Taking a break from the museum, I stopped by the Waco display to see how my biplane was getting along. Of all the airplanes in that museum, I still like my Waco the best! My timing was a bit off. As soon as I got outside the museum, it started to rain! I got to stand under the wing of the Waco for a couple of hours while the storm moved through. During all this, Carl took some time to install a new tail wheel and a mechanic from Euralair removed my HSI for inspection and (hopefully) repair. Bernard Chabbert introduced me to Catherine Maunoury, the 1988 Aerobatic champion. We arranged that she would fly me in her plane and I will give her a ride in mine, when we are together in Megeve, in the French Alps, (only 10 minutes by air from Mont Blanc) in mid-July. Now, that could be some interesting flying! 46
Day 14: Another Rainy Day in Paris Paris, France I'm wearing out with all this rain. It's been raining just about every day for the last week. Cold and wet is not my idea of a fun combination, and it's not doing my laryngitis any good either. It was a perfect day for finishing my tour of the Air and Space Museum. Today, I inspected the largest building, the one reserved for the earliest flying machines, up through WWI. This was most definitely the finest part of the museum. The only word I can think of to describe these early aircraft is exquisite. It is quite evident that early aviation pioneers took their inspiration from birds. The wings of some of these machines are so delicately shaped that you would think that they are, in fact, part bird. Some of these machines, however, are comical! It seems that almost every conceivable shape had been tried to figure out what it would take to fly. There were machines with two, three and four wings, some with circular wings, some with the empennage in front, some with two wheels, no wheels, four wheels, floats or skids. Some had gas engines, some had steam and some were part balloon. I particularly liked the one with a fuselage shaped like a boat, but it wasn't designed to be a seaplane. Down the sides of this craft were long rows of copper tubes that seemed to be designed to cool the water for the engine. It was one of the most unusual designs I've ever seen, and this model was perfectly constructed. I just had to take a photo of it: 47
