Vertigo Theatre Society
Board of Directors
Thank you to all members, including those who serve on the board, for their continued
involvement with Vertigo Theatre Society.
It was gratifying to see that in the past year, even during a time of economic uncertainty,
Calgarians continued to invest their money in theatre, both through donations and
through ticket sales. The organization is growing and developing on all levels. Vertigo
Theatre’s reputation as a home for exceptional entertainment experience is growing as
well.
Under the leadership of Artistic Director Mark Bellamy and General Manager Suzanne
Mott, the Society is expanding our audience and fostering a welcoming environment for
theatre professionals. Including our own programming and rental groups, The Playhouse
and The Studio were in use 91% of the dates between September 1st and June 30th.
Vertigo Mystery Theatre’s production of The Mousetrap was one of the most attended
shows in the organization’s history with over 10,000 people attending. Y Stage also
achieved great success with over 2,000 people attending the return of one of the most
beloved productions in young people’s theatre, Snowflake.
Sponsorship represents an on-going commitment between this organization and others.
We are proud to have this year and next the partnership of AJM Petroleum Consultants
as the Vertigo Mystery Theatre season sponsor, and Suncor Energy as the Y Stage
Season Sponsor.
ATB Corporate Financial Services continues their sponsorship of Vertigo Mystery
Theatre and we thank them for being the Centre Stage sponsor for 2008/2009.
Thank you to our very supportive gift-in-kind sponsors JuneWarren-Nickle’s Energy
Group, Rock; Paper, Scissors; McAra Printing; and Corona Digital Imaging.
A very special thank you to the Calgary Herald and Swerve for their extraordinary
commitment to the arts and to the growth of our series specifically.
On behalf of the Board and Staff, I would like to give special recognition to members of
the board who completed their terms this year. They helped guide this organization
along for many years and their hard work and leadership are greatly appreciated. Ed
Bownes contributed a great deal to the board of the Vertigo Theatre Society. He created
systems for board self-evaluation and helped develop the role of the board in this
organization as it has evolved over the past several years. Fred Rea sat on the board
through many changes in this organization. He was a steady and trustworthy influence
as the organization overcame many challenges. His guidance to this board and to the
general manager was invaluable.
We have had a very successful year and look forward to the challenges and rewards
ahead.
2008/2009 VERTIGO THEATRE SOCIETY ANNUAL REPORT
vertigotheatre.com02

Artistic Director’s Report
Mark Bellamy
Artistic Director
Vertigo Theatre is:
This past year at Vertigo has been one of incredible growth and
success, both administratively and artistically. The 2008/2009
seasons for both Vertigo Mystery Theatre and Y Stage were, to
my mind, the strongest we have ever had in our history. We took
great strides forward artistically and were rewarded with great
response from our audience and the arts community.
VERTIGO MYSTERY THEATRE
The loyalty of our Vertigo Mystery Theatre patrons is extraordinary.
I am thrilled they have embraced our programming choices
over the past year. As we continue to expand the envelope
artistically of what mystery is and can be, it allows us to bring
new and exciting work and ideas to our stage. These new ideas
and challenges are what keep us growing and evolving as
Canada’s premiere producer of works based in the mystery
genre.
Some highlights for me of the 2008/2009 season include the
world premiere of William Link’s Columbo Takes the Rap. Having
the legendary William Link join us for the opening was quite a
thrill for everyone involved. Even more thrilling was how
incredibly impressed he was with the caliber of work and the
talent that we showcase here at Vertigo. It’s not easy to impress a
Hollywood legend but we did!
Later that season our production of An Inspector Calls was a
with deeper issues of societal guilt and the role we each play in
shaping the world around us. This show had a great impact on
our audience, and was a clear sign that our audience is as
receptive to challenging work as any other in the city.
Murder, a co-production with the Gateway Theatre in Richmond
BC, was a great success and a great way to introduce the kind of
work we do here to another audience as well as forging
connections with another company. I hope to see more things
like this in our future
Works like these and the work we continue to do this season is a
part of that ever-expanding dialogue that we have with our
audience. The ability to entertain while still producing thought-
provoking theatre is one of the greatest things any theatre
company can aspire to and I am very proud that Vertigo is
becoming known for doing just that.
Y STAGE
1. Vertigo Mystery Theatre – Canada’s only professional theatre annually presenting a series of mystery-based plays.
2. Y Stage – Calgary’s only presenter of a theatre for young audiences series showcasing professionally produced work
on tour from across Canada and beyond during the regular theatre season.
