Dear Friends,<br />
Imagine a world where women and girls are thriving and have the means<br />
to reach their full potential. Imagine the benefits of a world like this for<br />
everyone. Such a world is one the Women’s <strong>Funding</strong> <strong>Alliance</strong> works to<br />
bring forth every day, and we worked even more diligently to achieve it<br />
in 2005.<br />
It was an extraordinary year. We increased our grant making by more<br />
than 19% and we laid the foundation for our status study, which<br />
was launched in early <strong>2006</strong>. This unprecedented study will help shape our<br />
future priorities and will be a resource for other funders and community<br />
leaders.<br />
Internally, 2005 was a time for growing and stretching. We welcomed<br />
new staff and board members and bid farewell to others. We tightened<br />
internal procedures and systems. And, a significant milestone, we completed<br />
a five-year strategic plan which guides our work through 2009.<br />
All of these achievements were made possible by the commitment of our<br />
faithful supporters. Whether you have been a long-time friend or are just<br />
learning about our work, we invite you to join us in building a just and<br />
equitable society for women and girls. Because we know that an investment<br />
in women and girls is an investment in a better future for all of us.<br />

Thanks to your generous support, the<br />
Women’s <strong>Funding</strong> <strong>Alliance</strong> (<strong>WFA</strong>) exceeded<br />
our goals for 2005. Highlights include:<br />
GRANTS<br />
• More than $236,000 distributed to <strong>WFA</strong>’s 21<br />
member agencies, made possible by workplace<br />
campaign donations.<br />
• More than $152,000 awarded in annual and donor-<br />
advised grants focused on addressing the needs of<br />
women and girls.<br />
OTHER PROGRAMS<br />
• <strong>WFA</strong> completed a Strategic Plan with the help of<br />
more than 20 community leaders, board members<br />
and staff. This plan outlines objectives for increasing<br />
<strong>WFA</strong>’s impact through 2009. The full plan is available<br />
at www.wfalliance.org.<br />
• <strong>WFA</strong> also embarked on a multi-year Advancement<br />
Campaign to strengthen our organization’s opera-<br />
tional capacity, conduct A Closer Look research study,<br />
and increase our strategic grant making. Several<br />
lead individuals and organizations stepped forward<br />
early to support this effort; their names are listed in<br />
the following pages.<br />
• <strong>WFA</strong> launched A Closer Look research study,<br />
which is taking an in-depth look at the realities<br />
facing women and girls in King, Pierce, Sno-<br />
homish and Whatcom counties. From this, <strong>WFA</strong><br />
will shape and lead a philanthropic agenda<br />
that has a greater impact, provides solutions<br />
to community issues, and targets funds<br />
toward the root causes of many challenges<br />
facing women and girls.<br />
WHO WE ARE<br />
No other organization in the Puget Sound region does what we<br />
do. The Women’s <strong>Funding</strong> <strong>Alliance</strong> (<strong>WFA</strong>) is the only funding<br />
organization in the Puget Sound region devoted solely to invest-<br />
ing in the lives of women and girls.<br />
Since its inception in 1983, <strong>WFA</strong> has distributed millions of<br />
dollars to more than 100 organizations, helping thousands<br />
of women and girls in our community.<br />
<strong>WFA</strong> invests in progressive, visionary and vibrant orga-<br />
nizations working on the ground level to address issues<br />
around education and leadership, poverty, domestic<br />
violence, discrimination and reproductive freedom.<br />
Often these organizations are meeting emerging needs,<br />
and are still small and under-funded. From the local<br />
Southern Sudanese Women’s Association to the North-<br />
west Women’s Law Center, contributions from <strong>WFA</strong><br />
make a significant impact on the infrastructure, con-<br />
tinued growth and effectiveness of these organizations.<br />

2005 GRANT RECIPIENTS<br />
<strong>WFA</strong> awards grants from funds donated outside of workplace<br />
giving campaigns. <strong>WFA</strong> focuses on investing in organizations<br />
and programs that are increasing the political, economic and<br />
social opportunities for women and girls.<br />
In November, <strong>WFA</strong> announced 12 new grants to a diverse group<br />
of agencies serving women and girls in the Puget Sound region.<br />
We thank the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for helping to<br />
make these grants possible.<br />
Aradia Women’s Health Center (AWHC)<br />
AWHC provides affordable, accessible, and comprehensive<br />
reproductive health services to women. <strong>WFA</strong> funds helped<br />
to provide health care, education and advocacy to the diverse<br />
community it serves. $10,000<br />
Camp Ten Trees (CTT)<br />
CTT provides youth – predominantly girls, who are LGBTQ or<br />
have LGBTQ parents – a safe space to form community, build<br />
their self-esteem, and learn leadership skills. <strong>WFA</strong> funds helped<br />
to provide fundraising and media training for the advisory committee,<br />
recruit diverse staff and youth, purchase equipment, and<br />
provide gender-unlimited programming. $10,000<br />
Church of Mary Magdalene, Mary’s Place<br />
Serving about 3,000 homeless women and children, the Mary’s<br />
Place program is one of the few places in Seattle that offer homeless<br />
women a welcoming and safe environment during the day.<br />
