MileGate – Highlights
IP-based Multi-Service Next-Generation Access Platform
MileGate is a modern IP-MSAN that can
support you in expanding your network so that
it is fi t for the future. With its extensive multiservice
characteristics, MileGate combines
carrier grade broadband access, telephony and
data interfaces in one single, compact Next-
Generation Access platform.
MileGate has been developed for the Next-
Generation Network (NGN), but it also supports
legacy technologies. This feature makes
MileGate an advanced IP-MSAN, enabling
seamless migration of services and providing
them via copper and optical fi bre for FTTx
applications.
MileGate supports TV and telephony services
via the Internet protocol (IPTV and VoIP) with
different standards and a variety of quality
control measures at data and at module level.
By using MileGate you can migrate whole or
parts of your telecommunications network to
the NGN. Expand your range of services to
include new, high quality Triple Play and
broadband business services, and continue to
provide the range of traditional telephony and
data services at the same time, without having
to rely on two systems.
Thanks to its robust design, MileGate is perfect
for usage in harsh ambient conditions. The
IP-MSAN can be used in street cabinets without
having to compromise on reliable operation.
By applying MileGate’s migration concept you
can minimise initial costs on the one hand,
because you do not have to convert the entire
network at once to Ethernet. On the other
hand you can generate additional revenue,
thanks to new services like IPTV.
Seamless Transition to the Next-Generation Network
MileGate supports you in gradual or total
conversion of your telecommunication network
from TDM-based data to IP.
MileGate achieves this fl exibility in the migration
process due to its unique hybrid backplane.
This enables MileGate to offer pure
TDM-services in addition to Ethernet services –
not just for the customer, but also for network
access. Integrated gateways enable the transfer
of the data. This level of fl exibility means you
can complete perfect transmission between the
different technologies. As a network operator,
you can determine the speed of the conversion
yourself.
For backbone uplink 1 or 10 Gigabit Ethernet
as well as traditional STM-4/1 interfaces can be
used.
Highlights
For voice services, with the V5.1/V5.2 interface
and VoIP media gateways (SIP/H.248) for POTS
and ISDN, you have all the standards required
for the transition of TDM-voice services to VoIP.
For data services, there are different TDM and
Ethernet interfaces to the subscriber and
network, as well as a CESoP gateway (Circuit
Emulation Services over Packet Networks).
The extensive support of NGN and traditional
services means you can migrate the telephony
and other data wholly or partly to IP-based
services. Therefore, MileGate allows you to
concentrate many different – and vital – transmission
systems in a single IP-based access
platform.
This versatility and the central management
system overarching all services help you achieving
maximum synergy effects in operation of
your telecommunication network.
MileGate – Migration
Telephony Migration
Your network is moving towards an All-IP
network. You are looking for a solution, so that
you can provide your customers with broadband
DSL access, but at the same time want to
continue to offer traditional telephony services.
MileGate can offer you seamless transition.
Today with MileGate, you can already prepare
your network for future migration. The hybrid
backplane allows MileGate to offer pure TDMservices,
like POTS and ISDN, in addition to
Ethernet services. Via MELCAS or the V5.1/V5.2
unit, you can transfer this data via E1 interfaces
as normal to your telephone network.
With a fi rmware update, you can convert the
V5.1/V5.2 unit to a media gateway for packetorientated
voice services at any time you
choose. SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) and
H.248/MEGACO (Media Gateway Control
Protocol) are available as protocols for the
media gateways.
After migrating, your customers can still use the
familiar, legacy telephony services. None of the
customer‘s equipment has to be exchanged. As
a network operator however, you can transfer
the telephony data, together with the Internet
data via a joint Ethernet uplink to your backbone
and dismantle the old telephone
network.
To get your customers to accept this conversion,
the quality of the telephone calls must be
comparable to the PSTN standard. To ensure
this, MileGate has different QoS technologies.
