A 32, J. <strong>Köykkä</strong>, Sedimentology of the Mesoproterozoic Telemark basin-fills, South Norway: implications for sedimentation processes, depositional environments and tectonic evolution V The integration of several different methods, including regional mapping and lithostra- tigraphy, facies analysis, sequence stratigraphy, clastic petrofacies analysis, and geo- chemistry, is essential when studying Precambrian sedimentary successions. It is cru- cial to understand a sedimentary basin as a dynamic system to reveal ancient tectonic settings, depositional environments, and depositional processes for building a coherent tectonic-sedimentary model. VI Some Phanerozoic sedimentation models may oversimplify Precambrian sedimentary deposits, and uniformitarianism applied to individual sedimentary systems is not always valid. Thus, the ancient sedimentary environment should first be un- derstood as an individual system before considering it to more modern schemes. Although Precambrian bedrock is often deformed and metamorphosed, and out- crops are often limited, it is possible to perform a reliable sedimentological and basin analysis and to build valid paleotectonic reconstructions of ancient sedimentary basins. 72
