Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
From the Lighthouse
A Northern Province Newsletter
The Benton Harbor Alumni Chapter, its Silhouettes
Auxiliary, and the Province Council Planning
Committee are working hard to make our
61 st Northern Province Council a memorable one.
The Council will take place on April 11-13, 2008,
and I encourage each member to register early
for this event.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all
of you who took part is raising revenue for this
year’s St. Jude Sunday of Hope Campaign. Although
we continue to receive donations, to
date, we have raised $15,898.
We extend a special thanks to the following chapters that, significantly, exceeded
their objective: Benton Harbor, Kalamazoo, Pontiac Saginaw and
Southfield.
Each member of the Northern Province is encouraged to donate $100 to the
Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation, this year. Also, you are asked to make a pledge
to the Centennial Capital Campaign at one of three (3) giving levels ($1400,
$2011, or $5000+). You have until September, 2010 to complete payment on
your pledge.
It is my hope that each and every chapter within the Northern Province
adopts the theme cascaded down by our 31 st Grand Polemarch, Dwayne M.
Murray, Esq. It is his wish that we pursue the ideology of ‘One Kappa’, while
‘Creating Inspiration: A Call to Service’.
Just what do these two themes mean to us as Kappa’s. The idea of ‘One
Kappa’ implies there should be no division of thoughts and actions among us
at any level of the organization. There should be commonality within chapters,
among chapters within Provinces and among Provinces within Kappa.
I know many of you have heard brothers extol their love for their undergraduate
chapter, while obviously not sharing that same love for our Fraternity. This
is divisive thinking that leads us away for the idea of ‘One Kappa’. Kappa must
be Kappa no matter where we sit as an individual member. It should always
look and feel the same.
‘Creating Inspiration: A Call to Service’ is basic to our very existence. We are
who we are because of the service we provide to others, both within our Fra-
February 2008 issued
ternity, as well as, the community at large.
And where does it all begin? It starts, and ends, within
the local chapter. Brothers must learn to function with
each other in spite of differences.
Even though we don’t always agree, we must learn to
not be disagreeable. When disagreements occur, and
they will, abandoning Kappa is not the answer as a solution.
We must support our leaders. As Brother Tavis Smiley
has said, ‘if you are a leader and you look around and
no one is following, you are just out for a walk.’ Two
things are important here; a good leader must first be a
good follower, and a leader is only as good as his followers.
We must support our leaders.
Remember, we are all on the same journey trying to
reach a common goal; the betterment of our Fraternity.
There is nothing more rewarding than the brotherhood
of Kappa.
So let’s roll up our sleeves and keep this train on it
tracks. For when it’s running smoothly, along its tracks,
it’s a beautiful thing.
I’ll see you in Benton Harbor!
Out with the “Old”, in with
the “New”!
By Ralph Kelly
Happy New Year my dear brothers! We are
officially out with the “old” in 2007 and in with
the “new” in 2008. As we look forward in the
year 2008, let’s take a step back and look at
what we did as men, husbands, fathers, and as
the men of Kappa Alpha Psi. Let us take inventory
of how we can improve ourselves in
all of these areas and more. Even though we
are only 52 days into this New Year, I am sure
that we’ve made our new year's resolutions
and dedicated ourselves to various tasks. Let's
MOIP – Changes Must Occur
By Harrison R. Duke III,
Undergraduate Advisor Northern Province
Within the past eight years, I
have served as undergraduate Chapter
Advisor for Alpha Beta, Wayne
State University, and two years as Undergraduate
Advisor for the Northern
Province. As the undergraduate advisors
for Alpha Beta Chapter, (Wayne
State University), the chapter earned
five Chapters of the Year Awards. I
have also taken an active role with the
Brother Harrison Duke, III
National Chapter Advisor Council
where I was instrumental in assisting
with the development of the new Chapter Advisors Manual and undergraduate
leadership training.
Working with other undergraduate chapter advisors in the Northern
Province has given me a unique insight into the frame of mind of
undergraduate and alumni members. I believe that much of the disorder
and concerns within the undergraduate ranks are a result of
our present MOIP process. The present policies and sanctions of the
Grand Chapter appear to have created an underground pledging
process that is dividing the fraternity. The new process appears to be
tearing at the heart of the fraternity’s principles of brother hood,
bonding and dissipation of the “Kappa Spirit”. I believe our present
Grand Polemarch Dwayne M. Murray Esq. has a vision on how to improve
on the present intake process. I think he understands that
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc has become stagnated, and the spirit
of the founders may be lost in the current process.