These guarantee consistent voice quality, even
when VoIP originates from the access point.
The fast implementation of POTS/ADSL2plus
broadband transmission can be realised with
MileGate’s COMBO solution with integrated
splitters.
In addition to voice migration, providing legacy
TDM data services combined with NGN services
is another challenge when converting to an
All-IP network.
Many of your customers have CPEs that have
no Ethernet interface, but continue to
exchange data via E1 or X/V interfaces (X.21,
V.35, V.36). To guarantee perfect transmission,
the access platform should be able to transfer
the data both by TDM uplink and via the
Ethernet to the backbone.
TDM
Thanks to its hybrid backplane, MileGate can
provide TDM and Ethernet data services at the
same time. With the IP-MSAN you can transfer
the traditional data via E1 interfaces – nothing
changes.
If on the other hand you want to transfer the
data via Ethernet, Ethernet packets have to be
created from the TDM data. For this case,
MileGate provides a CESoP unit to implement
this.
However, conversion and transmission in a
normal Ethernet data stream is not suffi cient,
but the previous TDM data has to be transmitted
constantly at high priority to guarantee the
units function perfectly.
To do so, MileGate provides different methods
to ensure high quality transmission and sophisticated
timing recovery via an Ethernet
backbone.
MileGate – Installation
Broadband and Multi-Service Offers everywhere
MileGate has been designed to offer maximum
availability and reliability anywhere.
Thanks to its robust mechanics, it can also
easily be used in feeder distribution interfaces,
or equipment rooms in buildings. Thanks to the
extra temperature range, it allows perfect
operation in carrier grade quality, even in
ambient conditions that are very diffi cult for
telecommunications equipment.
The main units support equipment protection
to provide maximum safeguards against failure.
Should a malfunction occur, the system
switches automatically to a back-up unit and
operations are continued.
With decentralised power supplies on the units,
any problems with the electricity supply are
minimised.
You can design the connection to the backbone
redundantly as a ring. As a result you can
protect locations from failure due to an interruption
in the transmission.
MileGate does not of course just mean
mechanical reliability, but also an extensive
range of software features to ensure data
transmission.
With for example Hair-pin forwarding, MAC
address spoofi ng and fl ooding, as well as
Black/White lists for MAC addresses, MileGate
is protected from attacks at layer 2 level.
To guarantee data safety, you can confi gure
transparent-LAN services and EPL (Ethernet
Private Line) services in MileGate. With these
two technologies, you can offer your customers
point-to-point Ethernet connections, e. g. to
connect headquarters with local sales points or
branches. Data transmitted in this way is on
what is known as a pseudo wire and cannot be
seen by other customers with Ethernet access.
The robust and compact design, combined
with extensive software safety functions, enable
you to offer a range of services with MileGate,
even when space is very limited. Both for
residential and business customer services,
MileGate gives you the interface you require
and the range of functions.
Network Management with UNEM/MCST
As a complete network management system,
UNEM is a key part of the MileGate solution.
UNEM can display the network topology, error
descriptions, alerts, inventory directories,
confi guration, performance monitoring and
security information.
You can personalise the intuitive UNEM GUI
(Graphical User Interface). For example, you
can model your network architecture on maps
that can be integrated into the GUI.
Standard Northbound interfaces (XML, CLI,
SNMP) are available for easy integration in OSS
(Operations Support Systems) and BSS (Business
Support Systems). MileGate can also be
integrated via a SNMP interface directly into an
alarm monitoring manager.
MileGate offers the standard safety features
such as authentication, secure management
channels and user groups.
MCST (MileGate Confi guration Software Tool)
is a local confi guration program (Local Craft
Terminal) for MileGate. Installed on a standard
PC, technicians can rely on all the relevant
information on the units locally and then
confi gure paths locally if required.
MCST offers you a command line interface and
a graphical user interface with all functions
required to confi gure and operate individual
network elements. The CLI supports scripting
for larger requirements and remote access is
possible via a Telnet session.
