Celtic <strong>St</strong>udies<br />

At a reception in Charbonnel Lounge in<br />

November 1999, Oxford <strong>University</strong> Press<br />

launched Tales <strong>of</strong> the Elders <strong>of</strong> Ireland in its<br />

“Oxford World Classics” series. Tales is a new<br />

translation and edition (with introduction,<br />

notes, and commentary) by Celtic <strong>St</strong>udies<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Ann Dooley and U<strong>of</strong>T Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

Harry Roe <strong>of</strong> Acallamh na Senorach, the<br />

great collection <strong>of</strong> Celtic medieval tales. <strong>In</strong><br />

the December 3, 1999 issue <strong>of</strong> TLS, Irish<br />

poet Paul Muldoon picked Tales <strong>of</strong> the Elders<br />

as his second choice for the book <strong>of</strong> the year<br />

(his first choice being Seamus Heaney’s<br />

translation <strong>of</strong> Beowolf.)<br />

Wilma Scherloski is the newly appointed<br />

Facilitator <strong>of</strong> Lay Spiritual Formation.<br />

Wilma brings to her new position in the<br />

Faculty broad educational experience,<br />

including service as a high school Principal<br />

and as the former Superintendent <strong>of</strong><br />

Education for the Hamilton/Wentworth<br />

Roman Catholic School Board. She was<br />

recently honoured at the annual meeting <strong>of</strong><br />

Women in Educational Administration in<br />

Ontario with the Helen Horn Leadership<br />

Award in recognition <strong>of</strong> her “outstanding<br />

leadership in the education community <strong>of</strong><br />

the Province <strong>of</strong> Ontario.”<br />

At the <strong>St</strong>. Michael’s Convocation on<br />

November 27, 1999, Cardinal Aloysius<br />

Ambrozic, Chancellor <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong>.<br />

Michael’s, conferred honourary degrees on<br />

the Most Rev Attila Miklósházy, SJ, Bishop <strong>of</strong><br />

Hungarian Emigrants around the world and<br />

former Acting Dean <strong>of</strong> Theology at <strong>St</strong>.<br />

Michael’s, Rev M Owen Lee, CSB ’53, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

Emeritus <strong>of</strong> Classics and internationally<br />

renowned opera commentator, and Dr Dora<br />

de Pédery-Hunt, Canadian sculptor, and<br />

designer <strong>of</strong> coins and medals. Degrees,<br />

diplomas, and certificates were also<br />

conferred upon sixty-seven successful<br />

candidates from <strong>St</strong>. Michael’s Faculty <strong>of</strong><br />

Theology and the Division <strong>of</strong> Continuing<br />

Education.
