History pr<strong>of</strong>essor John Heitmann<br />

continued to build his reputation<br />

as an expert on the history <strong>of</strong> automobiles and the auto<br />

industry as well as the influence <strong>of</strong> cars on American<br />

culture.<br />

National media including <strong>The</strong> New York Times, USA<br />

Today and the Chicago Tribune, and radio host G. Gordon<br />

Liddy, turned to Heitmann for commentary on a variety<br />

<strong>of</strong> automotive topics.<br />

Heitmann is also popular in academia, spending the 2011<br />

winter semester as a visiting pr<strong>of</strong>essor at University <strong>of</strong><br />

California-San Diego. While in California, he enhanced<br />

his pop culture credentials by taking a class to tour auto<br />

buff Jay Leno’s garage. He also is well known in the auto<br />

industry, speaking at the annual conference <strong>of</strong> the Society<br />

<strong>of</strong> Automotive Engineers.<br />

Heitmann talked to the Chicago Tribune in May about<br />

failed automotive designs.<br />

<strong>The</strong> New York Times “Wheels” reporter talked to him<br />

in April about <strong>The</strong> Collier Collection <strong>of</strong> automotive<br />

memorabilia in southern Florida.<br />

When Volkswagen unveiled its third-generation Beetle<br />

in April, USA Today asked Heitmann for his take on the<br />

history <strong>of</strong> the popular car.<br />

In a story for Investors Business Daily in November,<br />

Heitmann commented on the life <strong>of</strong> automotive innovator<br />

Walter Chrysler.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Christian Science Monitor tapped Heitmann for his<br />

knowledge on the automobile’s impact on American life<br />

for a November story on the America by Car photography<br />

exhibit in New York City.<br />

CTW Wire Service talked to Heitmann when Ford<br />

discontinued the storied Mercury line in December.<br />

On July 30, Heitmann was a guest for a 30-minute<br />

segment on G. Gordon Liddy’s radio show. He was part<br />

<strong>of</strong> a three-hour special on automobiles in American life.<br />