The Grand Chapter reacts to the problem of underground hazing,
legally, administratively, morally and practically. Yet the fraternity
has experienced more sanctions, suspensions, finds, and law suits
Page 2
keep in mind our beloved Kappa Alpha Psi,
and make a conscience effort to see where
we as brothers can not only make a difference
in the bond, but a difference in our
families, our communities, and the world
that surrounds us.
The year 2008 shows so many promises. I
feel as though we, the men of Kappa Alpha
Psi, have a great responsibility in making the
year what it ought to be. The question is,
are you up to the challenge in putting away
the “old you” and putting on the “new and
improved you?” Are you willing to change
in the areas that you have wanted to change
for some time now? Are you willing to be-
than our first 80 years of existence. Chapters received amnesty,
suspensions to chapters, from two to fifty years fines,
records purged, etc. Brother’s return and the problems continue
to escalate. There is something very wrong with this
policy. We must start at the source and repair the process that
creates this chaos. Young men want to feel they have earned
admittance into our fraternity. They want a challenge that
tests their male egos, intellect, and physical endurance and
honor the traditions of the fraternity. We must respect and
accept the input of the undergraduate brothers. Presently no
one is listening to the undergraduate, concerns, their prospective
of the MOIP, their vision for the fraternity. Lets get real
Brothers of the Northern Province. We must think out of the
box. If you have any suggestions that will move the fraternity
forward, ideas that will improve the current MOIP, share them
with me. I will pass them on to the Grand Polemarch and
Grand Chapter for study and review. I am the Chairperson for
the National Advisors Council, assigned to gather these suggestions.
Let us work together and make the Northern Province Leaders
in improving the current MOIP. .
Yours in the Bond,
In September of 2007 the local
chapter of the NAACP in Saginaw
honored – three members of the
community in its “Tribute to
Saginaw Heroes”. One of the honorees
was David M. Hall a former
retired brigadier general who rose
to this rank after 31 years in the
United States Air Force. David Hall
is a life member of Kappa Alpha Psi.
Brother Hall is a graduate of Howard
where he became a Kappa in
He has taught management and marketing as an associate
retired after 10 years as an executive--in resident at Saginaw Valley
State University, where he also taught leadership classes.
Brother Hall is a very active member of the Saginaw Alumni Chapter.
David has now added author to his many lists of accomplishments.
His first book is entitled “The ABC’s of Leadership”. The
The progress at the Kappa House continues. Since our last
meeting several things have occurred. The basement flooring
is about 95% complete and we now have an amazing landscape
in the front. Brother Charles Shepherd started the effort
on the front landscape by donating his time and some plants.
Brother Bobby Lawrence and his company JRL Landscaping
took the front landscaping to an entirely new level. His company
put in a sprinkler system in the front and back; landscape
the entire front of the house; put in a retaining wall and brick
pavers. His total donation in materials and time was around
$15,000. Please make sure you personally thank these Brothers
for their efforts when you see them.
When you see the progress we have made, we now need to
make sure we are being “good stewards” in taking care of and
maintaining what the Lord has blessed us with. We have to
Boy Scouts, Saginaw Community Foundation and its America’s
Promise initiative and Bethel A.M.E. Church where he is chairman
of the Trustee Board. Hall is contacting universities to accept
his 26 chapter “ABC's. book into their fold. Northwood University
already has and other schools are considering it. Hall
sees the book as most valuable for people coming into leadership
for the first time in their lives and young people who will
become our leaders. “This book was, if you will, a journal of love,
one based on personal experiences but applicable to everybody’s
life.”
Hall’s personal desire is the book will challenge people who read
it to say, “I can do that”. It has been said that one cannot become
a good leader without first being a follower, so follow
Dave’s lead and consider this as an invaluable addition to your
personal library and place your order by contracting David M.
