Foamfirst<br />

<strong>ITG</strong> were probably the first company to manufacture a truly durable,<br />

high performance foam-based production air filter.<br />

Why foam? Because, compared to paper or other filter technologies,<br />

reticul<strong>at</strong>ed polyurethane foam achieves optimum performance against three<br />

key criteria:<br />

1. Maximum <strong>Air</strong> Flow – the ability to allow air to pass<br />

through without causing a large drop in pressure.<br />

2. Cleaning Efficiency – the ability of the filter to remove<br />

dust and contaminents from the airflow.<br />

3. Dust Load-up Tolerance – the capability to absorb<br />

a large amount of dust before cleaning or replacement is<br />

required.<br />

With our unique TriFoam TM System, which uses various<br />

thicknesses of finer or coarser foams, these factors can be<br />

varied for different applic<strong>at</strong>ions.<br />

TriFoam TM gives us the flexibility to produce air filters to<br />

Superior Filtr<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

Results from tests performed <strong>at</strong> the Motor Industry<br />

Research Associ<strong>at</strong>ion (MIRA) show th<strong>at</strong> against leading<br />

paper element and cotton gauze filters, <strong>ITG</strong> foam filters<br />

outperform all competitors for low pressure drop (mbar)<br />

versus dust loading (grams). Typically, <strong>ITG</strong> air filters can<br />

hold 5 times the quantity of dust than an equivalent paper<br />

or cotton gauze air filter, giving better airflow over a much<br />

longer time. Our unique TriFoam TM system, with 3 layers of<br />

differing porosity foams, combined with dust retaining oil,<br />

give a high level of filtr<strong>at</strong>ion to protect the engine from<br />

wear due to dust inhal<strong>at</strong>ion. If you want to go faster for<br />

More Power for longer<br />

Ple<strong>at</strong>ed paper, synthetic polyester fibre and cotton gauze<br />

airfilters give good flow r<strong>at</strong>es from new <strong>at</strong> the expense of<br />

clogging up quickly, causing a gradual loss of power over<br />

Performance is unaffected by very large quantities of dirt<br />

arrested in the filter and, long after ordinary filters have<br />

blocked up and reduced the engine power, loss of pressure<br />

in the Profilter airflow will be exceptionally low.<br />

Longer life<br />

In normal road use, a Profilter will last <strong>at</strong> least 5 times as<br />

long as the equivalent standard filter. Waste is reduced so<br />

Profilter helps the environment as well as the engine.<br />

The famous red-band TM<br />

filters for road and race<br />

These vers<strong>at</strong>ile filters are easily recognisable by their twin bright red<br />

bands around the top and bottom. They should not be confused with the<br />

many inferior types of foam air filter.<br />

These bands are the visible part of two fibre-reinforced nylon injection<br />

mouldings which form the structure on which our unique TriFoam TM filter<br />

system is bonded.<br />

The two outer layers of foam provide optimum filtr<strong>at</strong>ion and<br />

load-up capacity while the inner layer is made of special<br />

self-extinguishing filter foam. Together, they give the best<br />

combin<strong>at</strong>ion for air flow, engine protection and safety.<br />

All standard basepl<strong>at</strong>es for the Megaflow range are made<br />

from bright red powder co<strong>at</strong>ed steel.<br />

Fitting advice<br />

Selection of the filter element depends on the amount of<br />

room available.<br />

<strong>ITG</strong> recommend fitting the tallest element possible, though<br />

a gap of 1/2” (13mm) average must be left over the top of<br />

the filter for air to circul<strong>at</strong>e.<br />

If using ram pipes, there must be an absolute minimum gap<br />

of 3/4” (19mm) or preferably 1 1/4” (32mm) between the end<br />

of the pipe and the underside<br />

of the top of the filter.<br />

Fitting instructions<br />

Fitting a filter is very straight forward. The basepl<strong>at</strong>es are<br />

supplied with bolt and spacer kits when required. The filters<br />

clip onto the basepl<strong>at</strong>es, and are secured by one or more<br />

simple 1/4 turn fasteners. In many cases an improved seal<br />

between carburettor and basepl<strong>at</strong>e can be achieved by<br />

applying a thin smear of silicon grease.<br />

The Megaflow range of air filters is normally supplied<br />

unoiled or 'dry', and they need to be oiled prior to use.<br />

For very light dusty conditions or track use, we recommend<br />

our JDR-1 oil. For very dusty conditions – rallying, grass<br />

track etc., we recommend our JDR-2 oil. Both products are<br />

available separ<strong>at</strong>ely or in a maintenance kit with filter<br />

cleaning fluid. Altern<strong>at</strong>ively, for a very small charge, we can<br />