3. Provider of a performance home for numerous performing arts and arts education organizations.
The addition of Nathan Pronyshyn as Y Stage Producer adds
another artistic voice and viewpoint to Vertigo Theatre. Nathan has
already made a huge impact on the organization with his vision for
the future of Y Stage, continuing the extraordinary work done by
Suzanne Mott who founded the series
The biggest development of this past season at Y Stage was a new
addition to the series as we expanded to teen programming. Green
Thumb Theatre’s acclaimed production of Cranked was a highly
meth addiction. By partnering with AARC to do post show
discussions for both school and public performances we were able
to deepen the experience for our audiences. This dynamic
presentation was immensely successful and had a strong response
from schools necessitating the need to add 6 additional
performances
Last year saw a marked growth in the audiences for Y Stage. We had
great attendance for the shows and now have a growing recognition
amongst Calgary's theatre community for presenting truly
excellent theatre for youth and families. Our Y Stage Club
Receptions & Opening Nights have become increasingly popular as
we see the audience engaging in discussions about the work and
the issues that are raised.
We also spent some time last year strengthening our relationships
with the National Theatre for Young Audience community across
the country. Nathan was able to take several excursions to see
shows and meet with artistic leaders from other organizations to
ensure that Vertigo’s Y Stage series has the national prominence
and recognition it deserves
MENTORSHIP
Vertigo has a strong reputation with the Calgary Arts Community as
a great place to work, a place for seasoned artists to be challenged
as well as a place where we encourage young artists to grow and
of the organization, from the administrative level through to
designers, directors, actors and technicians. I feel that mentorship
in the Arts is vital and I am proud that Vertigo Theatre has
developed a reputation as being a place where artists of all kinds
can come and be challenged in a positive and supportive
environment.
2008/2009 VERTIGO THEATRE SOCIETY ANNUAL REPORT
vertigotheatre.com04

General Manager’s Report
Suzanne Mott
General Manager
2008/2009 was an exhilarating season for Vertigo Theatre. It was our first to operate without the cloud of the accumulated deficit incurred
during the first year of operations at Vertigo Theatre Centre (2003/2004). We increased programming with the addition of a 6th production to
our Y Stage Series. We successfully navigated through the initial dark months of the economic crisis, achieving modest growth
through those turbulent times.
Attendance totaled 47,105 which was en par with the previous year but within that total, there was significant growth within some key areas.
• Subscriptions to Vertigo Mystery Theatre grew by 5% to an all-time high of 4,881. Of those, 86% were renewals which is testimony to a
loyal and satisfied audience base.
• Y Stage Club Passes to Y Stage grew by 14%; far exceeding our expectations.
• Student matinee ticket sales, an area we have been focusing on for several years, leapt 14%; once again exceeding our expectations.
Attendance to Vertigo Mystery Theatre plays filled 85% of our audience capacity while Y Stage attendance was 81%. These are extremely
high percentages and we couldn’t be happier.
We met our overall business objectives, achieving an overall growth in revenues of 8%. Ticket Sales and Venue Rental revenues increased
by 11% while we made some headway with government funding, seeing a 38% increase.
With the accumulated deficit behind us, we were able to make a modest contribution to the newly established Vertigo Theatre Endowment
Fund. The purpose of this fund is to provide the society with a new future revenue stream to support creative activity for both series. We
were also able to save sufficient funds over the season to refurbish the public areas.
This was my first season to not also wear the hat of Y Stage Producer and I could not be more gratified and proud of the work accomplished
by Nathan Pronyshyn who has taken over that series. Over this past year, Nathan has exhibited a strong vision for the future of Y Stage and
has established himself as a strong player within the national theatre for young audience community.
As with every year, I was rewarded and humbled by the dedication to this organization and the work that we produce by our incredible staff. I
wish to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of them for all of their hard hard work over the past year, that made our season
such a success. I also thank Mark, our artistic leader, who is a such a pleasure to work with and a supportive comrade-in-arms. The relationship
between General Manager and Artistic Director is extremely special and I wish to express my appreciation for his unwavering support that
helps make my work so enjoyable.
The relationship between General Manager and the Board of Directors is critical to the successful running of a mid-size arts organization.
Since I took on my position in 2004, I have only known the Board of Directors to be highly engaged. Over this past year, I was extremely
grateful for the unwavering support I received as General Manager and very moved by Cal Johnson’s nomination of me, on behalf of the
Board, for the Rosza Award for Excellence in Arts Administration.
The upcoming season offers several challenges. We are not yet out of the turbulent economic waters and it is still to be seen how we might
be affected in our ticket sales, sponsorships and donations. The Province of Alberta has announced that we should prepare for funding
cutbacks. We have already been impacted by these cuts with the Province’s cancellation of a new Gallery 2005 exhibit – a situation we are
still working to remedy with a new partner. We have once again budgeted for modest growth for our productions and our infrastructure. We
have a solid brand, a wonderful artistic program and enthusiastic stakeholders and I have full faith that we will be able to project further
growth by the time we sit down to draft our new 3-year strategic plan in February, 2010.
Introducing children to theatre is a wonderful part of the Y Stage experience.
Here are drawings sent in to us by children who attended SNOWFLAKE