MCST has functions for:
■ Confi guring the services
■ Monitoring performance data
■ Retrieving inventory data
■ Managing fi rmware or network elements
With UNEM and MCST you have full control of
your telecommunications network. You have
powerful tools for central and local
administration.
MileGate – Applications
MileGate’s versatility makes a wide range of
applications in public and private telecommunications
networks possible.
Only some examples are described; please
contact us for the solution for your network.
Fibre Optics to any Access Point – FTTx
The ever-increasing demand for bandwidth
does not just require new transmission processes,
but also has an impact on your network
structure too. With ADSL technology, you can
achieve bandwidths of up to 6 Mpbs from the
exchanges.
For offering higher bandwidths with up to 100
Mbps nowadays FTTC applications with VDSL2
services are often used. These bandwidths via
copper can only be provided with VDSL2.
Because of the increase in subscriber numbers
in one cable, crosstalk (FEXT, Far End Crosstalk)
between the VDSL2 signals is the limiting factor
in terms of range and data rate. Vectoring in
MileGate can eliminate crosstalk to a large
extent.
Maximum bandwidth is achieved with the
connection of each subscriber via optical fi bre.
An Optical MSAN is the solution here, which
provides a dedicated optical fi bre for each
customer via Ethernet Point-to-Point.
MileGate supports all FTTx network architectures
perfectly and therefore gives you maximum
freedom in structuring your network.
Everything from one Access Node – Business Customer Services
A challenge for every network operator is to
react quickly and fl exibly to the demands made
by business customers.
Business customers usually need symmetrical
transmission rates and better data security. So
that your business customers are clear what
your services are and so that you can charge for
these, you will require exact statistics on the
quality of the services offered.
MileGate offers you a variety of ways of serving
this segment perfectly. GbE, Fast Ethernet
(optical and electrical), VDSL2 and SHDSL.bis
with Pair Bonding are available as interfaces.
By using EPL (Ethernet Private Line) you can
also implement point-to-point connections via
Furthermore, you can continue to give customers
traditional data interfaces, such as E1 or
services can be offered via what are known as
pseudo wires. You can make the change to
Ethernet data using an external or internal unit.
This data is then transferred to the backbone
together with the Ethernet data.
MileGate provides extensive data for quality
control purposes. This data can either be
Triple Play and more – All via one Subscriber Line
Triple Play, i.e. the service mix of voice, highspeed
Internet and TV via the Internet (IPTV),
will become more and more important for
network operators in the future. Today, many
once purely telecommunications suppliers
provide a wide portfolio of different entertainment
packages in addition to the pure
connection.
On the subscriber line and in the backbone,
these new services require very high bandwidth.
In future, due to the technical shift from
standard TV to high-defi nition HDTV, the
bandwidths required will once again multiply.
For this purpose, MileGate provides copper
and optical fi bre interfaces with bandwidths of
up to 1 Gpbs.
For broadband via copper the access lines have
to be shortened to achieve maximum coverage.
The access point must be moved from the
exchange closer to the subscriber in an outdoor
housing. MileGate can be used outdoors
thanks to its robust design. These characteristic
let you offer Triple Play services out of an street
cabinet in the bandwidth you require.
MileGate supports you in providing IPTV in a
two-stage multicasting concept. With multicasting,
data streams are only multiplied at points
where they can be called up by several users
– this saves bandwidth in the backbone. With
optical fi bre connections a CATV signal can be
transmitted as an option. So you can provide a
full TV offering without the need to build up an
own IPTV infrastructure immediately.
By pooling the different telecommunications
services, an extra benefi t is that the churn rate
of the customers decreases.
At the same time, MileGate offers you a variety
of interfaces. It provides ADSL from an
exchange, as well as VDSL2 with vectoring from
a street cabinet or from the Micro-DSLAM
easily and cost-effectively. Also the direct
