HOLIDAY SAFETY TIPS
This holiday season, don‘t let the spirit of
giving lull you into giving burglars, muggers,
and pickpockets a better chance to
do their dirty work. Crooks love the holidays
as much as everyone else, but
mainly because it’s an opportune time for
crime.
Homes jam-packed with glittering gifts.
Stores, malls and downtown streets
teeming with unsuspecting shoppers.
People rushing around, stressed out and
careless, looking for last-minute gifts,
trying to get everything done. It’s enough
to make a crook giddy with holiday joy.
Here are some tips on how to celebrate
safely this holiday season:
IF YOU’RE TRAVELING
♦ Get an automatic timer for your lights.
♦ Ask a neighbor to watch your home,
shovel snow, and park in the driveway
from time to time.
♦ Don’t forget to have mail and newspaper
delivery stopped. If it piles up, it’s
a sure sign you’re gone.
WORK CONTINUES ON UPDATE OF
2000 COMPREHENSIVE PLAN;
PUBLIC MEETING SCHEDULED
A Comprehensive Plan is a document that outlines community goals and aspirations in terms of a community’s
development by guiding public policy regarding transportation, utilities, land use, recreation, and
housing.
The update of the City of Waterville’s 2000 Comprehensive Plan is an effort that began in 2009 with the
formation of a 12-member Steering Committee. Due to budget constraints, the hiring of a consultant to
assist with this process was postponed until this year. A team composed of the Mannik & Smith Group, Inc.
of Maumee and Reveille of Bowling Green are now actively working on the update. This process is expected
to take until mid -2012. The first in a series of Public Meetings to receive citizen input is scheduled for
Tuesday December 13, 2011 beginning at 7:00 PM in the Conrad Park Recreation Building, 808 Michigan
Ave. Please help us to plan Waterville’s future by attending this meeting. And watch the website for future
meeting dates, as they are scheduled.
The 2000 Comprehensive Plan is available for review on the City website: www.waterville.org by clicking
“Zoning” under the Municipal Departments tab.
Winter 2011-2012
♦ Fill out a “request for security check”
form at the Waterville Police Department
or online at: www.waterville.org.
IF YOU’RE OUT FOR
THE EVENING
♦ Turn on lights and a radio or TV so it
looks like someone’s home.
♦ Be extra cautious about locking doors
and windows when you leave, even if
it’s just for a few minutes.
♦ Don’t display gifts where they can be
seen from outside.
♦ Stay alert and be aware
of what’s going on around you.
♦ Park in a well-lighted space, and be
sure to lock the car, close the windows
and hide shopping bags and
gifts in the trunk.
♦ Avoid carrying large amounts of cash;
pay with a check or credit card whenever
possible.
2
IF YOU’RE
SHOPPING
♦ Deter pickpockets and pursesnatchers.
Don’t overburden yourself
with packages. Be extra careful with
purses and wallets. Carry a purse
close to your body, not dangling by
the straps. Put a wallet in an inside
coat or front pants pocket.
♦ Shopping with kids? Teach them to go
to a store clerk or security guard if you
get separated.
Your kindness &
consideration will be
Appreciated!
If you have an elderly
or disabled neighbor,
please take a few
minutes to help them
clear their walks.
