Barnes Lodge spruces up to
honor 25 years of hospitality
Barnes-Jewish Hospital continues to improve services,
technology and facilities for patients and families with
the recent renovation of Barnes Lodge.
Barnes Lodge, located near the hospital, offers a home
away from home for patients and their families who travel
to St. Louis for medical treatment. Barnes Lodge evolved
from the collaborative efforts of the Barnes-Jewish Hospital
Auxiliary and the department of social work. In 1985,
Barnes Lodge opened its doors in a temporary, five-bedroom
facility. In 1991, the current 20-bedroom facility opened.
Today, each bedroom can accommodate a family of five.
Chrissie Appleby, Barnes Lodge manager, says the lodge
saw an increased number of guests in 2011, with an average
of 35 people each night.
In recognition of Barnes Lodge’s 25 years of hospitality, the
Barnes-Jewish Hospital Auxiliary allocated funds to renovate
the lodge to ensure it continues to be a comfortable and
inviting space for guests. Most renovations were completed
by the end of 2011 with a few finishing touches in early 2012.
Renovations included new flooring and carpet, paint and
furniture to create a more updated, welcoming environment.
The lodge includes onsite laundry, shuttle service to and from
the hospital, a fully equipped kitchen, Internet access, cable
television and other amenities. In addition to bedrooms and
private bathrooms, the facility has comfortable common areas
where families can relax, watch TV or talk.
“Barnes Lodge is so important to have for families,” Appleby
says. “They have a lot going on with medical issues and the
anxiety that brings. We offer an inexpensive, convenient
option that feels more like home. Families can do laundry,
prepare meals in the kitchen and just relax in a tranquil,
warm environment. Our guests always say how grateful
they are to have Barnes Lodge.”

An integral part of hope and healing
The Arts + Healthcare program reaches thousands
of patients, their caregivers and family members, and
hospital staff. The program helps them find strength
and renewal in the midst of stress, and sometimes sorrow,
through enjoying or creating music, poetry or visual art.
The mission of Arts + Healthcare, supported by gifts to
The Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital, is to embed
the arts as an integral part of hope and healing.
At the 2011 Barnes Lodge holiday party, lodge guests and
employees gathered to share a holiday meal. Guests also
had the opportunity to participate in a mosaic project
that, once complete, will bring warmth and energy to
the Barnes Lodge kitchen.