pre-oil the filter for you <strong>at</strong> the factory when ordering.<br />

For particularly arduous conditions, oversocks are available<br />

for the twin red band versions of the Megaflow range.<br />

be oiled with JDR-2<br />

before use.<br />

Carburettor adjustment<br />

Whenever an <strong>ITG</strong> filter replaces an original equipment inlet<br />

system, the fuel metering systems on an engine may need<br />

adjustment to compens<strong>at</strong>e for the change in air flow<br />

capacity. The following is a guide, but the full engine range<br />

should be checked on a rolling road.<br />

For Weber, and similar types of carburettor, try the following:<br />

Single choke<br />

Increase main jet 5-10 points<br />

Reduce air corrector 10-15 points<br />

Dual choke<br />

Increase secondary main jet 5-10 points<br />

Reduce secondary air corrector 10-15 points<br />

Reduce primary air corrector 5-10 points<br />

Twin choke<br />

Increase main jets 5-10 points<br />

Reduce air correctors 10-15 points<br />

For SU and other types using a metering needle, it is<br />

necessary to reduce the diameter of the needle near the<br />

narrower end. There is a large selection of SU needles<br />

available and we can help with recommend<strong>at</strong>ions for trial.<br />

For Strombergs, Ford VV and GM Varajet carbs, inform<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

and needle variants are more limited.<br />

Fires, fuel ‘standoff’ and ‘blowback’<br />

The main causes of ‘standoff’ and ‘blowback’ are wild<br />

camshafts, poor cam timing and poor ignition timing, but<br />

poor fuel metering also has an effect. If a heavy ‘standoff’<br />

of fuel is occurring then some fuel will accumul<strong>at</strong>e on the<br />

air filter. If a ‘blowback’ occurs, this fuel and fuel in the<br />

carburettor can be ignited. Although the filter m<strong>at</strong>erials<br />

used are fire retardant, with the inner layer of foam selfextinguishing,<br />

a fire fed by fuel can seriously damage the<br />

filter and a severe under-bonnet fire may not be contained<br />

by the filter.<br />

The multi-layer foam filter m<strong>at</strong>erials are similar to those in the<br />

MEGAFLOW ranges and are therefore fire-retardant. The filter is<br />

r<strong>at</strong>ed for up to 260 or 350 bhp, so it has plenty of capacity<br />

in reserve.<br />

It can also be used with any of the DGAR, DGAS or DGR ranges<br />

of carburettors.<br />

The standard JC10 is now available with an increased overall<br />

height (JC10R) for gre<strong>at</strong>er dust holding capacity.<br />

These simple, light, but robust air filters come complete with<br />

basepl<strong>at</strong>e, brackets and clips for a quick-release <strong>at</strong>tachment to<br />

the Weber DGV or DGAV carburettors used in the F2 Stock Car<br />

formula.<br />

Maxogen induction systems are revolutionary kits th<strong>at</strong> enable cold, dense<br />

air to reach the fuel metering unit more efficiently.<br />

These remarkable units can deliver as much as 9% more effective peak<br />

power <strong>at</strong> the wheels, and in some cases <strong>at</strong> 500rpm less revs in doing so.<br />

<strong>ITG</strong> are able to supply fully enclosed air intake systems for<br />

some of todays more popular cars. This range is increasing<br />

<strong>ITG</strong> fully road test all prototypes to prove their durability<br />

How does the Maxogen<br />

airbox system work?<br />

Following years of experience designing induction systems<br />

for both rally and touring cars <strong>at</strong> world championship level,<br />

<strong>ITG</strong> are now making a range of purpose designed air boxes<br />

to form the core of a super efficient air induction system<br />

for any car.<br />

These optimised carbon fibre and aluminium housings use<br />

our renowned Maxogen range of air filters in varying sizes –<br />

so, depending on the space available when the standard air<br />

box has been removed, one of these air boxes will fit most<br />

modern road cars cre<strong>at</strong>ing a better air flow, and<br />

providing increased performance.<br />

Improve airflow Enhance performance<br />

The airbox housing fe<strong>at</strong>ures a radiused induction<br />

trumpet feeding from a large diameter primary inlet<br />

ducting arranged to collect cool external air. The trumpet<br />

design recovers air pressure from air velocity, filling a<br />

plenum volume around the large surface area of the<br />

MAXOGEN filter.<br />

The radiused outlet of the MAXOGEN filter (below) connects<br />

to a high quality secondary duct to feed clean, high<br />

pressure, cool air to the engine. The complete system is<br />

amazingly light, typically weighing only 800 grammes, and<br />

yet it can handle air for up to 300bhp with ease.<br />

<strong>Air</strong>Boxes<br />

The <strong>ITG</strong> range of p<strong>at</strong>ented RAB inline airboxes come in two<br />