Hall at Dmh2295@aol.com. The book also can be ordered
through Barnes and Noble and Waldenbooks. Book orders also
can be sent to Crimiel Publications LLC, P.O. Box 20061, Saginaw,
double our efforts to ensure that the Kappa House is well
maintained. We also need to work on driving more usage
of the Kappa House on Friday nights and other days to increase
our revenue potential. Brother King and his committee
will need your help more than ever to ensure the
Kappa House continues to look good and can serve our
patrons effectively. Please consider joining his committee
and providing a helping hand. However, regardless if you
are on his committee or not, we all must be “good stewards”
in ensuring that all beautification efforts at the Kappa
Sixty-First
Northern Province Council
By Bennie Bowers
The Benton Harbor Alumni Chapter, the Benton Harbor Silhouettes
and the Province Planning Committee are all actively engaged
in planning the 61 st Province Council to be held in Benton
Harbor, Michigan on April 11 – 13, 2008.
All meetings, meals (except the Board Dinner), and dances will
be held at Lake Michigan College, which is only a few miles from
the hotels. The Marriott Courtyard and the Holiday Inn Express
are the hotels we have reserved for the meeting. The Silhouettes
will be given preference for the Courtyard since that is
where their Board meeting and hospitality suite will be located.
Included in this newsletter are the registration forms for the
Province Council. We have managed to hold registration fees at
last year’s levels. We would greatly appreciate it if you would
submit your registration as early as possible to assist us with all
the counts we must provide.
If you have any questions, please contact Bennie Bowers
(benvejj@aol.com), the local chairman for the Province Council
or James Greene (jegreene@chartermi.net).
JOURNEY TO “ONE KAPPA”
By James Greene
As you are aware, the Grand Polemarch is striving to create “One
Kappa” with the national theme, Creating Inspiration: A Call to
Service by achieving a focus on service to others. In his words, “If
we join together in a spirit of achievement and brotherhood, all
of our promises will simply be short steps to the inevitable reality.
The enduring adherence to the tenets of Phi Nu Pi will be our
strength.” However, it is my belief that before we can achieve
“One Kappa” at the national level, we must achieve it at the local
and province levels first by making the Fraternity relevant to all
its members.
What can the Northern Province do to create “One Kappa” among
its chapters? Whether we will admit it or not, there is a divide not
only between the undergraduate and alumni chapters, but also
within chapters, between chapters in Western and Eastern Michigan,
New York and Ohio. The challenge to all of us is how do we
eliminate these divisions?
The National Strategic Planning Committee made a recommendation
to the Grand Board of Directors at its May 2005 meeting to
approve the following:
Northern Province Events
Detroit Alumni Chapter
Day of Hope
The Detroit Alumni Chapter Brothers visited Community A.M.E.
Church on January 20, 2007, where Brother Gilbert Morgan a Detroit
Alumni Brother is the minister. Polemarch Kevin Kyles and
Community Involvement Chairperson, James Jackson organized
the event.
Shared Values
Brotherhood, Integrity, Professionalism, Service, and Spirituality
Stages of Life Programs
The above were approved by the Grand Board of Directors at that
meeting, but to the best of my knowledge they were never implemented.
I believe that if the Northern Province began implementation
of the above programs we will be well on the way to
achieving “One kappa” within our Province and eliminating the
divisions within the Province mentioned above.
The Stages of Life Programs were established to make the Fraternity
relevant to all Brothers throughout the stages of their lives
with the understanding that needs change as one move from one
stage to another. The stages recommended were:
1. Undergraduate (ages 18 – 24)
2. Young Alumni (ages 24 – 39)
3. Mid-Life (ages 40 – 62), and
4. Senior Brothers (ages 62 and above)
I am suggesting that we come to the Province Council prepared
to discuss the above and see if we can come to a consensus regarding
how to proceed as a Province to accomplish the “One
Kappa” goal of the Grand Polemarch within the Northern Province.
The Brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi Detroit Alumni along
with the residents of Brush Park celebrated the life and
legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a celebratory
breakfast on Saturday, January 19, 2008 at Brush Park.
The MLK Breakfast at Brush Park was truly a spirit
filled celebration. The celebration began with an introductory
greeting by Brother Julius Maddox. Brother Maddox
led the discussion on the importance of what Dr, Martin
Luther King Jr. stood for. Brother Maddox also discussed
Dr. King's legacy and the importance in continuing that
legacy in combating injustices and maintaining equal
rights for all.
During the celebration the brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi
Detroit Alumni cooked and served fried chicken, smothered
chicken in gravy, scrambled eggs, potatoes mixed
with sausage and green peppers, grits, link sausage, biscuits,
and glazed apples with cranberries. Everyone in
attendance truly enjoyed themselves.
