is located at 613 West Street South,
next to WalMart. Phone: 641-260-8020
Organization Spotlight
Organization Spotlight: Big Brothers Big Sisters
Francesca Cunningham, a mentor coordinator
with Big Brothers Big Sisters, shares some
information with us about the organization.
What is Big Brothers Big Sisters?
Nationally, Big Brothers Big Sisters has
been in existence for over 100 years. The
local Grinnell Big Brothers Big Sisters
Program was established in 2002 and
currently serves approximately 40 children
in grades kindergarten through seventh
grade.
How does it work? Children in
kindergarten through fourth grade
at Bailey Park, Fairview and Davis
Elementary Schools are matched with
carefully screened adults from the Grinnell
community. Under the supervision of a
mentor coordinator, the child meets with
their mentor on a consistent basis.
● Annabelle’s Attic
● Bogie’s Book Nook
● Callie’s Corner
● Cheri Starr Jewelry
● Deja Vu Dress Consignment
Why is it an important organization in
the community? The concept is simple.
Most can recall one or more persons from
childhood, other than parents, that were
instrumental in helping them become the
person they are today.
It may have been a grandparent, coach,
teacher or a kind neighbor. That person’s
special interest in their life at that time
helped shape them into a confident, caring
adult. That type of childhood experience
lies at the core of the Big Brothers Big
Sisters’ mission.
What's something most people
don't realize? The need for mentoring
continues to grow. The national economic
downturn places additional stresses on
both the family unit and the individual
child. Having a caring, positive role model
willing to listen, encourage and inspire
● Industrial Lace
● Jennifer Weinman
Photography
● Prairieland Pantry
● Sage Truffles
Like Marketplace on Main on Facebook!
can help children handle these additional
stresses.
What are the duties of a Big Brother
or Big Sister? Persons interested in
becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister need
to complete an application, provide names
of references, be interviewed and agree to a
series of background checks.
Once accepted, the adult is matched with
a carefully selected child. Typically,
the adult and child meet one on one
during lunch and recess at school
once a week.
Periodically, the mentor
coordinator communicates with the
Big, the child and often the teacher
or parent to provide support in the
form of encouragement and advice
as needed.
Some, but not all, matches
● Scrap It Plus
● Simba Shop
● Sugar Rush Candy Shoppe
● Watkins
eventually become community based.
Occasional group activities are planned
for all Bigs, Littles and their families to
participate in.
How can people get involved?
Businesses, organizations or individuals
wanting additional information about
the program should contact Francesca
Cunningham at 641-990-0567 or dfcham@
A Walk Around the Block
New business found everything it needed downtown
Schultz got everything for his business during one walk around the block
When Bryan Schultz launched
Opposable Thumbs, a copywriting
and marketing firm, he was able to
get nearly everything he needed
to run his new company in one
convenient location. But instead
of turning to a big box store or
a mall, he found what he needed
right in downtown Grinnell.
“There was never any doubt
in my mind
that I would
be doing
business in
G r i n n e l l ,”
Schultz said.
“I can get
p e r s o n a l
service that
makes a real
difference and support the very
same businesses who support
me.”
Schultz’s first stop was at
the Grinnell Area Chamber of
Commerce office to become a
member of the Chamber. While
Schultz is a former Chamber
staffer, he said his decision to
become a member is based on
more than employee loyalty.
“I assigned a dollar and time
value to nearly every benefit the
Chamber offers, and it literally
saves me thousands of dollars a
year in marketing costs alone.”
Schultz noted.
“And a strong Chamber helps
Grinnell continue to grow, which
is how my business will grow. It
was a no-brainer.”
Schultz took his logo and
stationery designs to Total Choice
Shipping and Printing just a few
steps away from the Chamber
office and within a few days
had everything he needed to
communicate with his clients.
“I’m in the industry so I’m
incredibly picky about the quality
of my materials,” Schultz said.
“Being able to look the owner
right in the eye and be assured
they’ll take care of me is a big
deal. I don’t get
that if I deal with
someone outside
the community.”
S c h u l t z
continued his
d o w n t o w n
stroll to Awards
Unlimited, where
he worked with owner Stephanie
Hoopes to find the perfect
company shirts.
“I can’t tell you how thrilled
I am with the quality of the
embroidered shirts I got from
them,” he said. “I didn’t just have
to rely on catalogs or guess about
something online - Stephanie
walked me through material
choices, the size of embroidery
and the fit until I had exactly what
I wanted.”
Schultz said he has
more plans to do
business locally in the
Private Skilled Rehab Rooms with on suite bath
The Spaulding Room for coffee, visiting, or relaxing
 Main Street Café
 Free Wireless Internet and Bistro
Affordable, no increased prices for higher level of care
GREAT CARE CENTERED AROUND YOU!
future, from legal needs when
he incorporates his business to
accounting to sourcing local
companies to produce marketing
materials.
“I think it’s important that
local businesses and Chamber
businesses in particular hold each
other accountable,” Schultz said.
“I know that a dollar I spend
within the Chamber will
eventually find its way back to
me after doing a lot of good here
in town. Those dollars we spend
elsewhere - what are the odds
they will come back?”