<strong>WFA</strong> funding assisted Mary’s Place to remain open seven days<br />
a week and meet the doubling of demand. $5,572<br />
Helping Link<br />
Helping Link’s English as a Second Language Program helps<br />
Vietnamese refugee and immigrant students, 85% of whom are<br />
female, learn English and basic life skills that greatly improve<br />
their personal and work opportunities. <strong>WFA</strong> funding bridged<br />
the budget gap brought on by federal and state eligibility changes.<br />
$5,572<br />
King County Coalition Against Domestic Violence<br />
(KCCADV), Multi-lingual Shelter Expectations Video Project<br />
With this project, KCCADV aims to make confidential domestic<br />
violence shelters a more viable option for refugee, immigrant,<br />
deaf, and hard-of-hearing domestic violence survivors. <strong>WFA</strong><br />
funding helped KCCADV consolidate the videos about basic<br />
shelter rules and operations and make them available to area<br />
service providers and shelters along with written translations in<br />
many languages. $4,725<br />
Legal Assistance by Whatcom Advocates, Project SAFER<br />
Project SAFER (Stop Abuse and Fear by Exercising Rights) is the<br />
only program in Whatcom County that provides free emergency<br />
legal services to victims of domestic violence, as well as education,<br />
training, and technical assistance to domestic violence victim<br />
services programs, law enforcement, volunteer attorneys, caseworkers,<br />
and the local courts. <strong>WFA</strong> funding provided a bridge<br />
grant to keep the critical legal services going. $10,000<br />
Mason County Counseling Services, Crisis Counseling<br />
Program<br />
The short-term crisis therapy Mason County Counseling Services<br />
provides can mean the difference for many women and girls in a<br />
county with high incidence rates of domestic violence, substance<br />
abuse and suicide. <strong>WFA</strong> funding helped the Crisis Counseling<br />
Program serve needy Mason County women and girls with<br />
significant emotional problems, through counseling, and/or<br />
referral to an adjunct source of support. $5,000<br />
Multifaith Works, Shanti Inmate Support Program<br />
The Shanti Inmate Support Program pilot project for women<br />
at the Washington Corrections Center for Women assesses the<br />
unique needs of HIV-infected women who are incarcerated,<br />
creates a service plan, determines program protocol, and identifies<br />
and trains volunteers. <strong>WFA</strong> funding helped Multifaith Works<br />
expand its innovative Shanti Inmate Support Program to support<br />
incarcerated women with HIV/AIDS. $4,130<br />
Northwest Women’s Law Center (NWWLC), Ensuring Access<br />
to Emergency Contraception<br />
Since 2002, Washington State law has required hospital emergency<br />
room staff to provide information about and access to<br />
emergency contraception (aka “the morning-after pill”) for rape<br />
victims seeking medical treatment. Yet, there are many stories<br />
of local victims not receiving information or being refused by<br />
pharmacists. <strong>WFA</strong> provided NWWLC with solid funding to<br />
change community thinking about this issue, and defend and<br />
ensure reproductive freedom. $25,000<br />
ReelGrrls<br />
<strong>WFA</strong> funding helps ReelGrrls continue their work as they<br />
transition to new funding sources. By blending media arts with<br />
technology training skills, they provide leadership opportunities<br />
and career development that have a long-term impact on lowincome<br />
girls who would never have thought these doors were<br />
open to them. <strong>WFA</strong> funds helped ReelGrrls continue their work<br />
as they transition to new funding sources. $10,000<br />
Southern Sudanese Women’s Association (SSWA)<br />
While their members move toward economic self-sufficiency,<br />
SSWA forms a supportive community and culturally-sensitive<br />
support services such as childcare, transportation,<br />
ESL classes, driving lessons and skills-based training.<br />
<strong>WFA</strong> funding helped SSWA with board development and<br />
training, particularly in fundraising, grant writing, and<br />
organizational management and development. $10,000<br />
Washington Women’s Employment & Education (WWEE)<br />
WWEE participants learn the skills to permanently break free<br />
of poverty and achieve self-sufficiency. <strong>WFA</strong> funds helped<br />
WWEE provide the resources needed to help women and their<br />
families achieve success in the workforce, obtain and maintain<br />
permanent, affordable housing, move out of poverty and stabilize<br />

2005 MEMBER AGENCIES<br />
The Women’s <strong>Funding</strong> <strong>Alliance</strong> offers ongoing operational<br />
support to 21 agencies from funds raised by workplace giving<br />
campaign donations. In 2005, <strong>WFA</strong> distributed a total of<br />
$236,012 to the following organizations:<br />
Abused Deaf Women’s Advocacy Services provides crisis<br />
counseling and advocacy services for deaf and deaf-blind<br />
victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.<br />
BABES Network provides peer counseling, advocacy, support<br />
groups, referrals, education and outreach to women<br />
living with HIV.<br />
Chaya serves South Asian women in crisis and works to<br />
raise awareness of domestic violence in South Asian communities.<br />
FaithTrust Institute engages religious leaders in the task of<br />
ending domestic abuse and serves as a bridge between religious<br />
and secular communities.<br />
