ATTRACTIONS
January 2013
Volume XXXIV, No. 5
In winter, your brain may say “Hibernate!” but your body needs to move in order to stay healthy. As a member of the JCC,
you’re one step ahead of everyone who’s scrambling to find the right place to fulfill their New Year’s resolutions. Mary
Frankson (above), a member since 1999, says she loves what she experiences each time she works out at the JCC. “Every
time I’m here the staff is friendly and greets me with a smile. I feel comfortable and truly appreciate that I can ask the
fitness staff questions whenever I need help or inspiration. The JCC has made changes over the years to stay current but
still offers what I enjoy most – a truly welcoming community center.” To rediscover all that our Health & Fitness and Aquatics
facilities have to offer, see pages 7-9.
Know someone looking for a great place to work out? Read about our January membership drive on page 2.

Every January I make a resolution to exercise
more often. Some years I stick to it and some
years… not so much. Every January I also make
a resolution to spend more time doing the things
I love to do and less time worrying about the
things I have no control over.
I will be honest. This second resolution is
even harder to accomplish than the first – and
that seems sort of crazy. Working out can be
rewarding (in some ways) but it’s tough and I’m
not the kind of person who puts exercise in the
“things I love to do” category. So why is it that I
can’t devote more energy to not stressing about
the petty stuff and spending more time doing the
things I love? It’s a real conundrum!
If I figure it out I promise to tell you, so you
can join me in the good times. Until then, we
can strive to simply enjoy what we have in the
present moment.
This year, let’s all try to put down the smart
phones, tablets and itouchpodletsnookels once
in a while.
Let’s disconnect from virtual reality and engage
in our actual reality more often.
Let’s devote a little less time to Facebook
updates and a little more time to face-to-face
updates.
Let’s resolve to commit to community.
The St. Paul JCC is a great place to make it
happen. Join a class, see a concert, volunteer to
make a difference in someone else’s life. While
you’re at it, resolve to smile more, talk to new
people and worry less about the little things that
are not perfect.
And yes… let’s also resolve to try to get a little
healthier too! Walk on the treadmill, swim in the
pool, hire one of our inspiring personal trainers
or join a group fitness class. I promise you’ll be
glad you did when next December rolls around!
Shalom,
DREIDEL DASH 2012: YOU WIN THIS
ROUND, WINTER, BUT WE’LL BE BACK
On Sunday, December 9, the 5th Annual Dreidel Dash 5K, 10K and Maccabee Mini Mile races were
cancelled when heavy snowfall made it impossible for the City of St. Paul to close the streets to traffic and
snow plows. Unfortunately, this made continuing on with the races too much of a risk to our participants.
We held the Post Dash Bash and our family concert featuring Saul Kaye at the JCC for those brave enough
to come out during a winter storm for games, music and food.
Dreidel Dash will be back next year – mark your calendars for December 8, 2013!
We’d like to thank the 300+ runners who registered for the races. Thank you to our event sponsors
MAKE THE JCC THE WORST
KEPT SECRET IN 2013
You know why the JCC is a great place to work out – friendly, knowledgeable staff, a welcoming atmosphere,
And they don’t just have to take your word for it. During the month of January, we’re offering new members
free, two-week trial memberships. When they join, we’ll waive the $100 enrollment fee and get them on the
path to fitness with our complimentary JCC Fit Plan.
There’s something in it for everyone: our Member-Get-A-Member promotion offers one free month of
membership to you for every new member you refer. So start telling our secret all over town!
WHAT’S NEW WITH YOU IN 2013?
Have you had a change of address (or moved to a seasonal address), phone number or
TU B’SHVAT
Tu B’Shvat, the New Year (Birthday) of the Trees,
will be celebrated across the Jewish world on
January 26, the fifteenth day of the Hebrew month
of Shvat. The holiday symbolizes nature, concern
for the environment and a time for thinking about
our relationship to the natural world. In Israel, the
earliest-blooming trees emerge from their winter
sleep and begin a new fruit-bearing cycle, so we mark
the day by eating fruit, particularly those that are
singled out in the Torah as being the bounty of the
Holy Land: grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives and
dates. The holiday is also observed by planting trees
or having a Tu B’shvat Seder (ordered meal) to reflect
on the changing seasons.
FAREWELL TO
TEEN DIRECTOR SAM EBERHART
Sam returned to the St. Paul JCC in October, 2009 (he worked at Camp
Butwin for three summers in the early 2000’s) to work as our Teen
Director while also pursuing a master’s degree in teaching at Hamline
University. This combination proved to be a perfect pairing: he gained more
experience working with young people while also receiving pedagogical
training through his coursework. “The JCC leadership was tremendously
supportive of my studies and intent to become a teacher,” Sam says. “After
three fulfilling years here at the JCC, I have finished my program and will
now be moving on to student teach.”
In his time at the JCC, Sam built programs to serve the needs of families
and their teens, including college prep classes, employment training,
leadership development, and community service; all while bringing youth
together to form positive relationships with their peers and community. Of
his job, Sam says, “I have been blessed by the relationships I formed with
teens and their families, as well as a diverse and immensely talented
staff. I’ve learned an immeasurable amount, and can only hope that I
have given back as much as I have been offered from such a unique and
supportive community. Thank you!”
We wish Sam good luck in all his future endeavors!
Acclaimed jazz bassist and composer Omer Avital has lent his highly-spirited
and soulful sound to the jazz, classical and world music scenes for well over
two decades. He returns to the JCC with an all-star group to perform “harddriving
jazz with a new soul for a new era.” Blending Israeli, Arabic, North
African, and classical European music, this concert puts a global twist on
the standard jazz idiom.
