Instrumented indentation test
Principle: During the load application and relieving the load and the displacement
are meassured.
Acc. to DIN EN ISO 14577 the following values can be determined. Pyramidal indenter
( Vickers, Berkovich) are used.
Short cut Unit Determination
HM N/mm² Martens hardness
 Zero– point determination via
linear extrapolation
 High sensitivity for effects on
the surface of the sample and
the support
HMs N/mm² Martens hardness determined
by the slope of the force/ displacement–
curve
 Smaller sensitivity for effects
of the surface of the sample
HIT N/mm² Indentation resistance
EIT N/mm² Indentation modulus
dF/dh N/mm Contact stiffness
Interim value for the EIT– calculation
CIT % Indentation creep
Welast mNm Elastic part of the indentaion
work
Wplast mNm Plastical part of the indentation
work
Wtotal mNm Indentation work