Harborview Center for Sexual Assault and Traumatic<br />
Stress provides specialized services for children, adults,<br />
families, and others affected by sexual assault and other<br />
traumatic events.<br />
Intercommunity Mercy Housing creates and strengthens<br />
healthy communities by providing quality, affordable, service-enriched<br />
housing for individuals and families who are<br />
economically poor.<br />
Jubilee Women’s Center provides transitional housing in<br />
Seattle for women who are homeless or at risk for becoming<br />
homeless. Jubilee’s mission is to help women make a successful<br />
transition to permanent housing, sustainable employment,<br />
and independent living.<br />
King County Coalition Against Domestic Violence provides<br />
leadership on behalf of community-based victim service<br />
agencies while representing the diverse interests of victims and<br />
survivors of domestic violence.<br />
King County Sexual Assault Resource Center works toward<br />
the elimination of sexual assault by providing innovative,<br />
educational programs and comprehensive services enabling<br />
clients to move from being victims to survivors.<br />
NARAL Pro-Choice Washington Foundation educates the<br />
public on the social, health, legislative and historical aspects<br />
of reproductive choice.<br />
Northwest Women’s Law Center protects and advances the<br />
progress of women and girls at work, in school, and in virtually<br />
every aspect of their lives.<br />
Passages Northwest instills leadership and courage in adolescent<br />
girls through the medium of the outdoors, integrating<br />
arts, theater, and the natural environment in its program.<br />
Planned Parenthood of Western Washington works to<br />
ensure that all people in Western Washington can make<br />
informed choices about reproductive and sexual health,<br />
and has provided high-quality, affordable birth control<br />
since 1935.<br />
Intercommunity Mercy Housing<br />
Positive Women’s Network connects women and their<br />
families to health care, social services, and disease-prevention<br />
programs.<br />
Powerful Voices offers girls hands-on experiences to develop<br />
leadership and critical thinking skills through a school-based<br />
program, a summer leadership camp, and programs for incarcerated<br />
girls in juvenile detention and after their release.<br />
Refugee Women’s <strong>Alliance</strong> provides refugee and immigrant<br />
women with networking opportunities, education and support<br />
services related to domestic violence, family literacy, and<br />
pre-school and parenting education.<br />
Residence XII recognizes the special issues and needs of<br />
women with alcohol and chemical dependency and provides<br />
comprehensive treatment for women and their families.<br />
Seattle Girls’ School empowers middle-school girls to think<br />
critically and seek creative solutions to real-world problems in<br />
a challenging academic environment that highlights science,<br />
math, technology and diversity.<br />
Washington Community <strong>Alliance</strong> for Self-Help fosters<br />
economic self-sufficiency for low-income women, people<br />
with disabilities and other underserved individuals through<br />
self-employment training, lending, and access to capital and<br />
business development.<br />
Welfare Rights Organizing Coalition educates and empowers<br />
low-income parents-especially those who receive public<br />
assistance-through clinics, leadership development, individual<br />
advocacy, assistance, classes and workshops.<br />
Women’s Housing, Equality and Enhancement League<br />
works to end homelessness through the empowerment and<br />
action of a non-hierarchical, grassroots group of homeless and<br />
formerly homeless women.<br />

2005 RIPPLE FUND<br />
Donor circles are an engaging, educational, and intimate way to practice philanthropy. Individuals pool their gifts and serve as<br />
grant makers to fund specific projects and/or organizations. In 2005, the Ripple Fund Donor Circle granted a total of $25,000 to<br />
three organizations dedicated to promoting strong families:<br />
• $7,500 to Kindering Center, for the Support Group for Spanish Speaking Mothers, and $2,500 to be used as needed in<br />
recognition of the superior leadership of its executive director, Mimi Siegel;<br />
• $7,500 to Metrocenter YMCA for its Girls of Promise program; and<br />
• $7,500 to Parent Trust for Washington Children, for its Families in Recovery Support Group program.<br />
RAPID RESPONSE GRANTS<br />
In 2005, Women’s <strong>Funding</strong> <strong>Alliance</strong> responded to the Gulf Region hurricane tragedies with a total of $5,000 in grants to two<br />
sister agencies providing services to women and girls:<br />
• Community Shares of Louisiana<br />
• The Women’s Fund of Greater Birmingham (Alabama), Hurricane Katrina Recovery Fund<br />
FINANCIAL REPORT<br />
The Women’s <strong>Funding</strong> <strong>Alliance</strong>’s audited financial<br />
statements are for the year ending December 31, 2005.<br />
Because of FASB regulations, this audit does not include<br />
donor-advised revenue or gifts. Allocations for<br />
2005, including these gifts, totaled $395,802.<br />
<strong>WFA</strong> provides fiscal sponsorship to two organizations<br />
that have yet to obtain their own tax-exempt status:<br />
the Northwest Girls Coalition and the Women’s<br />
Bioethics Project.<br />
According to the Office of the Secretary of State Charities<br />
Program, 90 percent of <strong>WFA</strong>’s total expenses in<br />
2005 were directed to support program services.<br />