sizes. The larger RAB65 can cope with upto 300 BHP with<br />

ease, and is comp<strong>at</strong>able with our range of 149mm diameter<br />

JC60FC maxogen filters. The cold air inlet diameter is<br />

101mm (4") and can be used in conjuction with our 4" cold<br />

air feed pipe (illustr<strong>at</strong>ed right). The RAB65 comes in two<br />

neck diameter comes standard <strong>at</strong> 70mm, which can be<br />

This airbox is ideal for tight packaging space and will<br />

perform far better than a cotton gauze or stainless mesh<br />

cone filter or short ram system. The air filter is removable<br />

for cleaning as with all our maxogen systems. The RAB54<br />

airbox is supplied anodized black, but can be supplied<br />

polished (as illustr<strong>at</strong>ed) or in a range of vibrant anodized<br />

The <strong>ITG</strong> range of AB65 airboxes are produced with 90 or 60<br />

degree outlets to suit different packaging requirements.<br />

The AB65 airboxes can cope with upto 300 BHP with ease<br />

and are comp<strong>at</strong>able with our range of 149mm diameter<br />

JC60 maxogen filters. All the AB65 and BAB65 airboxes are<br />

produced in ultra light carbon fibre with mounting holes in<br />

the base for <strong>at</strong>taching to suitable support bracketry. The<br />

BAB65 is a shallow version of the AB65C with a capacity of<br />

upto 250 BHP. The MAB1 is a small universal airbox capable<br />

of 150bhp with a 60mm cold air inlet and 70mm outlet.<br />

Although we can supply airboxes as stand alone items, we recommend they be<br />

bought as ready-to-install kits for optimum performance.<br />

AB80<br />

Universal carbon fibre airbox<br />

<strong>ITG</strong> are able to design and manufacture complete bespoke<br />

carbon fibre air induction systems based on our ‘universal’<br />

racing air box. Or, we can supply the air box and filter alone<br />

as the core of our efficient inlet system.<br />

Designed for production racing saloons, this unit can be<br />

used in any formula, handling power in excess of 500 bhp.<br />

JC70/71<br />

Racing filters<br />

This ultra high performance filter was originally designed for use<br />

on Cosworth DFV and deriv<strong>at</strong>ives in F3000, but it's excellent<br />

design has found many V8 and 4 cylinder applic<strong>at</strong>ions. It is<br />

lightweight and the three button fasteners retaining the filter to<br />

the aluminium base are accessible from above. The filter is<br />

entirely fire-safe, the internal foam being self-extinguishing.<br />

It should be noted however, th<strong>at</strong> these are pure race filters and<br />

we do not recommend them for normal road use.<br />

The JC71,a shorter version of the popular JC70 air filter, has<br />

been designed to give the same performance but for<br />

applic<strong>at</strong>ions where space is <strong>at</strong> a premium.<br />

F2 Stock Car filter<br />

This simple, light, but robust air filter comes complete with<br />

brackets and clips for a quick-release <strong>at</strong>tachment to the<br />

Weber DGV or DGAV carburettors originally used in Formula<br />

Fords, but now very popular with the F2 Stock Car formula.<br />

The multi-layer foam filter m<strong>at</strong>erials are similar to those in<br />

the MEGAFLOW ranges and are therefore fire-retardant.<br />

The filter is r<strong>at</strong>ed for up to 350bhp, so it has plenty of<br />

capacity in reserve.<br />

It can also be used with any of the DGAR, DGAS or DGR<br />

ranges of carburettors.<br />

Ultralight high performance air filters<br />

Our vast knowledge gained in the motorsport industry has allowed us<br />

to tackle the very precise requirements for motorcycle air filters.<br />

We have developed specialist lamin<strong>at</strong>e foams to allow correct bre<strong>at</strong>hing<br />

and appropri<strong>at</strong>e dust filtr<strong>at</strong>ion for these high revving engines.<br />

<strong>ITG</strong> have a comprehensive range of applic<strong>at</strong>ions and are constantly<br />

seeking new applic<strong>at</strong>ions to further develop the range and bring<br />

new products into the motorcycle marketplace.<br />

Bridging the gap between two and four wheels and<br />

developing filters th<strong>at</strong> work is not as simple as it sounds.<br />

Motorcycle filters tend to have much less surface area than<br />

cars – requiring a high flow filter with minimal pressure<br />

drop, a filter th<strong>at</strong> will retain the essential dust filtr<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

levels, keeping your engine from prem<strong>at</strong>ure wear and<br />

maintain performance.<br />

<strong>ITG</strong> have the experience to offer solutions for these factors<br />

and we work closely with motorcycle race teams to achieve<br />

the ultim<strong>at</strong>e performance from our air filters.<br />

This technical understanding and customer focus<br />

has allowed <strong>ITG</strong> to successfully gain contracts with leading<br />

motorcycle companies to supply manufacturer approved<br />

aftermarket race and performance filters.


