Thursday, Nov. 4, 1976 Knights Soccer Team Heads For State Tournament Action - The SHS soccer team will find out this weekend who the.y'll draw for an opemng state tournament oppionent. The Knights nished their season with a very productive 10-3 recbrd, winning their last game from Plainville on the road, 4- I, Monday. The victory over the Blue Devils was especially gratifying since it meant Southington swept both their games with', arch rival Plainville this season. It was also a high water mark for Danny LaPorte, who scored two goals in the game to set a record for goals in one season at SHS. Danny wound up with 11 for the season, topping the previous record of ten. Plainville scored the first goal of the game when Riera scored at 1:26 of the first period. However, the Knights went right to work, tieing the game on a goal from Gary Hennessy at 4:38 of the first roriod, with an assist m Danny LaPorte. LaPorte then put Southington in the driver's seat for good with. a second period goal (5:41), with an assist from Mike Giannotti and Bob Ouellette. Hennessy and LaPorte both scored insurance goals in the last period; Hennessy's at 1:13 and LaPorte's at 3:12 Hennessy assisted on LaPorte's goal while Gary's goal deflected off Gary Soucy, Plainville's goalie. Bret Aldleri was in goal for the Blue Knights until mid-way To Complete Schedule The Southing.ton Youth Soccer League will try again this Sunday to complete its schedule ending games. The rains came last Sunday washing away all the games set for Central Elementary Field. In the "A" Division this Sunday morning, the Lancers will take on the Tornados at 11, with the Stars and Metros squaring off at 12:30 in the afternoon. The "B" Division will find the Jaws and Bics going at it at 11 a.m. the Cosmos playing the , - White Caps at 11:30 a.m and the Atoms and the Taros competing at 12:30 p m League officials are hoping for a good turnout to finish out a mos{ successful season for the new league with the "new" game in town. Celeste Gate, a ten year old student from Central Elementary School skated in the Providence Rhode Island Freestyle Open Championships last weekend, winning a gold medal for her first place finish. To say the least, this has been a tremendous year for the diminutive talent, who resides at 114 Woodland Dr. with her mother, father and 13-year old sister, Christine, anotl er talented skater. Celeste cam- Famed and rescheduled this Sunday at Recreation Park. The first game at 11 a.m. will feature the third place teams in their respective divisions, the Jets versus the Chargers. At 1 p.m. the second place clubs, the Broncos and Raiders, will square off. And at 3 .p.m. the first place eams, the Patriots and Oilers, will vie for the honor of representing the league in the Town Championship game a week once. League president Ray Gustavson has announced that despite weather setbacks the league will play all of its playoff ga.mes, eventually. Stating further, "We just couldn't let the kids .play ball last Sunday since the field was so wet and muddy from the early morning rains. The list is not long when it comes to that type of "joc.k.' Oh, there are a couple that qmckly come to mind, .p ople like Bill Bradley of the Knlcks and Pat Haden of the Los Angeles Rams - Rhodes Scholars and excellent" athletes - but there aren't that many unfortunately. There is, however, an athlete at Southington High School blessed with that great combination of brains and brawn. His name is Mike Pallazo and he's the offensive center on the football team. In a recent PSAT Test (Pro- Scholastic Aptitude Test), Mike scored one of the highest marks in them out." Mike's sophomore year con-, sisted of playing some jayvee ball and in his junior year h.e go,t ,some varsity action against a}oney "when Russ Barry was njured. Otherwise I didn't play much-last season," he stated. This season Palazzo has been an integral part of a solid offensive line for SHS, with the likes f Larry Celella, Phil DeBischop, Frank Guistiniani, Richard Bates and others. Mike is proud of his fellow mates in the "pits," an area that needs hard working, unselfish players who receive very little ink from game-to-game. "We have a good group," he justifiably added. "We've gone up against some bigger teams, like thenation;enoughsotomakehim Bristol Central, but we played a semi-finalist in the 1977 National some good ball. Specifically Merit Scholarship program, against Central, we made some SHS Principal John Gasecki in a recent edition of the Observer, "represent the top half of one percent of the nation's most academically talented young people." Mike Palazzo is also president of the senior class, a member of the National Honor Society and sports editor of the school paper, The Emblem. He was awarded the 1976 DAR prize, and the Christopher Cronkite History Prize. When asked what kind of a player and young man Mike Palazzo is, football coach Dam D'An elo was off and running "Mike is a super kid," Dam commented with that twinkle in his eye. "He is not only bright in the classroom, but on the field. Marry times he will notice something we might be doing wrong and he'll tell us about it. We make an adjustment and things are running smooth again. And he's a real gentleman with a tremendous personality .. what a great credit to our school!" Palazzo didn't play football in his younger years. "I didn't even realize there was a program for kids when I was young," he told The Observer recently. "And when I did, I weighed over 115 peunds, so I was ineligible." Weight has always been a problem for the 5'8" - 215 pound nneman. "He worked very hard to keep in shape," said an admiring coach D'Angelo. "I had to do a lot of running thi past summer ... a lot of sprints preparing for the summer camel And it paid off," indicated Palazzo. The Blue Knights' center started his football career at De- Paolo Junior High School where he played defefise and offensive and more than held our own. (8-8 tie). "Against Cheshire (SHS won 21- 6) and Glastonbury (14-14 tie) we were really coming off the ball, but against Pulaski we just weren't doing it for some reason. The Pulaski game was a frustrating game for us (SHS lest 15-14 and fell to third place in the Colonial Conference). I think we just lost our c0ol in that game, but we were all putting out " Asking Mike Palazzo for his observation of recent Blue Knight ikames finds him saying things e, "I didn't really see the play." The reason being, he ordinarily wears glasses, except on the field. "I just keep looking at the scoreboard when I'm on the sidelines and when I see fourth down coming up, I put on my helmit ready to go in. I don't get to see some of our touchdowns until we see films of the game the following week." However, fighting the weight problem, not having the best eyesight, doesn't phase Mike Palazzo: he just keeps trooping along, being a success at whatever he endeavors. His next assignment might just well be at Harvard. "I'd love to go there," he said with that far offlook in his eyes. "But that won't be easy becaust it's so competitive getting in there. However, I am in the process of applying. ,The only school I've formally apphed for so far has been UConn. Because of my high marking in the PSAT I've heard from schools like Michigan State and Northwestern." As for Mike's future in football, "If I wind up at a school with a program I feel eapable of playing n, I'd give it a try, but if I go to one of those larger schools, I know I couldn't play on that level. They have also adwsed Director of Recreation Bill Masci that all existing equipm.e.nt in their posse.ssion will be made available to the town at no cost. The estion being, even ough that money had been used to purchase the uniforms, to whom do they officially belong? The Jaycees some $2,900 in running the operation. The Jaycees also stated they will continue to support the league in one of three ways: running and end-of-season banquet, funding the league or purchasing equipment for the program. They also asked, if possible, the name of the league remain Jaycee-Park Basketball. A group of local individuals interested in running the league this season will meet tomorrow night (Fri.) to make some definitive decisions on the makeup of the operation. Then the Eagles raced to consecutive victories over McGee of Berlin, DePaolo, St. Thomas and DePaolo.