In one example, we looked <strong>at</strong> an original ple<strong>at</strong>ed paper filter<br />

having a weight of 224 grams. The competitor’s equivalent<br />

cotton gauze filter weighed 345 grams. <strong>ITG</strong> were able to<br />

produce a filter with higher airflow and retain the dust<br />

filtr<strong>at</strong>ion requirements, but with a weight of only 84 grams.<br />

<strong>ITG</strong> do make the lightest performing air filters on the market!<br />

<strong>ITG</strong> are used to producing one off bespoke designs for<br />

motorcycles which have been converted from carburettor to<br />

fuel injection and often we can take one of our stock filter<br />

designs and modify it to suit the new arrangement. We also<br />

produce individual or dual trumpet socks to suit many of the<br />

old 2 stroke applic<strong>at</strong>ions like RD500’s and also many<br />

V twin applic<strong>at</strong>ions.<br />

The manufacturing and shaping of foam filters into obscure<br />

shapes is very easy compared to ple<strong>at</strong>ed cotton gauze or<br />

paper filters. This means th<strong>at</strong> we can produce a filter for<br />

any applic<strong>at</strong>ion where there is sufficient space – with no<br />

specialist tooling and rapid lead times, keeping costs to a<br />

minimum.<br />

Accessories<br />

Engine crankcase bre<strong>at</strong>hers<br />

Available in three sizes, these vent to air bre<strong>at</strong>hers are<br />

designed for use where a recircul<strong>at</strong>ing bre<strong>at</strong>her is not used<br />

or required. The bre<strong>at</strong>hers simply push over the end of the<br />

engine bre<strong>at</strong>her hose and are held in place with the quick<br />

connect clamp provided.<br />

Rampipe/trumpet filter socks<br />

These socks are designed to fit over rampipes and are<br />

available in two sizes for single socks, and one size for<br />

double socks to fit up to 45 DCOE or others carb with<br />

90mm port spacings.<br />

They are to be used where no other solution is available<br />

due to lack of fitting space. We can produce custom made<br />

socks, so if you have a particular requirement, please<br />

All foam air filters should be oiled to provide the best filtr<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

performance. The recommended oils are specifically formul<strong>at</strong>ed for<br />

foam air filters. When the oil is correctly applied, it provides a tacky<br />

co<strong>at</strong>ing over all the surfaces of the structure of the foam filter. As<br />

dust particles pass into the filter, they collide with the foam<br />

structure and are then retained in the oil co<strong>at</strong>ing. The oil co<strong>at</strong>ing<br />

also flows around the dust particles to continue to present a tacky<br />

surface for further dust particles.<br />

If foam air filters are used in a ‘dry’ or non-oiled st<strong>at</strong>e, they still<br />

provide filtr<strong>at</strong>ion of larger dust particles, and they will also retain<br />

most smaller dust particles due to an electrost<strong>at</strong>ic effect.<br />

Electrost<strong>at</strong>ic dust retention is much less reliable than oil retention,<br />

so if a filter is used without oil, it is very important to monitor<br />

whether any dust is passing through the filter, and to clean the filter<br />

frequently. Some dust, which can potentially damage the engine,<br />

may pass through a filter used in dry condition.<br />

<strong>ITG</strong> will not provide any warranty when a filter is used in dry<br />

condition, or has not been maintained according to instructions.<br />

There is a popular misconception th<strong>at</strong> oil from air filters can become<br />

detached from the filter, pass through the air, and contamin<strong>at</strong>e a<br />

MAF unit (mass air flow meter). Oils designed specifically for foam<br />

air filters are too viscous to become airborne and migr<strong>at</strong>e onto MAF<br />

units. All pre-oiled <strong>ITG</strong> Profilters have the correct amount of oil<br />

applied and will not cause any issues with MAF units.<br />

Under no circumstances use cotton gauze filter oil, engine<br />

oil or any other oil not specifically manufactured for foam<br />

air filters.<br />
